An Army official apologized Friday for the unannounced training mission.

Dozens of alarmed residents called police to ask what was going on.

"No one had any warning about the helicopters, no one said anything afterward, and today city officials had to spend hours just trying to find out what had happened who had invaded Port Angeles," said Cherie Kidd, mayor of the Olympic Peninsula city about 60 miles west of Seattle.

The Army said the helicopters involved included both twin-engine Chinooks and Blackhawk attack helicopters.

The training exercise involved part of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, which is based at Fort Campbell, Ky., but has individual units in various locations, said Sgt. Jimmy Norris, an I Corps spokesman at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Wash. Part of the 160th is based at Lewis-McChord, he said.

"Our watch commander last night reported that we received 'dozens of calls' complaining about low-flying helicopters over the city," Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said.

After multiple calls to Puget Sound-area military bases, Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict was finally able to determine about mid-day Friday that the helicopters belonged to the Army, The Peninsula Daily News reported (http://is.gd/QaMw82d).

Army Col. H. Charles "Chuck" Hodges Jr., garrison commander at Lewis-McChord, told the newspaper that he had launched an investigation and was meeting with unit commanders at the base.

"I apologize, this is totally unacceptable," he said.

Hodges said the helicopters he mentioned four Chinooks were over Port Angeles from about 11:15 p.m. to shortly before midnight Thursday.

An Army spokesman for Hodges' office did not immediately return an Associated Press phone call Friday evening.

Kidd said she plans to meet Monday with Hodges at the base about 90 miles south of Port Angeles.

The helicopters were "training to work in urban environments," Norris told the AP, adding that the exercise involved landing at the small Port Angeles Coast Guard base. It's located across the city harbor from the downtown business area.

"I guess a lot of people got spooked because they had their lights on and the lights were bright, but I guess they had to have the lights on as part of the operation for landing at the airfield," he added.

Port Angeles resident Eric Phillips said he saw four helicopters traveling in two sets, with the leading set flying without lights. The aircraft circled the city for at least an hour, he told Daily News.

Army Maj. Michael Burns, interviewed by telephone from Fort Campbell, told the newspaper the exercise also included Blackhawk helicopters.

He said he couldn't discuss many details of the mission or say why the Port Angeles area was chosen, only that "the particular area just gave a different training environment for the pilots, something unfamiliar.

"We do our best to try to avoid populated areas, but (with) those aircraft being so large and so loud, even if we're not very low, it seems very loud," Burns said.

Specific law enforcement agencies in the area were not notified of Thursday's training mission, Burns confirmed, saying that's not typically done for operations as short as a one-night exercise.

Also, the aircraft used in such missions can cover such a wide area, "it's tough to notify every agency," he told the newspaper.

LONDON (Reuters) - The Church of England's law-making body voted on Monday in favor of ordaining women bishops, but it will be at least two years before the measure, opposed by a minority of traditionalists, can be passed.

The vote was a boost for Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby who became head of the 80 million-member Anglican church in January, a few weeks after a blocking minority defeated the last attempt to allow women bishops in the English church, after 10 years of divisive debate.

After several hours of talks in York at the Anglican body's national assembly, the General Synod, members voted overwhelmingly to pursue reforms to allow women bishops as a "matter of urgency".

A committee will draft legislation that will be reviewed later this year but it is not likely to be given final approval before November 2015.

" affirms an inclusive approach that is consistent with our previous resolution: the commitment to ordaining women bishops on exactly the same basis as men, and the flourishing together of all parts of the Church," said Welby, 57, who is seeking to modernize the image of the church.

Dozens of Synod members spoke to urge the Church to move forward from the "train crash" of November's shock result at the assembly - when a decision to ordain women bishops failed by six votes - and to return to a "path of reconciliation".

"This better-than-expected result has drawn a line under last year's disaster and lays the foundation for new legislation to permit women to be bishops," said Robert Key, chair of the House of Laity, one of the Synod's three chambers.

"It is only the start of a two-year process, but the Church of England is on the march again under new management."

