Unhappy with how your fave series is far

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon is once again shaking up traditional publishing models. This time, it's giving fans a chance to add their own personal touches to their favorite fiction - and get paid in the process.

This week, Amazon.com Inc announced "Kindle Worlds," which offers aspiring writers an opportunity to pen their own takes on franchises in books, TV, movies, even games and comics. The world's largest Internet retailer plans to license content, then accept submissions online that may then be sold through its Kindle ebook store.

Things will kick off with Amazon licensing three teen TV series - "Gossip Girl", "Pretty Little Liars" and "The Vampire Diaries" - from Warner Bros Television Group's Alloy Entertainment, Amazon said on its website. More content deals will be announced in coming weeks.

Amazon has in the past decade emerged as the most disruptive force in publishing. It popularized digital books with its Kindle store and e-reader, contributing to the demise of traditional bookstores such as Borders.

In its effort to legitimize fan fiction, the company is establishing a model under which it acts as publisher and pays fan-writers between 20 and 35 percent of sales, depending on length.

"There's probably not an author/fangirl alive who hasn't fantasized about being able to write about her favorite show," budding novelist Trish Milburn enthused on Amazon's website. "The fact that you can earn royalties doing so makes it even better."

(Reporting by Edwin Chan; Editing by Phil Berlowitz)

http://en.netlog.com/fannieregner/blog/blogid=24080324
http://romanmia.skyrock.com/3164369692-Reprint-1986-Yearbook-Murphy-High-School-Mobile-Alabama-download.html
http://en.netlog.com/laeiaalferoy9/blog/blogid=24080327
http://friendfeed.com/kilsryd/7c09e878/case-of-smoking-chimney-gramps-wiggins
http://ashantiutb.skyrock.com/3164369698-On-the-Sulphur-&-Chalybeate-Waters-of-Strathpeffer-Spa-book.html
http://marilynnikzub.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26654966
http://selenaloao.skyrock.com/3164369704-Dracula-Oxford-World-s-Classics-ebook-downloads.html
http://jaynepsu.skyrock.com/3164369706-The-Onion-Ad-Nauseam-Complete-News-Archives-Volume-13-online.html
http://eldoramunp.soup.io/post/315521107/Magic-and-Husbandry-the-Folk-Lore-of
http://daniellomd.soup.io/post/315521108/Sailing-Small-Inspiration-and-Instruction-for-the
http://twitpic.com/ct9c6u
http://fotarimu.jimdo.com/2013/05/25/downloads-say-to-this-mountain-shiloh-legacy-book/
http://lafuigbo.jimdo.com/2013/05/25/downloads-the-sekani-indians-of-british-columbia-canada-dept-of-mines-and-resources-bulletin-book/
http://elsieqaz.skyrock.com/3164369718-Moon-British-Columbia-Moon-Handbooks-ebook.html
http://angelesuary.skyrock.com/3164369716-Geometric-Algebra-for-Computer-Graphics-online.html
http://friendfeed.com/oiabirk/3df7ae92/alcohol-opposing-viewpoints
http://en.netlog.com/lexychristopoulosv/blog/blogid=24080341
http://carolannfoy.skyrock.com/3164369720-Download-Mineral-Biotechnology-Microbial-Aspects-of-Mineral.html
http://carmeleu.orbs.com/mysteries+and+legends+of+montana%3A+true
http://effienuep.skyrock.com/3164369722-Downloads-The-2011-Import-and-Export-Market-for-Parts-of-Dish-Washing.html

ECB's Draghi says euro zone on track for

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The euro zone economy is on track for a recovery later this year driven by the European Central Bank's loose monetary policy and demand from abroad, the bank's President Mario Draghi said.

The ECB cut interest rates to a new record low in May and said it would act again if necessary but its hand may in part be stayed this month and going forward by a rebound in inflation, which rose back to 1.4 percent in May from 1.2 percent in April.

That is still way below the bank's roughly 2 percent target and unemployment in the euro zone reached a fresh high in April at 12.2 percent, fuelling further calls for policymakers to do more to help the economy.

"The economic situation in the euro area remains challenging but there are a few signs of a possible stabilization, and our baseline scenario continues to be one of a very gradual recovery starting in the latter part of this year," Draghi said in the text of a speech prepared for the International Monetary Conference in Shanghai.

After the ECB's last policy meeting a month ago, the bank said economic activity should stabilize and recover gradually. The bank meets again on rates next Thursday.

Ahead of a court hearing in Germany later this month on complaints about the ECB's new government bond purchase program, dubbed Outright Monetary Transactions (OMT), Draghi spent much of the speech defending the initiative.

He said the threat of the ECB buying bonds had played a key role in calming financial markets, from which "virtually all economic agents, including corporations, banks and households" were benefiting.

"Nevertheless, vulnerabilities remain," Draghi said.

Calmer markets have given governments more breathing space to adjust and last week, the European Commission announced that several countries would have more time to meet deficit targets.

