Review: Firing of ex-LAPD cop Dorner jus

LOS ANGELES (AP) An internal review by the Los Angeles Police Department has concluded that rogue ex-cop Christopher Dorner was justifiably fired.

Civil rights attorney Connie Rice reviewed the lengthy examination and says it concludes Dorner's allegations of racism and bias were unfounded.

The LAPD won't comment until the findings' expected public release by the city Police Commission this month.

Chief Charlie Beck ordered the review in February while Dorner was on the run. The former officer had posted an online manifesto vowing warfare against the department, officers and their families, in retaliation for what he called his unfair firing in 2008.

Authorities say Dorner killed four people, including two law enforcement officers, during a rampage that ended with his death from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot in a burning cabin.

http://fuecagiv.bravesites.com/entries/general/your-blues-aint-like-mine-read-online
http://celiaaau.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/06/02/Download-Secret-Past-%28A-Yellow-Creek-Novel%29
https://groups.diigo.com/group/ethanduny/content/infrastructure-construction-in-egypt-market-databook-to-2014-read-online-9757451
http://nvubepav.blogdetik.com/download-the-button-box-a-daughters-loving-memoir-of-mrs-george-s-patton-book/
http://judsonquta.skyrock.com/3166117242-Downloads-Music-at-Your-Fingertips-Aspects-of-Pianoforte-Technique.html
http://budruzzym.altervista.org/pecos-bill-the-greatest-cowboy-of-all-time-ebook/
http://kathiehcdr.inube.com/blog/3564482/downloads-the-classroom-pet-first-grade-friends-e-book/
http://rufusaraity.webs.com/apps/blog/show/27287205
http://duaaena.altervista.org/gametogenesis-in-the-non-native-green-mussel-perna-viridis-and-the-native-scorched-mussel-brachidontes-exustus-in-tampa-bay-florida-an-article-from-journal-of-shellfish-research-online/
http://venettauhikoe.inube.com/blog/3564483/manifesting-change-it-couldn-t-be-easier-hardcover-ebook/
http://sokqcpcvh.blogdetik.com/download-the-risk-of-education-discovering-our-ultimate-destiny-book/
http://en.netlog.com/brittanieschrader/blog/blogid=24498529
http://doreennqad.skyrock.com/3166117368-Biocides-in-Plastics-Rapra-Review-Report-180-Rapra-Review-Reports.html
http://vpibeemdao.blogdetik.com/case-files-family-medicine-lange-case-files/
http://georginabcdnus.webs.com/apps/blog/show/27287230
http://faustoqpaor.webs.com/apps/blog/show/27287246

FDA rejects two Gilead HIV drugs as stan

By Toni Clarke

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Gilead Sciences Inc said on Monday that U.S. health rejected two of its HIV drugs as standalone therapies, citing deficiencies in documentation and validation of certain quality testing procedures.

Gilead said it is working with U.S. Food and Drug Administration to address the questions raised in the rejection letter in order to prove the application forward.

The company is seeking approval for its drug elvitegravir for people with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, who have already been treated with other products. The drug blocks the enzyme integrase which is needed for the HIV virus to replicate.

Gilead is also seeking approval of cobicistat, a drug that does not itself fight the virus but boosts the function of other HIV medicines.

Both drugs are already contained in Gilead's once-daily single-tablet HIV treatment Stribild, which combines four different medications and was approved in the United States last August.

Analysts on average expect elvitegravir, if eventually approved, to generate annual sales of about $300 million by 2016 according to Thomson Reuters data. They expect sales of cobicistat of roughly $242 million over the same period.

Overall, Gilead's portfolio of antiviral drugs generated sales in 2012 of $8.14 billion.

HIV treatment typically involves the use of multiple drugs designed to attack the virus from different angles. Gilead licensed elvitegravir from Japan Tobacco Inc in 2005 and has the right to market it anywhere except Japan.

Elvitegravir works in a similar manner to Merck & Co's drug Isentress, also known as raltegravir. Isentress is typically given twice a day. Elvitegravir only needs to be taken once a day, but it's action needs to be boosted by cobicistat or an alternative drug that delays the metabolism of elvitegravir.

Gilead has given a number of Indian generic drugmakers, including Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd rights to make generic versions of elvitegravir and other HIV drugs to be sold in developing countries.

