Next Xbox wont force users to stay onlin

Microsoft Xbox720 Always OnlineGood news forfans:by forcing gamers to have an Internet connection just to play games. Ars Technica has got hold of an internalemail to Xbox engineers outlining a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection and instructing the engineers to make those functions just work regardless of their current connection status. The email goes on to say that the new Xbox should be designed for playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game without an Internet connection. Rumors that Microsoft would require an online connection for single-player games gained fuel recently when formerto deal with it because every device now is always on.

[More from BGR: ]

This article was

http://friendfeed.com/ntkuo/8dc6f934/2011-2016-outlook-for-fire-alarm-panels-in
http://friendfeed.com/mdrzi/b98b45fe/inter-american-development-bank-study-in
http://en.netlog.com/clarkmorell/blog/blogid=23091114
http://erickaiqi.jimdo.com/2013/05/06/downloads-la-hu-sped-hd-29-ebook/
http://twitpic.com/cort62
http://yfieyipu.altervista.org/download-irresistible-embroidered-bags/
http://vufetine.blog-talker.com/The-first-blog-b1/Once-a-Spy-Basic-online-b1-p47.htm
http://friendfeed.com/eezke/e88392eb/avoiding-static-ignition-hazards-in-chemical
http://loreeneqlb.skyrock.com/3160375190-Downloads-Sex-ebook.html
http://twitpic.com/cort67
http://maryanneoerscbm.inube.com/blog/3381094/human-development-2-1-2-to-6-years-cognitive-development-dvd-ebook/
http://belindafana.inube.com/blog/3381095/download-shock-totem-holiday-tales-of-the-macabre-and-twisted-2011-e-book/
http://loreanba.orbs.com/download+word+scrambles+for+kids%3A+st
http://twitpic.com/cort89
http://twitpic.com/cort8f
http://consuelofvrn.jimdo.com/2013/05/06/download-postaudit-of-head-and-transmissivity-estimates-and-ground-water-flow-models-of-avra-valley-arizona-e-book/
http://friendfeed.com/bufmyh/e96fbbd4/download-heroine-of-rescue-incredible-story
http://en.netlog.com/cathiradcliffe/blog/blogid=23091132

PROMISES, PROMISES: When Obama's promise

WASHINGTON (AP) Absent a magic potion or explosive economic growth, it was all but inevitable President Barack Obama would have to break some of his campaign promises to keep others. If there's one thing that distinguished them besides their ambition, it was their incompatibility.

Cut a staggering $4 trillion from deficits while protecting big benefit programs, subsidizing more health care, plowing extra money into education and avoiding tax increases on everyone except the rich? Not on this Earth.

The postelection reality is starting to shake out now, though how it will all settle can't yet be known.

To reach for his promised deficit reduction, Obama has proposed breaking his tax promise. Toward the same end, his pledge from four years earlier that he wouldn't trim cost-of-living benefits in Social Security has given way to a proposal to do just that.

None of that might happen.

Republicans, who oppose tax increases, and Democrats, who object to curbs on entitlements, could block his path and in doing so save Obama from breaking his own promises.

If they do, though, that big pledge to bring down deficits by $4 trillion would surely have no hope at all.

That's the overarching dilemma in a catalog of campaign promises facing varying prospects over the next few years.

Obama is driving toward success on his energy goals. He's got a decent chance of achieving an immigration overhaul. Activists who once ridiculed his promise to be a "fierce advocate" of gay rights say he's come around and become just that.

Much else is bogged in the budget swamp or is a nonstarter for one reason or another. Anything costing big money comes with big obstacles, and one promise that cost relatively little, gun control, is dust. Yet Obama, in powering through with his health care overhaul, financial regulation and stimulus spending in his first term, has shown that tough causes aren't always lost ones.

A look at Obama's leading promises and what's happening with them:

Debt:

The promise: Cut deficits by $4 trillion over a decade.

Prospects: Deals with Congress to cap spending and raise taxes on wealthier people, along with the resulting savings on interest payments on the debt, have already achieved a projected $2.6 trillion in deficit reduction for the years ahead. But the rest of the $4 trillion will be tough. To get there, he proposes a 10-year $583 billion tax increase, an additional layer of tax increases from slower indexing of tax brackets for inflation and modest curbs to federal health care programs, all helping to produce further interest savings.

Republicans are so far standing firm against further tax increases and liberal Democrats are a tough sell on trimming entitlement programs and other spending. This, as the Congressional Budget Office warns that "such high and rising debt would have serious consequences" if unchecked. Among those consequences are reduced national savings and investment, a potential fiscal crisis and higher interest costs for the government.

