SAN FRANCISCO -- With a little more than two weeks to go before their wedding, Emily Dreyfuss' fiance ordered a tie and pocket square from Gap chain Banana Republic's website to go with his Navy blue suit.

What the couple got in the mail instead on Thursday would make an identify thief giddy: the confidential files of about 20 former employees, including numbers and W4 tax forms.

"We totally laughed," Dreyfuss, 29, said on Friday from her home in Cambridge,专业加工制作玛瑙手镯, Mass.

She had misgivings about the package as soon as it arrived. It was really heavy and didn't say Banana Republic,纯天然玛瑙手镯, but Gap Inc ().

She and her fiancee have been buying each other presents, and she thought it may have been a really heavy piece of clothing with catalogs, said Dreyfuss, the daughter of actor Richard Dreyfuss.

When he opened the package, inside were three folders sealed with tape and labeled "HR Administration." They contained tax and Social Security information as well as handwritten resignation letters, doctors' notes and salary information -- seemingly the employees' entire record at the company. The employees were sales support associates and at least one made $9 an hour, Dreyfuss said.

The resignation letters were mostly from March and addressed formally to "Ms." and then the person's first name. They were polite and positive, expressing thanks for the chance to work for the company and learning so much. Some ended by saying, "God Bless."

Dreyfuss, who runs the home page and also writes for technology website, CNET, said she didn't look through everything.

"I got a queasy feeling and felt like I should stop looking at this," she said.

Edie Kissko, a spokeswoman for San Francisco-based Gap Inc., said Friday the company would release a statement.

Dreyfuss said a Banana Republic representative has since responded to a tweet about the mix-up and apologized for what he called a "horrible mistake."

He said clothing and confidential information is sent out in the same gray bag, and the employee information appears to have been mislabeled. The representative said the store would look into what went wrong and inform the former employees, Dreyfuss said. Ironically, Dreyfuss said her fiancee recently received someone else's welcome packet from his new employer, with that employee's salary and Social Security number.

Dreyfuss said the episode with Banana Republic raises concerns about how well the company is safeguarding customer information if even its employees' information can be compromised.

"People should know about this because it's crazy and scary," she said.

She was offered a free tie and pocket handkerchief -- a $61 value, but said she declined.

The auto industry doesn't mind that at all. After years of recessionary slumber, consumers are now comfortable enough to make big-ticket purchases. Last Friday, after Bank of America's () , retired postal worker Victoria Lee took her adult daughters to her local USPS Credit Union. "[My daughters opened] free checking accounts with no charges for the use of debit cards," Lee said. Like many Americans who are carefully watching every dollar, the Florida resident said she was grateful to have .

Meanwhile, a record-breaking 3,200 new checking accounts were opened over the weekend at the , the world's largest credit union with 3.7 million members and nearly $48 billion in assets. The weekend surge -- which crushed the previous high of 2,500 -- fits into a larger trend for the credit union, which serves the Department of Defense and active duty military. It has had annual growth between 6.3% and 6.7% since 2007, and is on track to record a 14% uptick in membership this year, said Tisa Head, the senior vice president of savings products. In addition to its fee-free debit cards and accounts, another driver for the year's projected double-digit membership increase has been the credit union's willingness to post pay early for active duty members who use the Active Duty Checking account.

"You can't help but draw some lines to current economic growth," said Nancy DeDona, vice president of membership.

Amidst the financial chaos on Wall Street in the last few years, and with the biggest names in retail consumer banking getting monthly, if not weekly, black eyes, credit unions have been steadily gaining ground. Since 2007, the credit union membership in the United States has increased from 86.8 million to more than 91 million, according to figures from . Total assets have increased from $755 billion to more $942.5 billion at more than 7,290 credit union organizations.

Patricia Briotta, a spokeswoman for , attributes the recent growth to people's rising desire to find alternatives to dealing with Wall Street.

"[The growth] mirrors the time when people were looking and giving [credit unions] greater value. This is a Main Street option," she said. The organization launched an in 2008, which allows consumers to search for local organizations.

Technology Reduces the Stigma of Smallness

The 55-year-old NAFT Federal Credit Union, an acronym for Neighbors and Families Together, in Pharr, Texas, is another of the thousands of credit unions dotting the American financial landscape. It has grown steadily to a membership of nearly 9,000 members and assets of $57 million. That's small by industry standards, but NAFT does what these nonprofit financial institutions do best: It caters the needs of its local community, providing a high level of personalized customer service. Five locations, two of which are at local high schools to promote financial literacy, serve the hard-working community.

"We are not trying to grow assets but we are trying to take in new members," said credit union president Suzy Brinkman-Doughty.To do that, her credit union is focusing on attracting younger clients. "We have to meet needs of younger people. They want to do online banking and have convenience and immediacy." As a result, the Texas credit union has a basic online banking platform; there is no mobile app or fancy advertising campaign. But the credit union gets the job done, without a fee.

