Researchers at Ohio University in Athens found that while awhips its head from side to side to gorge on its victims, the Allosaurus a theropod that lived about 150 million years ago in the late may have been a more dexterous hunter, using its neck and body to tug flesh from carcasses, the same way a falcon does.

"Apparently one size doesn't fit all when it comes to dinosaur feeding styles," Eric Snively, a paleontologist at Ohio University and lead author of the new study, said in a statement. "Many people think ofas a smaller and earlier version of T. rex, but our engineering analyses show that they were very different predators." []

The study's findings were published online today (May 21) in the .

Build-a-dinosaur

To study the dinosaur's feeding technique, Snively and his colleagues ran sophisticated computer simulations of an Allosaurus' head and neck movements using a high-resolution cast of the dinosaur's skull and neck, plus CT scans of its bones. By combining dinosaur anatomy with mechanical engineering and computer visualization, the researchers were able to experiment with how the Allosaurus attacked prey, fed, or simply looked around.

"The engineering approach combines all the biological data things like where the muscle forces attach and where the joints stop motion into a single model," study co-author John Cotton, a mechanical engineer and assistant professor in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University, said in a statement. "We can then simulate the physics and predict what Allosaurus was actually capable of doing."

The researchers worked with anatomists to "re-flesh" their 3D Allosaurus computer model. In the process of building these neck and jaw muscles, air sinuses, and other soft tissues, the researchers found an unusually placed neck muscle, called longissimus capitis superficialis.

In most other predatory dinosaurs, including the , this neck muscle stretches from the side of the neck to a bony structure on the back outer corners of the skull, the researchers said.

"This neck muscle acts like a rider pulling on the reins of a horse's bridle," Snively explained. "If the muscle on one side contracts, it would turn the head in that direction, but if the muscles on both sides pull, it pulls the head straight back."

A different kind of predator

With the Allosaurus, however, the researchers found that the longissimus muscle was attached much lower on the skull, which would have equipped the dinosaur with a different set of head and neck movements.

"Allosaurus was uniquely equipped to drive its head down into prey, hold it there, and then pull the head straight up and back with the neck and body, tearing flesh from the carcass kind of like how a power shovel or backhoe rips into the ground," Snively said.

In today's modern world, this same feeding technique is seen with small falcons, the researchers said.

The scientists also found that the Allosaurus had a relatively light skull, which likely made it a more dexterous predator, compared with .

"Allosaurus, with its lighter head and neck, was like a skater who starts spinning with her arms tucked in, whereas T. rex, with its massive head and neck and heavy teeth out front, was more like the skater with her arms fully extended and holding bowling balls in her hand," Snively said. "She and the T. rex need a lot more muscle force to get going."

A non-Saudi, whose nationality and age were not given, died on Tuesday, the Health Ministry said on its website late on Wednesday. It said he had been admitted to a hospital in al-Qassim several days ago with an "acute respiratory syndrome".

"Most cases recorded so far are among elderly patients and people with multiple chronic diseases," it added.

A World Health Organization (WHO) spokesman confirmed it had been notified of the new death from the disease, which the WHO plans to call Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

"It is in a different area and doesn't appear to be linked to the recent outbreak and cluster in the eastern part of the country," Glenn Thomas told reporters in Geneva.

The WHO's tally of people who have died in the kingdom from nCoV/MERS since it surfaced last year is 18, including one who died in Britain last year after arriving from Saudi Arabia.

The virus, which can cause coughing, fever and pneumonia, is from the same family as the one responsible for an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that killed 775 people worldwide in 2003.

The WHO says a total of 44 cases of the new virus have been recorded so far, 22 of them fatal. Saudi Arabia has had 33 of the cases.

WHO officials say the new virus appears to be transmissible between humans, but only after prolonged, close contact.

The road to the community's dump is washed out, so officials have come up with a plan to fly the bad meat to the disposal site by helicopter.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (http://bit.ly/14bAGtg) emergency responders in Galena are preparing a plan to collect meat that has been rotting in people's refrigerators and freezers since last week. That's when an ice jam backed Yukon River water into the community of nearly 500 people about 270 miles west of Fairbanks.

Many residents were evacuated from the town, and emergency responders have asked them to delay their return while they deal with flooded fuel tanks, gas fumes and other issues.

At home, the relationship is still smooth sailing.

Patrick and Stenhouse escaped for some relaxation on a boat after their first dust-up on the track since the NASCAR rookies announced in January they were dating. NASCAR's power couple rubbed each other the wrong way during Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 after Stenhouse drove his car into the side of Patrick's car and effectively ended her race.

There was no escaping the relationship doghouse for Stenhouse the two shared a ride home.

"You don't not talk about it because you're riding home together," Patrick said Wednesday. "There's a few silent moments for sure, many moments. I was upset. I wasn't necessarily strictly just upset at him. He was there three wide as part of the issue."

Patrick was racing in the middle of the three-wide pack when she was hit by Stenhouse and collided with Brad Keselowski. Patrick's No. 10 Chevrolet suffered serious damage and she finished 29th, her sixth straight result of 25th or worse in her first full season in Sprint Cup.