GNAWING ANXIETY

The route to final approval might still be rocky despite apparent strong support.

"This time the Synod used a straightforward vote that just needed a simple majority. If it had been voted in this way in November it would have got through too," said Paul Handley, editor of the Church Times newspaper.

In November, the measure received 73 percent of the overall vote, but fell short of the required two-thirds approval in one chamber. The Synod could demand the same system of voting be used again.

Conservatives demonstrated significant opposition. "There will be a sense of gnawing anxiety on our part if we go down the route as it stands," said Rod Thomas, chairman of the evangelical group Reform.

The Church approved the ordination of women priests in 1992, but delayed making them bishops because of opposition within its previously all-male clergy. Bishops play a key role in many Christian churches where only they can ordain new clergy.

Women already serve as Anglican bishops in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, but Anglican churches in many developing countries oppose any female clergy and are working together to shield themselves against such reforms.

Rebecca Swinson, a reformer and member of church think-tank the Archbishop's Council, said the next generation would wonder what all the fuss was about.

"My big hope is that my children will know a different normality to me and that they will not hear the words 'women bishops' ever again," she told the Synod.

SEOUL (Reuters) - Asian chipmakers are set to cash in on a major realignment in the volatile industry which is tilting the power balance their way at the expense of gadget makers such as Apple Inc, after years of cautious investment kept supply in check.

Manufacturers including Toshiba Corp and SK Hynix are poised to reap the rewards of soaring demand for cut-price tablets and smartphones in China, the world's biggest smartphone market, and the emergence of Chinese mobile device makers such as Huawei Technologies Co Ltd.

At the high end of the spectrum, demand for gadgets armed with ever greater memory capacity will fuel chip sales even if the market for relatively expensive handsets does not see the kind of rapid growth it has in the past.

All of this, combined with reduced investment since 2011, means the prices of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and NAND memory chips have started to rise, and chipmakers are enjoying the most bargaining power they have had in years.

"Chipmakers are reaping the benefits of curtailed investment of recent years just when demand is exploding," said Hong Sung-ho, an analyst at I'M Investment & Securities.

Chipmakers had little bargaining power until early last year as Apple and Samsung were the sole major buyers of NAND chips used in mobile devices. The two global heavyweights, which focus on the high-end market, are now struggling with slowing growth as this most profitable segment nears saturation.

CHINA IN DRIVING SEAT

China is driving the industry's rapid shift to cheaper smartphones, helping chipmakers broaden their customer base from Apple and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

The growth of Chinese smartphone makers such as Huawei, ZTE Corp and Lenovo Group Ltd is threatening to weaken the dominance of Apple and Samsung, playing into the chipmakers' hands.

Some 70 percent of China's smartphone shipments are sold at 1,000 yuan ($160) or less, while 10 percent are in the 1,000-3,000 yuan range. Super-cheap tablets costing less than $100 are also soaking up supply.

"Despite weakening demand from Apple, NAND prices have... firmed up, largely thanks to strong demand growth from China," said HMC Investment & Securities analyst Greg Nho.

"The size of the Apple order was a big price-swing factor, but now demand from Chinese manufacturers is more than offsetting this volatility."

Prices of DRAM chips, mainly used in computers, have leapt nearly 90 percent so far this year even as PC sales have plummeted, while the market for NAND memory chips has tightened.

Outside of China, demand for NAND chips is increasing as consumers need more memory capacity to play high-quality video and music on up-market gadgets.

"In the old days, we only took a few photographs. Now we take videos as well, at potentially higher resolutions," said Damian Thong, director of research at Macquarie Capital Securities in Tokyo.

"I actually think the opportunity for NAND flash is enormous, still, and very untapped."

HTC Corp's flagship smartphone HTC One, for example, has NAND memory capacity of 64 gigabytes, four times bigger than that of most other high-end models.

"Nowadays, consumers want more feature-packed smartphones and we'll have to make sure we can produce these gadgets at affordable prices to compete in the market," said an executive from ZTE, who declined to be identified as he was not authorized to speak to the media.