(Reporting By Toni Clarke in Washington; editing by Sofina Mirza-Reid)

http://erinneye.skyrock.com/3163971122-Making-Tracks-Unique-Recording-Studio-Environments-downloads.html
http://garryvbak.inube.com/blog/3490993/downloads-postmortem-kay-scarpetta-book-1-book/
http://oficoebqd.metroblog.com/hughes,_mansel_webster_s_benign_disorders_and_diseases_of_the_breast_download
http://en.netlog.com/ermabaumeister/blog/blogid=23985809
http://blogs.rediff.com/jonasbqd/2013/05/24/multi-agent-rationality-8th-european-workshop-on-modelling-autonomous-agents-in-a-multi-agent-world-maamaw97-ronneby-sweden-may-13-16-1997-proceedings-download/
http://iuhoodol.altervista.org/bad-feelings-e-book/
https://groups.diigo.com/group/ottofice/content/green-lantern-corps-2011-12-download-9651160
http://niyauaua.metroblog.com/downloads_the_2009_2014_outlook_for_water_ices_containing_no_real_fruit_or_fruit_juice_in_the_united_states
http://kuupejiq.livejournal.com/3900.html
http://orhdibbq.blogdetik.com/dvd-on-demand-a-customflix%c2%ae-guide-to-profitably-distributing-your-film-with-inventory-free-fulfillment-ebook/
http://bartyco.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/05/24/Wood-County-%28WV%29-%28Images-of-America%29-ebook
http://qoipuloy.livejournal.com/3892.html
http://ebypury.altervista.org/ramona-forever-ramona-quimby-book/

Tennis-Iron man Robredo completes third

(Writes through, adds quotes)

By Martyn Herman

PARIS, June 2 (Reuters) - Once is commendable, twice is extraordinary but winning from a two set-deficit for the third round in succession at a grand slam tournament like claycourt warrior Tommy Robredo did at the French Open on Sunday stretches the boundaries of credibility.

Especially considering last year the Spaniard could hardly run, needed leg surgery and had fallen to 471 in the rankings.

The 31-year-old looked down and out when he trailed fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro by two sets and 4-1 in the third but produced another Houdini-esque escape and fought back to claim an emotional 6-7(5) 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory.

After a shattered Almagro dumped a backhand volley into the net, Robredo collapsed to the court and could not stop the tears flowing as the enormity of his feat sunk in.

In the second round Robredo gave Dutchman Igor Sijsling a two-set lead and he was at it again against Frenchman Gael Monfils in round three, storming back to win in five after saving four match points.

On Sunday it was 11th seed Almagro's turn to suffer at the hands of the comeback king as Robredo became the first player to overturn three successive two-set deficits since Frenchman Henri Cochet showed a fondness for lost causes at Wimbledon in 1927.

"It's funny, because the last three, four years I couldn't even run that much," Robredo, who needed surgery to repair his continually-tearing left hamstring last year, told reporters.

"And I love to run.

"Before the match I was tired, I was in pain everywhere and I was hoping to try and win the first set because if not I knew it was going to be tough for me," he added.

"But I lost the first, I lost the second, and I had pain in my arm and couldn't even hold the racket a couple of games.

"Then suddenly I recovered. He was 4-1-up (in the third). Maybe he had a little bit of doubt at that moment. Then I just pushed hard and I won the third. Then I was just dreaming and dreaming to try to do it again, and I did it."

BIG HOLE

Former world number five Robredo, who faces another formidable Spaniard next in the form of fourth seed David Ferrer, said he "couldn't care less" about emulating Cochet but was emotional because of his recent injury woes.

"I'm not thinking about history," he said.

"I have been crying a lot lately. Today my emotions were so strong they were overpowering.

"To come up against Nico and turn it around, that was incredible. I'm so happy."

Once Almagro edged the first set he looked like overpowering the rather old-fashioned-looking Robredo with his punishing groundstrokes. He had only dropped one set against Robredo in five meetings and he was in total control.

He was wrong. Robredo loves nothing more than digging a hole and then clambering out.

From 4-1 down in the third set Robredo's classical single-handed backhand began to click and he started taking risks, taking the fight to his opponent.

Suddenly it was Almagro who was being stretched in the baseline rallies and the momentum swung.

Having levelled the match at two sets all, Robredo fell a break behind in the decider but produced one final burst to seal another improbable victory.

"It's still difficult for me to come up with an explanation what happened," Almagro said. "I think Tommy produced a remarkable, admirable game."

Ferrer said he had no doubt he was in for a fight when the pair meet in the next round.

"Tommy is back," Ferrer, who has surpassed Robredo in Spain's claycourt pecking order, said. "He had a difficult year. It was difficult for him to gather his strengths together again but he's done that. And he's one of the best players on clay."

Robredo's comeback also caught the eye of Roger Federer.

"I know how it is to come back from two sets to love, and that is a big deal," the Swiss second seed said after his fourth-round victory over Gilles Simon.

