アメリカで何か新しいことが分かった時に「You learn something new everyday」（「毎日何か新しい発見がありますね。」）と言うことがある。分かったことは自分の想定外であることを伝えながら、どのように知識が豊富の方にも分からないことがあると強調する表現です。私は今日、その表現を少し変更して、「You find something new everyday, if you look.」と言いたいところ。それは少し前の出来事によって浮かんだ思いだった。

In the US, sometimes you hear people say "You learn something new everyday." It conveys not only the idea that the person learned something he or she did not expect, but also emphasizes the fact that no matter how knowledgeable you are, there is always something that you don't know. But today, I would like to modify the expression a little bit and say "You find something new everyday, if you look." This is an idea that came to me because of something that happened recently.

ある日の朝、最近発見した美味しいカフェへ朝食を食べに行った。五反田駅の周辺の中に自分が行ったことのないエリアだった。そのため、朝食の後少し散歩をすることにした。そして、ある道を歩いたら、右に素敵なマンションがあって、左には階段があった。但し、階段の上に何があるか見えなかった。マンションの名前に「池田山公園」が付いているため、階段の上にその公園があるだろうと思った。ブラブラの散歩だったから公園に入りたくなって、階段に登ったら予想通り公園があった。まず、下記の木が目にした。

It started one morning when I went to a delicious cafe that I recently found for breakfast. It was in an area around Gotanda Station where I had not been before. So I decided to take a walk afterwards. When I entered this street, I saw a lovely apartment building on my right, and a staircase on my left. But I could not see what was there at the top of the stairs. Since the name of the apartment building includes "Ikedayama Park," I assumed it was the park on the opposite side. Since it was a stroll with no predefined route, I decided to climb the stairs and found that indeed it was a park at the top. The first thing that came into view was this tree.

日本の秋に同時に緑、黄色、オレンジ色、赤色を見えることは珍しくない。でも、一つの木に全ての色が付いているのは、自分にとって初めての光景だった。説明するパネルによって、それは「ヤマモミジ」という木で、日の当たりによって様々な色に染まるそうだ。「なるほど」と、思った。

While it is not uncommon to see fall color in Japan consisting of all of green, yellow, orange and red colors, it was the first time I saw a single tree displaying all those colors. According to the description on the accompanying panel, the tree is known as "Yama-momij," and the leaves take on different colors depending on how sunlight strikes. "Indeed!" so I thought.

その公園の紅葉は綺麗だったが、公園自体は小さくて地味でちょっとがっかりした気持ち。そして、右の出口から出て、左の先に何があるか見えなかったが、良さそうなので道を進んだ。５０メトルを歩いたら左に何かの入り口が現れて、近づいたら池田山公園であることが分かった。「なるほど。池田山公園は先のではなくここであるんだ！」

The fall color in the park was beautiful. But the park itself was small and vanilla. I then exited the park on the right, and decided to go left because it felt like there was something interesting ahead, even though I could not see exactly what lied ahead. After about 50 yards, an entrance emerged. When I got closer, I realized that it was Ikedayama Park. "I see. So THIS is Ikedayama Park, not where I was before!"

そういう風に、見てみる発想があって覗いたら素敵な発見があった。「You find something new everyday, if you look」ということだった。

That was a good example of "You find something new everyday, if you look." And it was something wonderful.

池田山公園は庭園だ。小さいけど、日本庭園の要素が揃った - 池、橋、灯籠、涼亭、木。それから、近所の方しか来ないようなので、空いていて、ゆったりと自然を楽しむことができる。そこで、少しでも都会の賑やかさから離れて紅葉を満喫した。

Ikedayama Park is a Japanese garden. Althought it is small, it has all the basic elements of a Japanese garden - pond, bridge, stone lantern, trees. Also, because it seems to be visited only by residents from the neighborhood, it has few people and so you can enjoy nature there at a leisurely pace. As a result, I was able to part from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, albeit briefly, to really appreciate fall color.

池田山を散歩した後、最近できた渋谷ストリームというショッピングセンターに遊びに行った。そこで出会った新しいものは、柚子胡椒味のロブスターサンドイッチ。

After my walk in Ikedayama, I decided to swing over to the newly opened shopping center known as Shibuya Stream. The something new that I found there was a lobster sub with yuzu-kosho flavor. (Yuzu-kosho is a condiment made of skin of yuzu, a Japanese citrus, and chili pepper.)

最近、これまで書いたブログをアーカイブすることを決めた。この４年間一回でもブログを書かなかったですが、２０１０年にブログを始めてから４年間に渡って書いたものを保存する価値があると思って、そういう決定に至った。昔のブログを拾い読みしながら、ブログは自分に起こった出来事を記録するだけではなく、その時の思いも込めたため、将来振り返る時にいい参考材料になると再び感じました。だから、ブログの書くを再開する。

I recently decided to archive the blog that I have written up to this point. Although I did not blog even once in the last 4 years, I thought that what I had written in the 4 years since I started blogging in 2010 was worth preserving. While browsing through old entries of my blog, it once again struck me that a blog is not only a record of what has happened in my life, but also a collection of my thoughts, which makes it a valuable reference when I look back on my life in the future. That is why I decided to start blogging again.