EXPANSION AGAIN

No.2 NAND manufacturer Toshiba said on Tuesday it would expand a production facility in Japan with an investment of nearly 30 billion yen ($300 million). Samsung - the world's leading producer - is building a $7 billion NAND plant in China.

Micron Technology Inc, which is looking to complete the acquisition of bankrupt Japanese chipmaker Elpida Memory Inc before the end of August, plans to increase investment in 2014 as it integrates with the Japanese firm.

But even as some chipmakers boost investment for the first time in years, few believe the market is heading for a glut. Indeed, memory chipmakers' total capital spending this year is set to decrease by 2.6 percent to $12.3 billion, according to HMC Investment & Securities.

Most manufacturers are keeping investment to a small scale as they prepare for the arrival of three-dimensional chip engineering, a major technological leap from the current planar structure.

Macquarie's Damian Thong said demand for NAND chips would continue to outstrip supply, even with the new production facilities in the pipeline.

"Memory prices and memory profitability will remain high for the next 12 months," he said.

Samsung, which had been one of the most aggressive chip investors, has become conservative in recent years, a departure from its traditional approach of keeping rivals at bay by not allowing profitability to get too high.

"By creating an oversupply situation, Samsung was able to keep memory competitors weak," Bernstein analyst Mark Newman said in a report on Tuesday.

"Today, however, that strategy of lower memory chip prices actually just helps Samsung's handset and tablet competitors. Samsung is thus becoming highly motivated to generate memory shortages and high memory pricing."

Samsung is the world's top NAND chip maker with around 38 percent of the market, followed by Toshiba, which has a 28 percent share and SK Hynix with 13 percent.

Combined Chelios (1,651), Niedermayer (1,263) and Shanahan (1,524) played in almost 5,000 games packing their trophy cases with Stanley Cups and individual honours.

Canadians Niedermayer and Shanahan are also members of hockey's Triple Gold Club having won a Stanley Cup, Olympic gold and world championship titles.

There was no Olympic gold for Chelios but the 11-time All-Star did play in four Winter Games for the United States winning silver in 2002 and helped the Americans to a surprise gold at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

One of the NHL's most durable players, Chelios survived 26 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and Atlanta Thrashers, winning three Stanley Cups (1986, 2002, 2008) and three Norris trophies as the league's top defenseman before ending his career in 2010 at the age of 48 becoming the second oldest player behind "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe to play in the NHL.

"It's a great honour to be selected for the Hockey Hall of Fame," said Chelios in a statement. "To have such a long career in the game has been fantastic for me and being named to the Hall is a huge recognition for what I was able to accomplish."

From the moment he strapped on a pair of skates everything Niedermayer touched seemed to turn to gold.

Over 18 seasons with the New Jersey Devils and Anaheim Ducks Niedermayer won the Stanley Cup on four occasions (1995, 2000, 2003, 2007), captured the Norris Trophy in 2004 and a Conn Smythe in 2007 as the playoffs most valuable player.

Along with Olympic gold from 2002 and 2010 and a world championship crown in 2004, Niedermayer's collection of medals includes gold from the world junior championships (1991) and the World Cup of Hockey (2004).

Just one of 18 NHLers to score more than 600 goals, Shanahan sits 13th on the all-time list with 656 tallies winning three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings.

Shanahan was also a feared and menacing presence on the ice amassing 2,489 penalties during 21 seasons split between the Devils, Wings, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers and New York Rangers.

The hard-nosed power forward continues to play a leading role in the NHL was the league's chief disciplinarian and director of player safety.

"I had dreams as a little kid, as most kids do in Canada, that anytime you're shooting on an empty net in a driveway or a hallway you dream of scoring Stanley Cup winning goals," said Shanahan, who was also part of Canada's gold medal teams at the 2002 Olympics and 1994 world championships. "But I don't think any of us had the nerve to dream about stuff like this."

The 2013 class also includes Canada's Geraldine Heaney, a seven-time world champion and Olympic gold medallist who becomes the third woman voted into the hockey shrine while the late coach Fred Shero, who led the Philadelphia Flyers to back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 an 1975, will be inducted in the builders category.