___

Economy:

The promise: An approach to deficit reduction that doesn't undermine the recovery or unduly burden the middle class. Also, cut some corporate tax rates, penalize those who shift work overseas and create 1 million manufacturing jobs by 2016.

Prospects: Obama has had mixed success cutting the deficit without slowing growth. He struck a deal with Congress to avoid the "fiscal cliff," a set of tax increases and spending cuts in January. Businesses responded by stepping up hiring and spending.

But he and Republican leaders allowed Social Security taxes to rise, cutting take-home pay for nearly all working Americans. He wasn't able to avoid $85 billion in automatic spending cuts that started March 1.

Manufacturing has been creating more jobs but adding 1 million more by 2016 is unlikely. That would require 250,000 new factory jobs per year, nearly double the current pace. Overall, the unemployment rate dropped to 7.5 percent in April, the lowest in four years of recession and ragged recovery. The economy is growing modestly but steadily. It expanded at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the January-March quarter.

___

Education:

The promise: Raise the high school graduation rate from 78 percent to 90 percent by 2020 and make the country No. 1 in college graduates by that year. Cut federal money to colleges that don't control tuition costs.

Prospects: A rocky path at best. There's little momentum in Congress for the spending required, his pledge to make the U.S. first in college graduates is a long shot and tuitions are climbing without the promised federal penalty.

Obama has proposed $36 billion for Pell Grants in 2013. Yet those grants now cover less than one-third of the cost of a four-year public college. In 1980, they covered 69 percent of the costs.

___

Energy:

The promise: Cut oil imports by half by 2020.

Prospects: He could well deliver on this promise. New drilling technologies have unlocked enormous domestic reserves of crude oil and natural gas. Policies that mandate increasing use of renewable fuels and better vehicle fuel economy have helped slash demand. That has translated into a dramatic reduction in oil imports and increase in diesel and gasoline exports.

But oil and gasoline are global commodities. If Mideast turmoil disrupts oil production there, prices worldwide will rise, even if the U.S. gets little or no oil from that region. The U.S. economy won't ever be free from the effect of high oil prices. It just may be able to get much less oil from abroad.

___

Entitlements:

The promise: No cuts in Social Security cost-of-living increases. Protect Medicare from Republican proposals to turn it into a voucher-like program.

Prospects:Obama is ready to break his Social Security pledge from the 2008 campaign. He favors a new measure of inflation that would gradually trim benefit increases in Social Security, Medicare and other programs. The change, if adopted, eventually would cut Social Security benefits $560 a year for an average 75-year-old, $136 for a 65-year-old.

His approach to Medicare savings is different from one proposed by House Republicans to transform the program. He'd cut Medicare payments to service providers and is proposing that a growing share of seniors pay higher premiums over time, based on their incomes. Such Medicare changes were foreseen before the 2012 election. Meantime, Washington is expanding Medicaid to bring in more of the low-income uninsured.

For years, budget hawks have insisted that huge entitlements must be on the table for true fiscal discipline to be achieved. They're on the table now.

___

Gay rights:

The promise: Be a "fierce advocate" for gay rights. Obama endorsed gay marriage in 2012.

?Prospects: The course for gay marriage will be shaped by the Supreme Court, expected to rule on the matter in June. It's allowed in 10 states and the District of Columbia; many other states seem unlikely to follow suit unless forced by Congress or the court. But cultural attitudes are changing, as did Obama's views. His administration argued in favor of gay marriage rights to the court.

It seems unlikely the court will order gay marriage to be legalized in all states but its ruling could help same-sex married couples on estate taxes, Social Security benefits and other tangible matters. In his first term Obama lifted the ban on gays serving openly in the armed forces.

___

Global warming:

The promise: "Continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet."

Prospects: Obama probably will take more steps to reduce the pollution blamed for climate change, but they are unlikely to be of the scale needed to help much in slowing the heating of the planet. Any policy to reduce heat-trapping pollution will target coal burned by power plants and oil refined for automobiles; those industries have powerful protectors in both parties.

Obama has acted on his own, to increase mileage standards and impose pollution control on future power plants. More such executive action is likely; a law is not.

___

Gun control:

The promise: Ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, expand background checks, and more, a postelection pledge made after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Prospects: Obama said he would "put everything I've got into this." His everything wasn't enough. Entrenched support for gun rights and a powerful campaign by the National Rifle Association blocked efforts to pass a single aspect of Obama's package, the first attempt to significantly change the nation's gun laws in over two decades.

Polling found as many as 90 percent of those questioned supported expanded background checks, but even that fell short in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

___

Health care:

The promise: Ensure access to affordable insurance for all and no gutting of Medicare or Medicaid.

Prospects: Obama is likely to achieve his goal of extending coverage to the uninsured. Affordability is another question. Costs are expected to go up, not down, contrary to what Obama promised in his first term.

