MADRID, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Sevilla chalked up their third win over Deportivo la Coruna in a week to book their place in the last eight in the quarter-finals of the Spanish King's Cup knockout competition.

Sevilla won the first leg of their last 16 tie 2-1 at home last week, before beating Deportivo 3-1 in La Corunaon Saturday night.

Wednesday again saw Sevilla visit La Coruna and the side coached by Manolo Jimenez made its intentions clear after just 34 seconds when Jesus Navas scored the first of the night. Luis Fabiano scored two more goals before half time to leave the tie totally resolved in Sevilla's favor.

Sevilla is joined in the next round by Betis, who followed up a 1- 0 away win to Real Union with a 1-0 home win. Arzu scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half.

Mallorca made good a 3-1 first leg win against Almeria with a 1- 1 draw in the second round that saw Gregorio Mnzano's side into the next phase, while Sporting Gijon also progressed to the last eight despite a 2-1 away defeat in Valladolid.

However, had it not been for an injury time goal from Jorge Garcia, Sporting would have been out of the competition after Valladolid had taken a 2-0 lead through Nestor Dortmund Canobbio and Jorge Leon.

Valencia needed extra time goals from Vicente Rodriguez and Joaquin Sanchez to qualify against Racing Santander. Vicente had put the Cup holders ahead with a first half penalty only for Gustavo Colsa to equalize before the break.

Meanwhile watches-w a first half goal from Espanyol's Roman Martinez saw his side through on away goals against Poli Ejido. Espanyol had lost the away leg 2-1 to the third category team, but Martinez's goal saw the Primera Liga outfit through.

Espanyol will face FC Barcelona, another side who made good their result from the first leg.

Barcelona won 3-1 in the Vicente Calderon Stadium last week, but found themselves behind in the CampNou after Sinama Pongolle ahead.

However, Bojan Krkic leveled five minutes later and Eidur Gudjohnsen put Barcelona ahead 15 minutes from time to confirm the 2- 1 final score.

MADRID, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A second half goal from Stuttgart midfielder Zdravko Kumanovich denied Sevilla a home win, but couldn't stop the Spanish side from qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The goal was a fair reward for the German side, that had lost 3- 1 at home to Sevilla a fortnight ago, but which was able to react with a spirited second half after being under pressure in the first period.

While Sevilla is assured of going into the next phase Stuttgart will battle it out against Rumanian Champions Unirea Urzcieni to accompany. With his side virtually assured a place in the last 16 before kick off, Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez decided to rest striker Freddy Kanoute and Brazilian utility player Adriano.

Arouna Kone was a surprise starter in Manolo Jimenez's side.

The home time took around 10 minutes to take control of the game against a rival that is struggling in jewelry-0-9 its domestic competition.

Luis Fabiano almost got through on goal after five minutes, but it was not until the 12th minute of the game that Sevilla opened the scoring.

Winger Jesus Navas, who has been in fine form all season. received a pass from Fabiano before beating Jens Lehmann with a subtle finish.

The only setback for the home side was a rib injury suffered by Kone, who was replaced by Alvaro Negredo 10 minutes before halftime.

The big forward had only been on the pitch for two minutes before he had a scoring chance, however he was unable to beat Lehmann.

That proved to be a costly miss as Stuttgart looked a vastly improved side in the second half and created three good chances. However, Sevilla was unlucky to find itself down to 10 men after substitute Aldo Duscher pulled a hamstring, before Kumanovich's equalizing goal: a powerful 20 meter shot which came after a fluid team move.

Sevilla looked tired and had to thank goalkeeper Javi Vargas for several fine saves after the break.

MADRID, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez was cautious ahead of his side's Copa del Rey semifinal at home to Getafe.

Sevilla entertains Getafe in the first leg of the first of the semifinals to be played in Spain and Jimenez wants to avoid last years' disappointment.

His side was favorite to book a final place alongside FC Barcelona, but despite winning the first leg of its semifinal 2-1 against Athletic Club Bilbao, was swept aside 3-0 by the Basques in the second leg.

However, Jimenez is taking nothing for granted against a side that has reached two cup finals in the past three seasons and which is currently seventh in the BBVA Primera Liga.

Meanwhile Getafe coach Michel has already said that he considers Atletico Madrid to be favorite to lift the cup.

