PARIS (Reuters) - Serena Williams has no qualms about keeping people waiting. But if others want the queen of tennis to play the waiting game - they can think again.

The world number one was in no mood to dally around on Philippe Chatrier Court on Thursday as she unleashed all her firepower to wallop Sara Errani 6-0 6-1 to reach the French Open final for the first time since 2002.

She blitzed last year's runner-up in 46 spellbinding minutes to complete the most one sided semi-final win at the claycourt grand slam since compatriot Chris Evert whitewashed Camille Benjamin 6-0 6-0 in 1984.

Williams appeared to be in a world of her own as she kept Errani hanging around at the net for the coin toss while she very slowly peeled off the dark grey jogging bottoms she wore under her dress and meticulously folded it together.

When Williams finally did turn her attention to the Italian, she made short work of her startled opponent.

The American, who owns only one Suzanne Lenglen Cup among her 15 grand slam trophies, left the fifth seed down and out after producing 40 screaming winners to set up a showdown with defending champion Maria Sharapova.

Errani won only 16 points in the entire match and did not even manage to muster an outright winner from her racket until the 10th game of the contest.

A shell-shocked Errani repeatedly used just one word to describe her opponent's performance.

"She played unbelievable. That's it," said Errani.

"What she did today is unbelievable. She's an unbelievable player."

Williams agreed: "Sometimes I'm surprised. I'm like, Is that me?"

The match-up between the two seemed lopsided even before the players got on court.

Williams had 15 majors, Errani none.

Williams had won 234 grand slam matches, Errani 37.

Williams was appearing in her 23rd grand slam semi-final, Errani her third.

Williams had won five of their previous meetings, Errani none.

When the duo stood side-by-side at the net for the pre-match photocall, just what a tall order the diminutive Errani faced was apparent to all those packed into the arena.

There were early signs that it might be a bad day for Errani when she tripped up and landed on her hands after launching into her very first serve.

Had she known what would unfold, she may have not bothered getting back on her feet.

She watched Williams blast forehand winners, blitz service return winners, zip backhand winners and smash overhead winners.

It was little wonder that when the players retreated to their seats with the American leading 6-0 3-0, a dejected Errani appeared on the verge of breaking down.

She blinked back the tears to finally produce a crosscourt winner in the next game, a point that took 35-minutes in the making, and pumped both arms in the air seconds later when the scoreboard finally registered a game next to her name.

The rapturous applause were soon drowned out, however, with yet another booming winner flying off Williams' racket and she finished off proceedings in typical fashion, a blinding ace.

DURBAN (Reuters) - Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer led a chorus of praise on Sunday for experienced winger Bryan Habana, who underlined his world class qualities with two game-winning moves as South Africa beat Italy 44-10 in their test in Durban on Saturday.

Habana, who turns 30 on Wednesday, won the man-of-the-match award after setting up an early try for centre JJ Engelbrecht and scoring a breath-taking effort of his own at a crucial juncture of the match in the second half.

It extended to 48 his record as South Africa's top test try scorer and reinforced his image as a match-winner for his country at a time when younger players have threatened to capture the public's imagination.

"In Super Rugby he has looked rather ordinary this season but there is something about Bryan that when you put him in a Bok jersey he's extraordinary," said Meyer, as his side now looks ahead to a test against Scotland in Nelspruit this Saturday.

"If Bryan plays well, the team plays well. He's still very excited to play for the Boks. I spoke to him in the tunnel just before the team ran out and asked if he was still as excited about playing after all his caps. He said he couldn't wait to get out there."

Habana, in his 84th test appearance, made the try for Engelbrecht after fielding an Italian kick and then darting off with a jinx or two and at incredible pace before passing for the centre to easily score.

In the second half, as South Africa lost a grip on the game and were struggling, Habana put them back on a winning track with another magical move.

Again fielding a high ball almost on the halfway line, he cut inside from the right wing before suddenly accelerating and cutting straight through the middle of the Italians to dot down between the poles, all in the blink of an eye.

"Our game-plan suits him and it's a reason he scores a lot of tries," added Meyer.

Habana was named after former England football captain Bryan Robson by his Manchester United-supporting father but he made his mark in rugby as a World Cup winner, a three time South African player of the year and the voted the world's best in 2007.

Habana is set to leave for Toulon in France at the end of the Super Rugby season and is likely to remain a steady fixture for the Springboks for some time to come despite Meyer's preference for home-based players.