The pro-choice movement has long argued that abortion restriction only leads to illegal, unsafe abortions. The Texas legislature may prove them right. But some illegal, unsafe abortions are already happening now.

She didn't live or work in Haiti or pretend to help. Fournier was here for fun, traveling to Haiti for the first time with her Port-au-Prince-born husband of almost two years. The couple visited a few of his relatives but otherwise has spent their 10-day vacation seeing the historic town of Jacmel in the south, wading in a nearby waterfall and relaxing on the beach.

"You can tell that the tourism isn't very developed yet, and that's the big charm of it," Fournier, 26, of Montreal, Canada, as she sipped juice from a cut-open coconut. "Everything is an adventure here."

Haitian President Michel Martelly and his administration are to trying to woo Fournier and others like her as they aim high to revive the country's long stagnant tourism industry with investments totaling more than $160 million.

While many in Haiti welcome anything that can create jobs, some critics are questioning the government's priority of trying to attract high-end tourists at a time when the country faces so many other problems, such as high unemployment, a deadly cholera outbreak and lack of housing for people displaced by the earthquake more than three years ago.

"It's good that the government is thinking about tourism but I think it's thinking about it in a very narrow way," said Robert Maguire, a longtime Haiti scholar at George Washington University. "It's an exclusive, high-end model that benefits a small group of the elite."

Haiti's tourism ministry had about $2 million in its budget under the previous administration, and received another $1 million from a Venezuelan oil fund in the aftermath of a destructive storm season, according to the former tourism minister. Today, the department has a budget that's $4.7 million, plus $27 million from Venezuela's PetroCaribe fund.

"Haiti is ready for tourism. Haiti is a tourism destination," said Tourism Minister Stephanie Villedrouin, a rare constant in the shakeup-prone Martelly administration. "If we want to be a sovereign country, if we don't want to depend on other countries, we need to figure out ourselves how to move forward and how to get revenue, and tourism must be number one on the list."

The government's projects include $13.2 million to build an airport and infrastructure on the southern island of Ile-a-Vache and another $8 million to develop the coastal town of Jacmel. Officials say these efforts will create more than 1,600 direct jobs and 6,500 indirect jobs. Tourism generated $200 million last year, Villedrouin said. This in a country whose annual budget is $1 billion.

Lest tourists fear Haiti unravels with unrest, the government is also building a force of 53 "tourism police officers" who will learn Spanish and English, first aid skills, customer service and work in the outposts where officials want to bring tourists. Funding comes from the Justice Ministry.

Other plans include making use of a little-known "investment code" that gives 15-year tax breaks to the owners of new hotels, many of whom are from the country's powerful and wealthy families. This law also allows hotel owners to ship supplies through customs without paying taxes.

Haiti used to be the stomping grounds for the rich and famous in the 1970s and early 1980s as they came in search of late-night Voodoo ceremonies, rum-fueled revelry and Cold War-era conspiracy theories. Guests included Mick Jagger, Truman Capote and Jackie Onassis.

But an AIDS scare in the early 1980s sent tourists to less exciting destinations. And the ouster of former dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" in 1986 spawned years of political upheaval as governments took turns toppling one another. The lone visitors became diplomats, peacekeepers, aid workers, missionaries and emigrants, all symbols of the country's problems.

They largely remain so today. The bona fide tourists who mostly visit are those who hop off the cruise ships docked in Labadie, a fenced-in beach attraction on the country's north coast; Villedrouin said 600,000 of these people visit each year.

Villedrouin couldn't say how many other real tourists came last year. But so far only 120 have showed up since January as part of holiday package with Air Transat, a leading charter carrier in Canada. Air Transat flies weekly between Montreal and Port-au-Prince, and reserves 30 seats a month for its holiday packages in Haiti, which cost between $1,399 and $1,600.

These tourists, however, are the exception, the country a tough sell not just because of its history of political unrest, dysfunction and disease or because it was designated by the U.S. State Department in 2012 as a "major drug trafficking country." It's also difficult to sell because its Caribbean neighbors are cheaper; hotels are relatively expensive and fees such as generator fuel and potable water are often included in room rates.

