<![CDATA[ <p>30分ばかりしてから急に誰かに会いたくなった。</p><p>After thirty minutes or so I　got a sudden craving for company.</p><br><p>　[craving]は名詞で「切望」・・・</p><p>　動詞形は[crave]　 May　I　crave a cigarette?　（タバコを一本いただけませんか？）</p><p>　[company]は普通は「会社」だが、「仲間」という意味も持つ。</p><br><br><p>海ばかり見ていると人に会いたくなるし、人ばかり見ていると海が見たくなる。</p><p>You keep looking at the sea and you start to miss being with people.</p><p>You stay  around people all the time and you just want to go look at the sea.</p><br><br><p>彼女の口調には僕を苛立たせる何かがあった。もっともそれを別にすれば、彼女は僕を</p><p>少しばかり懐かしい気持ちにさせた。</p><p>There was someting in her voice that irritated me.</p><p>Aside from that, though, the whole situation with her took me back years,</p><p>had me feeling positively nostalgic.</p><br><p>　[irritate]は動詞で「イライラさせる」</p><p>　[aside from]は「〰からそれて」</p><p>　[take AB]は「AをBに連れていく」・・・英作文では重要。</p><p>　[have AB]は「AにBをさせる」はめちゃくちゃ大事。</p><p>　[nostalgic]は形容詞で「懐かしい」</p><br><br><p>もっとごく当たり前の状況でめぐりあえたとしたら、僕たちはもう少し楽しい時間を過ごせたかもしれない。</p><p>If we had met under better, more straightforward circumstances,</p><p>something pleasant might have come of this.</p><br><p>　過去に起こった悪い出来事に対して「もしも良かったら・・・」と仮定する仮定法の過去完了刑です。</p><p>　（過去に起こった良い出来事に対して「もしも悪かったら・・・」でも同じ）</p><p>　[if S had 過去分詞, S　would （could / might）　have 過去分詞]</p><p>　（例）　もしこの薬を飲んでいれば、元気になっていたのに。</p><p>　　　　　If you had taken this medicine, you would have recovered.</p><p>　[straightforward]は形容詞で「正直な、まっすぐな」</p><br><br>

<![CDATA[ <p>文明とは伝達であると彼は言った。</p><p>Civilization means transmission, he said.</p><br><p>　[civilization]は名詞で「文明」・・・[modern civilization]で現代文明</p><p>　[transmission]は名詞で「伝達」</p><br><br><p>もし何かを表現できなければ、それは存在しないのも同じだ。</p><p>Whatever can't be expressed might be as well not exist.</p><br><p>　[whatever]は「ものごとは何でも」・・・</p><p>　ただ、「どんなことが〰だろうとも・・・」＝no matter what〰も重要表現です。</p><p>　Whatever you are, you are my friend. （あなたがどんな人でも、あなたは私の友達です。）</p><p>　No matter what you are , you are my friend.</p><p>　[as well]は副詞句で「同じ」</p><br><br><p>医者の言ったことは正しい。文明とは伝達である。</p><p>The doctor is right about what he said.</p><p>Cvilization is transmission.</p><br><br><p>表現し、伝達することがなくなったとき文明は終わる。</p><p>Ｗhen things that should be expressed and transmitted get lost,</p><p>civilization itself comes to an end.</p><br><p>　[that should be expressed and transmitted]は直前のthingsを修飾する導入部分なので</p><p>　省略して文を見てあげると文の構造が見やすくなる。</p><p>　[itself]は再帰代名詞で、「それ自身」という意味。この文では[civilization itself]と</p><p>　書くことでcivilizationを強調している。この強調の再帰代名詞「〰self」は重要。</p><p>　He himself should do his homework. （彼が（彼の力で）宿題をやらなければならない）</p><br><br><p> </p>

<![CDATA[ <p>場面は僕が幼少期の自分を振り返っているところ</p><br><p>小さい頃、僕はひどく無口な少年だった。</p><p>I　was a terribly quiet boy when I was a little.</p><p>　</p><p>[terribly]は副詞で「ひどく」</p><br><br><p>両親は心配して、僕を知り合いの精神科医の家に連れて行った。</p><p>My parents were so worried [that] they dragged me off to see a psychologist friend of theirs.</p><br><p>　[worry]は動詞で自動詞なら「心配する」、他動詞なら「心配させる」だが、</p><p>　受け身で[be worried that〰]で「〰を心配する」が英作文では便利だと思います。</p><p>　「不安に思う」の形容詞[anxious]で表現する場合は[anxious for〰]を使います。</p><p>　（例）　I　am anxious for the result of my son's test. </p><p>　[drag]は動詞で他動詞なら「引きずる」、自動詞なら「引きずられる」</p><p>　[drag off]は「無理やり引っ張っていく」</p><p>　[psychologist]は「心理学者、精神科医」</p><br><br><p>昔ね、あるところにとても人の良い山羊がいたんだ。</p><p> Once, long ago, there was a friendly billy goat.