Rikki Wills, 25, was one of the five drum majors who led Champion's funeral march, escorting his casket during the funeral.

Champion, 26, was a member of the college's famed "Marching 100" band when he collapsed and died Nov. 19, 2011 on a bus parked outside an Orlando, Fla., hotel after a football game.

The death was ruled a homicide and Champion's torso was covered with bruises that were inflicted during a brutal hazing ritual that contributed to his death, according to investigators.

Wills was sentenced to one year of "community control"--a formal name for house arrest--and five years of state probation.

In May, Wills pleaded no contest to felony hazing resulting in death and his attorney said he has "owned up to what his part was."

"He acknowledges that he was on the bus and he basically did a pull-through basically trying to help Robert stay on his feet and continue to the back of the bus as fast as possible so he didn't get struck," Wills' attorney William Hancock told ABCNews.com today after the sentencing.

"He felt he was doing everything he could to protect him," Hancock said.

Over 2,000 pages of evidence from the investigation into Champion's death were released by the Florida District Attorney's Office in May 2012, which delivered a blow-by-blow of the events from the night of Champion's death.

Champion endured a lethal pummeling down the aisle of a pitch-black bus that rocked from the force of the violence inside, according to the documents.

Champion struggled, with a female band member holding him back to prolong the punishment, through a gauntlet of band mates who used their fists, feet, straps and sticks to pound him into unconsciousness.

"Rikki felt that he had done everything he possibly could to talk Robert out of doing this and was acutely surprised when Robert participated in the hazing," Hancock said.

He added that he believes FAMU is more to blame than the students who participated in the hazing ritual.

"I really think the blame falls greater on the institution that perpetuated the hazing than the participants, but he certainly owned up to his personal responsibility," Hancock said.

Champion's parents traveled to Orange County, Fla., for the hearing from their home in Georgia. The Champion family's attorney was not immediately available for comment.

Thirteen FAMU band members were charged in relation to Champion's death.

The first defendant sentenced in Champion's death was, 24, who got two years of probation and 200 hours of community service in October 2012.

"The judge had stated that your part in Robert's death was really minimal, but you and I know that's not true," Champion's mother Pamela Champion told Jones in court. "It will always be there haunting you. We both know that."

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who use birth control pills are less likely to develop ovarian cancer later in life, a new analysis of past studies suggests.

Researchers pooled data from 24 studies and found Pill users had a 27 percent lower risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. And longer use seemed to be tied to more protection.

"It reinforces that there is a positive relationship between the use of oral contraceptives and ovarian cancer prevention in the general public," said Dr. Laura Havrilesky, who led the study at the Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina.

"I think it adds some scientific weight to that relationship."

However, the review paper can't prove that using oral contraception lowers a woman's risk of disease - because there could have been other, unmeasured differences between women who took the Pill and those who didn't, researchers noted.

About one in 72 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.

The disease is often caught at an advanced stage, and the majority of women who are diagnosed will die from ovarian cancer. So researchers are eager to find ways to lower a woman's chance of developing it in the first place.

Eating a healthy diet and maintaining a normal weight may be one way to do that. Some studies have suggested that using birth control pills - which contain the hormones estrogen and progestin or progestin only - may also lower a woman's risk over the long run.

To clear up that picture, Havrilesky and her colleagues combined data from 24 studies that compared thousands of women who took the Pill for various lengths of time, at a range of ages, with those who didn't use oral contraception.

Any use of the Pill was linked to a lower risk of ovarian cancer, they found. Women who were on birth control pills for 10 years or longer were half as likely to develop the disease as those who didn't use them at all, the study team reported Wednesday in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

If the Pill itself was responsible for that reduced risk, the researchers calculated that 185 women would have to use it for five years to prevent one case of ovarian cancer.

But, because none of the studies randomly assigned women to take the Pill or not - each woman made the decision with her own doctor - it's not clear that the contraceptives, themselves, explain the whole cancer difference.

USE CAUTION

The researchers said there hasn't been enough time to study how the specific hormone formulations in contemporary birth control pills affect ovarian cancer risk decades down the line.

Because of that and other limitations, women should use "considerable caution" when figuring the new findings into their own personal decisions about the Pill, they wrote.

What's more, other research suggests women who take the Pill are at a higher risk of developing cervical cancer, said Eduardo Franco, head of cancer epidemiology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

"It is the sort of thing that requires a frank conversation between a woman and healthcare provider," Franco, who wasn't involved in the new research, told Reuters Health.

