First comes love, then comes marriage, and then comes two plane tickets to far-flung destinations for rest and relaxation. But for some newlyweds, those boarding passes may not lead to the same departure gate.

Conflicting schedules and demanding jobs are causing a number of recently married couples to take unimoons, a post-wedding retreat spent without one’s spouse.

Author Bill Powers wrote about his own experience choosing the unimoon path in his new book New Slow City: Living Simply in the World’s Fastest City.

“Even as Melissa and I married in a small ceremony with family and close friends, our overworking led us to join the disquieting ‘uni-moon’ trend,” Powers wrote. “Instead of a honeymoon trip together in the busy weeks after our wedding, we each took separate, individual vacations without each other–uni-moons, or what amounted to a few days of free time at the end of separate work trips.”

While Powers’ wife spent a few days solo in the sunny Dominican Republic, he wandered the romantic streets of Paris alone. The trip ultimately inspired the author to reflect on whether he and his wife had become too wrapped up in their careers, and how they could share more meaningful time together.

Travel writer Ann Abel didn’t initially set out to vacation without her husband, but felt compelled to extend her stay beyond their trip so she could advance her byline.

“My solomoon in Southeast Asia came about because of work,” she told ABC News. “I extended my trip beyond our two weeks together because editors started saying ‘Oh, you’re in the neighborhood, could you go here and write about this for me?’ I was just starting as a freelancer then and eager to make money and build my brand.”

After 16 days together, Abel’s husband returned home. But she continued on for another two weeks.

“My fiancé was incredibly understanding every time I told him I was adding to the trip. I was anxious when I asked him about each one,” she said. “He would have loved to join me, but had an office job he had to get back to.”

Abel is no longer married, but she doesn’t attribute the breakup to her extra island time. Still, she doesn’t champion it either.

“I wouldn’t have done it if I wasn’t a travel writer and can’t say I recommend it,” she said.

Powers echoed those sentiments and went so far as to caution against taking a unimoon.

“Couples might ask themselves this: Why take an individualistic first step in the wonderfully communal journey of marriage? Might that be oxymoronic?” he told ABC News, adding that the uni-moon trend plays in to a “work-and-spend” pattern.

“On one of the several real honeymoons we took after the disasterous unimoons, we took a stay-cation in our Greenwich Village neighborhood, lowering the carbon footprint associated with traveling long distances and sinking into the beauty right around us,” he said.Read more at:www.kissyaustralia.com

Due to the popularity of the event, the raceday organisers made the decision to stop allowing general admission entries after 3pm - the first time such a call had been made at the event.

Far from the foaming horses, discarded plastic wine glasses, RTDs and hot dogs was the Nicolas Feuillatte Fashions in the Field, characterised by suits, sunglasses, outlandish headpieces and bold floral prints.

The event's overall winner and winner of the Natalie Chan Millinery category, dietician Charlotte Moor, 25, said she had crafted her off-the-shoulder dress from vintage fabric in conjunction with her mother Ali, who also made her fascinator.

The subtle touch of turquoise in the head-piece was again referenced with a turquoise necklace and shoes.

"She's a milliner and she always used to make dresses for us when we were little," Ms Moor said of her mother.

"She found some fantastic fabric on Ebay and then it was a bit of a joint effort trying to figure out what the dress was going to look like and what we could do for the hat to match it."

Ms Moor said she would be sharing her $30,000 prize package, including a trip to Queenstown, with her mother to thank her.

"It's sort of a family affair, my sister and my mum and I, we always come. We come just as much for the fashion as for the races."

The event was judged by stylist Lulu Wilcox, Australian model Becky Lamb and The Crowd Goes Wild presenter Hayley Holt, who said she enjoyed her first foray as a fashion judge. "It's my initiation into the fashion pack."

"I was looking for something that's a bit fresh, something that's modern and not too stuffy for the races.

"I think it's a lot of fun, you can just really go outrageous with it - I mean, who's going to be wearing these crazy things on their heads everyday, it's great."

Winner of the Canvas Ladies Racewear category - open to women aged 25-44 - Claire Hahn, 33, said her son had chosen her bold red ankle-length skirt, which she coupled with a sleeveless dark blue top she had made especially for the day. "I wanted a bit of texture against the silk skirt."

Mrs Hahn said she completed her raceday outfit with an Alexander McQueen bag her husband had brought her for Christmas and a hat she had crafted herself.

It was Mrs Hahn's second fashion in the field win, having taken out the younger age category "eight years and three kids" ago.