Credit unions are nonprofit, member-owned institutions and were created at the national level under the 1934 . Originally, most credit unions were associated with labor or worship affiliations, but today, many are open to all. They don't do commercial lending, but generally offer no- or low-fee checking accounts, low-minimum balances to open account and lower interest rates for small loans and credit cards,专业加工/制作/批发/零售玛瑙手镯/手环，专业手镯批发, capped by law at 18% for federal credit unions.

The historical drawbacks to credit unions include fewer locations,纯天然手镯, smaller ATM networks, and eligibility requirements. No less an Internet luminary than , often referred to as one of the fathers of the Internet, said so this week at the 40th meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the non-profit industry group that administers domain names -- .com, .org, .xxx.

Vint's statement has picked up some resonance in the hallways here. That's not surprising since,专业加工制作玛瑙手镯, depending on whose statistics you believe, doesn't want to use the Internet out of fear: Some criminal could use it to hijack their passwords, steal their retirement, expose their children to pornography and violence.

At a more basic level, many people are confused by the images, emails and websites that pass by them, and can easily be lured into thinking they are engaged in, say, online banking, when in fact they are surrendering their most valuable personal data to a criminal syndicate.That's a real threat, and an enormous social cost that ranges into the billions of dollars per year. And one of the ways criminals make it happen is by abusing the domain name system -- put simply, all the "addresses" of all the websites out there.

Let's take a , filed here in California last month against , which is a registrar -- a company you can buy a domain name from. Above.com is part of a larger company in Australia called . It's also accredited by the , which from here on will be referred to as "the corporation," though it's often called by its acronym, ICANN ("eye-can").

Despite being accredited by the corporation, though, the lawsuit alleges Above.com is a "serial cybersquatter." The , but basically it means someone picks a well-known trademark like Verizon and then goes about buying Internet addresses that resemble the trademark. A variation on this is "typosquatting," when someone buys an Internet address that resembles the trademark when it is mis-typed.

Verizon's lawsuit alleges that one of Trellian's executives -- -- was involved in registering a variety of domain names, including myhomeverizon.net, downloadverizon.com, homeverison.net and dozens of other addresses that more subtly played off various Verizon trademarks. He probably should not have used his company credit card for payment -- apparently to one of his own companies -- with Trellian's corporate address on it, though.

Now, someone can quite easily and legally create a "parked" page at one of those domains, put pay-per-click advertisements on it, and make money anytime some hapless Internet user winds up on the page and becomes confused when it isn't Verizon. When the user clicks on another link on the page to get away, most likely that will register a "click" that translates into a small amount of money paid by the advertiser to the owner of the parked page. That's why the Internet is cluttered with garbage parked pages. In an isolated sense, this is not illegal.

But when bogus domains multiply, and smart criminals like the ones that keep hammering to hide themselves, the game is afoot.

Verizon's lawsuit doesn't allege criminal activity like that, but this kind of behavior on the part of a registrar like Above.com demonstrates that all a criminal might need is a registrar willing to look the other way. While taking money, of course.

The story gets even better. The lawsuit alleges Above.com also operates a privacy service, which means for an extra fee, the owner of a website address can make his or her identity untraceable by you and me. When you're talking about a company that's across a border somewhere in the world, like Australia, that can make the cops' job very difficult. Verizon's lawsuit says About's privacy service has been named in 68 trademark disputes, and lost all of them.

And parent company Trellian owns and operates a "monetization" service, which means it makes money off the pay-per-click arrangements as well.

On the other side of this argument are some human rights and privacy advocates, who say anonymity on the Internet must be defended. And for some uses, of course it should be, otherwise it would be difficult to engage in, for instance, citizen protests against oppressive governments, as we've seen in the Middle East.

Consumers are directly affected as well, since they can learn important information from protest sites that also might infringe on a trademark. (In Verizon's case, it bought and now owns the domain "," so if you wanted to set up a website with that name and address to complain about the company's service,玛瑙手镯批发, you would have to buy it from the company, and it just ain't gonna sell it to you.)

But when you've got registrars that game the system, and enter false information into the records to cover their tracks, that's a big problem.

That a registrar such as Above.com can behave as Verizon's lawsuit alleges and still be "accredited" by the non-profit corporation that's supposed to protect the public interest, means you've got a broken system. Consumers rely on accreditations all the time for all sorts of things. But ICANN's accreditations appear, in frequent circumstances, to be meaningless.

We have to rethink the social costs of anonymity on the Internet. It's used for many things besides freedom of expression. Personally, I don't really care about the rights of corporations to protect their trademarks so much -- they've got money for that sort of thing. But you should care about your right not to be scammed every time you open a bogus email pretending to be your bank sending you a request for more information.

