１）有効な（習得理論）教授法に基づいて教えているプログラムで勉強する。
２）実際にターゲット言語を聴き、話す機会を増やす。

１）については、じゃあどうやってそのプログラムや教室が、有効な教授法を使っているのか分かるのかという質問が出てくるかもしれませんね。これに関しては、実際に教えている先生や学生の話を直接きくしかないかも知れません。２）については、当たり前の事なんですが、日本の英語教育ではこれが決定的に足りなかった。だから、日本人に英語が話せるわけがないのです。話すためには話すための、聴くためにな聴くための練習が必要なのです。今日はこのあたりで！

Hello everyone! Today I would like to write about my personal story on studying languages, namely English and Chinese. When I was a sophomore at university, I watched a Chinese film. and I really got interested in Chinese language and culture. Then, I thought I have to study Chinese but at that time my second foreign language was German. Therefore I could not take Chinese classes formally at university. However, I made friends with a Chinese student and studied Chinese on my own for a couple of months. After I graduated from my university in Japan, I got an opportunity to study in the US. Firstly, they gave me training in teaching Japanese and then I went to Texas both as a teacher and a graduate student. When I was a graduate student, I was so busy that I did not have time to study Chinese. After graduation, I got a teaching position at a university in the US. When I arrived at this school, I asked my colleagues to let me study in their classes as an auditor. SInce then I keep studying Chinese and it has been more than one and a half years. That means I started studying Chinese at the age of 24. I have studied Chinese only for one and a half years but surprisingly I can hear, speak, read and write quite well. In American foreign language programs, they focus on developing students linguistic performance/proficiency rather than on linguistic knowledge. If I had studied Chinese in Japan, I would not have been able to speak this well. From my experiences of studying and teaching languages, I would like to summarize some important points that should be noted.

1) Study in a program that employs a sound methodology (based on linguistic theories).
2) Make opportunities to practice listening and speaking in the target language.

As for 1), you might wonder how you can you know that the program that you want to study in uses a sound methodology? Well, you may have to ask the teachers and students who are teaching and studying there directly. As for 2), it is obvious that this is important but in Japanese English education this is what has been missing for several decades. Therefore it is very natural that Japanese people cannot speak English. It is because we did not have enough practice in listening and speaking. Well, that's it for today. Thank you for reading!