Swimwear designer Carena West was a finalist in the category and said she made her own white dress and designed it's blue and red geometric print.

Winner of the Ellerslie Under 25 category, Eleanor Campbell, 19, came to the races from Hamilton wearing a blue floral Chi Chi London dress she had altered by her grandmother. She completed her race-wear with white lace gloves and a teal Monika Neuhauser fascinator.

She shared the runway with her grandmother Val Harman, who was also a finalist in the Specsavers Ascot Lady category - open to women 45 years and older.

"We're all a bit keen on fashion," Ms Harman said. "We've got a lot of ideas from Ellie's mother - she was last year's supreme winner."

Ms Harman said she crafted her own dress, white with a bold floral print. "It started off as two dresses so I created into something that was more appropriate for my age."

Winter is here again and there’s no escaping the fact that the cold weather conditions can play havoc with your skin.

There are, however, many things we can do to prevent or repair skin problems at this time of year. An unexpected flash of skin under a sheer fabric can be sexy and sophisticated on a date, at a party, even in the office.

But with anything much more than a sliver, it's easy to cross the too-much-of-a-good-thing line. And there's no taking it back.

Just ask Tom Mora, women's design director at J. Crew, who's created sheer beach cover-ups stylish and elegant enough to be worn as tops and dresses. But, he says, wearer beware: "You should wear a slip, or a cami and brief. They are great pieces but their real intent is for a swimsuit to be underneath."

He adds, "I don't want to go into a restaurant and see someone in a completely sheer top."

At least there, you can look down at your plate. What about the office when sheer fabrics do what they are supposed to do and draw the eye to a particular place?

Remember what your mom said: "Eye contact," advises Audrey Slater, fashion director at Redbook magazine.

"This trend is definitely peaking this year, she says, "but it's not a trend for everyone, anytime and everywhere."

For the past few seasons, designers have been crafting strategic sheer panels into their collections, with Vera Wang carving out bodices and Marchesa putting sheer blouses under corsets. J. Crew has made regular offerings of chiffon and cotton voile, and Ann Taylor reinterprets the menswear-inspired button-shirt using lace and georgette.

It's not just a warm-weather look, either, with retailers planning peek-a-boo styles for autumn/winter, too.

The collective eye has adjusted and embraced these looks as more delicate alternatives to bare skin, and as a feminine touch to more structured silhouettes.

But maybe some women have gotten a little too comfortable, which could make the people around them uncomfortable.

Slater says she'd much rather see a sheer panel or inset than a whole sheer garment. She definitely doesn't want to see the bra of any of her peers and colleagues across a desk, but a sheer panel at the yoke from the bustline to neckline that shows bra straps "is an acceptable strategy."

Lisa Axelson, creative director at Ann Taylor, says she loves the look of a gown with a fully sheer or lace back, but it's a special occasion look, a really special occasion. For daily life, she'd recommend an elongated pencil skirt that hits below the knee with a sheer blouse that has a matching camisole. Navy would be a lovely colour.

For an evening work-related event, she likes a black lace blouse with a full-coverage black bra under it and black trousers.

There always has to be balance to the outfit, and that's never clearer than with something sheer, Axelson says. If there's sheerness to the top, the bottom should be modest, while a sheer hemline is best complemented by a demure top.

Mora suggests having a boyfriend blazer or slouchy cardigan handy, also for contrast - or the unexpected meeting you might be called into.

Charles Benton, senior director of design of contemporary brand Bebe, would like to see more women imitate the sultry style of Sophia Loren, who has been playing with sheer illusion fabrics, especially black-on-black combinations, on her bombshell figure since the 1950s. She wore illusion sleeves with what was otherwise a sweetheart black cocktail dress to the Golden Globes in 2010.

He thinks the resurgence of that style is largely due to a Dolce & Gabbana collection for spring 2012, which was indeed inspired by La Dolce Vita. Still, Benton observes, it's sexy without going too far. "Sexy can have an aggressiveness, but there still needs to be a little bit of pretty. This isn't really a place for a sports bra."

Choice of undergarments is, of course, important when everyone else can see them. There is the subtle, almost shadowy look of wearing the same colour slip or tank to match the sheer garment, or you go bold with a contrast colour. Perhaps the most interesting illusion is created with an undergarment that matches your skin tone, she says. (It's a trick done on the red carpet all the time.)

Either way, make sure the underpinnings are pretty, says Norah Alberto, fashion director at Maidenform. "Take an extra step in the morning and take a long look in the mirror - a 360-degree look, please - because when you are walking down the street we are seeing all of you if you're in something sheer," she says.