But Draghi urged governments to stick to their reform paths.

"To inspire confidence, policy-makers must follow-through with their fiscal reform agenda," Draghi said.

"In fact, little would be gained from a loosening of fiscal adjustment today if it creates market expectations that additional tightening will become necessary tomorrow."

In the medium term, he said, it had to be ensured that the adjustment was based on increasing productivity.

"Only through steadfast pursuit of such structural reforms can the competitiveness of euro area economies in the global marketplace be restored," Draghi said.

The ECB can only start buying a government's bonds once the country has signed up to strict reforms under a bailout program and even then, Draghi said, the OMT was "designed to keep government bond yields just below panic' levels".

"Not to bring them down to levels that would somehow help government solvency," he said. "ECB intervention under OMTs would not address those parts of sovereign bond yield spreads that are fundamentally justified."

Draghi said it was important to recall that always and especially in the present situation, the need for governments and parliaments to reform did not stem so much from the bond market but from the dramatic conditions in the labor market.

(Reporting by Gabriel Wildau, writing by Eva Kuehnen)

http://ronaldraau.skyrock.com/3164904970-The-Yes-Effect-e-book-downloads.html
http://todtfp.skyrock.com/3164904972-Download-Silent-Night-Holy-Night-with-music-chip.html
http://dinoyli.orbs.com/in+mistrust+we+trust%3A+can+democracy+sur
http://roconeed.jimdo.com/2013/05/28/download-tn-te-test-prep-gr-3-science-2003-book/
http://en.netlog.com/carlottahackler/blog/blogid=24208450
http://en.netlog.com/claudinenolte/blog/blogid=24208448
http://en.netlog.com/claudinecarolan/blog/blogid=24208451
http://coryoqhu.skyrock.com/3164905008-Le-Dije-Adios-a-Las-Citas-Amorosas-I-Kissed-Dating-Goodbye-book.html
http://tristazaou.skyrock.com/3164905028-Vicki-Hendricks-Author-Miami-Purity-A-Novel-Hardcover-read-online.html
http://en.netlog.com/georgettebrabham/blog/blogid=24208453
http://araceliayy.skyrock.com/3164905044-Turkey-in-the-21st-Century-ebook.html
http://latoyaeibqaa.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26825353

Cellphone Snoop Suspects Friend Of Havin

DEAR ABBY: I have a friend who I believe is having an affair. I have no concrete evidence, only a slew of circumstantial evidence such as odd work hours, blocks of mystery time set aside at night in his cellphone's day planner, and evading questions about texts from females.

I have no idea how to approach him, or if I even should. I wouldn't know how to begin the conversation with him because I have no solid proof. I always considered him to be a decent individual, but in the back of my mind now I'm thinking, "He's cheating on his wife!" What makes me uneasy is that it's all based on my hunch. I'm usually pretty good with my hunches, though.

Any words of wisdom would be welcome. -- NICK IN NEW ENGLAND

DEAR NICK: What are you doing going through your friend's cellphone day planner and reading his texts? He doesn't have to account to you for his time. For all you know the man may be in a 12-step program or a therapy group. If he wanted you to know what he's doing, he would tell you. Right now the "friendliest" thing you can do is mind your own business.

DEAR ABBY: I have worked at my job almost 10 years. Most of the owners are nice, and the staff is great. I like my job most days.

I had a really bad week recently. I felt like I couldn't do anything right. The week ended with a really angry text from my boss. He was right. I was in the wrong, and I apologized. He sent me another text, still angry, and my whole weekend was ruined by it. I kept thinking how mad he was, and how in a few days, I'd start my week in the doghouse.

I can't figure out how not to take work home with me. Also, I can't help but think he was wrong using a text as a means of discussing the issue. I don't want to make him angrier. How do I confront this issue? -- STILL UPSET IN OREGON

DEAR STILL UPSET: It would have been much better management if your boss had talked with you face to face about what was wrong with your performance. By now, your boss should have cooled off, and I suggest that you have a private chat with him and say that if he has a bone to pick with you, you would prefer to hear it from his lips rather than have it communicated in a text, which was hurtful.

DEAR ABBY: After my best friend of more than 20 years, I'll call him Tim, told me his wife had cheated on him, I confessed that I am in love with him. His response floored me. Tim announced that he has been in love with me all this time and can imagine growing old with only me.

A friend told me I'm committing adultery with Tim because he is now in the process of leaving his cheating wife for me. Am I? We haven't been intimate, nor do we plan to sleep with each other until the divorce is final.

I have loved Tim far longer than she has been in the picture, and I feel this is a chance for happiness that fate has offered us and we are meant to grow old together. Are we wrong to pursue a relationship? -- CONFLICTED IN CALIFORNIA

DEAR CONFLICTED: If Tim has been in love with you all these years, he couldn't have had much of a marriage. His wife's infidelity was his "get out of jail" ticket and he took it. I don't know what your "friend's" definition of adultery is, but according to Webster's dictionary, you're not committing it.

Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Write Dear Abby ator P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069.

To order "How to Write Letters for All Occasions," send your name and mailing address, plus check or money order for $7 (U.S. funds) to: Dear Abby -- Letter Booklet, P.O. Box 447, Mount Morris, IL 61054-0447. Shipping and handling are included in the price.

http://en.netlog.com/bennieclough/blog/blogid=24177047
http://elnorakbe.skyrock.com/3164811144-Secrets-to-Becoming-a-Leader-Discover-a-Lifetime-of-Lessons-Learned-On.html
http://friendfeed.com/iounyzc/40ccb617/lakebridge-spring-e-book-downloads
http://friendfeed.com/bdufe/cd4962ec/downloads-wicked-ways-of-malcolm-mclaren
http://diedreareo.orbs.com/download+company+c%3A+new+bremen+and+the
http://en.netlog.com/lamarmcgaugh/blog/blogid=24177041
http://brookeooei.skyrock.com/3164811146-Downloads-Five-Screenplays-book.html
http://trudybik.orbs.com/innovative+management+in+the+darpa+hig
http://albertmzbord.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26791279
http://kucofork.jimdo.com/2013/05/28/picture-maker-e-book/
http://gukakaki.jimdo.com/2013/05/28/the-power-of-the-dharma-an-introduction-to-hinduism-and-vedic-culture/
http://andresbno.skyrock.com/3164811158-Download-Workbook-for-Elementary-Harmony-Theory-and-Practice-e-book.html
http://twitpic.com/ctqco7
http://friendfeed.com/cdmuui/62f0597b/carnal-compromise-ebook-downloads
http://friendfeed.com/hfbck/806c43eb/download-2009-2014-outlook-for-in-cloud-hosted-e
http://glennasfqqkk.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26791296

How to fix one of the Galaxy S4s most in

Galaxy S4 AutocorrectTheres a lot to like aboutflagshipsmartphone; itsfor plenty of great reasons. As awesome as the phone is though, there are . For me, Samsungs keyboard might be my biggest qualm where core functionality is concerned, namely because it doesnt support an auto-correct function. Luckily for users like me who cant survive without auto-correct, theres an easy (and free) way to fix this huge omission.

[More from BGR: ]

As terrible as some auto-correct implementations are living without this crucial feature is far worse. Instead of auto-correct, Samsungs keyboard tries to predict the words users type in a field above the keyboard and allows them to tap suggestions to insert the completed word. This is a great solution for some people, but for others it just doesnt work as well as traditional auto-correct because it breaks the natural flow of typing on a smartphone.

[More from BGR: ]

The most annoying thing when it comes to the Galaxy S4s keyboard is that Android 4.2 Jelly Beans stock keyboard is terrific and it features what is likely the best auto-correct performance on the market, but Samsung has removed it from the S4. Thankfully, third-party developers have come to the rescue.

There are plenty of third-party keyboards available in the Google Play store. Different users have different preferences, but Im a fan of the stock Android 4.2 keyboard so I set out to find something comparable. As it turns out, Android developer VLLWPdid something even better than build a comparable keyboard it ported the Jelly Bean keyboard and made several improvements.

Jelly Bean Keyboard is a free app available in Googles Android app store, and its name gives us a pretty idea of what we can expect a new keyboard that looks and functions just like the stock keyboard in Jelly Bean. There are some differences, of course, and there are also a few enhancements. It also features a quick walk-through after it is installed that guides the user through the two steps that are necessary before it can be used: enabling Jelly Bean Keyboard and then switching to it as the devices default keyboard.

The free app is ad-supported, though ads only appear on the keyboards settings page so they are not obtrusiveat all. Jelly Bean Keyboard also supports various different languages, emoji, themes and a variety of advanced settings. A paid Pro version of the app is also available and it removes the ads while adding features like more themes, new customization and layout options, and gesture support. It allows users to add a row of numbers above the standard keyboard layout as well, which is the one thing I missed from Samsungs Galaxy S4 keyboard while testing the free version of the app.

Jelly Bean Keyboard is available immediately in the Google Play store for free, whileJelly Bean Keyboard Procosts $2.99.

This article was

http://dierdremtt.skyrock.com/3163812020-Downloads-My-Lupine-Lover-Siren-Publishing-Classic-Manlove.html
http://mohammedaqm.soup.io/post/315064637/Download-Four-Board-Books-Walt-Disneys-Winnie
http://brianneoooyo.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26522077
http://jacquikaqoo.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26522078
http://en.netlog.com/conradstroud/blog/blogid=23937465
http://celinaeoq.orbs.com/when+the+snow+comes%2C+they+will+take
http://twitpic.com/cso9jx
http://friendfeed.com/ofafor/2fd7ac8e/download-sources-of-korean-tradition-vol-2-from
http://friendfeed.com/eiuytde/4e8f767e/downloads-customs-etiquette-of-italy
http://armandaqyu.skyrock.com/3163812064-Downloads-Rider-of-the-Rifle-Rock-Sagebrush-Westerns.html
http://rayfordfiru.skyrock.com/3163812066-Downloads-Civil-Procedure-6th-Edition-Examples-&-Explanations-e-book.html

Amid the revulsion at the earlier horror of the clip, this became a mere background detail.