"So the combo of him doing that three times consecutively at probably his most favourite tournament in the world, yeah it's an amazing achievement. I couldn't be happier for the guy."
Arianna Huffington: Rep. Bachmann was a

Arianna Huffington

Below you can find some of the notable comments made Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Our powerhouse roundtable guests included former deputy chief of staff and senior adviser to President George W. Bush Karl Rove, Bloomberg TV contributor and former Obama White House senior adviser David Plouffe, editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post Media Group Arianna Huffington, PBS' "Washington Week" moderator and managing editor Gwen Ifill, Wall Street Journal editorial page editor Paul Gigot, ABC News global affairs anchor Christiane Amanpour, TIME International editor Bobby Ghosh and vice president of new initiatives at the Woodrow Wilson CenterAaron David Miller.

Huffington says Rep. Bachmann, a 'colorful distraction,' can continue to 'grandstand' outside of Congress

HUFFINGTON: But what is interesting, is that basically, like Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann was a sort of colorful distraction. She had no legislative record. She didn't really do anything in the House that she cannot do outside the House. A lot of her career was based on grandstanding. So she can continue doing that.

Christiane Amanpour on Syria's Civil War, considers it a 'huge humanitarian catastrophe'

AMANPOUR: A year ago, President Clinton, former President Clinton, a year ago, when there were 10,000 dead in Syria, said that the longer we leave this, the worse it will be and the more bad actors will come in.

Now, 80,000 people dead. In one year that's 70,000 people who've been killed. There is a huge humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Syria beyond our eyes, because we can see it. And this is what is happening right now. And the bad actors are in there, both on the rebels' side and Assad's side, Hezbollah and Iran.

Huffington outraged by 'gulag' like system of detention and deportation

HUFFINGTON: But also we need some accountability, David, because right now, this goes right against what the - what the president professes to believe in, that detention and deportation system, it is an absolute nightmare for families. It's a bit like a gulag.

Gigot finds the link between IRS and Holder scandals, it's 'coercive power of the state'

GIGOT: The common theme here - the common theme here between the IRS scandals and the Holder problems is the coercive power of the state. That is - the president has been trying to redefine government in a benign way, expanded it and say, you know what, it's really good for you.
Couple Finds Recipe For A Lasting And Lo

DEAR ABBY: My husband came up to me after dinner, wrapped his arms around me and asked, "Honey, is there anything we need to discuss?" In his hand he held an envelope on which I had written your name and address. When I told him it was a request for a copy of your cookbooklet -- not a request for marriage counseling -- he was relieved. We have been "cooking up" a wonderful life together for 10 years.

Somehow I managed to misplace your cookbooklet. I have read that there is now a set of two of them. Would you please give me the ordering instructions? Thanks, Abby! -- JEAN IN RICHLAND, WASH.

DEAR JEAN: I get a lot of letters like yours and I'm glad to oblige. Once you start looking at "Cookbooklet II" you will see that a sweet tooth runs in my family. Many readers have told me the dessert recipes in my cookbooklets are great for entertaining, and actually save calories because they are divided among a greater number of people. The raw apple cake with caramel glaze serves 16! My booklets are sold as a set and can be ordered by sending your name and address, plus check or money order for $14 (U.S. funds) to: Dear Abby -- Cookbooklet Set, P.O. Box 447, Mount Morris, IL 61054-0447. Shipping and handling are included in the price. Remember, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," and this recipe requires five or six of them. (Think of the fiber!)

My cookbooklet set contains more than 100 tasty recipes for soups, salads, appetizers, main courses and desserts that can be used when friends and families get together to celebrate holidays and special occasions.

I have been told by some readers that they have been used as the basis for Dear Abby-themed dinner parties. (The place cards were decorated with hearts and flowers, and the centerpiece was a "bouquet" of envelopes addressed to me.)

P.S. Your husband sounds like a sweetheart. My mother once said the secret to a lasting marriage is a husband who lasts, so feed him well and he will.

DEAR ABBY: I work in a skilled-care facility. I am also preparing for law school. Today one of my co-workers humiliated me in the presence of others by asking if I have been gaining weight. I giggled and said, "Probably."

She proceeded to say that I have gained "a lot" of weight in my "fat face" and told me to get on the scale so she could see how much. I told her it's none of her business.

She has done this to me and other co-workers before. Our supervisor likes her and doesn't reprimand her. How should I handle this? -- GETTING IMPATIENT IN ILLINOIS

DEAR GETTING IMPATIENT: Handle it by ignoring this unpleasant person and avoiding her whenever possible. So should any other co-worker she has offended. Any time she attempts to embarrass any of you, it should be reported to your supervisor's supervisor -- individually or en masse -- because the failure to act on your concerns is allowing a hostile work environment to exist.

Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Write Dear Abby ator P.O.
Israel to build 300 units in Jewish sett

JERUSALEM (AP) Israel's Housing Ministry said Thursday it has given the final go-ahead for the construction of 300 new homes in a Jewish settlement in east Jerusalem, complicating the mission of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to renew Mideast peace talks.

The announcement came less than a week after Kerry urged Israel to avoid "provocative" actions during a visit to the region. A U.S. State Department spokeswoman described the move as "counterproductive."

Palestinian officials immediately accused Israel of undermining the U.S. mediation efforts.

The issue of Jewish settlements has been at the heart of a nearly five-year impasse in peace efforts. Negotiations broke down in late 2008 and have remained stalled since then.

The Palestinians say they will not return to negotiations until Israel stops building settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, areas they claim for a future state. Israel, which captured both areas in the 1967 Mideast war, says talks should resume without any conditions.

Israel has tried to differentiate between settlements in the West Bank, which is not part of Israel, and east Jerusalem, which it annexed and claims as part of its capital. But the international community, including the U.S., does not recognize the annexation and considers both territories to be occupied.

Housing Ministry spokesman Ariel Rosenberg said the latest construction, in the Ramot area of east Jerusalem, was approved by the government long ago but in recent days, the ministry accepted a bid by a company to build the 300 housing units. He said the ministry had solicited the bids last year. Construction is expected to begin within a few months.

Ramot is a sprawling development that lies mostly in territory Israel seized in 1967. Israel considers it a neighborhood of its capital.

More than 500,000 Israelis now live in settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The Palestinians say continued construction is a sign of bad faith and makes it increasingly difficult to partition the land between Israel and a future Palestinian state.

Palestinian official Saeb Erekat described the construction plans as "systematic destruction" of Kerry's efforts by Israeli hardliners. The Housing Ministry is headed by the "Jewish Home," a hardline party with close ties to the Jewish settler movement.

"They are settlers, working for settlers," Erekat said.

Government spokesman Ofir Gendelman accused Palestinians of making excuses to avoid peace talks.

"It is a tactic to avoid negotiations," Gendelman said. "We are calling on Palestinians to return to direct negotiations immediately in order to discuss all outstanding issues," he said.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki chided Israel for the move.

"Israelis must recognize that continued construction in East Jerusalem is counterproductive to the cause of peace and that an independent Palestine must be viable, with real borders that have to be drawn," she said.

"We're at a pivotal time," Psaki told reporters. "We need to focus on each side making tough choices in order to move a process or the possibility of negotiations forward. And that's what our focus is on."

Aides to the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas say Kerry hopes to present a formal plan to resume long-stalled negotiations in coming weeks.

During his visit last week, Kerry said it was impossible to expect Israel to halt all settlement construction. But he urged restraint and called on both sides to avoid any moves that could undermine his efforts.

Since taking office early this year, Kerry has devoted significant efforts to restarting peace talks. He has visited the region four times, most recently last week, in search of a formula acceptable to both sides.

Abbas' aides said the president was under pressure to accept some construction in Jewish settlements in blocs, particularly in those expected to lie on the Israeli side of a future border.

___

Associated Press writer Bradley Klapper in Washington contributed to this report.

http://aeburooi.altervista.org/discourses-delivered-in-the-college-of-new-jersey-addressed-chiefly-to-candidates-for-the-first-degree-in-the-arts-downloads/
http://isabellercic.orbs.com/
http://giedora.jimdo.com/2013/05/23/downloads-antecedents-and-consequences-of-reactions-to-developmental-360-o-feedback-an-article-from-journal-of-vocational-behavior-e-book/
http://shelliaie.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/05/23/Call-Of-The-White-Wolf-%28Harlequin-Historical%29-downloads
http://xaiyaza.jimdo.com/2013/05/22/fern-michaels-sisterhood-cd-collection-4-fast-track-collateral-damage-final-justice-the-sisterhood-download/
http://en.netlog.com/jeanetteslifer/blog/blogid=23904929
http://xoubobe.bravesites.com/entries/general/street-atlas-of-charlotte-lee-collier-counties-florida-ebook-downloads
http://karmaco.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/05/23/Downloads-Sex-Pistols-book
http://bmfyqadob.altervista.org/organizational-behavior-package-university-of-arizona-read-online/
http://biomervo.info/1/books/Science%20%26%20Its%20Limits:%20The%20Natural%20Sciences%20in%20Christian%20Perspective%20%28Contours%20of%20Christian%20Philosophy%20Contours%20of%20Christian%20Philo%29
http://vicentaypb.orbs.com/recettes+pour+les+enfants+%3A+lecons+de+c
http://baufoipr.blogdetik.com/twelve-dancing-princesses-sewing-regal-costumes-for-18-dolls-downloads/
http://yeovaquc.jimdo.com/2013/05/23/ibm-delivers-storage-in-a-pizza-box-new-hardware-an-article-from-transport-technology-today-jul-30-2005-book/
http://juipizul.jimdo.com/2013/05/22/lon-minis-the-d-vile-legend-of-a-ninja-book-downloads/
http://estellauddqy.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26506301
http://aishabny.orbs.com/unruly+life+of+woody+allen%3A+a+biograp
http://ohmnmiyz.blogdetik.com/red-hot-sales-negotiation-everything-you-need-to-know-to-close-deals-build-relationships-and-create-win-win-outcomes-download/
http://nvuycechod.blogdetik.com/download-frank-moore-cross-conversations-with-a-bible-scholar/
http://biiyinav.jimdo.com/2013/05/23/fundamentals-of-international-business-e-book/