Some Medicare cuts Obama is willing to enact would hit beneficiaries. Well-to-do seniors and growing numbers of upper middle-class retirees could face higher monthly premiums.

___

Immigration:

The promise: Overhaul the immigration system to provide eventual citizenship to those who came here illegally, tighten borders and smooth legal immigration.

Prospects: Obama failed to deliver on his first-term promise to rework immigration law. His chances of pulling that off are much better now.

Even with a bipartisan Senate group having released legislation to accomplish those goals, however, success is not certain. Even so, the political climate is ripe for change thanks to a shift in Republican attitudes in 2012, when Latino and Asian voters backed Obama in record numbers.?

___

Iran:

The promise: "Do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

Prospects: Sanctions are destroying Iran's economy but not its will to enrich more uranium. By his own timeline, Obama has about a year left to see if diplomacy and sanctions can get Iran to slow its enrichment of uranium and assure the world its nuclear program is peaceful. If the U.S. and its partners cannot succeed, the stage may be set for an American or Israeli military intervention.

___

Taxes:

The promise: Raise taxes on individuals making more than $200,000 and married couples making more than $250,000. No tax increases for people making less. Ensure millionaires pay at least 30 percent of their income in federal taxes.

Prospects: Obama's 2014 budget, if passed, would break his promise to avoid any tax increases for middle and low-income people. He proposes a new inflation yardstick that would expose most people to higher income taxes, especially poorer workers.

He kept his promise to raise taxes on the rich, though at different income levels than he laid out in the campaign: $400,000 for individuals, $450,000 for couples. Republicans dismiss his proposed minimum rate for millionaires as a gimmick.

___

Associated Press writers Dina Cappiello, Philip Elliott, Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, Christopher S.
Germ-zapping 'robots': Hospitals combat

NEW YORK (AP) They sweep. They swab. They sterilize. And still the germs persist.

In U.S. hospitals, an estimated 1 in 20 patients pick up infections they didn't have when they arrived, some caused by dangerous 'superbugs' that are hard to treat.

The rise of these superbugs, along with increased pressure from the government and insurers, is driving hospitals to try all sorts of new approaches to stop their spread:

Machines that resemble "Star Wars" robots and emit ultraviolet light or hydrogen peroxide vapors. Germ-resistant copper bed rails, call buttons and IV poles. Antimicrobial linens, curtains and wall paint.

While these products can help get a room clean, their true impact is still debatable. There is no widely-accepted evidence that these inventions have prevented infections or deaths.

Meanwhile, insurers are pushing hospitals to do a better job and the government's Medicare program has moved to stop paying bills for certain infections caught in the hospital.

"We're seeing a culture change" in hospitals, said Jennie Mayfield, who tracks infections at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Those hospital infections are tied to an estimated 100,000 deaths each year and add as much as $30 billion a year in medical costs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency last month sounded an alarm about a "nightmare bacteria" resistant to one class of antibiotics. That kind is still rare but it showed up last year in at least 200 hospitals.

Hospitals started paying attention to infection control in the late 1880s, when mounting evidence showed unsanitary conditions were hurting patients. Hospital hygiene has been a concern ever since, with a renewed emphasis triggered by the emergence a decade ago of a nasty strain of intestinal bug called Clostridium difficile, or C-diff.

The diarrhea-causing C-diff is now linked to 14,000 U.S. deaths annually. That's been the catalyst for the growing focus on infection control, said Mayfield, who is also president-elect of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.

C-diff is easier to treat than some other hospital superbugs, like methicillin-resistant staph, or MRSA, but it's particularly difficult to clean away. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers don't work and C-diff can persist on hospital room surfaces for days. The CDC recommends hospital staff clean their hands rigorously with soap and water or better yet, wear gloves. And rooms should be cleaned intensively with bleach, the CDC says.

Michael Claes developed a bad case of C-diff while he was a kidney patient last fall at New York City's Lenox Hill Hospital. He and his doctor believe he caught it at the hospital. Claes praised his overall care, but felt the hospital's room cleaning and infection control was less than perfect.

"I would use the word 'perfunctory,'" he said.

Lenox Hill spokeswoman Ann Silverman disputed that characterization, noting hospital workers are making efforts that patients often can't see, like using hand cleansers dispensers in hallways. She ticked off a list of measure used to prevent the spread of germs, ranging from educating patients' family members to isolation and other protective steps with each C-diff patient.

The hospital's C-diff infection rate is lower than the state average, she said.

Westchester Medical Center, a 643-bed hospital in the suburbs of New York City has also been hit by cases of C-diff and the other superbugs.