An international team of astronomers has found thatlikely contributed at least 20 percent of the infrared cosmic background, light emitted 400 million to 800 million years after the Big Bang that created our universe 13.8 billion years ago.

These early pioneers may have been the seeds that later grew into , which contain millions to billions of times the mass of our sun, researchers said. []

"It's a relief to find a possible signature of these seeds," study co-author Guenther Hasinger, director of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, told SPACE.com.

The earliest black holes

Black holes possess gravitational fields so powerful that not even light can escape. They are generally believed to form after a star dies in a gigantic explosion known as a , which crushes the remaining core into a tiny but incredibly dense volume.

It's unclear how black holes grow to supermassive proportions, but they can apparently do so quite rapidly. For example, some of them were apparently already well-established by 800 million years or so after the .

To learn more about the earliest stars and the first black holes, the study team analyzed X-ray and infrared signals using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope, respectively.

The X-rays that Chandra saw likely came from matter that became superheated as it rushed into black holes, researchers said. The infrared rays Spitzer detected, on the other hand, make up the cosmic infrared background, the collective light from clusters of massive stars in the universe's first stellar generations after the Big Bang, as well as from black holes, which generate vast amounts of energy as they devour gas.

The investigators focused on a region known as the Extended Groth Strip, a well-analyzed slice of sky slightly larger than the full moon in the constellation Bootes. They concentrated on spots that shone powerfully in both infrared and X-ray light. Black holes are the only plausible sources that can produce both forms of light at the intensities they looked at, scientists said.

"This measurement took us some five years to complete and the results came as a great surprise to us," lead author Nico Cappelluti, an astronomer with the National Institute of Astrophysics in Bologna, Italy, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said in a statement.

"Our results indicate black holes are responsible for at least 20 percent of the cosmic infrared background, which indicates intense activity from black holes feeding on gas during the epoch of the first stars," co- author Alexander Kashlinsky, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement.

How monsters grow

These early objects could help explain the origins of supermassive black holes, researchers said, and also shed light on another puzzle from the universe's youth a stage known as reionization.

During this era between about 150 million to 800 million years after the , radiation ionized the neutrally charged hydrogen pervading the universe to its constituent protons and electrons.

"It is currently thought generally, although not unanimously, that stars were responsible for reionization," Kashlinsky told SPACE.com. "Our result indicates that black holes were a significant, potentially dominant, contributor to that process."

It remains uncertain how massive these early black holes were. They could be mini- containing a few tens of thousands of solar masses, born from the collapse of giant clouds of gas and dust. Or they could be micro-quasars a few hundred solar masses large spawned from massive dying stars.

Mini-quasars would be heavily obscured by clouds and thus likely would not factor into reionization very much, while micro-quasars could easily pump out enough radiation to make a key contribution, Hasinger said.

The Euclid mission from the European Space Agency and the eROSITA mission from Russia and Germany might be able to shed more light on these early black holes. In addition, NASA's upcoming James Webb Space Telescope might be able to see these objects individually, confirming whether they are mini-quasars or micro-quasars, Hasinger said.

With evident impatience, Obama suggested at one point that he set limits on what the National Security Agency (NSA) can grab without a judge's OK because he himself might one day be the target of such snooping.

"I came in with a healthy skepticism about these programs," Obama said at an event in San Jose, Calif., initially designed to trumpet Obamacare but subverted by the dramatic disclosures. "My team evaluated them. We scrubbed them thoroughly. We actually expanded some of the oversight, increased some of the safeguards."

But, the president said, "My assessment, and my teams assessment, was that they help us prevent terrorist attacks. And the modest encroachments on privacy that are involved in getting phone numbers, or duration [of calls] without a name attached, and without looking at content, that on net it was worth us doing."

His remarks came amid an uproar over a series of news media reports contending that the NSA has been scooping upwith the blessing of a secret court orderthe telephone records of millions of Americans. Other news outlets have reported that the agency, arguably the world's largest electronic spying operation, has also been sucking up personal data from major Internet companies. (Yahoo, parent company of Yahoo News, is listed among those firms).

Obama underlined that "nobody is listening to your phone calls" in the broad NSA phone sweep, and that doing so would require a federal judge to sign off. As for the Internet surveillance, he said, it "does not apply to U.S. citizens and it does not apply to people living in the United States."

But "there are some trade-offs," Obama said. "You cant have 100 percent security and also then have 100 percent privacy, and zero inconvenience. Were going to have to make some choices as a society."

