FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Typically, retailers who sell both fuel as well as grocery items in a convenience or grocery store tend to manage the pricing of each separately. In this silo-like approach, the retailer often tries to increase gross profit through higher pricing on both sides. But this tactic often results in lower volumes, less revenue and reduced market share, according to Bob Stein, president of KSS Inc., the fuels pricing experts. In a recently published commentary on this topic, 鈥淏reaking Silos: How to Drive Store Traffic Through Competitive Fuel & Product Pricing Strategies,鈥?Stein asserts that by looking at the two silos together, the retailer can find opportunities to buy volume cheaply on one side, and use those extra customers to maintain volume and increase margins on the other side.

鈥淭he first step in this process of tearing down silos is to develop a mentality that analyzes the total site. This not only applies to just the fuel and store, but to other major business units on-site, such as car washes and fast food offerings,鈥?said Stein. 鈥淭oo many retailers incorporate separate processes and management teams to determine fuel versus in-store strategies and pricing. These processes must be revised so that management looks at the total site in order to analyze and determine the correct strategies for the entire store.鈥?

Stein suggests the following steps:

The goal, says Stein, is to focus the store鈥檚 fuel pricing strategies and inside promotion strategies on the maximum combined Gucci Replica fuel and store gross profit, rather than fuel profit alone. One option may be to lower fuel prices to grow fuel customer traffic, counting on the competitive fuel pricing to generate more in-store profit than will be lost through discounting fuel. Stein notes. 鈥淐onvenience store operators are usually already giving away a significant amount of in-store gross profit margin through regular promotional pricing of the main convenience store categories 鈥? cigarettes, milk, beer, soft drinks, etc. So evaluating the fuel price and in-store pricing strategies in tandem will ensure that the result will be beneficial. The goal is to use the extra store customers delivered by the fuel-price discounting to maintain store volume with lower levels of in-store promotional pricing.鈥?

It could get a lot worse. With neither of them now able to work up a decisive majority of primary and caucus delegates before the convention in Denver, with the outcome almost certain to be decided by how the 794 super-delegates - party grandees who shape their own mandate on the night - split, the mud-slinging could continue right through this summer. First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness' trip included a meeting with outgoing President George Bush and talks with the New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, who has authority over major investment funds.

Nearly two weeks of round-the-clock negotiations ended in success late last night when Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) members of the Stormont Assembly agreed to back the deal brokered with Sinn Fein.

The settlement will see the devolution of policing and justice powers from Westminster to the Assembly within weeks, satisfying a key republican goal, while new arrangements for overseeing loyal order parades will meet the demands of unionists. With Sinn Fein accusing the DUP of stalling on the transfer of policing powers for the last three years, it was feared that failure to find agreement could see the collapse of the power-sharing government led by the two parties.

The final piece in the political jigsaw that sealed agreement came at Stormont's Parliament Building last night as the clock in its Great Hall approached midnight.