That footage was just the start of a string of ever-larger WikiLeaks document releases, reporting, and revelations that shook the faith of many around the world in the U.S. governments activitiesfrom revelations of , through , toon U.N. diplomats in U.S. Embassy cables.

Now, two years after the last release of that kind of significancecomes an opportunity to reflect on WikiLeaks; its most famous source, Bradley Manning; and its ever-divisive founder, Julian Assange.

That opportunity is the release of Alex Gibneys We Steal Secrets, a fast-paced, two-hour foray through the story of WikiLeaks, its founder, and what happened next. Its a film thats been roundly condemned by Julian Assange and his remaining supporters long before theyve gone to the trouble of seeing it. Why?

One all-too-plausible reason is that Gibneys filspoiler alert, if its possible to spoil a documentaryis perhaps the nearest you can come to living the WikiLeaks experience without having actually been there.

For me, the film was more like dj vusomething Id lived once already. From summer 2010, WikiLeaks became my life for months. First, at the U.K.-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism, I was part of the team working for 10 weeks investigating the Iraq War Logs for Al Jazeera English and Arabic, Channel 4s flagship Dispatches documentary, and .

I then went a step further, working directly for WikiLeaks for several months on the embassy cablesanalyzing the cables, distributing them to staff, writing press releases, appearing on TV, and more.

It was groundbreaking, important journalism, but it was done against the backdrop of an organization crumbling under pressure, crossing ethical boundaries, and placing people needlessly in danger.

For me, it was too much, and I left. Since then, in a leak of , WikiLeaks has posted that I sold them out for cash (nope), was a wanna-be spy who interviewed for MI5 (nope), and stole their dataincluding, bizarrely, my own copy of a gag order they asked me to sign to stop me speaking out on what I didnt like.

Seeing yourself portrayed by WikiLeaks is like walking through a circus hall of mirrors: theres just enough resemblance for you to recognize yourself, but youre seriously distortedand usually in a way that makes you look grotesque.

Many made their mind up on Julian Assange long agobut here, for the record, is what really happened in those fateful few months.

The honeymoon phase was real: WikiLeaks and its partners were doing important work on revelatory documents, and the reaction against it was often abhorrentAssange and WikiLeaks received , were subject to blockadesand underwent .

The pressure and the stress were real, and needless. But the atmosphere of paranoia and defensiveness they created led to WikiLeaks committing serious misdeeds of its owntoo serious to ignore.

One controversy provided the backdrop of all of WikiLeaks' activities during these months: Assanges Swedish sex case. Two women accused Assange of sexual assaults, relating to either tearing a condom or initiating unprotected sex while his partner was sleeping.

Only three people know exactly what happened on the two nights that led to Assanges prosecution, and its for the courts to establish more. Its not for me or the media to judge Assanges guilt. But the witness statements make it clear this was no set-up job: the accounts are messy, difficult, and the undisputed facts show a picture far more complex than a honey trap. That wasnt enough to stop Assangeand members of his legal team, through insinuationto set the ball rolling on three years of abuse, denigration, and suspicion against his two accusers.

One of the key instigations was this quote: Im not saying it was a honey trap. Im not saying it was not a honey trap, AssangeJohn Humphreys, the anchor of a major U.K. radio show, initiating an open season of speculation, abuse, death threats, and more against his accusers.

Whatever happened to those women three years ago, theyve certainly gone through hell since.

As Assange was remanded in custody for a week in December 2010, Kristinn Hrafnsson, the silver-haired Icelandic journalist who is the second-most high-profile WikiLeaker, and I conferred on how to handle the media strategy, as every mainstream outlet ran the Will WikiLeaks collapse without its founder? story.

We agreed on a simple line: Julian was WikiLeaks founder and editor, and had its full supportbut his court issues were a private matter, and we were getting on with publishing 251,000 embassy cables.

That line wasnt acceptable to Julian. Within 24 hours, once hed had word, he reversed it. Julians fight was WikiLeaks fight. This was a freedom-of-speech issue, not a sex-offense trial. Wed just have to live with it. Consequently, for the last three years, huge and significant Internet freedom issues have played second fiddle to one mans melodrama.

All of that is distasteful. But its not why I quit.

The reason I quit was because of a friend of Julians whose activities were unstomachable and unforgivable. That man was Israel Shamir. Shamir is an anti-Semitic writer, a , and a man with ties and friends in Russian security services. He and Julianunknown to ushad been in friendly contact for years. It was a friendship that would have serious consequences.