Jan Kieniewicz, the editor and contributor to this volume, and a stellar team of his fellow scholars from Polish, French, and Russian universities and academies of science and the American Council of Learned Societies take part in a fascinating, complex interdisciplinary project. They observed that, despite our knowledge about expansion of European empires in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, researchers had, up to the early years of this decade, not attempted to apply the paradigm of colonialism to those central and eastern European areas into which Russia and Germany had expanded. Instead, they applied it only to far-flung, non-European areas of the globe. What effect did the colonial power and its educational system have on these subjugated peoples? Did they suffer civilizational oppression from an alien Other that challenged their culture and value system? Kieniewicz and his colleagues set out to answer these and many other questions.

They assumed the existence of spontaneously formed intelligentsias (Polish and others), each with a self-appointed mission to identify and articulate the national identity and to speak to the foreign colonial authorities on behalf of their own people, victims of political aggression, in order to lead them in the modernization and transformation of their society. Thus emerged the present project, "Silent Intelligentsia. A Study of Civilizational Oppression" in 2004-2005 out of debates during a seminar at the Center for Studies on the Classical Tradition in Poland and East Central Europe at the University of Warsaw. During the following three years, the contributors individually sought to answer questions or test hypotheses on numerous facets of the larger project. They returned to a follow-up conference in 2007 with some answers as well as some new questions. The present volume reports on their experiences and conclusions.

Contributors, themselves active researchers in postcolonial studies in non-European areas of the world, apply their expertise in the present volume to throw light on the central and eastern watches o European, particularly the Polish, experience. For example, they wanted to know how the intelligentsia's mission was affected when the only education open to them was delivered in the foreign language and literary tradition of the occupier, as it had been in the Russian-controlled Kingdom of Poland in the nineteenth century. Was this analogous to the Indian experience under the Raj? Of all the fragments that had once made up the lands of the Rzeczpospolita, it was here that the intelligentsia had the greatest opportunity to define the Polish national identity and contribute to the modernization of its society. Their analysis is not entirely confined to the Polish lands of the Russian partition. Brief but informative descriptions are given of the political violence and civilizational oppression suffered in the lands of the Prussian partition that kept the Polish intelligentsia outside the power structure. On the other hand, Austrian Galicia is portrayed as having a relatively free Polish intelligentsia under no civilizational threat and enjoying opportunities unheard of in the other partitions. It was, however, an extremely conservative stratum that allied itself with the traditional, rather than modernizing, influences in the periphery of the Habsburg Empire.

KNOXVILLE -- Outclassed in nearly every way, the team with about 60 healthy, eligible players -- including its redshirt candidates -- mustered up one big play in overtime to win a college football game it had practically no business winning.

Tennessee, typically a Southeastern Conference power, needed equal parts grit and luck to overcome UAB, a middle-of-the-road team from the middle-of-the-road Conference USA.

Matt Simms' 25-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore lifted the Volunteers to a 32-29 double-overtime win over the Blazers, who lost despite nearly doubling the home team in offensive yards.

"It's hard to play any worse than we played," UT coach Derek Dooley said after the game. "But the one thing I gave [players] credit for, they just went out there and kept swinging. They didn't get fazed. At some point, I'm sitting there wondering why they're not fazed. ... But they kept playing, like it wasn't even happening -- which is good. That's what ultimately won us the game.

"We had a lot of luck. Their kicker really helped us. How many did he miss?"

UAB sophomore Josh Zahn missed all five of his field-goal tries in regulation time -- from 41, 35, 49, 30 and 54 yards -- before connecting twice from short range in overtime. But the Blazers needed a touchdown at that point, and the offense that outgained UT 544-287 in yards couldn't cross the Breitling Watches goal line in extra time.

The teams swapped field goals in the first overtime -- Daniel Lincoln connected from 40 yards before Zahn responded from 35 -- and Zahn hit again from 21 yards in the second extra period to give the Blazers their first lead of the day.

"We're mighty disappointed," UAB coach Neil Callaway said. "It was obvious that our kids fought hard, played hard. It was also obvious that we self-destructed in several areas that cost us the ballgame, and that's nobody's fault but our own."

Callaway clarified those areas.