Video Game to Help Kids Fight Cancer

Doctors can't inject cancer patients withprogrammed to launch surgical counterstrikes against the disease. That didn't stop a team of medical researchers and software programmers from developing a video game several years ago that helped young patients imagine such an empowering scenario. Based on the success of that project, the team recently launched a sequel geared for mobile devices that they hope will further encourage kids undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments to better understand what's happening inside their bodies and how they might regain their health.

is a collection of six free online games--accessible via Web browser or Apple iPad--that share the theme of taking the fight to cancer. They do this by arming patients with a virtual arsenal of chemo, radiation and targeted cancer drug attacks designed to crush advancing malignant forces. The game--and its --are the product of HopeLab, a nonprofit founded in 2001 by Pamela Omidyar, wife of eBay founder Pierre Omidyar.

It's hard to deny that a diversion such as "Stem Cell Defender," in which players protect white blood cells from a bacteria invasion by unleashing antibiotic bombs, could do wonders for a child's morale during long waits at a doctor's office or hospital. (Bacterial infections, nausea and constipation are some treatment-related effects patients may experience.) HopeLab, however, insists the games do more even more than this, claiming they improve treatment outcomes by educating young patients about the disease and how it can be fought. Such knowledge makes these patients more likely to adhere closely to their treatment regimens.

HopeLab has backed this claim over the past few years with a number of studies, although the organization is careful not to directly associate game play with actual cancer remission. In the most recent study, HopeLab worked with Stanford University associate professor of psychology and neuroscienceon a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study analyzing brain regions activated when people play the original Re-Mission. The paper, published in the March 2012 , compared brain scans in 57 cancer-free undergraduates who were randomly assigned to . Re-Mission players experienced more activity in neural circuits associated with incentive motivation when compared to those who merely observed game play. Such reward-related activation could shift attitudes and emotions and boost players' adherence to prescribed chemotherapy and antibiotic treatments to fight infection, the researchers said, although they acknowledge that further tests are needed on actual cancer patients before they can read too much into the results.

An earlier study published in the journal Pediatrics in August 2008sought to determine whether video games could encourage adolescent and young-adult cancer patients to more consistently take self-administered treatments such as oral chemotherapy, a particularly difficult problem in that age group. The study--which included 374 adolescents and young adults with malignancies including acute leukemia, lymphoma, and soft-tissue sarcoma--found that those who played Re-Mission took their medication more consistently, increased their knowledge of the disease and generally played a more active role in their treatment . Although that study was led by principal investigator and former HopeLab president and CEO , it also included researchers from West Virginia University and the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Re-Mission 2 caters to kids who have grown up playing Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and other games on the Internet or via apps on their mobile devices. In fact, the sequel can be played only online or on the iPad. HopeLab is working on versions that will work on Android devices. This is a calculated switch from the format of the original version of Re-Mission, which took players on a quest heavily influenced by popular video games at the time, most notably Tomb Raider. Instead of Lara Croft, Re-Mission featured a microscopic robot named Roxxi, clad in form-fitting silver body armor, who traveled through the bodies of fictional cancer patients, blasting cancer cells and battling the side-effects of cancer and its treatments.

The Re-Mission re-boot is a welcome change, says Brooke Jaffe, a 21-year-old junior at Barnard College in New York City. Quest games like Tomb Raider that are played on PCs and video game consoles like Xbox or the Wii can be intimidating to people who don't already play them, adds Jaffe, an English major who became aware of HopeLab's work after she was successfully treated for papillary carcinoma--thyroid cancer--in 2011.

Re-Mission 2 is a much more casual approach to gaming. It may not have the complicated 3-D graphics and the emphasis on anatomical realism of its predecessor, but it's certainly more accessible to a kid waiting to undergo treatment, or who is fatigued from having just undergone treatment, says Jaffe, one of 120 teens and young adults HopeLab recruited to help develop and evaluate Re-Mission 2. The idea is that patients will get a lot more enjoyment from playing 10 minutes of one of Re-Mission 2's simpler games than they would from 10 minutes of the original version, which might require 30 minutes of play to get past the first level.