Introduced to WikiLeaks staff and supporters under a false name, Shamir was given direct access to more than 90,000 of the U.S. Embassy cables, covering Russia, all of Eastern Europe, parts of the Middle East, and Israel. This was, for quite some time, denied by WikiLeaks. But thats never a denial Ive found convincing: the reason I know he has them is that I gave them to him, at Assanges orders, not knowing who he was.

Why did this prove to be a grave mistake? Not just for Shamirs views, which are easy to Google, but for what he did next. The first hints of trouble came through contacts from various Putin-influenced Russian media outlets. A pro-Putin outlet got in touch to say Shamir had been asking for $10,000 for access to the cables. He was selling the material we were working to give away free, to responsible outlets.

Worse was to come.and some photographic evidence, suggesting Shamir had given the cables to Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus, Europes last dictator. Shamir had written a pro-Belarus article, shortly before photos emerged of him leaving the interior ministry. The day after, Belaruss dictator gave a speech saying he was establishing a WikiLeaks for Belarus, citing some stories and information appearing in the genuine (and then unpublished) cables.

Assange refused and blocked any attempts at investigation, and released public statements that were simply untrue.

Disturbingly, Assange seems to have a personal motivation for staying friendly with Shamir. Shamirs son, Johannes Wahlstrom, is apparently being called as one of Assanges defense witnesses in his Swedish trial. Thats not the only time self has come before principle.

On other occasions, Assanges selfishness needlessly risked WikiLeaks financial future.

When first trying to gain bail money, Assange sought to empty WikiLeaks bank accounts to pay the cash (a scheme which would never have worked given the rules). But luckily for WikiLeaks, the trustees of the organizations then-main bank account, the Wau Holland foundation, rightly refused the request, which would have all but cleared out the account. Given the duration of the banking blockade, that money eventually had to last around 18 months. Had Assange got his way, the money that got WikiLeaks through the blockade wouldnt have been there.

The final straw wasas it always isthe attempted cover-up. In November 2010, WikiLeaks asked everyone who worked there to sign a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) covering the material we were being given access tonot to sell it, disclose without permission, or similar. Given the importance of what we were working on, that seemed reasonable. Everyone, including me, signed.

By January, the situation had changed. With me and others concerned about what we saw as ethical lapses left, right, and center, Assange produced a new NDA, silencing anyone who signed it for a full decade against saying a word about WikiLeaks activities, on the pain of millions of dollars of penalties.

Faced with the bizarre situation of being asked to sign a gag order by a whistleblowing organization, . Encouraged by Julian (I later learned), WikiLeaks staffers kept me up until 3 a.m. pressuring me to sign. Early the next morning, I awoke with Assange sat on my bed, pressuring me to signeven before I was dressed. I held out, eventually left our remote location, and didnt go back.

This is the mess you get into when you buy into theas Julian willingly does.

Eventually, youve got to back your claims up. And thats what is needed: people to really believe in the principles WikiLeaks supposedly stands for, rather than in a cartoon hero or villain figure.

The consequences of mistakes, of arrogance, of division, are all too real.

Assange isnt entirely venal. His problem is noble cause corruption: behavior hed rightly condemn in others, he excuses in himself, because he believes, at his core, he is the good guy.

Myself, Im reminded of the conclusion of George Orwells Animal Farm: Julian Assange has become everything he originally, rightly, despised.

There is, though, one happier lesson from WikiLeaks, that is rightly highlighted in Gibneys film: we havent paid enough attention to Bradley Manning. Manning is too easy to turn into a poster boy, an easy icon, a cause.

Manning the human is more complex, more flawed, more fascinating, and more inspiring.

Gibneys focus on Mannings flaws and conviction alike shows the human story at the center of WikiLeaks. It shows the need to support people like Manning.

And it shows that whistleblowers arent cartoon heroes made of different stuff to everyone else.

Anyone has the potential to do what Manning did: act on conscience to break the rules in a good cause. And because of that, despite the rows and betrayals, the WikiLeaks story remains one that can give everyone a lot of reason to hope.

Related from The Daily Beast

--

http://friendfeed.com/bpuoayi/967efc1b/mind-reading-card-tricks-download
http://friendfeed.com/oohau/5df10f0d/calculus-of-variations-and-partial
http://karleenbpn.skyrock.com/3165207540-Male-and-Female-He-Made-Them-Questions-and-Answers-about-Marriage-and.html
http://karleenbpn.skyrock.com/3165207548-Downloads-Original-Short-Stories-Volume-12.html
http://shanadear.skyrock.com/3165207538-Glass-Construction-Material-Products-in-NAFTA-to-2016-Market-Guide.html
http://twitpic.com/cu4iwf
http://friendfeed.com/siyube/50c1b6de/wit-wisdom-of-winston-churchill-ebook
http://natashazlne.orbs.com/
http://bruceukcu.orbs.com/
http://dorlaryd.soup.io/post/316244495/Nationwide-book
http://joyme.skyrock.com/3165207638-Reprint-1957-Yearbook-Flathead-High-School-Kalispell-Montana-book.html
http://jasperamo.orbs.com/download+mystic+lighthouse%3A+mystery+o
http://freddiecono.skyrock.com/3165207648-The-Gay-Detective-e-book-downloads.html

Science Advisor Gives Hopeful Progress R

President Obama has restored science to its rightful place in the White House, says John Holdren, Obama's senior science advisor.