"Field goals, and we gave up a touchdown on a blown coverage," he said.

It's debatable whether UAB actually blew a coverage on the game's final play. Two Blazers were near Moore in the back of the end zone, but he ran under a well-placed toss from a pressured Simms and corralled it for the win.

"[Moore] was my first read on the play," Simms said. "I came off the play-action, the safety flat-footed there for a split-second, and that was all the time I needed to make my decision.

"I just tried to put it in a place where he could go up and get it and jump over the corner[back], and that's exactly what he did."

Moore's teammates carried him nearly 30 yards toward midfield in a wild celebration that would have seemed more fitting if the C-USA team had won.

"Man, it's just an awesome feeling," Moore said. "It's just something that as a little kid, it's in your dreams, and I was just blessed to be in that situation."

Every Vol was blessed to be in that situation. The Vols' offense gained 56 yards in the second half and earned first downs just twice in 15 third-down tries all afternoon.

UAB, meanwhile, went a combined 11-for-25 on third- and fourth-down conversion tries and made two two-point conversions while overcoming a 16-point halftime deficit.

Meath are supposedly one of football's least popular teams, but booing has never been popular in Gaelic games. The rapid nature of hurling and football make jeering Rolex difficult but this is not a problem in soccer, where the pace of the game is slower and the easily-offended have time to make voluble their difficulties with a given player. Meath have been helped by the CCCC's scheduling, too. Were they sharing a bill with Dublin, then the most outlandish supporters in the land would certainly make a decent stab at bringing booing into football. But Meath will have no need of the ear plugs. They are not the country's most popular team, but what's new there? Same reputation, different reason.

Luck o the Irish missing in Neil Jordan's messy Ondine'

Fairy tales, kidney failure, sexy underwear, ominous organ music, the misty Irish coast, drugs - mix them all together and what do you get? Ondine, an abject mess of a movie, oddly featuring several big names: its writer/director is Neil Jordan (Michael Collins, The Crying Game, etc etc), and it stars Colin Farrell (In Bruges) and Stephen Rea ( The Crying Game).

Colin Farrell plays Syracuse, a divorced fisherman and father of Annie (Alison Barry), whose kidney disease keeps her mostly in a wheelchair. Alison Barry is one cute kid, but she's given annoyingly wise lines and recites them like a homework assignment. Maybe she'll become a good actress in time, but she has Brand Cap a ways to go.

Out fishing on his Kid Clothing boat one day, Syracuse hauls up a beautiful woman (Polish actress Alicja Bachleda) in his net. After throwing up all the sea water she's swallowed, the woman says her name is Ondine, as in the mythological water sprite, inspiration for ballets, operas, statues and the like. With her eerie singing, Ondine brings Syracuse luck, as he catches load after enormous load offish and lobster.

Afraid to be taken to a hospital or be seen by anyone but her rescuer, Ondine takes refuge in Syracuse's late mother's remote cottage, where she's eventually spotted by Annie, who has acquired a motorized wheelchair and become mobile. Annie theorizes that Ondine is a selkie, a mythical half-seal/half-human being. Maybe she is. Or not.

Like a boat taking on water, the story becomes awash in ever more plot lines, what with Syracuse's boozy ex and her equally unstable boyfriend, Syracuse's relationship with the parish priest (Stephen Rea), the appearance of a mysterious dark stranger and a fatal accident. Looking at the lovely Irish settings would have provided some consolation - except that the film seems to have been shot through a murky blue filter.

It's possible that filmmaker Neil Jordan had his heart in this project, but how to explain the participation of first-rate actors such as Farrell and Rea? Maybe we can blame economic necessity: Ireland, flush in the oil boom not long ago, appears to have hit the economic skids, like Greece, Portugal, Spain...

I know; I met one on Tuesday as I was coming out of the doctor's office, sporting an unexpected cast up to my knee walking awkwardly toward the door, holding a shoe in my left hand. I passed by the cute little boy who said, "Let me open the door for you. Wait, I will open the second one, too."

He then went on to ask me if he could walk me to my Frank Muller car.

Needless to say, by this time, I was close to tears.

I thanked him and told him that he was a sweetheart.

I was very confused about walking with this new contraption, therefore, I forgot to ask him his name.

Child, whoever you are, you give me hope for the future.