Images courtesy of HopeLab

Followon Twitterand .

Visitfor the latest in science, health and technology news.

 2013 .
What If There Is No Happy Ending? Scienc

On 30 May COMPASS published ain PLOS Biology on the journey from science outreach to meaningful engagement. This post is part of a series of reactions, reflections, and personal experiences from scientists involved in such work. Read the , orby searching for #reachingoutsci.

========

"Fortuna, Panama. Friday 10 January 1997 - We ran a transect on Quebrada Chorro and netted a bunch of tadpoles. The surprising thing was that we heard no Colostethus calling, although the habitat looks excellent, and saw no frogs. Next we ran a transect on Quebrada Arena and found a bunch more dead frogs (27 total now), but also a bunch of live ones. We even found two dying Rana tadpoles, one with a bloody lesion. It looks really bad for Fortuna."

That's my journal entry, from a trip to western Panama that was about to change our understanding of what we had been calling the Amphibian Population Decline Phenomenon. Four years earlier as a PhD student working in southern Costa Rica I had been surprised upon returning from my Christmas break by a sudden and mysterious disappearance of my study species and most of the other amphibians at the site. That had prompted me to move to Fortuna, a nearby site and set up new studies. The difference was that this time I had caught the epidemic, and was watching the frogs die before my very eyes. Dr. David Green, a vet pathologist at the USGS National Wildlife Health Center, would conclude that they all had a skin infection that we'd later learn was an aquatic fungus. Worse, it looked exactly like the skin infection killing frogs in Australia, and at the National Zoo. We had a global epidemic on our hands.

Over the next 12 years, I watched as entire communities of amphibians - hundreds of animals and over 100 species of frogs and salamanders - succumbed to chytridiomycosis, the fungal disease caused by that fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd for short). It was stunningly fast. Entire valleys would be wiped out in a few months. It was devastating. We worked furiouslyandwhat was happening, driven to tell the world about what we were seeing. We cranked out definitive papers. More importantly, though, I felt personally responsible doing something.

For me, that 'something' was going to take skills you just don't learn in the lab or the field, so I applied for communication and leadership training through the . I wanted to learn how to better communicate lessons learned from the amphibian extinction I had observed in the hopes of alerting others and preventing new extinctions. I put my freshly honed communication skills to work, describing what we had seen in the field, and the impacts of those declines on populations, communities, and ecosystems. I gave lots of talks to many kinds of groups - colleagues, hobbyists, zookeepers. I always hoped that somebody in the audience would have the right bit of information to understand where this fungus came from, how it worked, and how we might control it.

Those early years were a whirlwind, but it felt good to know that by reporting on the losses I was helping conservation groups focus attention on the problem, I was raising awareness among scientists and citizens alike, and that organizations used this information to charge task forces, organize funding opportunities, distribute newsletters, and initiate global analyses.

As the years passed, we learned more about the global distribution of the Bd fungus and the wide range of amphibians affected and in decline. The message changed from one of prevention to one of , then of searching for ways to genetically modify the fungus . There was still a lot we did not know, but as new genetic tools and analyses came online it seemed like we were making progress.

However, within the past few years we've come to several grim realizations: we can't eradicate the fungus from the environment, most of the tropical jungle areas of the world are already infected, and human trade has helped move this pathogen around the world. So, again, I changed my message to how we might control invasive species and focused on lessons from successful eradication of wildlife diseases. And again, my target audience expanded to include agencies and NGOs with the hope that they might be able to monitor diseases internationally or regulate trade to prevent introductions of infected frogs.

Still, despite all our best efforts, it's a Bd world now. Over the years, I have been moving my research sites eastward, racing to stay ahead of the epidemic wave as it burns through Panama, but now, I am out of sites and out of frogs. The kinds of questions we need to ask and the kinds of research we do are different. We are working at the Colombian border where Bd has already passed through and done its damage. We are now looking for evidence that survivors are evolving genetic resistance to disease. We still don't know where it came from, how it gets around, or how to get rid of it. Worst of all, we don't have any proven way to keep it out.

There aren't many places left on the planet where Bd doesn't yet occur. I dread the day when I hear that an infected frog has been found on Madagascar or Papua New Guinea where amphibians are still healthy. That will be a very sad day, because in the early days I never doubted that we'd figure out how to stop Bd; now I am sure we won't.