"Science is again where it should be," he told an audience of 200 as part of a lecture series at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. on Wednesday, although he warned that the president's initiatives are threatened by a Congress hesitant to support them.

Holdren, who leads the President's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and co-chairs the President's Council on Science and Technology (PCAST), told the crowd that he has helped Obama revitalize several science programs that lay dormant under the previous administration. These programs, he says, are integral to securing the U.S.'s position at the forefront of global innovation on climate change, biomedicine and, of course, space. He has had less success, however, ensuring funding for new research projects, particularly those that are experimental by nature. Citing a Congressional attempt to require research groups like the National Science Foundation (NSF) to prove that their projects are "in the national interest," Holdren warns that the hurdle could have a freezing effect on critical scientific research.

As evidence of Obama's achievements since entering the White House in March 2009, Holdren cites the resurrection of several international task forces aimed at addressing climate change, including a key partnership between the U.S. and some of the world's other top polluters, such as China and India. The President has also jumpstarted another key partnership with China, the U.S.-China Innovation Dialogue, tasked with tackling cyber theft.

Under Obama, Holdren adds, PCAST has shifted priorities to give particular attention to climate change. In 2008, the President renamed the Climate Change Science Program (CCSP)--which under President Bush had focused primarily on research aimed at testing what he saw as theories of global warming--calling it the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), and turned it into a comprehensive national research program charged with assessing, predicting and responding to climate change. "He really likes working with scientists," says Holdren of President Obama, "And he understands why science is important for the national agenda."

The President has also used the 2014 budget to highlight scientific priorities, from preserving funding for USGCRP to setting aside money to overhaul science and math education. But he's run into many obstacles, says Holdren, primarily in the form of a Congress that has been resistant to funding science programs. "It's not the budget we'd wanted in better times," remarks Holdren. Nevertheless, Obama has earmarked funding that would prepare an additional 100,000 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers for grades K-12 and create a Master Teaching Corps of leading science and math instructors. The Master Teaching Corps, which was supposed to receive funding in 2012, was returned to the 2014 budget after Congress refused to appropriate the necessary funds.

Beyond revamping the way science and math are taught in American schools, the President has taken pains to broadcast the importance of science to young people, Holdren says, noting that Obama has used the presidential pulpit to "talk more about science" and to increase the visibility of researchers and innovators by inviting them to such events as the three White House science fairs Obama has already overseen. "The President always says, if we bring football stars to the White House, we should certainly be bringing scientists."

Interrupted by audience members complaining about the President's cuts to funding for space exploration, Holdren replied that the NASA of the previous administration was badly managed and poorly funded. "The NASA we inherited was hopelessly behind schedule," he said. He also added that Obama has taken steps to re-balance the administration's space policy, including preserving $1 billion in funds (just a 0.8 percent cut) for NASA and continuing to fund Mars Curiosity, an SUV-sized robotic rover launched in 2011 whose mission Obama extended indefinitely in December 2012.

Followon Twitterand .

Visitfor the latest in science, health and technology news.

 2013 .
Middle Schooler's Hearing Aids Can't Tun

DEAR ABBY: Last year, I began to lose my hearing due to a genetic disorder and now I have to wear hearing aids. I will be a freshman in high school next year. My teachers all have to wear microphones so I can hear them.

I'm scared other kids will make fun of me for being different. I have already gotten laughed at. What should I do? -- EMBARRASSED TEEN

DEAR EMBARRASSED TEEN: When people laugh at a person who has a disability, it is usually out of ignorance. Because this happened at school or another place where there is adult supervision, you and your parents should talk to the principal or person in authority so that person can speak privately with the guilty parties and explain why your hearing aids and the microphone are necessary. Your parents should also have a meeting with the principal of your high school before you go so the problem can be avoided.

When I was in grammar school, a classmate of mine had severe hearing loss. Because the students understood what her problem was, she was never ridiculed.

P.S. Making fun of a child who has a disability is a form of bullying, and should be treated as such.

DEAR ABBY: I'm 25 and have been with my husband for nine years, married for four. I cheated on him twice. He caught me both times.

