Bishankhu Narayan If you’re looking for an excuse to get off the beaten track, the shrine of Bishankhu Narayan does nicely. Surrounded by thick forest, around 10 km away from Sidhhipur, Lalitpur, lies the temple of Lord Bishankhu Narayan. This Narayan, one of the four at the cardinal points of the valley, lies within the caves and stays completely locked up. A chain-mail curtain protects the god’s image inside the cave and heads should be turned to a weird angle for a proper view. Only the priest can go inside. The chain-mail-covered sculpture is reached by a steep stairway that climbs to the temple and then drops into a narrow fissure in the rock, where pilgrims test their sin levels by trying to squeeze through the tiny gap. If you’re thin enough, you can descend through the narrow fissure, and according to popular belief, those who manage to squeeze through it will be absolved of past sins. If you get stuck however, the sin in question is either gluttony or pride. #BishankhuNarayan