The surveillance programs have helped the government "anticipate and prevent possible terrorist activity," he said. "On balance, we have established a process and a procedure that the American people should feel comfortable about."

Obama said Congress had been fully briefed on the various secret programs, and suggested that lawmakers who disapproved of those initiatives or to "abuses" could have objected. But lawmakers critical of such programs have repeatedly made clear that they are hamstrung by the administration's decision to classify informationmaking a full, public debate involving the American public impossible.

The president dismissed the "hype" that portrays such programs as s stepping stone towardsgovernment. He also denounced the leaks that fed the news reports, saying the nation's secrets cannot be "dumped out willy-nilly" without damaging national security.

The Obama administration, while portraying government whistle-blowers and an independent media as pivotal to a healthy democracy, has prosecuted more leakers than all other administrations combined. And the past few weeks have brought disclosures of Justice Department surveillance of reporters and even one instance of a journalist accused in a government document of acting like a spy for doing his job.

"Thats not to suggest that you just say trust me, were doing the right thing, we know who the bad guys are,'" Obama insisted.

"With respect to my concerns about privacy issues: I will leave this office at some pointsometime in the next three and a half yearsand after that I'll be a private citizen," he said. "And I suspect that on a list of people who might be targeted so that somebody could read their emails or listen to their phone calls, Id probably be pretty high on that list. So it's not as though I don't have a a personal interest in making sure my privacy is protected."

Retired Gen. John Allen said Afghans need certainty on how many U.S. troops will stay behind after the majority complete their withdrawal by Dec. 31, 2014, before they will choose to side with the Afghan government or the Taliban.

"In the absence of clarity about the future, you'll do what you know," he said. "If...taking no position...has kept you alive," Afghans will continue to hedge their bets, he said.

Allen was speaking as the Center for a New American Security, a Washington-based think tank, released a report by him, former top U.S. defense official Michele Flournoy and The Brookings Institution's defense expert Michael O'Hanlon.

The report warns the United States and its allies could risk losing any achievements if the drawdown ahead of the December 2014 deadline is accelerated or if the international community skimps on continuing aid to the country after 2014.

All three authors urged the Obama administration to announce troop numbers

"I'd like to see it soon," Allen said. "What the president has said to the Afghans is we will not abandon you," Allen said. "What is missing right now...are the specifics associated with that." Allen had recommended a post-2014 U.S. force of 13,600, he said, supported by additional NATO troops. Officials have said they are considering a range of between 8,000 and 12,000 troops.

White House spokeswoman Laura Lucas said "the president is still reviewing options from his national security team and has not made a decision about the size of a possible U.S. presence after 2014."

Allen retired, citing his wife's health, and declined to be considered for the post of NATO supreme commander. He was cleared of wrongdoing after he was caught up tangentially in the scandal that forced the retirement of former CIA Director David Petraeus, who was discovered to have had an affair with his biographer. Allen now advises Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Middle East peace talks.

Flournoy, now back at the think tank that she helped found, is a former Defense Department undersecretary. She said she believed President Barack Obama would be making the troop announcement soon.

"The internal discussions are making progress, and I think the administration understands the importance of clarifying these details," she said.

Allen also said that knowing the post-2014 troop number would help silence Taliban claims that all U.S. troops are leaving.

"Ultimately the announcement of the decision...makes it more difficult for the Taliban leadership to justify continued struggle," Allen said.

Allen said Pakistan would be more likely to help Afghanistan reconcile with the Taliban leadership that takes shelter in Pakistan's tribal areas, if it knew the size of the U.S. force that would stay on.

Allen and his co-authors acknowledge the U.S. campaign, and the surge of U.S. troops at the start of Obama's first term, did not bring the stability originally hoped for.

"Corruption in Kabul has remained very serious, Pakistan's cooperation with the war effort has been fickle and the enemy has proved quite resilient," the report said.

O'Hanlon added that Afghans need to be told in a nonconfrontational way that if Congress or the international community believes the elections to come in 2014 are corrupt, they won't be willing to keep donating so much money to the country.

The authors acknowledged that the goals Washington originally set for Afghanistan have shrunk from the hoped-for economic and political stability to keeping al-Qaida from using the poor nation as a safe haven.

"While the surge has not achieved everything originally envisioned, the United States can still likely...work with partners to degrade the Taliban-led insurgency and create a strong enough Afghan state to hold the country intact," the report said.