Even though I strayed, he decided to stay. But now he treats me like I'm a child and a prisoner. He took away my phone, my Internet and I can't go anywhere. He says this is my punishment for what I did. Do I really deserve that? I know we're both wrong, but is he more wrong? -- BROKEN WIFE

DEAR BROKEN WIFE: From where I sit, you are equally wrong. How long ago did the cheating incidents occur? If they are recent, you two should be in marriage counseling. If they were long ago, then you must decide if you want to live the rest of your life being treated as a child and a prisoner.

Your husband doesn't trust you because you haven't been trustworthy. But taking away your phone and Internet and keeping you under lock and key will not help you to rebuild it.

You two need more help than anyone can give you in a letter, and I hope you will seek it. If he won't go for counseling, you should go without him because I don't think the status quo can last.

DEAR ABBY: My sister and brother-in-law passed away two years ago. I am the only living relative of their 28-year-old son, "Louis." He is a loner, spoiled and a poor houseguest. I invite Louis over only because I don't want him to be alone at holiday times. My husband, teenage daughter and I have nothing in common with him, and frankly, he spoils our holidays.

How can I stop inviting my nephew without feeling guilty? Or is there another solution? I hate to make waves. -- HOLIDAY HATER IN CANADA

DEAR HOLIDAY HATER: If you invite your nephew for fewer holidays you will be able to ease your conscience, enjoy more holidays and allow the young man a chance to become more proactive in planning entertainment for himself.

DEAR ABBY: I may be wrong, but isn't it presumptuous for someone to open the message card on a flower delivery before you get home when the flowers are for you? -- KIMBERLY IN MARYLAND

DEAR KIMBERLY: You're not wrong. The person opening the cards isn't being helpful, but nosy. And it wouldn't be out-of-line to tell the person not to do it again.

Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips.
Valeant near deal to acquire Bausch &amp

By Greg Roumeliotis and Jessica Toonkel

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Canada's Valeant Pharmaceuticals International is nearing a deal to acquire eye care company Bausch & Lomb Holdings Inc from Warburg Pincus LLC for about $9 billion, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday.

Valeant shares spiked to their highest level since 2001 and were up 13 percent at C$86.86 in afternoon trading in Toronto.

"This deal would not be too surprising given that Valeant has said it wants to do a big, mega deal and there are not that many candidates," said David Krempa, an analyst at Morningstar. "Still, I would not expect that they are done doing big deals."

The source that spoke to Reuters on Friday requested anonymity because the matter is not public. Montreal-based Valeant could not be immediately reached for comment. Bausch & Lomb and Warburg Pincus declined to comment.

The Wall Street Journal, which earlier reported on the talks over Bausch & Lomb, said a deal might come as soon as next week.

Separately on Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice said that ISTA Pharmaceuticals, which Bausch & Lomb acquired in March 2012 for $500 million, pleaded guilty to charges related to the drug Xibrom, including offering doctors kickbacks to prescribe it. ISTA will pay $33.5 million related to conduct from 2006 to 2011, Bausch & Lomb said in a statement.

"It kind of removes an obvious overhang," said a Valeant shareholder. But "I would expect that, regardless of whether Valeant was going to be interested in them or not."

The shareholder, who asked not to be named as the transaction is not complete, said it makes sense for Valeant to increase its clout in opthalmology by acquiring Bausch & Lomb.

Valeant had attempted to buy eye drugmaker ISTA in late 2011 in a hostile bid.

Last month Valeant tried to acquire generic drugmaker Actavis Inc in an all-stock deal that would have topped $13 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter. The talks broke down, and Actavis ended up with a deal to buy pharmaceutical company Warner Chilcott Plc.

"At first glance, it looks like Mike Pearson has pulled yet another rabbit out of his hat," Gautam Dhingra, chief executive of High Pointe Capital Management, a small Valeant investor, said, referring to Valeant's CEO. "We are grateful for his magical acts but keeping a close eye on whether it is possible to keep pulling bigger and bigger rabbits out of the same hat."

Valeant has been on the acquisition trail since its 2010 takeover by Biovail Corp, which assumed the Valeant name. It has been pursuing deals with strong cash flow in high-growth areas where big pharmaceutical companies have little presence.

The company, known for prescription drugs such as anti-depressant Wellbutrin and over-the-counter remedies such as Cold-FX, has built up its dermatology and anesthetics portfolio in a dozen deals in the past year, most recently for Obagi Medical Products.

Bausch & Lomb would bring to Valeant its well-known contact lenses, drugs to treat eye conditions such as glaucoma, and instruments and devices used in eye surgery.

If the deal goes through, some analysts wonder if Valeant would spin off or sell Bausch & Lomb's surgical instruments business. That area would be new to Valeant, and big players including Novartis AG and Abbott Laboratories are already entrenched there. About 17 percent of Bausch & Lomb's $3 billion in revenues last year came from that business.

Valeant has become a stock market darling, jumping about 50 percent so far this year, in large part because of its success in cutting costs at the companies it acquires, particularly in research and development.

But Bausch & Lomb is run by a private equity firm, so cost-cutting opportunities may be below average, Dhingra said. Private equity firms generally have a reputation for being cost cutters.