</p><br><br><p>山羊はいつも重い金時計を首から下げて、ふうふう言いながら歩き回っていたんだ。</p><p>Now the billy goat always wore a heavy gold watch around his neck,</p><p>and he huffed and puffed just walking around.</p><br><p>　[huff][puff]は動詞で「息を切らす」</p><br><br><p>ところがその時計はやたらに重いうえに壊れて動かなかった。</p><p>Yet not only was the watch real heavy, it didn't even work.</p><br><p>　[yet]は副詞で否定文をともない「まだ〰していない」が代表的な使い方だと思いますが、</p><p>　本文では接続しとして使用し、「けれども」で使用している。＝but, however</p><p>　[not only was the watch real heavy]は倒置の形になっていて、本来は</p><p>　[the watch was not only real heavy]です。</p><p>　[even]は副詞で強調です。</p><p>　[work]は動詞で「動く」の意味を表しますが、英作文では重要な単語です。</p><p>　（例）　this radio doesn't work.　（このラジオは動かないです。）のように使います。</p><p>　意外と書けなかったりするので要注意です。</p><br><br><p>そこに友達の兎がやってきてこう言った。</p><p>Just then his pal, the rabbit came by and said</p><br><p>　[pal]は名詞で「友達」</p><br><br><p>ねえ山羊さん、なぜ君は動きもしない時計をいつもぶらさげてるの？</p><p>Say, Billy, why do you always wear that busted watch aroud your neck?</p><br><p>　[bust]は動詞で「壊れる」・・・相当頻度の低い動詞です・・・brokenが簡単で良いと思います。</p><br><br><p>重そうだし、役にも立たないじゃないか。</p><p>It sure lookes like a clunker, and I bet it doesn't give you any good.</p><br><p>　[sure]は副詞で「間違いなく」</p><p>　[bet]は動詞で「賭ける」もしくは「確信をもって賭ける」</p><br><br><p>そりゃ、重いさと山羊は言った。</p><p>It is heavy all right. said billy goat.</p><br><br><p>でもね、慣れちゃったんだ。時計が重いのにも、動かないのにも。</p><p>but, I am used to it.</p><p>Both it is  weighing a lot and it is  not working.</p><br><p>　[weigh]は動詞で他動詞なら「重さを計る」自動詞なら「重さが・・・である」</p><p>　How much does the percel weigh？「その小包の重さはどれくらいですか？）</p><p>　It weighs 300g.</p><p>　[weight]は名詞で「重さ」　gain や　lost を伴って、体重が増えた、減ったになる。</p><br><br><p>ある日、山羊さんの誕生日に兎はきれいなリボンのかかった小さな箱をプレゼントした。</p><p>One day, the rabbit brought the billy goat a small box tied with a ribbon for his birthday.</p><br><p> [tie]は動詞で「結ぶ」</p><br><br><p>それは、キラキラ輝いて、とても軽く、しかも正確に動く新しい時計だったんだ。</p><p>The present turned out to be a brand-new watch,</p><p>all bright and shiny, right, and keeping good time.</p><br><p>　[turn out]は「分かる」</p><p>　[brand-new]は「新しい」</p><p>　[keep good time]は「正確に動く（時計）」で、「この時計は正確に動かない」は</p><p>　The watch doesn't keep good time. で簡単に表現できます。</p><br><p>山羊さんはとっても喜んでそれを首にかけ、みんなに見せて回ったのさ。</p><p>The billy goat was so happy and he hung the watch about his neck and went around showing it to everyone.</p><br><br><p>君が山羊、僕が兎、時計は君の心さ　（先生のセリフ・・・君は「僕」で僕は「先生」を指している）</p><p>You are the billy goat and I am the rabbit and the wach is your mind.</p><br>

<![CDATA[ <p>僕と鼠のやりとりパート１</p><br><p>鼠はおそろしく本を読まない。</p><p>The Rat was horribly unread.</p><br><p>　[horribly]は副詞で「おそろしく」・・・形容詞は[horrible]で[terrible]よりも意味が強い。</p><p>　[unread]は形容詞で「読まれていない（書物）、読書しない（人）」</p><br><br><p>彼がスポーツ新聞とダイレクトメール以外の活字を読んでいるところにお目にかかったことはない。</p><p>I　never saw him read anything except a sports paper or a direct mail flier.</p><br><p>　[see　+　 人・物　+　動詞の原形・分詞]　は重要な形で「人・物が〰するのを見る」</p><p>　（例）　私は彼がギターを弾くのを見た。</p><p>　　　　　I　saw him play the guitar.</p><p>　　　　　I　saw him playing the guitar.</p><br><p>　同様の形をとる[hear]や[feel]は重要です。（知覚動詞です）</p><p>　（例）　私は、銃声を聞いた。</p><p>　　　　　I　heard a gun fired.</p><p>　（例）　私は、その車が失速したと感じました。</p><p>　　　　　I　felt the car lost its power.</p><p>　[except]は前置詞で「〰を除いて」・・・anyやeveryと相性が良いと思います。</p><p>　everyone except me knows it.　（私以外の全員がそれを知っている。）