It's official—the royal baby is due to arrive any moment now!

As we anxiously await the birth of the regal bundle of joy, we're taking a moment to look back at one of our favorite things about Kate Middleton's pregnancy: her fabulous maternity wardrobe!

Sure, we may have had to wait a few months into the naturally slender Duchess of Cambridge's pregnancy until we first started to spy a burgeoning bump, but once her belly started to swell, the Prince William's wife proved that her changing figure definitely wasn't going to cramp her legendarily chic sense of style.

For starters, the British beauty continued her well known practice of reaching for high and low clothing items. In fact, one of our absolute favorite pregnancy looks from the royal, the pretty polka dot dress she wore during a tour of the Warner Bros. film studio in Leavesden, England, back in April, was from high street retailer Topshop.

Apparently, Middleton was a fan of the frock too, recycling it the very next month for a friend's wedding, where she ditched the tailored Ralph Lauren blazer she wore with the dress the first time around in favor of a jaunty fascinator. The public was definitely in love with girly look too, clearing out Topshop's stock of the $76 frock mere hours after the mom-to-be debuted it!

But some of the expectant royal's best pregnancy looks weren't available to her fashion fans. On her second anniversary to Prince William, she absolutely glowed in a custom-made taupe shift dress, which she paired with a pretty peach Tara Jarmon jacket and her go-to L.K. Bennett pumps. A few days earlier, she showed off her growing baby bump in a charming pastel blue Emilia Wickstead empire waist dress and Rupert Sanderson heels.

Middleton also sported some bold colors and punchy prints throughout the past nine months. We absolutely adored the sunny style statement she made in a bright yellow ensemble—again by Emilia Wickstead—that had her looking as fresh as a flower at the annual Buckingham Palace garden party in May.

Perhaps the only patterned look we enjoyed more on the pregnant duchess, was the playful Hobbs Dalmation print dress she wore for her last pre-baby solo public appearance for a Royal Princess cruise ship christening. We're so used to seeing Middleton in classic styles that the cheeky print brought an instant smile to our faces.

We expect the first-time mother will continue to wow us post-baby, and can't wait to see what darling looks she—and the royal baby!—will wow us with in the months to come!

DO wear your previously-worn fancy attire. Throw a cardigan over it. Wear that s&!t inside out. Rock anything confidently, and it's a brave fashion choice. You're already spending major cash on gifts they'll get doubles of and probably return.

DON'T cry off your mascara at the dinner table during the reception. Use ceremony time to appropriately get all your "Poor, pitiful me! I'm still single and always will be, and my mom won't shut up about grandkids, and when did I start sobbing?" tears out. That's what it's there for.

DO also use ceremony time to pick out your ONE acceptable hook-up. If you've seen one ceremony, you've seen them all. (If you've never been to a wedding, SPOILER ALERT: Love does not envy or boast.) Use this time to find someONE cute, and take a sober, mental note: You are not allowed to make out with anyone else on the dance floor during "Careless Whisper."

Actually, DO NOT make out with ANYONE on the dance floor during "Careless Whisper." Thanks, Vine and and all my a-hole friends who think it's funny to watch me embarrass myself in my most incriminating 6 seconds. Until the after party at The Hangge-Uppe.

If you do make out with someone you just met on the dance floor, DO own it by winking at any camera you see, because hey, you still got it. Who else do you know that can get someone they just met to find the Chicken Dance sexy?

DO NOT talk about how much cooler Carrie's wedding was than this one. Carrie always has the best s&!t, and everyone knows it. Even the bride's grandmother knows it, and you don't need to be telling her right now.

DON'T YOU DARE grab the groom's ass during the dollar dance or put a note reading, "This could've been us" inside. So what you dated in college and he said he'd love you forever and now he actually means it with this beautiful downtown executive something or other? That sort of action, even if you're totally joking, isn't funny. It's tacky. And classless. Let's face it, that was just dumb... why did I do that?!

DO leave without telling anyone goodbye. I do this everywhere, not just at weddings. It saves everyone from an embarrassing "It was so good to see you, whatever-your-name-is," and no one will ever know just how much of that free pink wine you've consumed.

DO be happy. As much as we single sad sacks want to believe that weddings are a constant reminder that we still haven't found another bed-ridden Internet troll to share our lives with, in reality, it's a celebration of two people -- most likely one of whom has spent no less than 200 hours on TheKnot.com -- who have decided to spend the rest of their lives together.

They thought of you as someone they wanted to share that one special day with.Be strong. Good luck. Don't eff this up.