Bausch & Lomb filed with U.S. regulators for an initial public offering in March. At the same time, Warburg Pincus was exploring an outright sale of the company, a source told Reuters.

(Additional reporting by writing by Rod Nickel in Winnipeg, Manitoba; Editing by Lisa Von Ahn, Phil Berlowitz, John Wallace and Leslie Adler)

http://thomasinabyu.skyrock.com/3163778120-Download-Making-Thanksgiving-Traditions.html
http://friendfeed.com/rdrba/af7a4ddd/how-to-write-winning-college-application-essay
http://friendfeed.com/oyqco/6609410e/downloads-hope-chest-legacy-of-love-e-book
http://lornaov.orbs.com/the+2011+import+and+export+market+for
http://volidell.jimdo.com/2013/05/23/gold-coins-of-the-new-orleans-mint-1839-1909-downloads/
http://sylvesterbbot.orbs.com/
http://brianrkef.skyrock.com/3163778148-Book-of-University-Club-of-Detroit-1905-e-book.html
http://friendfeed.com/sorlo/1b8aaa0f/kingdom-come-e-book-downloads
http://alfonzoqqt.skyrock.com/3163778162-Forgive-Us-Our-Debts-read-online.html
http://friendfeed.com/kdeddpe/4bb36c61/wildlife-photography-from-snapshots-to-great
http://kiethzho.skyrock.com/3163778164-Download-The-Other-Side-Of-The-Story.html
http://fuzekill.jimdo.com/2013/05/23/vernon-god-little-ebook-downloads/
http://friendfeed.com/oqqqda/38d570ad/posteriori-error-analysis-via-duality-theory
http://friendfeed.com/mdnun/257dc2e5/downloads-internalism-and-epistemology
http://friendfeed.com/uuouuiy/d8ea92b1/downloads-comment-ca-va-la-terre-e-book
http://friendfeed.com/iizuyoy/5d4a8c2f/download-reply-of-right-honourable-attorney
http://friendfeed.com/rdrba/90d9074f/naked-i-leave-download
http://nylapdmy.orbs.com/achieving+fair+value%3A+how+companies+ca
http://harmonyitoy.soup.io/post/315039443/Download-Doctor-Eccos-Cyberpuzzles-book

Another HIV vaccine fails as govt halts

WASHINGTON (AP) Bad news in the fight against the AIDS virus: The government is halting a large U.S. study of a possible HIV vaccine because the experimental shots aren't preventing infection.

The study had enrolled about 2,500 people, mostly gay men, in 19 cities. Half received an experimental vaccine developed by the National Institutes of Health, and half received dummy shots.

A safety review this week found that slightly more volunteers who had received the vaccine later became infected with HIV. It's not clear why.

The NIH said Thursday that it is stopping vaccinations, but will continue to study the volunteers' health.

Multiple attempts at creating an AIDS vaccine have failed over the years. But researchers continue to try, pointing to modest success in a 2009 study in Thailand.

http://wuzahajj.jimdo.com/2013/05/22/providence-downloads/
http://dillonpio.soup.io/post/314902180/Handbook-of-Depression-in-Adolescents-book-downloads
http://friendfeed.com/vcppo/455ec3a0/those-who-dare-book-one-in-raiding-forces-series
http://forrestli.orbs.com/plymouth+muscle+cars+1966-1971+%28brookl
http://deniceeuk.skyrock.com/3163675162-Wiffle-Ball-Summer-The-Ride-of-the-Elmoron-book-downloads.html
http://neilemdb.skyrock.com/3163675172-Downloads-Making-Change-A-Transformational-Guide-to-Christian-Money.html
http://friendfeed.com/ydydm/48275341/feed-your-brain-lose-belly-read-online
http://rufusvqo.skyrock.com/3163675180-From-Monkeys-to-Men-and-Back-A-Preposterously-Essential-Science-Lesson.html
http://leroyibra.skyrock.com/3163675182-Sac-and-Fox-Indians-in-Kansas-Mokohoko-s-stubbornness-Some-history-of.html
http://twitpic.com/cshsno
http://friendfeed.com/foilb/1944136b/evaluating-what-good-teachers-do-eight
http://jeromemesl.skyrock.com/3163675184-Trust-and-Power-Consumers-the-Modern-Corporation-and-the-Making-of-the.html
http://vedaubme.skyrock.com/3163675186-Nachrichten-Von-Ontario-Deutschsprachige-Literatur-Von-Kanada.html
http://ingakeyeos.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26501569
http://friendfeed.com/mcnsonk/1ea10a98/african-nova-scotian-mi-kmaw-relations
http://merleneyasqzi.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26501570
http://jasperamo.orbs.com/resisting+structural+evil%3A+love+as+ec
http://krystynasyyl.soup.io/post/314902213/Streets-for-People-a-Primer-for-Americans