"You pay more but get more," Villedrouin said, citing Haiti's "added value" of culture.

The government is holding out that the tourism industry will create jobs as a construction boom for high-end hotels plays out in the capital and countryside. In fact, the government is making use of a little-known "investment code" that was revised in 2002. The law enables tourism investors to receive a 15-year tax break and import supplies without paying taxes. After the grace period ends, 15 percent of the company's income will be taxable at the end of the first year.

"Think about something: They create jobs. They create a lot of jobs," Villedrouin said, noting that each hotel room built creates two jobs and four indirect jobs. She adds that hotels charge a 10 percent tax on all purchases. Haiti's minimum wage has held at 200 Haitian gourdes a day, or about $4.54, since 2009. "These investments will definitely create jobs."

One bright Sunday morning, Fournier and her husband, Sadrack Duclair, relaxed in beach chairs under the straw-hut canopy. He photographed her as she laughed and played the role of Caribbean tourist, sipping juice from a cut-open coconut. Earlier, they had rented a car and found a driver to shuttle them among the tourist attractions.

"I knew coming here that it was going to be a big adventure," said Duclair, who left Haiti as a child and last visited in 1999. "I think it began at the airport, the first day. After that I was like: Haiti."

Bashar Assad's comments to the Al-Baath newspaper, the mouthpiece of his ruling Baath party, came a week after Egypt's military ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi as millions took to the streets to urge his removal. Morsi was Egypt's first freely elected president.

Assad is facing an insurgency at home and has refused to step down, calling the revolt an international conspiracy carried out by Islamic extremists and fundamentalist groups such as the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood a branch of the Egyptian group with the same name to which Morsi belongs.

"The Muslim Brotherhood and those who are like them take advantage of religion and use it as a mask," Assad said. "They consider that when you don't stand with them politically, then you are not standing with God."

Assad's comments mark the second time in a week that he has gloated publically about Morsi's fall. In an interview with another state-run daily last Thursday, he praised the massive protests by Egyptians against their Islamist leader and said Morsi's overthrow meant the end of "political Islam."

Last month Morsi enraged Syrian officials by announcing he was severing ties with Damascus and closing its embassy in the Syrian capital.

Assad's father, the late President Hafez Assad, cracked down on a Muslim Brotherhood-led rebellion in the northern city of Hama in 1982. The Syrian forces, led by the then-president's brother and special forces from their minority Alawite sect, razed much of the city in a three-week air and ground attack, killing between 10,000 and 20,000 people.

"Arab identity is back in the right track," Assad said in the interview with Al-Baath. "It is returning after the fall of the Muslim Brotherhood and after these political trends that use religions for their narrow interests have been revealed."

Earlier this week, Egypt restricted the ability of Syrians to enter the country, with officials citing reports that a large number of Syrians were backing the Muslim Brotherhood in the bloody standoff with the military over Morsi's ouster.

Also on Thursday, the Syrian government started buying up local currency and raising penalties for black-market deals to try to stop the fall of the pound, which has tumbled to record lows against the U.S. dollar, the state-run news agency SANA said.

Syria's move Wednesday came as the currency hit a record low, reaching 310 pounds to the dollar compared with 47 pounds to the dollar when the country's crisis began 28 months ago.

The record drop of the pound happened on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when observant Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. Many Syrians are struggling with soaring prices because of the tumbling currency.

SANA said the government approved a bill Wednesday that criminalizes business deals in currencies other than the pound, with penalties ranging from three to 10 years in prison.

The bill also seeks to prevent manipulation of prices in the market and "curb exploitation of citizens' needs," SANA said.

SANA also quoted Central Bank Gov. Adib Mayyaleh as saying that the monetary regulator sold $50 million to foreign exchange companies Wednesday at the rate of 247.5 pounds to the dollar. The official rate still stands at 104 pounds to the dollar, though it is widely ignored even by the state, and on Thursday it was trading at 260 to the dollar.