Complicating matters is the fact that larger proportions of hospital patients today are sicker and more susceptible to the ravages of infections, said Dr. Marisa Montecalvo, a contagious diseases specialist at Westchester.

There's a growing recognition that it's not only surgical knives and operating rooms that need a thorough cleaning but also spots like bed rails and even television remote controls, she said. Now there's more attention to making sure "that all the nooks and crannies are clean, and that it's done in as perfect a manner as can be done," Montecalvo said.

Enter companies like Xenex Healthcare Services, a San Antonio company that makes a portable, $125,000 machine that's rolled into rooms to zap C-diff and other bacteria and viruses dead with ultraviolet light. Xenex has sold or leased devices to more than 100 U.S. hospitals, including Westchester Medical Center.

The market niche is expected to grow from $30 million to $80 million in the next three years, according to Frost & Sullivan, a market research firm.

Mark Stibich, Xenex's chief scientific officer, said client hospitals sometimes call them robots and report improved satisfaction scores from patients who seem impressed that the medical center is trotting out that kind of technology.

At Westchester, workers still clean rooms, but the staff appreciates the high-tech backup, said housekeeping manager Carolyn Bevans.

"We all like it," she said of the Xenex.

At Cooley Dickinson Hospital, a 140-bed facility in Northampton, Mass., the staff calls their machines Thing One, Thing Two, Thing Three and Thing Four, borrowing from the children's book "The Cat in the Hat."

But while the things in the Dr. Seuss tale were house-wrecking imps, Cooley Dickinson officials said the ultraviolet has done a terrific job at cleaning their hospital of the difficult C-diff.

"We did all the recommended things. We used bleach. We monitored the quality of cleaning," but C-diff rates wouldn't budge, said nurse Linda Riley, who's in charge of infection prevention at Cooley Dickinson.

A small observational study at the hospital showed C-diff infection rates fell by half and C-diff deaths fell from 14 to 2 during the last two years, compared to the two years before the machines.

Some experts say there's not enough evidence to show the machines are worth it. No national study has shown that these products have led to reduced deaths or infection rates, noted Dr. L. Clifford McDonald of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

His point: It only takes a minute for a nurse or visitor with dirty hands to walk into a room, touch a vulnerable patient with germy hands, and undo the benefits of a recent space-age cleaning.

"Environments get dirty again," McDonald said, and thorough cleaning with conventional disinfectants ought to do the job.

Beyond products to disinfect a room, there are tools to make sure doctors, nurses and other hospital staff are properly cleaning their hands when they come into a patient's room. Among them are scanners that monitor how many times a health care worker uses a sink or hand sanitizer dispenser.

Still, "technology only takes us so far," said Christian Lillis, who runs a small foundation named after his mother who died from a C-diff infection.

Lillis said the hospitals he is most impressed with include Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, where thorough cleanings are confirmed with spot checks. Fluorescent powder is dabbed around a room before it's cleaned and a special light shows if the powder was removed. That strategy was followed by a 28 percent decline in C-diff, he said.

He also cites Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., where the focus is on elbow grease and bleach wipes. What's different, he said, is the merger of the housekeeping and infection prevention staff. That emphasizes that cleaning is less about being a maid's service than about saving patients from superbugs.

"If your hospital's not clean, you're creating more problems than you're solving," Lillis said.

___

Online:

CDC: http://www.cdc.gov/hai/

http://boemnab.info/1/books/Lonely%20Planet%20Liguria%2c%20Piedmont%20%26%20Valle%20d%27Aosta:%20Chapter%20from%20Italy%20Travel%20Guide
http://tehaslip.manblog.us/The-first-blog-b1/Downloads-The-Light-and-the-Dark-e-book-b1-p8.htm
http://nuqotent.reservedblog.com/The-first-blog-b1/Batman-Harley-Quinn-book-b1-p12.htm
http://cierameea.guildomatic.com/news/show/1428127
http://blog.yahoo.com/_GSVFLDIE7Z4EUD35QBBVE5CGQM/articles/1144585
http://en.netlog.com/tiabui/blog/blogid=22042878
http://en.netlog.com/maniestrother/blog/blogid=22042884
http://reginaotahdep.inube.com/blog/3258511/download-south-florida-folklife-folklife-in-the-south-series-e-book/
http://omolhbbc.metroblog.com/seasons_of_the_dolorian_wizards_happy_holidays,_luanne_and_heatheria_princess_luanne_and_wizard_heatheria_ebook_downloads
http://buddyoebe.skyrock.com/3157469478-The-Kid-s-Guide-to-Chicago-Kid-s-Guides-Series-book.html
http://twitpic.com/cla89b
http://twitpic.com/cla89f
http://friendfeed.com/furoapa/d523cb96/alabama-civil-war-history-and-genealogy
http://jeanniebaeo.skyrock.com/3157469484-Coming-Up-Roses-Meet-Me-at-the-Fair.html
http://blog.yahoo.com/_KF3NJ6OTUVHWIP4MCOSUV4GYPQ/articles/1168202
http://twitpic.com/cla890
http://lavonaccoi.jigsy.com/entries/general/great-music-trivia-quiz-book-e-book-downloads

Alienware Launches First Linux Gaming PC

This isn't the first time that Dell has sold PCs witha free computer operating system based on Linux. Not too long after it bought out Alienware, then an independent maker of gaming PCs, it started selling Ubuntu-powered desktop and laptop PCs, but only online, and only on a limited selection of models.