It's hard to believe that in just 15 years, I've watched dozens of species go extinct. It's harder still to accept that despite our best intentions, tireless efforts, and expensive investments, we haven't been able to save a single species. Not one. Not really. Sure, some species of frogs are safely housed in aquariums in zoos, but as long as we have no answer for addressing Bd where it persists in the environment, successful reintroductions and long-term solutions don't seem likely. And I feel terrible. I feel like a fraud, and I feel responsible, as if being an expert on a topic means I am expected to solve the problem.

And the problem is bigger than just Bd. The full extent of the Global Extinction of Amphibians is now , and it seems that we have not been able to apply any of those lessons to the most recent fungal epidemic . The number of regional or global threats to biodiversity are increasing so rapidly that it is difficult to understand which factor or factors is involved, much less how to address them. I feel helpless, and useless, and wonder if it is time for a new conversation, one that reconsiders how we decide, prioritize, and even practice conservation measures.

We are living in an era called the . It is characterized by unprecedented amounts of change in our physical and natural systems but also in our human institutions. We will see many more changes, and many species and many habitats will continue to disappear or become unrecognizable. We think we have the knowledge and techniques to , and we have been successful at restoring some degraded habits. What we don't have are sufficient resources to individually repair and restore the rapidly increasing numbers of threatened species and habitats. The global economy has shifted, and we are still dealing with the rippling repercussions it has on funding to agencies, universities and individuals for research and conservation. Living in DC, I see firsthand the effects as numerous job cuts in conservation NGOs and federal agencies, and as shifts in priorities as donors of all sorts move away from biodiversity.

It's profoundly frustrating to have a platform and a voice, but not to have a clear call to action for the public. A common theme in science communication is that we have to the audience care. And people do care - a lot! They are eager to help, to offer suggestions, to get involved. But at the end of my talks there is no magic bullet. The truths I have to offer are not easy, they don't instantly make us feel better. If there is tough love, let's call what I have to offer "hard hope".

We know that humans are the main cause of these global changes, and while that feels overwhelming, it also necessarily means that we have a choice in deciding whether and how control the direction and dimension of these changes. The ability to control our planet brings great responsibility, and makes scientific leadership, communication, and ethical considerations more important than ever. As individuals, communities, and as a society we are going to be asked to make many painful decisions in the coming years. We are going to need creative, informed and well-spoken stakeholders from all areas to participate as we decide what we want to save, and why. Scientists will be necessary to provide information on he structure and functioning of ecosystems and the role of species, but in the end, engaged citizens will the those who decide what species or habitats receive funding or research or rescue.

I am struggling to find a new message, one that moves past the death and destruction I have witnessed and beyond the feelings of helplessness and frustration, but one that is still honest and useful. I have been thinking about change and shifting baselines a lot recently, as I struggle to comprehend as everything - from frogs and fish, to bats, bees and forest trees - decline in number. I remind myself, "Nothing is as constant as change." It's inevitable. This is the most honest and most hopeful thing I can say: evolution happens. Life is resilient.

Where I work in the Appalachians today I am aware of the skeletal remains of American chestnut trees, victims of a past fungal epidemic that forever changed the ecology of this forest. Anybody who has driven through the extensive forest of Shenandoah National Park or Smoky Mountain National Park has seen how a generation of protection can restore the eastern hardwood forest to something that is similar to what was there before. It's not the same, not by a long shot, but maybe one day we will see frogs return to Panama and the .

A special thanks to Liz Neeley for the inspiration to write this and for editing earlier drafts.

Followon Twitterand .

Visitfor the latest in science, health and technology news.

 2013 .
Lamar Alexander Poised to Unveil His Mav

A Republican senator from a deep-red state gives a high-profile speech Wednesday laying out a GOP vision for America's energy futurea blueprint that includes a direct acknowledgment of the problem of global warming caused by carbon pollution and which calls for more, not less, government spending on clean-energy research.

The senator is Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, a moderate with serious energy-policy chops: He is the top Republican on the Senate panel that funds the Energy Department and represents a state that's home to a major Energy Department research lab, Oak Ridge.

The speech, which he'll deliver at the Oak Ridge facility, is in keeping with views Alexander has long espoused. But it's in stark contrast to the energy and climate positions taken by his party's leaders since 2010. After the tea party helped fuel the Republican takeover of the House, denying the science of climate change went from a fringe to a mainstream Republican view, and the House even passed a bill declaring that climate change was a hoax. Super PACs such as Americans for Prosperity, which has ties to the oil conglomerate Koch Industries, targeted Republicans who acknowledged climate change and supported renewable energy. During the 2012 presidential campaign, every Republican candidate but one, Jon Huntsman, questioned or denied the science concluding that carbon pollution causes global warming.