今は秋の最中なので、ブログ再開の最初の記事は紅葉の話。紅葉の文字通りの意味は赤い葉っぱだけど、日本の紅葉は赤い葉っぱに限らないでしょう。オレンジ色は多くないが、東京ではイチョウの黄色も眩しい程度溢れるでしょう。イチョウ並木を言うと多分最初思い浮かぶのは外苑前かもしれないが、自分にとっては昭和記念公園のイチョウ並木の方が気に入る。昭和記念公園は都心からちょっと離れるため、外苑前のように混雑ではなくても、もう少し落ち着く環境の中で紅葉を楽しみたいので、平日に行ってきた。

Since we are now in the middle of fall, I am going to write about fall color in this first piece of my blogging reboot. In Japanese the expression for fall color is 紅葉, which literally means "red leaves." But fall color in Japan is more than red. While orange color is not that common, yellow color from gingko trees is so abundant in Tokyo it dazzles. While there are many streets lined with gingko trees in Tokyo, what comes to mind first for most people is probably the one in Gaien-mae. Yet, the one in Showa-kinen Park is more to my liking. Being a bit removed from the center of Tokyo, it does not get as crowded as Gaien-mae. Still, I decided to visit during the week so I could enjoy it in a more relaxed setting.

公園の入り口から改札までゆっくりと歩く１０分の間、ずっとヘリコプターの音がしていて、音の元に向いて見たら、この空中に停止しているヘリが目にした。何をしているかさっぱり分からなかった。

In the 10 minutes when I slowly strolled from the entrance of the park to the ticket gate, there was this constant helicopter noise. When I turned to the source of the noise, I found this hovering helicopter. I couldn't figure out what it was trying to do by hovering there for more than 10 minutes.

昭和記念公園のイチョウは４列に並んで真ん中にある水道を挟む。水道の頭に西洋風の噴水がある。

The gingko trees in Showa-kinen Park are lined up in 4 rows, with a waterway sandwiched in between. At the far end lies a western style fountain from where the water flows.

日差しの強い日なので、イチョウの葉っぱは黄金の色のように見えて綺麗だった。

Under the intense sunlight, the leaves of the gingko trees turned golden and looked gorgeous.

穏やかな水面が周りの景色と空を鏡のように綺麗に映すため、池や水道などは庭園に不可欠だと、いつも思う。この日、並んでる黄金の色と青空が側に並行する水道に映った絶景に魅惑されて、再びそう感じた。

Since calm water surface beautifully reflects the surrounding scenery and the sky like a polished mirror, I always think that ponds and streams and such are essentail to a garden. It could not be more true on this day with this mesmerizing and breathtaking reflection of a row of golden leaves off the waterway running alongside.

黄金の水面を見ると、大昔の映画のタイトルの"On Golden Pond"（日本語のタイトルは「黄昏」）が思い浮かんだ。特にその映画と関係がなくて、目の前に本物の「黄金の池」が現れただけ。

Seeing this golden water surface made me think of the old movie title "On Golden Pond." Not that I thought it had something to do with the movie, it was simply because literally a golden pond appeared in front of me.

この日の主役はイチョウ並木だったけど、奥にある噴水も重要なバイプレーヤーだったと思う。

Although the leading role on this day was played by the gingko trees, the fountain played an important supporting role as well, in my opinion.

黄色葉っぱを観賞した後、急いで1.7kmで離れる日本庭園へ赤い葉っぱを見に行った。

After enjoying yellow leaves, I rushed over to the Japanese garden 1.7km away to view red leaves as well.

涼亭から見た窓枠にはめる紅葉の景色は素晴らしかった。

The fall color scenery framed by a row of window frames of a pavillion was simply gorgeous.

日本庭園の池の反射も見事だった。

The reflection off the pond of the Japanese garden was equally awesome.

公園を出たところ、側にある丘の上に人が集まっていることに気がついて、高いところによって違う観点からの景色を見てみたいので丘を登った。振り返って見たら夕方のこの富士山の素敵な姿が現れた。丘を登って良かった。都心に高層ビルが多いため、東京から富士山を見るために高いところに登って水平な視線で見るのは普通。ここからはちょっと下からの視線だから富士山はもう少し壮大に見える。いい場所を見つけた!

Just when I was leaving the park, I noticed this crowd gathering on top of a small hill on the side. I thought I might be able to see a different scenery from an elevated location and a different perspective, so I climbed the hill. When I looked back, I was treated to this fabulous evening view of Mount Fuji. Since there are lots of high rises in Tokyo city center, if you want to see Mount Fuji you usually have to go high and look at it at a roughly horizontal angle. But here you look a little bit up so it makes Mount Fuji look more grand. I am glad to have found this place.

こういう風に、黄葉、紅葉そして夕方の富士山の姿を見て、この日の最後まで満喫した。やっはり東京が好きだ。

So on this day, I was able to enjoy the day until the very end, viewing yellow leaves, red leaves, and then the evening beauty of Mount Fuji. This is why I love Tokyo!