Recently, Dell launched itsa MacBook Air-style ultrabook that's preloaded with Ubuntu and tools for developers. Its latest offering, however, is a little less "work" and a little more "play."

Pre-empting "Steambox" PCs like the Piston by several months, the Alienware X51 is a box roughly the size of a game console, but with actual PC hardware and a PC operating system inside. It comes in a variety of price points, depending on how powerful that hardware is, but the least expensive one-- $100 less than the

What kind of specs does it have?

An Intel Core i3 processor clocked at 3.3 GHz, 6 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM, a 1 TB 7200 RPM hard drive, and a 1 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 645 are the highlights. More expensive configurations have more powerful hardware, and don't match the available Windows configurations 1:1, possibly due to driver issues.

Does it count as a Steambox?

Dell isn't advertising it as being such, although the promo shots show it running Valve's Steam digital distribution service. Since the grand opening of Steam on Linux, it's gotten "over 165" titles, including some of Valve's finest like Team Fortress 2. Most Humble Bundle games and many indie titles also run on Linux.

What about Windows-only games?

One option is to put Windows on the X51 after buying it. You'd need to buy your own copy, though, and you might have to pay the full retail price since a PC manufactured by Alienware might not qualify for OEM licensing (and the price discount that you get by foregoing Microsoft technical support).

Another option is thewhich can let you run some Windows games like World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2. This is unofficial, however, and may require some troubleshooting.

What other options are there for Linux gaming systems?

System76, a small PC vendor which has been making Ubuntu PCs for more than five years now, sells thegaming laptop for $1,499. Home-built gaming rigs can also be made to support Linux by checking sites likefor benchmarks and compatibility of hardware components.

Jared Spurbeck is an open-source software enthusiast, who uses an Android phone and an Ubuntu laptop PC. He has been writing about technology and electronics since 2008.

http://tiaiioceeq.inube.com/blog/3277025/downloads-hope-s-cadillac-a-novel-book/
http://rosannaocy.orbs.com/obituaries.%28deaths+of+ali+sharr+and+mar
http://friendfeed.com/urecay/393a1520/collaboration-consultation-and-teamwork-for
http://hexclam.women-blogs.com/The-first-blog-b1/United-States-Presidential-Elections-1788-1860-The-Official-Results-online-b1-p15.htm
http://friendfeed.com/raniky/f7e5deb4/frank-lloyd-wright-between-principles-and-form
http://friendfeed.com/aoccoea/3aec89a9/2009-2014-world-outlook-for-high-frequency
http://twitpic.com/clpk84
http://kingmakk.guildomatic.com/news/show/1470350
http://geneoce.skyrock.com/3157888308-Downloads-Webster-s-New-World-Children-s-Dictionary.html
http://twitpic.com/clpk9k
http://twitpic.com/clpkb9
http://en.netlog.com/jimmiewittman/blog/blogid=22202785
http://en.netlog.com/margoriedivito/blog/blogid=22202781
http://joettaouno.guildomatic.com/news/show/1470354
http://soledadtnpss.inube.com/blog/3277028/downloads-digger-the-dinosaur-and-the-cake-mistake-my-first-i-can-read-ebook/
http://aebroeud.altervista.org/download-career-crossroads-e-book/

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Snowmobiler Caleb Moore remains in critical condition after a dramatic crash at the Winter X Games in Aspen.

A publicist for the family reissued a statement Tuesday thanking fans, friends and family for their support and asked for continued prayers.

The 25-year-old was performing a flip Thursday when he clipped the top of a jump and went over the handlebars. The snowmobile rolled over him, but he walked off the course with help and went to a hospital with a concussion.

While there, he developed bleeding around his heart and was flown to Grand Junction for surgery Friday. His family said Sunday that Moore then had a secondary complication involving his brain. They didn't provide details.