The authors note that in visits to the country, they learned the intelligence community has a bleaker view of the Afghan future than some of the military assessments.

"It was healthy that they acknowledged uncertainty and disagreement rather than trying to impose happy talk or optimistic assessments throughout the military command and intelligence agencies," the report said.

The NFL rewarded the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday with hosting rights for the 2016 championship game, slotting the 50th Super Bowl in the 49ers' high-tech Santa Clara stadium scheduled to open next year.

The league also voted at its spring meetings to give the 2017 game to Houston, which last hosted the big game in 2004.

"After losing a Super Bowl, it feels really good to win a Super Bowl," said 49ers CEO Jed York, whose team lost to Baltimore in the NFL title game in February. "We are so excited to be able to put on the 'Golden Super Bowl' in the Golden State."

The back-to-back, first-ballot votes also sent a message to South Florida that it needs to settle its squabble over renovations at the Miami Dolphins' stadium before it will get a chance to host its 11th Super Bowl.

"I can tell you that I think the stadium is a very import part of any of these proposals. The condition of the stadium is a factor," commissioner Roger Goodell said. "I think it's the stadium, at the end of the day. Their proposal was really quite exciting. I think owners would like to be in Miami. But it's competitive right now."

The 49ers are preparing to begin play in 2014 in what they are billing as the most technologically advanced stadium in the world the first cashless, ticketless venue in NFL championship history, with WiFi capability for 75,000 people. The 2016 Super Bowl will be the first in northern California since the 1985 game at Stanford Stadium.

When Goodell announced the 2016 decision, members of the San Francisco bid committee let out a roar of approval, then toasted each other with champagne. Asked what he believed swayed the owners to vote for San Francisco, York added: "It's the willpower of an entire area that gave an overwhelming push for us."

It was the first time in a decade that a Super Bowl was awarded on the first ballot. York said 25 percent of the proceeds from the game will be donated to fight poverty in the Bay Area.

"The Bay Area has been waiting for a (title) game since 1985. We have a stadium now," said Daniel Lurie, a leader of the San Francisco bid. "We are just thrilled and couldn't be happier about this."

Houston staged the 2004 Super Bowl, which is perhaps best known for Janet Jackson's halftime "wardrobe malfunction." That was just two years after Reliant Stadium opened.

"I think a lot of them just felt like, 'Hey, it's Houston's time,'" Texans owner Robert McNair said. "They knew we could do a good job. From 2004 to '17, that's 13 years. So I agree, I think it's Houston's time."

Miami has hosted 10 of them including the Jets' upset of the Colts in 1969 and is tied with New Orleans for the most. But South Florida got rejected twice after the Florida Legislature did not support financing to renovate Sun Life Stadium a likely backlash over the Marlins' new baseball stadium.

Multibillionaire Dolphins owner Stephen Ross contends $350 million in stadium improvements are badly needed, but he doesn't want to pay for them by himself. Nor does he want a scaled-down renovation of the 26-year-old facility.

"I suspect there's a couple of state reps down in Miami-Dade County where I live who are going to look at this and realize this was a huge mistake," South Florida bid committee chairman Rodney Barreto said. "We had the better bid. I could just look at the body language from the NFL staff. It's a shame. We may not see another Super Bowl for another 10 years."

Ross said South Florida "won't stop trying" to get one.

Next Feb. 2, the game goes outdoors in a cold-weather site for the first time, at MetLife Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands. If that gamble pays off for the NFL, look for other cities in similar climates Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver to bid for future Super Bowls.

The 2015 game will be played in the Phoenix area.

Earlier Tuesday, owners approved a $200 million loan for stadium construction in Atlanta. The multipurpose stadium could cost as much as $1 billion, with team owner Arthur Blank committed to funding most of it. Blank called the decision by the team owners an "important milestone" in moving the project forward. The owners also approved financing for renovations of stadiums in Charlotte and Philadelphia.

Speaking with reporters after the votes, Goodell also said:

The draft will be held between May 8 and May 17 next year because the venue, Radio City Music Hall, is hosting an Easter show in April. He expects the draft will remain in May, with other adjustments to the NFL's calendar, including the dates for the combine and the opening of free agency, to be discussed with the players' union.

A third international game in upcoming seasons could be added now that both games for 2013 in London have sold out.

The Pro Bowl could be moved from Hawaii back to mainland cities after the 2014 game, but will still be held on the Sunday one week before the Super Bowl.