He said the findings are not surprising and that many doctors are convinced birth control pills do lower ovarian cancer risk.

"I don't think there's a question of the link," Franco said. What's important, he added, is "understanding the caveats that come with the reduced risk of ovarian cancer."

"What we've got right now may be the best evidence that we ever are able to have. I don't necessarily think that it is enough to tell a physician to have their patients use oral contraceptives solely for the purpose of preventing ovarian cancer," Havrilesky told Reuters Health.

"But I think it's enough to say this is a possible advantage in women who are considering use of oral contraceptives" for birth control or other medical reasons, she said.

At 89, Lautenberg was the oldest senatorandserving in that legislative body. He enlisted at 18 and served in the Army Signal Corps in Europe during the war.

Lautenberg served on the Senate committees on Appropriations; Commerce Science and Transportation; and Environment and Public Works. He had struggled with health problems earlier this year and already had announced that he would not run for re-election in 2014.

Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, has the power to appoint someone to fill the vacancy, according to The Bergen Record, which was . Christie is expected to schedule a special election to find a permanent successora decision that is sure to impact what was already considered a heated race to replace the late senator.

On the Democratic side, Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Bookerhe would bypass a run for governor against Christie to explore a run for Lautenberg's seat. Reps. Frank Pallone and Rush Holt have also been eying the race. While no Republicans have formally declared, several have been mentioned as possible candidatesincluding state Sens. Thomas Kean Jr., who ran for the seat in 2006, and Joseph Kyrillos, who unsuccessfully tried to unseat Sen. Robert Menendez in 2012.

While Christie's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Kean and Kyrillos are already being mentioned as possible GOP appointeesalong with Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. Christie could also appoint a Democrata move that would likely win raves in the heavily Democratic state as he vies for a second term as governor this November. But it would likely alienate Republicans and put at risk his rumored aspirations of running for president in 2016.

Speaking at a women's conference in Trenton on Monday morning, Christie who advocated passionately for the things he believed inand who sometimes "just fought because he liked to."

"Its no mystery that Sen. Lautenberg and I didnt always agree. In fact, it probably is more honest to say we very often didnt agree, and we had some pretty good fights between us over timebattles on philosophy and the role of government," Christie said. But never was Sen. Lautenberg to be underestimated as an advocate for the causes that he believed in and as an adversary in the political world."

Lautenberg'sincluded writing the law that banned smoking on airplanes, and he later helped craft legislation to ban smoking in all federal buildings. He also played a central role in raising the national drinking age to 21. He also wrote the law that prevents domestic abusers from owning firearms.

Lautenberg was a businessman and commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey before he successfully won New Jersey's U.S. Senate seat in 1982. He served until 2001, when he retired. But he agreed to run again in 2002, when then-Sen. Robert Torricelli, who was seeking re-election, dropped out of the race amid an ethics scandal.

Lautenberg's future in the Senate had been the subject of rumors for months because of his declining health, but that didn't diminish his fighting spirit. Lautenberg railed against Booker for declaring his intention to run for the Senate before he had decided whether to seek another termtelling a reporter that Bookerfor jumping into the race too early.

In a message posted on Twitter Monday, Booker praised Lautenberg as "a true champion" for New Jersey and a "tireless partner who always delivered for the people of Newark." "His legacy will endure for generations," Booker added.

Christie cleared his public schedule for Mondayleading to speculation that he's exploring his options for what to do about the special election. A major question is whether Booker, who has been considered a front-runner for the 2014 election, will be nominated by his party to be on the special election ballot this year, which could be scheduled for Nov. 5, Election Day.

But as the , New Jersey election law on this subject is somewhat murky and could allow Christie to delay the special election until November 2014. The latter could be more appealing to Christie because having a special election on the ballot this year would likely drive up Democratic turnout--which would help his Democratic opponent, Barbara Buono.

"Democrats are definitely going to push to have the election this year because it would drive up turnout for all of their candidates, including those in the state legislature," a New Jersey Democratic strategist, who declined to be named talking about strategy, told Yahoo News. "But this is Christie's deal. He is going to control this."

In the meantime, tributes for Lautenberg poured in from both sides of the political spectrum. In a statement, President Barack Obama praised Lautenberg as a "proud New Jerseyan who lived Americas promise as a citizen, and fought to keep that promise alive as a senator."