The currency began a sharp descent last month after the U.S. decision to arm Syrian rebels. A recent report by the International Crisis Group suggested that although the Syrian pound faces increasing pressure, it "has not entirely collapsed."

"Authorities still distribute salaries to public servants and fund the military-security apparatus," the report said.

Syria is believed to have relied heavily on Iran to support its economy. Private media in the region have reported Iran supplied Assad's regime with billions of dollars since the crisis began in March 2011, and Syria's SANA recently acknowledged $1 billion in aid.

The Syrian civil war has killed more than 93,000 people, according to the United Nations, and displaced millions more. The northern city of Aleppo, once Syria's commercial center, has witnessed deadly fighting, shelling and air raids since July last year.

When the conflict began, the government had some $17 billion in foreign currency reserves. But that figure has dropped from blows to two main pillars of the economy: oil exports, which used to bring in up to $8 million per day, and tourism, which accounted for $8 billion in 2010. The U.S. and the European Union bans on oil imports are estimated to cost Syria about $400 million a month.

Syrian officials haven't said how much cash is left in the nation's reserves.

Lampedusa, a treeless, strip of an island nine kilometers (four miles) long, is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland and is the main port of entry into Europe for African migrants smuggled by boat from Libya or Tunisia.

As his plane was landing, a boat carrying 162 Eritreans arrived in port. Officials said they were in good condition, just cold.

Dozens of Lampedusan fishing boats accompanied Francis' coast guard ship as it pulled into port, a seaborne motorcade to honor the first pope to visit an island that often complains it has been forgotten by Europe as it deals with the thousands of would-be immigrants who come ashore each year.

"Pope Francis, only you can save us," read a banner on one of the boats. "You're one of us," said a spray-painted sign hanging from an apartment building overlooking the port.

Francis, whose grandparents immigrated to Argentina from Italy, has a special place in his heart for refugees: As archbishop of Buenos Aires, he denounced the exploitation of migrants as "slavery" and said those who did nothing to help them were complicit by their silence.

He has also said he wants his to be a missionary church that goes to the "peripheries" to minister to the most marginal.

Francis greeted a few dozen migrants one by one as he arrived in port, stopping to chat with a few before heading to celebrate Mass on the island's main sports field.

LONDON (Reuters) - Roger Federer received orders from Wimbledon organizers on Wednesday to change his orange-soled shoes that breach an all-white rule although women players will not be pulled up for wearing colored knickers.

Wimbledon, the world's oldest tennis tournament, has the strictest dress code in tennis, stating for the past 40 years that players must wear "predominantly" white.

The rules stipulate no solid mass of color, no fluorescent colors, little or no dark and bold colors, and preferably all white shirts, shorts and skirts.

The tournament's clothing police allow no exceptions, even for top players like Federer, the seven-times champion ranked the world's eighth most powerful celebrity by Forbes magazine this week.

"He has been asked to change his shoes," said a Wimbledon spokesman ahead of the Swiss player's match on Wednesday against Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky on Center Court.

He said several other players had also been asked to change their shoes to abide by the rules but no other warnings had been issued for other violations of the dress code.

The sight of colored knickers emerging as women rivals Maria Sharapova from Russia and American Serena Williams serve failed to make organizers see red and the colored nails sported by a list of women players on court have not been ruled out.

Knickers have caused a stir at Wimbledon in the past, dating back to 1949 when American Gussie Moran was accused of "putting sin and vulgarity into tennis" by wearing lace-trimmed knickers at the All England Club in south London.

KNICKERS, LOGOS AND STYLE

Six years ago Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin shocked organizers by wearing a pair of crimson underpants beneath her white outfit which had officials reaching for the rule book but to no avail.

"The rules state that players can wear any color underwear they like provided it is no longer than their shorts or skirt. Anything else must be white," said a Wimbledon spokesman.

The all-white dress code is one of the traditions at Wimbledon, which dates back to 1877 when women wore ground-length dresses on the court, and officials are keen to uphold standards.