"I've always given him a lot of room and he's done the same for me," Patrick said. "It was just one of those situations where we're on a restart and we're all trying to dig for what we can."

Unlike her dinged-up car, the two were quickly on the mend.

"We'll be fine. We're fine," she said. "We had a lovely day on the boat, on the lake, got a sun tan."

Sounds like fun. At least, more fun than a weekend at the track, where Patrick is off to a rocky start as a Cup regular. She swept the sport and herself into the national spotlight when she won the pole for the season-opening Daytona 500 and finished a solid eighth. But Patrick finished 39th the following race in Phoenix and has no finished no better than 12th in any race outside of Daytona.

Patrick, 30th in the points standings, is not the only member of Stewart-Haas Racing in a slump. Ryan Newman is 16th and Tony Stewart 20th, one reason why SHR came to test Wednesday at Pocono Raceway. Richard Childress Racing drivers Jeff Burton, Paul Menard and Kevin Harvick, who won at Charlotte Motor Speedway, also tested at Pocono.

Newman finished sixth Sunday, Stewart was seventh and Patrick was pleased with her run before the crash, making it a solid night for the team.

"It doesn't make you feel like it's turned around," Stewart said. "It's a step in the process. I don't know you can say just one weekend automatically turns a season around. That's why we're here today. We have a lot of work to do. It's a sign of progress."

Patrick said testing was useful because the 2-mile triangle track was the last one she hadn't raced on since making the shift from IndyCar to NASCAR. The series runs this weekend at Dover International Speedway before heading to Pocono next weekend. There's a second Cup race Aug. 4.

Patrick has a long way to go before she's truly comfortable at Pocono or just about any other track on the circuit, for now. Patrick has a pair of tracks on the horizon that have been kind to her when she hits Daytona and Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July. Patrick scored six top-10 finishes, including third place in 2009, in seven Indianapolis 500s. Yes, it's a different series, but a comfortable track could lead to a more confident Patrick.

Not that she's showing any nerves in the garage.

"We haven't had to do a lot of coaching with her," Stewart said. "Her input is as good as ours right out of the box. That's the one thing we noticed the first weekend we took her (testing) last year. Her feedback is so strong."

It was needed at Pocono. Newman credited a recent test at Dover for the solid outing at Charlotte. Perhaps Charlotte and the Pocono test can help fix all that ails SHR.

"There's a lot of things to be really excited about," Stewart said. "I hope four weeks from now, we can come back here and say, 'Yes, we have the answers.'"

The New York Democrat sent letters Friday to the Treasury Department and Federal Communications Commission, both of which are reviewing Softbank Corp.'s offer to buy 70 percent of Sprint Nextel Corp. for $20.1 billion.

"I have real concerns that this deal, if approved, could make American industry and government agencies far more susceptible to cyber attacks from China and the People's Liberation Army," Schumer said in a statement.

Satellite TV broadcaster Dish Network Corp. has a competing, $25.5 billion offer for all of Sprint, and has raised the security issue as one reason Sprint shareholders should prefer its bid.

Softbank has offered to remove the Chinese-made equipment that's already in Sprint's network to assuage security concerns.

The Pentagon said this month that China appeared to be engaged in cyberspying against the U.S. government, the first time it has made such an assertion in its annual report on Chinese military power. Chinese authorities dismiss the allegations. There have been no reports of Chinese-made networking equipment helping the hackers.

China's Huawei Technologies has in recent years become one of the world's largest makers of telecommunications equipment. Its products are widely deployed except in the U.S., where security concerns have kept it out of the running for most contracts.

Huawei wasn't mentioned by Schumer or Softbank by name. Bill Plummer, a Washington-based spokesman for Huawei, said Schumer's concerns are misdirected. He noted that most non-Chinese companies buy Chinese components, have their equipment built in China and employ Chinese engineers. Huawei is singled out for scrutiny, he suggested, because it's Chinese-led.

"No matter who wins the bid for Sprint, the future network will be sourced, in part, from China, just as are the networks of AT&T and Verizon and every other carrier," Plummer said. "Suggestions that networks and data will somehow be made safer by blackballing vendors based on geography of headquarters are either misinformed or dissembling."

Jessica Straus, senior manager of government relations at Dish, previously served as finance director for Friends of Schumer, the senator's campaign organization. Dish spokesman Bob Toevs dismissed that connection as a "sideshow that fails to address the serious national security concerns raised by SoftBank-Sprint."

Softbank hopes to close the Sprint deal on July 1, but needs approval from the FCC and the Treasury Department's Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.

"It wasn't until the 1300s and this version of Inferno that it became terrifying. Dante has had enormous influence on the Christian view of hell."

The author, who said he tries not to read reviews of his books, also spoke of his unique way of dealing with writer's block, by suspending himself upside down to help get his creative juices flowing.

"It does help. You've just got to relax and let go. The more you do it the more you let go. And then soon it's just, wow," he said.
