LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Showtime's papal drama "The Borgias" will end its run at the end of its current third season, the network said Wednesday.

The series, which stars Jeremy Irons, Francois Arnaud, Holliday Grainger and others in the tale of Pope Alexander VI, who bribed, bullied and muscled his way into the papacy, will run its Season 3 finale - and, now, its series finale - on June 16 at 10 p.m.

Series creator Neil Jordan said that the series is ending for "a variety of reasons" but that the final episode, dubbed "The Prince," seemed "like the end of a journey" for the Borgia family.

"I never thought I would make a cable series and have enjoyed every minute of it," Jordan noted. "For a variety of reasons we won't be doing a fourth season, but, The Prince', when I wrote it and shot it, did seem like the end of a journey for the family. Whatever bonded them as a family dies in this episode, and the center of the drama for me was always the family. I want to thank Showtime and David Nevins for their unstinting support over the last three years, and look forward to working with them in the future."

Despite the cancelation, Showtime Networks president of entertainment David Nevins called "The Borgias" an example of "outstanding television that will live on."

"It has been an honor to work with the great Neil Jordan and the incomparable Jeremy Irons on 'The Borgias,'" Nevins said. "Neil has written nearly every episode of this series himself. His extraordinary storytelling combined with Jeremy's fascinating portrayal of the infamous Pope Alexander VI, has made for truly outstanding television that will live on. I look forward to future collaborations."

So far in his current season, "The Borgias" has averaged 2.4 million total viewers across platforms, basically what it averaged for its second season in the same time frame.

Early last year, as the show prepared to launch its second season, "Borgias" executive producer James Flynn said that the series would ideally run for four seasons.

"The overall plan in a series like this is ideally four seasons," he said Thursday. "That would be the plan, that would be the ambition."

SOWETO, South Africa (Reuters) - South Africans prayed for Nelson Mandela's recovery on Sunday as the 94-year-old former president spent a second day in hospital with a recurring lung infection.

Mandela, a global symbol of triumph over adversity and of reconciliation who became South Africa's first black leader in 1994 after the defeat of apartheid, was hospitalized early on Saturday when his already frail health worsened.

It is his fourth hospital stay since December and the government said on Saturday his condition was "serious". During previous hospital visits it had highlighted his "good spirits".

The government had yet to give an update by Sunday afternoon, stoking concern on social media and among the millions of South Africans who revere Mandela for his decades of struggle against white-minority rule and for steering the continent's biggest economy to all-race elections.

Presidency spokesman Mac Maharaj said he would issue a statement about Mandela's health if doctors gave him any information. Maharaj had said on Saturday Mandela was breathing on his own, calling that a "positive sign".

Hundreds gathered to pray for Mandela at Sunday Mass at the Regina Mundi Catholic church in the sprawling Johannesburg township of Soweto.

"We wish him speedy recovery, he must get well," Soweto resident Mlugisi Sekhosana said. "We know what he did for us in South Africa. All the nation, black and white, we wish him well."

The Sunday Times newspaper took a somber tone, with the headline "It's time to let him go", quoting a longtime friend of Mandela's, Andrew Mlangeni.

"The family must release him so that God may have his own way. They must release him spiritually and put their faith in the hands of God," the newspaper quoted Mlangeni as saying.

"Once the family releases him, the people of South Africa will follow."

HISTORY OF LUNG PROBLEMS

Mandela has a history of lung problems dating back to his time on the wind-swept Robben Island prison camp near Cape Town.

Before his 1990 release he spent nearly three decades in prison for conspiring to overthrow the apartheid government.

He stepped down as president in 1999 after one term in office and has been removed from politics for a decade. His last appearance in public was at the final of the soccer World Cup in Johannesburg in 2010.

He spent nearly three weeks in hospital in December with a lung infection and after surgery to remove gallstones.

A growing phalanx of international and local media assembled in front of the Mediclinic Heart Hospital in the capital Pretoria, where Mandela was believed to be staying.

Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, had accompanied him to the hospital on Saturday, the South African Press Association reported. She had cancelled a speaking engagement in London.

Social media platform Twitter was alight with comments from well-wishers in South Africa and across the world, with many commenting on the government's silence and Mandela's legacy.

"I hope God grants me years to tell my grandchildren about Nelson Mandela, the pride of Africa, the prisoner who freed his jailers," said one Twitter user.

Wine, beer and spirits manufacturers may soon have to disclose calorie content and other nutritional information on bottles and cans. But for now, such labeling remains optional.

The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, which is part of the Treasury Department, proposed a labeling rule in 2007 that would require alcoholic beverage manufacturers to include calories, carbohydrates, fat and protein content on their labels, but it has yet to make a decision on whether to implement the rule. It last week that manufacturers could add this information if they wanted to.