If , . Above.com is not alone in this kind of alleged behavior. The executives who profit from the domain name system dominate the ICANN scene. Isn't it about time we start taking back the Internet?

The prior closing high was 14,164.53 from October 2007. The intraday highest price was 14,198.10 at the time. Now on Tuesday you know what the deadlines will say in every print edition on Wednesday.

DJIA HITS NEW ALL-TIME HIGH!

The DJIA is up more than 75 points after the market open and is at 14,纯天然玛瑙手镯,219 this morning. Our readers should not be surprised at all by the new high. We have been calling for unofficial upside to our 14,590 target we set as the peak DJIA price for 2013.

We have not yet issued a DJIA 15,000 alert nor have we formally lifted our price target to that level. The key word is "yet," but we are in no real hurry right now. Today's gains are being tied to better news out of China, but we would remain somewhat subdued in getting too excited there until the promises actually happen.

Investors are well aware that the past two years have been kind to the markets. All of the major U.S. indexes are pushing through new highs, corporate earnings have rebounded sharply from their Great Recession lows,专业加工/制作/批发/零售玛瑙手镯/手环，专业加工制作手镯, and many of the go-to economic measures (unemployment, durable goods,专业加工制作手镯, GDP) have shown consistent signs of improvement.

But much of this has been due to "" from the -- a policy that will likely soon reverse. That means you'd be wise to prepare for a change in how you invest.

A Lesson in Greek

Fund managers often cite two factors when evaluating their stock market performance: alpha and beta. Simply put, an investor achieves alpha when their stock pick performs well due to improvements in that specific business or some internal catalyst -- better earnings, management actions, activist intervention and the like.

The complement to alpha is beta, or stock performance dictated by movement of the overall market. For example,专业玛瑙手镯零售, if the Dow Jones industrial average () rises 3 percent in a month and your personal stock portfolio rises around that level, without any major company-specific developments, then that performance is due to beta.

The two aren't always mutually exclusive -- a healthy economy helps a well-run business increase its earnings -- but lately, investors have enjoyed more profits from beta than alpha.

In the coming months and years, that pattern may change quickly.

Be Prepared to Adapt

Last week, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said , the bond-buying program it has employed since the Great Recession. What that means for many companies is a slowing of all of the cheap money that has helped fuel growth in the face of a tepid economy and a nervous consumer base.

In the program's most recent iteration, the Fed has been buying $85 billion in bonds every single month. Whether one agrees with the Fed's quantitative easing policy, it's hard to argue with the market performance. The S&P 500 () is up more than 140 percent since its March 2009 low. Since the beginning of this year, the Dow is up more than 14 percent.

What if the quantitative easing program ends? How can you structure your portfolio to earn alpha instead of beta?

Choose your stocks more carefully

We have been playing the most fun game in the market: Everyone's a winner. But what happens when the game skews toward rewarding skill? The diligent and cautious prevail. As Warren Buffett famously says, "Only when the tide goes out do you discover who has been swimming naked."

It's more important now than ever to buy great companies at reasonable (preferably cheap) prices. This might mean avoiding the high-profile, sexy investments -- such as Apple () and Google (). There is an army of analysts following these stocks, and you may not find any bargains.

Instead, use your role as a retail investor to your advantage. Look at smaller, under-followed companies. Niche manufacturing companies, business leasing companies and franchise-heavy businesses are examples of less interesting and often rewarding investments.

Choose a company with a solid management team and stable earnings growth over the past couple of years. Avoid stocks that have taken on large amounts of debt without boosting performance. When rates rise, some of these companies might be in a pinch if cash flows aren't enough to pay creditors. Don't obsess over the big winners; protect your downside instead. This seems obvious, but the best thing you can do in the is not lose money.

Without turning this into investing 101, take a look at what you are paying for a stock versus the value you receive. Take Netflix (), for example. Sure, it's a great company with a market-dominant position. We can safely say that streaming on-demand content over the Internet is the future of the industry. But at today's stock price, you're paying $75 for every $1 the company is set to earn in 2013, with the expectation that the company will pay you back (with interest) over the coming years. Regardless of the innovation and strengths of Netflix, that's a hefty premium with a lot of to-be-determined risk factors. The market may not continue to carry Netflix higher and higher. At some point the company's intrinsic value will dictate the stock price.

Overwhelmed?

It may sound a bit daunting, but there are infinite resources at your disposal via the Internet for finding great stock picks. You just need to do the homework. Investors can continue reaping the benefits of stocks, but it won't be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Work on your aim, and by the time the Fed shuts off the faucet completely (don't expect this for quite some time), you'll have a well-protected portfolio that is beta-irrelevant and (hopefully) earning that alpha.