Expanding the playoffs, and cutting two games off the preseason, still are being discussed. A reduced preseason could happen with either the current 16-game regular season or with an 18-game schedule.

Nearly 1.5 million people in China need transplants every year, but only 10,000 can get organs, according to the Health Ministry.

Many of those organs are taken from executed criminals and rights groups say it is often done without their consent - something the government denies, even as it tries to move away from obtaining organs from death-row inmates.

"China has an obvious family hierarchy," Huang Jiefu, who oversees transplants for the ministry, told a news conference when asked whether China could adopt an organ donor card system as practiced in countries like the United States and Britain.

"Every Chinese family has a core figure - be it the grandfather, father or grandmother - and this person has the final say," he said.

In traditional Chinese thought, the body is a sacrosanct gift from your parents not to be defiled, Huang said.

"That's why it won't work without family consent," he said.

However, Huang was optimistic that attitudes were changing, citing a ministry survey that found 70 percent of young people had no problem with organ donation.

China in 2007 banned organ transplants from living donors, except spouses, blood relatives and step or adopted family members, but launched a national system to coordinate donations after death in 2009. The organ shortage has driven a trade in illegal organ trafficking in the country.

Huang repeated that the goal was to reduce reliance on prisoners for organs by 2015, though he did not give any figures and China does not publish its death penalty numbers.

Still, many Chinese believe there is nothing wrong in using the organs of executed prisoners for transplants, he said.

"The legal philosophy of the death penalty is 'an eye for an eye' or 'a life for a life'. The public believes that saving a life is a worthy redemption of a dead prisoner.

"Every organ donation from executed prisoners has written consent from both the individual and the family," added Huang, who is an Australian-trained liver transplant surgeon.

But eventually, China will probably abolish the death penalty, so it will have to develop alternatives, he said.

"Depending on death row inmates for donations will lead China's organ transplants to a dead end."

Rogge told The Associated Press that sports leaders who attended a summit at IOC headquarters in Switzerland concluded that better testing - rather than more tests - is the best way forward in the anti-doping fight.

Drug-testing strategies and the role of the World Anti-Doping Agency were discussed at a meeting of Olympic leaders Tuesday in Lausanne.

While the IOC declined to release details on Tuesday, Rogge said in an interview that all sides agreed on the need for greater unannounced out-of-competition testing.

''There should be more targeted testing with athletes that might be considered as being suspicious,'' he said by telephone. ''Top sports should be targeted more than others because of the effect of doping on their performances, and the prevalence of doping. All of that was discussed and definitely will lead to an implementation.''

IOC officials have expressed concern that, despite the large number of tests carried around the world, the system is failing to catch serious doping offenders.

''Quantitatively, there was no call to do more testing because there is already 250,000 tests a year,'' Rogge said. ''But qualitatively, (there was a call) to make better use of this testing, do more out of competition and definitely more targeting, both of the athletes and the sports.''

Rogge chaired Tuesday's meeting, which was attended by the four vice presidents of the IOC and leaders of international sports federations, national Olympic committees and other key groups.

The main topic was the role of WADA, which some sports bodies complain has gone beyond its mandate and unfairly criticized the federations. The meeting was requested by the summer sports federations in February following public spats between WADA and the International Cycling Union over the Lance Armstrong doping case.

''It was the opportunity for the members of the stakeholders - the NOCs, the IFs, the athletes commissions - to vent their ideas and their feelings,'' Rogge said. ''We decided not to make a press release because these were informal discussions without an official point of view.

''It was a very good atmosphere. People could express their views. I definitely think it will lead to very good collaboration with WADA.''

Pat McQuaid, president of cycling's governing body, and predecessor Hein Verbruggen attended. No WADA representative was invited.

WADA was set up by the IOC in 1999 to lead the global anti-doping fight. The IOC and Olympic movement provide 50 percent of WADA's annual budget.

WADA is due to elect a new president in November, replacing former Australian government minister John Fahey. The new president will be nominated from the Olympic movement.

''We are defining the wish list of the sports movement toward the fight against doping that we are going to give to the new leadership in November,'' Rogge said.

Last week, former WADA president Dick Pound submitted a report to the agency detailing the ineffectiveness of the current drug-testing system.

Despite increased testing and scientific advances to detect more sophisticated substances, Pound said drug cheats are getting away scot-free because of a lack of will among sports organizations, governments and athletes.

The report cited statistics showing that, of 250,000 drug tests per year, less than 1 percent produce positive findings for serious doping substances.