Moore's younger brother, Colten, also crashed in the competition and suffered a separated pelvis.

http://en.netlog.com/effieoliver/blog/blogid=22150805
http://twitpic.com/cljzkg
http://julianaqhq.skyrock.com/3157736454-Download-Metro-Y-chief-thinks-role-more-of-a-ministry-than-a-job-A.html
http://friendfeed.com/airrqy/340bae05/download-applications-tools-and-techniques-on
http://en.netlog.com/donnwoodhouse/blog/blogid=22150820
http://en.netlog.com/lucianagain/blog/blogid=22150823
http://pricillaosd.skyrock.com/3157736470-Downloads-Stanley-Montana-book.html
http://karolhos.jigsy.com/entries/general/html5-hacking-and-javascript-security-attacks-and-defenses-online
http://marissaeerc.orbs.com/
http://fosteritt.soup.io/post/309755368/Downloads-Tractatus-de-mutuo-et-usura-et
http://alvinanozp.jimdo.com/2013/04/24/corvette-racers-race-history-of-america-s-sports-car-and-the-drivers-who-pushed-it-to-the-limit-on-tracks-from-sebring-to-le-mans-ebook-downloads/
http://rcvubcuo.altervista.org/joyfully-single-in-a-couples-world-knowing-contentment-peace-and-fulfullment-now-ebook-downloads/
http://marielanbhm.guildomatic.com/news/show/1456423

Breakfast cereal tied to lower BMI for k

By Kathryn Doyle

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Regularly eating cereal for breakfast is tied to healthy weight for kids, according to a new study that endorses making breakfast cereal accessible to low-income kids to help fight childhood obesity.

One in every four American children lives in a food insecure household where breakfast isn't a sure thing, lead author Dr. Lana Frantzen told Reuters Health.

"(Cereal) is an excellent breakfast choice, it's simple, and gets those essential nutrients that children need, especially low income minority children," who tend to be hit hardest by childhood obesity and related health problems, said Frantzen, who is employed by Dairy MAX, a regional dairy council in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Previous studies have linked eating breakfast with maintaining a lower body mass index (BMI) over time. The new study looked at the role that breakfast, specifically cereal, plays in both weight and nutrition among low-income kids.

Frantzen and her coauthors interviewed 625 schoolchildren as they progressed from fourth to sixth grades in San Antonio. Once a year they asked the children to remember what they had had to eat over the previous three days and calculated their BMI, a measure of weight relative to height.

As fourth graders, 64 percent of the kids said they'd eaten breakfast on each of the last three days, compared to 42 percent by the time they were sixth graders.

With data for three days per year for three years in a row, the researchers ended up with nine days of breakfast analysis for each child. Kids who ate cereal four out of the nine days tended to be in the 95th percentile for BMI, which is considered overweight, compared to kids who ate cereal all nine days, whose measurements were in the 65th percentile, in the healthy weight range.

Thirty-two percent of fourth graders did not eat breakfast at all, 25 percent had something other than cereal and about 43 percent had cereal.

Cereals, like Frosted flakes, Cheerios and Kix, were the most common breakfast items. Children who didn't eat cereal but did have breakfast reported having foods ranging from scrambled eggs, white bread and sausage to granola bars, tortillas and breakfast tacos.

Only 70 kids had cereal on every one of the three days, but for each time they had cereal, their intake of certain nutrients was higher than that of other kids, Frantzen's group reports in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Kids who ate more cereal got more vitamin D, B-3, B-12, riboflavin, calcium, iron, zinc and potassium in their diets than kids who ate less cereal or none at all. They also got slightly more calories, fat, fiber and sugar.

Cereals are fortified with a variety of vitamins and minerals, and the milk that usually comes with cereals is a good source of calcium, potassium and vitamin D, Frantzen said.

"I think it was a nice advancement in knowledge overall about the importance of eating breakfast," according to Dr. Matthew Haemer, medical director of the nutrition and fitness clinic at Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora.

"But the analysis that they do didn't separate out kids who only ate cereal compared to those who ate something else," said Haemer, who was not involved in the study.

Policies like the School Breakfast Program are already in place to provide a low cost or free meal to kids who qualify, but the issue demands more attention and resources, since generations of kids are starting out the day without a healthy breakfast, he said.

Haemer told Reuters Health he was particularly struck by the fact that for the three days surveyed, each additional day that included cereal was associated with a 2 percentile decrease in BMI.

"Moving BMI percentile down 2 percentage points, that's not going to cure the obesity epidemic, but it is a significant difference," he said.

There is an association between cereal and healthier BMI, but it's still unclear how it works, Haemer said. He recommends that if parents choose cereal as a quick, easy option, they go for one high in fiber and low in sugar and fat.

"They didn't really look thoughtfully at the other types of breakfasts that could be eaten, for example there may be benefits of including oatmeal and low fat turkey sausage that could be part of a healthy breakfast," he said.

"There's still a lot of science to be done," he said. "Cereal appears to be part of the picture but it's not the complete picture."