"What's interesting to me is that the reason why beverage companies want it and consumers want it is totally different," said Sara Bleich, a health policy professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "It's an example of two groups having different goals while having a sweet spot that seems to work for both."

Low-calorie beer manufacturers are hoping the labels will target people trying to lose weight, believing that's a way to boost sales, she said, adding that studies find that middle-income white women were most likely to pay attention to the labels.

And consumers want more information to make educated choices.

Even though many consumers don't understand food labels, the 15 percent or 20 percent of those who do can significantly lower their weight, Bleich said. This ultimately could lower obesity and have a positive impact on health care costs.

"I think more calories come from alcohol than people think," said dietitian Jessica Bennett, who works at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

On average, alcohol alone contains 7 calories per gram, which means it's almost as caloric as fat, Bennett said. Fat contains 9 calories per gram. Protein, on the other hand, contains 4 calories per gram.

Still, Bennett said she wasn't sure how new labels would affect alcohol consumption.

Consumers are at the mercy of their bartenders and waiters when they drink at restaurants and bars, because the bartender or waiter can give them a larger serving size, she said. Mixers, such as soda and juices can add calories, too.

"I definitely think it's going to be interesting to see how it goes," Bennett said.

The justice reported Friday that she's received more than $3 million in advance payments for her best-selling memoir, "My Beloved World."

Her annual financial disclosure forms show that Knopf Doubleday Group paid Sotomayor $1.925 million in 2012 in anticipation of her book. This comes in addition to the $1.2 million in advance payments she received from the publisher in 2010.

The book was first released in January and has been on the New York Times' nonfiction best-seller list, including four weeks in the No. 1 spot.

The 58-year-old justice, who was the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court and President Barack Obama's first high court nominee, has traveled the country this year promoting her memoir, but any royalties and speaker fees won't show up until future disclosure forms.

Her newfound wealth contrasted with her more austere lifestyle before joining the Supreme Court. In her first financial disclosure form, Sotomayor reported she was making payments on thousands of dollars in dental bills and credit cards bills with bank accounts worth no more than $65,000.

But in just the past year or so, following the publication of her book, Sotomayor has palled around with Hollywood stars like Oprah Winfrey, bought a new home in Washington's fashionable U Street district and received gifts of books, art, jewelry and "trinkets" from fans, more than two years after her confirmation in front of the Senate. She also reported having more than $1 million in a bank account and credit card debt of as much as $60,000 last year.

Sotomayor isn't the only justice to have book-related finances reported in their disclosure forms. Justice Antonin Scalia reported $63,991 in book royalties following the June 2012 publication of his "Reading Law: The Interpretation of Legal Texts," which was co-authored with Bryan A. Garner. Justice Stephen Breyer also reported that he made more than $30,000 in royalties in 2012 for his previous books.

Justice Clarence Thomas reported on his disclosure form that his wife, Virginia, worked for The Daily Caller and Liberty Consulting Inc., and got salaries from both. Thomas neglected to include his wife's employment, as required, on the report of his personal finances for 13 years, requiring him to submit corrected ones in 2011. The annual report asks only for the source, not the amount, of money earned by a spouse.

Breyer reported his wife, Joanna, got a salary for working at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where he serves as an honorary trustee, and Chief Justice John Roberts reported his wife, Jane, got a salary from legal recruiting firm Major, Lindsey & Africa.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, in addition to picking up the honor of being one of Glamour magazine's women of the year, also scored what the magazine called "the best goody bag of the year," filled with things that the justice estimated at about $2,500: a MZ Wallace tote, a Vince Camuto watch, oversize Marc Jacobs sunglasses, a silk Theodora & Callum wrap, an Autumn Cashmere sweater and other makeup and jewelry pieces, including an $80 statement necklace that Ginsburg wore to court at least once over her black robe.

And several justices reported salaries from teaching at colleges and universities. Roberts got $20,000 for teaching a Supreme Court history course at the New England School of Law in Malta last summer. Thomas received $10,000 for teaching at George Washington University. Scalia got more than $26,000 for teaching at St. John's University, St. Mary's University, Wesleyan University, the University of Southern California and John Marshall Law School.

Scalia also reported receiving a $1,000 shotgun from the National Wild Turkey Federation as a gift.

Justice Samuel Alito received an extension until August to file his disclosure form.

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Floyd Mayweather showed little sign of ring-rust after a year out of the sport as he used sublime defense and a steady parade of right hands to dominate fellow American Robert Guerrero and retain his WBC welterweight championship on Saturday.

One day short of 12 months since his last bout, Mayweather, who also spent two months in jail in 2012 for a domestic abuse offence, landed an astonishing 60 percent of his power punches en route to a unanimous 12-round decision.

