Pygmalion follows the adventures of phonetics professor Henry Higgins as he attempts to transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a refined lady. The scene in which Eliza appears in high society with the correct accent but no notion of polite conversation is considered one of the funniest in English drama. Like most of Shaw’s work, Pygmalion wins over audiences with wit, a taut morality, and an innate understanding of human relationships.

This volume also includes Major Barbara, which attacks both capitalism and charitable organizations, The Doctor’s Dilemma, a keen-eyed examination of medical morals and malpractice, and Heartbreak House, which exposes the spiritual bankruptcy of the generation responsible for the bloodshed of World War I.

John A. Bertolini is Ellis Professor of the Liberal Arts at Middlebury College, where he teaches dramatic literature, Shakespeare, and film. He has written The Playwrighting Self of Bernard Shaw and articles on Hitchcock, and British and American dramatists. Bertolini also wrote the introduction and notes to the Barnes & Noble Classics edition of Shaw’s Man and Superman and Three Other Plays.

They are the most famous and controversial directors the CIA has ever had—Allen Dulles, Richard Helms, William Colby, and William Casey. Disciples is the story of these dynamic agents and their daring espionage and sabotage in wartime Europe under OSS Director Bill Donovan.

Allen Dulles ran the OSS’s most successful spy operation against the Axis. Bill Casey organized dangerous missions to penetrate Nazi Germany. Bill Colby led OSS commando raids behind the lines in occupied France and Norway. Richard Helms mounted risky intelligence programs against the Russians in the ruin of Berlin after the German surrender.

Four very different men, they later led (or misled) the successor CIA. Dulles launched the calamitous operation to land CIA-trained, anti-Castro guerrillas at Cuba’s Bay of Pigs. Helms was convicted of lying to Congress about the CIA’s effort to oust Chile’s president. Colby would become a pariah for releasing to Congress what became known as the “Family Jewels” report on CIA misdeeds during the 1950s, sixties and early seventies. Casey would nearly bring down the CIA—and Ronald Reagan’s presidency—from a scheme to secretly supply Nicaragua’s contras with money raked off from the sale of arms to Iran for American hostages in Beirut.

Mining thousands of once-secret World War II documents and interviewing scores of family members and CIA colleagues, Waller has written a brilliant successor to Wild Bill Donovan.

Journalist Waller follows his 2011 biography, Wild Bill Donovan, with an examination of the WWII exploits of the four men who would later be the CIA’s most influential leaders during the Cold War: Allen Dulles, William Colby, Richard Helms, and William Casey. All four men had entered the world of espionage as members of the CIA’s WWII predecessor, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and Waller’s meticulously researched work details their time there under Donovan’s tutelage. Waller begins with short chapters on each man, tracing their lives and identifying their influences and personalities up to WWII. He then follows the four through the war into the occupation of Berlin, noting their disparate personalities and very different private lives along the way. Casey and Helms chiefly served as operational planners and administrators in England; Colby was an airborne commando; and Dulles was the head of American espionage operations in Switzerland. Waller makes a strong case that their experiences under Donovan strongly influenced them during their tenures as CIA director. Waller’s easygoing writing style and extensive use of primary sources make this work worthwhile for those interested in espionage history, but the lack of action will limit its appeal to general readers.