Alexander's speech highlights the widening schism on energy and climate change between moderates like himself and party leaders like Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, often named as a likely 2016 presidential candidate. At a speech in March, Rubio said, "The people who are actually closed-minded in American politics are the people who love to preach about the certainty of science with regards to our climate but ignore the absolute fact that science has proven that life begins at conception." Alexander himself has acknowledged the dividelast year, he stepped down after five years as the chairman of the Republican conference, criticizing the party's increasing ideological partisanship.

Republican strategists say they'll be paying close attention.

"Lamar is a pretty interesting guy. Given his swingy nature, lots of people are going to pay attention to what he is saying," said Mike McKenna, an energy lobbyist and strategist who helped craft House Republicans' energy messaging.

Since 2010, many formerly moderate Republicans have shifted far to the right on energy and climate positions, in part to avoid attacks from groups such as Americans for Prosperity ahead of reelection campaigns. But although Alexander is up for reelection next year, he is not backing down from his long-held energy positions. The former Tennessee governor is not facing a primary challenger and is expected to maintain a comfortable lead over Democratic challenger Larry Crim.

Five years ago, Alexander gave a similar energy speech at Oak Ridge, laying out seven "grand challenges" on energy, including finding ways to promote plug-in electric vehicles, capture and use carbon emissions, help solar become cost-competitive, safely manage nuclear waste, make biofuels competitive with gasoline, make new buildings green buildings, and create energy from fusion. At the time, those goals were well in line with the views of the GOP's presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Alexander's speech will provide a progress report on those goalsand propose a plan for a Republican energy future.

The speech will directly acknowledge climate change and the need to reduce carbon pollution. "While the United States has made more gains in reducing the use of carbon than any other industrial country, the National Academies of the U.S. and 12 other countries have warned that human activity has contributed significantly to climate change and global warming," Alexander will say, according to prepared remarks.

He'll then lay out "four grand principles" to "help the United States end an obsession with taxpayer subsidies and strategies for expensive energy and instead focus on doubling research and allowing marketplace solutions to create an abundance of clean, cheap, reliable energy."

His four principles are: cheaper, not more expensive energy; clean, not just renewable energy; research and development, not government mandates; and a free market, not government, picking winners and losers.

More specifically, he'll praise the U.S. boom in development of natural gas, a source of electricity that produces half the carbon pollution of coal. While he'll acknowledge the role renewable-energy sources such as solar play in the nation's energy mix, he'll also push for development of low-carbon electricity sources such as nuclear and hydropower. He'll praise the work done by the Energy Department lab ARPA-E, which researches high-risk, high-reward breakthrough clean-energy technologiesa move that comes on the heels of a GOP campaign railing against President Obama for the bankruptcy of the solar company Solyndra, which took $500 million in an Energy Department loan guarantee.

In addition, Alexander will call for an end to government subsidies on wind energy, a policy he's long opposed. The proposals hardly line up exactly with President Obama's green agenda, but with their clear focus on low-carbon energy, they are a far cry from the stance of many in the GOP.

"I've been fascinated with the progress we've made on the seven grand challenges I suggested five years ago," Alexander will say. "Perhaps by focusing on these four principles, we can capitalize on this progress toward cheap, clean, reliable energy."

Still, Republicans say that a voice like Alexander's will have serious heft as the GOP reckons with its energy and climate future.

"Lamar is a strong and credible voice for Republicans on energy issues," said Republican strategist Mark McKinnon. "He has standing to make the case."

http://judsonmpa.skyrock.com/3163691542-RF-and-Baseband-Techniques-for-Software-Defined-Radio-online.html
http://myrnabed.orbs.com/first+fruits+of+freedom%3A+the+migrat
http://qmmkoyna.blogdetik.com/download-digital-landscape-photography-step-ebook/
http://misbiaan.blogdetik.com/ben-franklin-printers-boy-the-childhood-of-famous-americans-series-online/
http://bulahad.orbs.com/insurer+loses+in+%27space+alien%27+wc+ca
http://miapunu.jimdo.com/2013/05/22/downloads-closer-to-truth-science-meaning-and-the-future-ebook/
http://virginadibyy.inube.com/blog/3477519/download-the-naked-man-a-study-of-the-male-body/
http://laowone.livejournal.com/3104.html
http://blogs.rediff.com/danelleepzh/2013/05/23/the-2011-report-on-household-water-heaters-excluding-electric-types-world-market-segmentation/
http://haydeneuyofao.inube.com/blog/3477521/downloads-lahun-a-town-in-egypt-1800-bc-and-the-history-of-its-landcape-egyptian-sites-e-book/
http://blogs.rediff.com/seetoeb/2013/05/23/murder-can-rain-on-your-shower-desiree-shapiro-mystery-10-online/