In 1985 the U.S. player Anne White was called to one side after arriving on court in an all-in-one, head-to-toe lycra bodysuit to play against Pam Shriver. She was asked to wear something more conventional and obliged but lost her match.

However this year second seed Victoria Azarenka and Czech player Eva Birnerova played in white leggings on the first day of the two-week championships although it was unclear if this was a fashion choice or to stay warm in chilly temperatures.

Second seed Azarenka had to pull out of the tournament through injury on Wednesday.

Logos are forbidden on any of Wimbledon's 19 courts with Czech American player Martina Navratilova in 2004 famously taking scissors to her hat to cut out an offending logo.

However British champion Andy Murray, who beat Benjamin Becker in his first round, was not hauled up for sporting the name of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity on his sleeve.

The world No. 2 is hoping to win the tournament for his former doubles partner, Ross Hutchins, who is being treated for Hodgkin's Lymphoma at The Royal Marsden hospital and was in the royal box on opening day on Monday to watch Murray in action.

Despite the dress code limiting fashion flair on the court, some players try to add their own style with mixed success.

Sharapova, the world No. 3 who designs clothing for Nike, is closely watched by fashion followers and in 2008 turned up in a tuxedo-style top and shorts, much to her opponent's chagrin.

"It's very pleasant to beat Maria. Why? Well, I don't like her outfit. That was one of my motivations," said her compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva after beating Sharapova.

Clinton received a standing ovation the Lincoln Center ceremony before she presented the CFDA's highest honor, its Founder's Award, to Oscar de la Renta, whom she called "a dear friend." She recounted first meeting him as first lady in 1993 during a White House receiving line for a Kennedy Center event.

De la Renta came up to her and said, "that's one of my dresses," Clinton recalled. She added, "He looked me up and down." That had the audience giggling.

The designer joined her on stage and said, "She might not like me to say this, but I think she's going to be our next president."

That launched into enthusiastic applause.

There was a running joke between Clinton and the show's host, Andy Cohen, about the former secretary of state pitching a pilot to Bravo called "Project Pantsuit."

Cohen also riffed on the popular online parodies called "Texts from Hillary." One showed Vera Wang asking Clinton, "How do I change up my look?" Her response: "Same thing I told 'Chelle: bangs," referring to Michelle Obama's hairdo that caused much buzz earlier this year during President Barack Obama's inauguration.

A bit of a more serious political undertone came during CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg's speech as she pledged to pursue more manufacturing in the U.S.

The other honoree to get the country's top designers and their celebrity and model friends on their feet was Wang, who received the CFDA lifetime achievement award from her former boss Ralph Lauren.

"To all the women and men I have dressed, thank you for your trust," she said.

The annual award show draws a mix of Seventh Avenue and Hollywood: Jessica Chastain presented the international award to Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy; a Thakoon-clad Rose Byrne handed Lim his trophy; "Downton Abbey's" Dan Steven's called out Browne's name; and Kerry Washington gave the prize to Proenza's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. (Washington pulled off a diplomatic move, wearing a yellow, square-neck gown by Jason Wu, who wasn't nominated this year in the womenswear category, since she didn't know which designer name would be inside her envelope.)

Hailee Steinfeld, wearing a two-piece, crystal-covered Suno ensemble, and Douglas Booth, stars of the upcoming film "Romeo & Juliet," announced the winners of the Swarovski emerging talent awards, including Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis of Suno, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School, and Pamela Love.

It has become a tradition for many designers to bring as their dates actresses and models who wear their clothes like the paparazzi pros they are. This year, Calvin Klein's Francisco Costa brought Rooney Mara, who wore a black, laser-cut dress; Michael Kors came with Karolina Kurkova, who wore a sparkly silver shorts set; and Alexander Wang walked in with Erin Wasson, who wore a geometric white gown with sheer panels.

Sofia Vergara attended with jeweler Lorraine Schwartz. Vergara had on a chunky emerald and diamond necklace that complemented her green Herve L. Leroux gown.

Linda Evangelista, however, made her own grand entrance. She chose a black strapless gown by de la Renta.