SOURCE: http://bit.ly/Z2ao7l Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, online February 27, 2013.

http://friendfeed.com/bveuu/b0e8cee1/downloads-recovery-and-refining-of-precious
http://en.netlog.com/modestawelty/blog/blogid=21990165
http://ivceutued.altervista.org/download-preventive-cardiology-insights-into-the-prevention-and-treatment-of-cardiovascular-disease/
http://bryantyooy.inube.com/blog/3250936/downloads-ella-minnow-pea-e-book/
http://venusouoq.inube.com/blog/3250938/criminal-court-dictionary-english-spanish-espa-nol-ingles-download/
http://edgardobys.orbs.com/professional+data+warehousing+with+sql
http://ronapus.0-yo.com/The-first-blog-b1/Download-Vegetarisch-leben-Die-Notwendigkeit-fleischloser-Ernhrung-book-b1-p7.htm
http://teouaob.altervista.org/downloads-parties-compare-well-with-look-at-returns-commentary-an-article-from-arkansas-business-ebook/
http://cortezerzb.soup.io/post/309488320/ADHD-Treatment-From-Medications-to-Alternative-Treatments
http://twitpic.com/cl40j2
http://friendfeed.com/nzyahm/a12cf651/latin-2002-theoretical-informatics-5-conf
http://en.netlog.com/donndoles/blog/blogid=21990173
http://benjaminqfc.jigsy.com/entries/general/downloads-mobile-sawing-routing-center-downloadable-woodworking-plan-ebook
http://arnettelmi.soup.io/post/309488328/Downloads-The-Object-Oriented-Thought-Process-ebook
http://twitpic.com/cl40k5

In Psy's musical wake, K-pop tries subst

By Narae Kim and Jane Chung

SEOUL (Reuters) - Singing a duet in front of thousands of fans with South Korean rapper Psy, a world sensation for his "Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman" videos, would be heady for any singer, much less one who's only 16 years old and has just launched her first album.

But the soulful-voiced Lee Hi, like Psy, has been breaking rules for the K-pop music industry since her discovery in an amateur talent show two years ago, including looking more like the girl next door than a diva.

South Korea's love affair with pretty boy bands and doll-like girl groups may be starting to crack and its music industry is becoming more willing to experiment with talented and less lovingly groomed stars, following Psy's megahit "Gangnam Style," YouTube's most popular song with over 1.5 billion hits.

The song catapulted the sunglass-wearing singer with the garish jackets to global fame and gave an additional boost to the growing K-pop industry, despite his difference from the polished K-pop norms - a change that came just in time for Lee Hi, who sang with Psy at an April 13 concert at a Seoul stadium.

"Other singers are very pretty and tall. I am short, no matter how high my heels are," said Lee, referring to the height and well-groomed slimness of the nine-member Girls Generation, one of K-pop's most famous groups.

"I cannot beat them with looks, so I figured, I need to focus on singing well. That's what I'm good at and like most," added Lee, whose demure clothing contrasts with the long-legged, miniskirted look of Girls Generation.

Lee was runner-up in a national talent show while still in junior high school, gaining a contract with YG Entertainment Inc, the same company that manages Psy. The top song from her debut album, "Rose", surged to the top of the charts after its March release.

By contrast, the vast majority of K-pop wannabes go through years of rigorous training at entertainment agencies, sometimes even 10 years. Many in Girls Generation trained for five years.

These "idol trainees" prepare with lessons in singing, dancing, acting and foreign languages and lives similar to that of military cadets. They live together, stick to a schedule prepared by their agencies, and practice dancing and singing for hours each day, without knowing if they will ever even debut.

Some will go on severe diets and have plastic surgery, aiming for the pale-skinned, slender and double-eyelid looks idealized by Yoona from Girls Generation.

The result is an industry whose overseas sales surged 135 percent in 2011 to $196 million, according to a Music Industry White Paper published by the Korean Creative Content Agency. In 2006, overseas sales were worth $16.7 million.

SIGNS OF CHANGE

But change had begun, slowly, before Lee Hi took the stage.

A handful of singers have now come out of audition and talent shows on Korean television, most notably the indie band Busker Busker. Their single "Cherry Blossom Ending" reigned on the charts after its release and topped them again this spring.

Analysts say growth of audition stars, who have worked their way into the industry through their love of music and sheer talent, may help widen the spectrum of K-pop.

"Such audition programs can contribute to species diversity of Korean pop music," said Lee Dongyeon, professor at Korea National University of Arts.

Cultural critic Bae Kook-nam agreed that the programs have provided a fairer way into the industry for talented individuals, but what K-pop really needs is to improve content, its songs are often slammed as cookie-cutter replicas.