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican, praised Lautenberg as someone who served the nation "with courage and dignity" and as someone who "tirelessly championed the cause of veterans like him who have sacrificed so much for America."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he could "think of no better example of an American success story than Franks life."

"History will show that Frank is one of the most productive senators in the history of America," Reid said.

(Reuters) - A teen on the school bus boarded by a gunman who snatched an Alabama boy and then held him in an underground bunker until he was rescued six days later called 911 as the abduction unfolded, FBI tapes show.

Details of the hostage drama were unveiled in tapes and photographs released by the FBI late on Friday.

As gun-toting Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, burst onto a school bus in southeast Alabama on January 29 and demanded bus driver Charles Poland turn over children, a 15-year-old boy quickly dialed 911 from his cell phone.

"What's going on?" a 911 operator is heard asking the teen.

"He's asking for kids," the teenager replied, a demand the operator repeated incredulously in audio tapes of the incident. When Poland, 66, refused to comply, Dykes shot him dead.

The kidnapper then directed kindergartner Ethan Gilman out of his seat directly behind Poland, who had tried to shield the 5-year-old who suffers from bipolar disorder, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and Asperger's syndrome.

"The bus driver's dead," the teenager is heard telling the operator, adding, "He took a kid, he took a kid."

The teen stayed on the line with the 911 operator and provided a description of Dykes.

Throughout the call the dispatcher reassured the teen, telling him he was "very brave, you're doing good" and to "Hang in there ... you're doing so good."

Dykes fled with Ethan to a homemade bunker at his home near Midland City in southeast Alabama.

Pictures of the bunker released by the FBI showed a space measuring about 6 feet by 8 feet, which was 12 feet underground, equipped with electricity and a bunk bed made up with covers and pillows.

Dykes was shot and killed by law enforcement agents on February 4 during a raid on the bunker, which was later found to contain bombs.

In the audio tapes he lashed out at negotiators in an angry, profanity-laced anti-government rant, blasting the "corrupt system" and implying a deadline was looming before violence might end the episode.

FBI agents told ABC News in a report aired on Friday that Dykes had a chilling plan for the boy.

"Dykes relayed to the negotiators 'if anything happens to me, I have told Ethan to pull the trigger,'" or detonate one of the explosive devices later found in the bunker, the FBI's on-scene commander said.

Dykes, a retired trucker who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War era, was said to have anti-government views and had been due to appear in court to face a menacing charge involving one of his neighbors.

Though egg substitutes of various types have been around for decades, more scientific methods could finally produce new products that actually taste good, said Josh Tetrick here on Sunday (May 19) at this year's Maker Faire Bay Area, a two-day celebration of DIY science, technology and engineering.

Admittedly, he has a dog in the fight: Tetrick is the CEO of Hampton Creek Foods, a company based in San Francisco, Calif., that is developing plant-based egg substitutes. []

Industrial production

Every year, hens lay 1.8 trillion eggs around the world, and 99 percent of these hens live in cramped cages where they never see sunlight, stew in their own waste, and areto boost their production and keep them from becoming ill, Tetrick said.

"This system is crying out for just a little bit of innovation," he said.

The production of eggs and other , he said. For instance, livestock consume more food than it would take to feed the 1.3 billion people who go to bed hungry every night, and are responsible for 51 percent of greenhouse gas emissions due to flatulence and land needed to produce their food, he said.

For centuries, people have come up with egg and , with decidedly mixed results. But only 8 percent of plant species have been explored for food alternatives, so there could be many others that would work to replace eggs. Venture capitalists are optimistic as well: Many are betting on healthy food startups, including companies searching for meat and egg replacements, according to Tetrick.

Fake eggs?

To get better results, Tetrick's company is deconstructing the egg systematically.

For instance, eggs have some amazing properties, such as the ability to enable oil and water-based foods to mix permanently. (This emulsifying property is what makes mayonnaise stay creamy.) So the company is analyzing hundreds of different plant-based compounds to determine how well they emulsify.

To replace eggs in baked goods, the scientists are making hundreds of "microcakes" with candidate replacements in test tubes; they are also analyzing the protein content and molecular weight of many different compounds to make sure they can replace the nutritional benefits of eggs.

So far, the company has created a powdered egg product for baked goods. It was convincing enough thattried a muffin (not at Maker Faire) andcouldn't tell the difference.

Their next step may be more challenging: making a satisfying scrambled egg. On that front, they've found a plant from Asia that coagulates, or turns solid, with heat, the process that scrambles the eggs.