All three judges scored the fight 117-111 in favour of the undefeated Mayweather, who admitted that a damaged hand had prevented him from ending the fight early.

"I really was looking for a knockout, but I hurt my right hand," he revealed. "After that, I just had to box smart.

"Robert Guerrero was a tough warrior. He was trying to press the attack. But I got really good work in the gym and I felt comfortable in the ring. My defense was on point."

After an opening two rounds in which the southpaw Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KOs) had some success, Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) seemed to slip into his comfort zone from the third.

Although the challenger's game plan seemed to be to back Mayweather to the ropes with his jab and then land punches to the body, the champion repeatedly slipped under his opponent's left, landed one or more right hands and moved out of danger.

After being hit with several rights in the third, Guerrero appeared more hesitant to commit to his attack, giving Mayweather yet more time to slip in and out of range and land his key punches.

"I thought Floyd did an excellent job tonight," said the 36-year-old's father and trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.

"There was nothing he couldn't do in there tonight. I told him to steal it with the right hand. That was a punch (Guerrero) couldn't see and wasn't expecting each time he threw it."

By the eighth round, Mayweather was stepping up his assault, landing right hands with greater force and mixing in left hooks as he opened up a cut over a clearly hurt Guerrero's left eye.

At that stage, it appeared that Mayweather would stop Guerrero inside the distance and although he continued to paint his opponent with right hands and left hooks, the champion remained content to focus on coasting toward the finish.

"Floyd was tricky with his punches," Guerrero said in a post-fight interview. "He's a great fighter. He's slick and he's quick. He's better than I thought. He was definitely on his game tonight."

Twenty years ago this week, one of the worst atrocities in Liberia's war a conflict that was marked by its sheer brutality and high civilian casualties occurred in Carter Camp when some 600 people were slaughtered on the night of June 5-6, 1993.

The neglect shown the victims mirrors the lack of action in bringing the perpetrators to justice. A United Nations-commissioned inquiry found the army of the late president Samuel Doe responsible, but other accounts have since challenged the report. No one was ever put on trial even though Liberia's post-conflict truth commission recommended prosecution for perpetrators of crimes in the war generally.

Nyenati Allison, who was then a reporter for The Associated Press, visited the area soon after the carnage and described a horrible scene: "Strewn through the camp were babies with crushed skulls, mothers hacked by machetes, elderly people butchered like livestock."

The victims were hastily buried. A profusion of bushes now renders the mass grave, dug between two aging trees on the outskirts of the old camp, all but inaccessible.

"The government needs to build a memorial here so that at least generations unborn will know what happened here," said Yelesah Mark, a 48-year-old survivor of that hellish night as he struggled to control his emotions.

Carter Camp existed originally as home for low-income rubber tappers of the Firestone tire company, situated 48 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of Monrovia near the world's largest rubber plantation which began operations in 1926. When fighting between rival rebel forces and regional peacekeepers displaced locals, they sought refuge in Carter Camp, swelling its population to over 3,000. By the time of the massacre, those in the camp of mud huts were a combination of company employees and people displaced by fighting.

The camp was immediately abandoned after the massacre and visitors have to be told there once was a camp here. Grass has taken over everywhere. Apart from a Nigerian-originated church which operates here, the few visible living things are birds building nests in trees that once provided shades for camp residents.

Mark was among the displaced people who nearly lost their lives in the Carter Camp Massacre, one of the worst atrocities in Liberia's 14-year civil war that ended in 2003. When gunmen dressed in military uniform entered the sprawling camp, said Mark, "we saw two tactical jeeps in which they came taking positions at the two ends of the camp, but we did not know their intent at first."

The slaughter soon began, with the attackers using firearms and machetes. Over 200 of those who were butchered were children.

"My brother-in-law Bainda and my friend Sackie were among the batch of displaced people slaughtered behind a poultry house down there," he said. "The killings were all over the camp; as people cried for help, all you could hear were 'ba-ba-ba, ba-ba-ba'" Mark said, imitating the sound of automatic weapons fire.

"Whenever I ... tell the story to people, it brings back that sad memory; it looks like we are digging out old wounds," he said. "But again, the story has to be told."

Mark said those who drove into the camp and carried out the massacre were former soldiers belonging to the army loyal to Doe. The then president was killed in 1990, but the army he led continued to remain active, fighting other rival forces.

Flan J. Nowon was a relief worker supervising food distribution in Carter Camp 20 years ago. He and his team worked there hours before the massacre, handing out food to "desperate people." They decided to take a break and return to their homes outside the camp, planning to return and resume the food distribution the next morning.