"Quality content is best achieved through diversifying musical genres and performance.

WEST, Texas (AP) A church in a rural Texas town is holding Sunday worship in a hayfield since its building is blocked off due to the massive fertilizer blast.

Families and firefighters in tiny West packed church services on the first Sunday since the West Fertilizer Co. exploded Wednesday night.

First Baptist Church remains in a barricaded area where the damage and rubble are most pronounced. So Pastor John Crowder set up folding chairs in a field and delivered his sermon from the flatbed of an 18-wheeler.

Assistant Texas fire marshal Kelly Kistner says all fires have been extinguished at the explosion scene and the remaining fertilizer tanks are not a danger. Authorities don't know how the fire started yet.

At least 14 people died and 200 were injured.

http://obiaqfbo.metroblog.com/the_american_practical_navigator_bowditch_downloads
http://lutherppip.guildomatic.com/news/show/1409722
http://twitpic.com/cl3j2e
http://douglasmdkzti.webs.com/apps/blog/show/25840241
http://ingarfz.guildomatic.com/news/show/1409723
http://delvrk.jigsy.com/entries/general/lift-trucks-a-practical-guide-for-buyers-and-users-ebook
http://nonamqkl.orbs.com/
http://en.netlog.com/agnesmcgeehan/blog/blogid=21984842
http://clydeniry.orbs.com/
http://lasandrahm.orbs.com/birding+missouri%3A+a+guide+to+seasona

US rate on 30-year mortgage rises to 3.7

WASHINGTON (AP) Average rates on fixed mortgages rose this week, the first increase in seven weeks. But mortgage rates remain near historic lows, boosting prospects for home sales this year.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the average rate on the 30-year loan increased to 3.71 percent. That's up from 3.67 percent last week, the lowest since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s.

The average rate on the 15-year mortgage, a popular refinancing option, rose to 2.98 percent. That's up from 2.94 percent last week, also a record low.

The rate on the 30-year loan has been below 4 percent since early December. Low rates are a key reason the housing industry is showing modest signs of a recovery this year.

In April, sales of both previously occupied homes and new homes rose near two-year highs. Builders are gaining more confidence in the market, breaking ground on more homes and requesting more permits to build single-family homes later this year.

Low rates could also provide some help to the economy if more people refinance. When people refinance at lower rates, they pay less interest on their loans and have more money to spend.

Still, the pace of home sales remains well below healthy levels. Economists say it could be years before the market is fully healed.

Many people are still having difficulty qualifying for home loans or can't afford larger down payments required by banks. Some would-be home buyers are holding off because they fear that home prices could keep falling.

The economy is growing only modestly and job creation slowed sharply in April and May. U.S. employers created only 69,000 jobs in May, the fewest in a year.

Mortgage rates have been dropping because they tend to track the yield on the 10-year Treasury note. Uncertainty about how Europe will resolve its debt crisis has led investors to buy more Treasury securities, which are considered safe investments. As demand for Treasurys increase, the yield falls.

To calculate average rates, Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country on Monday through Wednesday of each week.

The average does not include extra fees, known as points, which most borrowers must pay to get the lowest rates. One point equals 1 percent of the loan amount.

The average fee for 30-year loans was 0.7 point, unchanged from last week. The fee for 15-year loans also was unchanged at 0.7 point.

The average rate on one-year adjustable rate mortgages slipped to 2.78 percent from 2.79 percent last week. The fee for one-year adjustable rate loans was 0.5, up from 0.4.

http://blog.yahoo.com/_KSIZ2HUCQEOXY5HMKSSOMSF42A/articles/1267619
http://blog.yahoo.com/_XHM2C2YMUWDQNCOF6FEUCKA3IQ/articles/1265258
http://twitpic.com/cko8st
http://larryfduu.guildomatic.com/news/show/1371391
http://harmonyhpolcuf.inube.com/blog/3233066/the-early-national-period-and-expansion-1783-to-1859-ebook/
http://friendfeed.com/unytii/443a0877/cold-war-holidays-american-tourism-in-france
http://wilbertsmzq.inube.com/blog/3233067/richard-nixon-the-man-behind-the-mask-ebook-downloads/
http://marcelauuho.soup.io/post/309236550/Winters-Heat-Heat-Series-download
http://maryannocn.soup.io/post/309236554/Download-Feature-Writing-for-Newspapers-and-Magazines
http://friendfeed.com/ivaiau/c4fd4b11/download-negro-leagues-story-of-black-baseball
http://friendfeed.com/oaasq/3e082ecb/downloads-mystery-megapack-25-modern-and
http://raymondeooni.soup.io/post/309236557/Downloads-Spirit-of-the-Living-Room-Spirit
http://twitpic.com/cko8v8