"It was just about two hours later that we started hearing heavy gunfire in the camp," Nowon said, standing with AP reporters near the overgrown mass grave. "I believed for sure there was something terrible happening in the camp when I saw a woman who had been shot in the buttock coming out of the camp naked, bleeding and crying and carrying a child."

"I ran back inside and told my wife 'Carter Camp is on fire,'" Nowon recalled.

The lack of accountability for massacres such as this one has bred suspicion that persists two decades later that some of those who orchestrated the violence are in positions of power.

Former Liberian President Charles Taylor, who was a leader of a rebel group in 1993 and whose fighters many people like Nowon suspect had a hand in the attack, was found guilty in April 2012 in an international war crimes court in the Netherlands of 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity and received a 50-year prison sentence.

But that was for aiding and abetting rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone, not for atrocities in his own country.

"Liberia became a place where killing was a way of life," said Nowon. "And those who killed people deliberately in Liberia have been left to roam the streets."

Construction spending rose 0.4 percent to an annual rate of $861 billion, a smaller gain than the 0.8 percent increase that was expected by analysts polled by Reuters, Commerce Department data showed on Monday.

The department revised March spending to show a 0.8 percent decline, which was a smaller drop than initially reported.

The data supports the view that government austerity is holding back economic growth this year. Public sector spending at construction sites fell 1.2 percent in April, hit by a sharp decline in state and local outlays, which hit a seven-year low.

Also holding back overall spending, private residential construction spending eased 0.1 percent lower. The drop appeared to be led by declines in home improvement spending, as outlays on building homes increased during the month.

Businesses, however, ramped up spending to build utilities, and overall private nonresidential construction spending rose 2.2 percent.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "After Earth" tells the story of an inexperienced boy trying desperately to please his father while making one mistake after another, and as such, it becomes an uncomfortable metaphor for itself.

Jaden Smith, who stars in the film, can at least take comfort in his predecessors - Anjelica Huston stumbled through her father John's mostly-forgotten "A Walk with Love and Death" before eventually becoming an Oscar-winning actress, and Sofia Coppola survived the global embarrassment of "The Godfather Part III" to become an acclaimed writer and director.

Granted, Will Smith isn't behind the camera here - that unhappy task has fallen to M. Night Shyamalan, who's still basically the trustee of Movie Jail after "Lady in the Water," "The Happening" and "The Last Airbender." Still, the elder Smith gets a "Story by" and executive producer credit, making "After Earth" the equivalent of a very expensive bar mitzvah, one where dad's a successful cantor and his son could have used another month in Hebrew school.

In a dystopic future, an international fighting force known as the Rangers organizes the mass exodus of a polluted, uninhabitable Earth. Humanity's new home is subjected to blind, deadly monsters known as the Ursa, and Ranger Cypher Raige (Will Smith) becomes a legend when his lack of fear makes him completely invisible to the Ursa, who track people by the scent of their fear.

Cypher's son Kitai (Jaden Smith, "The Karate Kid") wants desperately to follow in his father's footsteps, but the Rangers keep turning him down; Kitai is physically capable, but he hesitates in the field because of a childhood incident in which his older sister (Zo Isabella Kravitz) died saving him from an Ursa.

Father and son are traveling on an interplanetary mission when their ship crash-lands on Earth. With the rest of the crew dead, and Cypher suffering massive internal injuries, it's up to Kitai to travel 100 kilometers on his own to find the back end of the ship, which contains a functioning homing beacon - as well as an Ursa that has broken out of its cage. With Cypher's stern instructions (and disapproving scolds) ringing in his ears, Kitai will have to brave this savage planet to save them both.

The relatively inexperienced Jaden Smith is asked to carry a movie in which he spends almost all of it by himself, talking to a co-star who isn't there and reacting to special effects that will be added later, which is a task akin to casting a drama club freshman in a performance of Beckett's "Happy Days." On top of that, all the actors have been instructed to speak in a clunky futuristic patois that could be described as "Southern Kennedy," but it's the sort of thing that works better on paper. (Unless you really take it all the way, like the Russian-inspired slang of "A Clockwork Orange.")

Performances aside, "After Earth" is a fairly dreary affair, weighted down with grimness it never really earns and afflicted with sub-par special effects that keep us from being completely lost inside this world. (The animals of this post-historic Earth have apparently evolved into scarier creatures, despite the fact that humans have been gone for only 1,000 years, a blip in evolutionary time.) There are occasional stirring moments - particularly when Kitai eludes a giant bird of prey while gliding in one of those flying-squirrel suits - but it ultimately feels like a slog of a vanity project.

You know you're in trouble when you find yourself feeling sorry for one of the world's wealthiest teenagers. And you're definitely in trouble when you wish the mess of a movie he stars in could be as entertainingly rotten as "Battlefield Earth."