</p><p>　[flier]は名詞で「チラシ」</p><br><p>僕が時折時間つぶしに読んでいる本を、彼はいつもまるで蠅が蠅叩きを眺めるように</p><p>物珍しそうにのぞきこんだ。</p><p>when I　would be reading to kill time,</p><p>he would peer at the book as puzzled as a fly looking at a fly swatter.</p><br><p>　[puzzle]は規則動詞で「困らせる」（自動詞なら「困っている」）だが、</p><p>　ここはas〰asの比較の形になっているので[puzzled]は形容詞で「困惑した」</p><p>　[as〰as]は「同じくらい〰だ」</p><p>　したがって、この本文は、</p><p>　「彼は、蠅が蠅叩きを眺めるのと同じくらい困惑した様子でその本をのぞきこんだ。」が直訳。</p><p>　[swat]は動詞で「ぴしゃりと打つ」・・・多分、英検1級レベルじゃないかと・・・。</p><p> </p><br><p>「何故、本なんて読む？」</p><p>Why do you read books?</p><br><br><p>「フローベルがもう死んじまった人間だからさ。」</p><p>Because Flaubert is dead and gone, that is why.</p><br><br><p>「生きてる作家の本は読まない？」</p><p>You don't read books written by living authors?</p><br><br><p>「生きてる作家になんてなんの価値もないよ。」</p><p>nothing of value in living authors.</p><br><br><p>「死んだ人間に対しては大抵のことが許せそうな気がするんだな。」</p><p>When people are dead,</p><p>you can forgive them for　most anything.</p><br><p>　[forgive]は動詞で「許す」</p><p>　I forgive him for breaking his promise.</p><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>

<![CDATA[ <p>場面は、僕と鼠の出会いが描かれているところです。</p><br><br><p>僕が鼠と初めて出会ったのは3年前の春のことだった。</p><p>I　first met the Rat three years before in the spring.</p><br><p>　[firsr]は、形容詞、副詞、名詞の３つの役割を持ちます。</p><p>　この文では副詞として使用されていますが、</p><p>　[first]を形容詞として使い、it is my first time to〰　や　for the first time to〰　</p><p>　は英作文でよく使う気がします。</p><p>　　（例）　私は、今年初めてアメリカを訪れた。</p><p>　　　　　　I　visited the united states for the first time　this year.</p><p>　　（例） 私は、今年10年ぶりにアメリカを訪れた。</p><p>　　　　　 I　visited the united states for the first time in 10 years this year.</p><br><br><p>それは僕たちが大学に入った年で、2人ともずいぶん酔っぱらっていた。</p><p>we had both entered university that year,</p><p>and the two of us had gotten pretty bombed.</p><br><p>  [both]は、副詞で[both A　and B]で「AもBも両方」で使用するのが、</p><p> 最もテストに出題されるパターンだと思います。</p><p> また、[not only A　but also B] [A as well as B]で置き換えらることも可能です。</p><p> （例）その本は有益であり、かつ面白い。</p><p> the book is both useful and amusing.</p><p> the book is not only useful but also amusing.</p><p> the book is useful as well as amusing.</p><p> では、「彼は、日本語を話すだけではなく書くことも出来る」は?</p><p> →文章中で副詞の置かれる位置（助動詞の後、一般動詞の前）を考えることが大切な気がします。</p><p> 　He can both speak and write Japanese.</p><p> [pretty]は副詞で「とても」</p><p> [bombed]は形容詞で「酔っぱらった」・・・難しい単語だと思いました。</p><p> 酔っぱらうは[get drunk]が簡単だと思います。</p><p> He got drunk yesterday night.</p><br><br><p>だから、いったいどんな事情で僕たちが朝の4時過ぎに鼠の車に乗り合わせる羽目に</p><p>なったのかまるで記憶がない。</p><p>so I　have absolutely no recollection what could possibly have thrown us together </p><p>for that ride after four in the morning in the Rat's car.</p><br><p>　[absolutely]は副詞で「全く」</p><p>　[recollection]は名詞で「思い出すこと」・・・memoryより堅い言葉です。</p><p>　[recollect]は動詞で「思い出す」・・・ただ、「思い出す」はrememberの方が簡単だと思います。</p><p>　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　（意外と「思い出す」でrememberが出てこないんですよね（泣））</p><p>　[throw together]で「偶然に会わせる」</p><br><br><p>「俺のことは鼠って呼んでくれ。」</p><p>You can call me `Rat`.</p><br><p>　[call A　B]で「AをBと呼ぶ」</p><br><br><p>「なぜそんな名前がついたんだ？」</p><p>how did you get the name?</p><br><br><p>「忘れたね。随分昔のことさ。初めのうちはそう呼ばれると嫌な気もしたがね、</p><p>今じゃなんともない。何にだってなれちまうもんさ。」</p><p>I　forget.</p><p> Goes a long way back. </p><p>At first , I　really hated being called that , but now I　don't even think about it.</p><p>You get used to anything.</p><br><p>[get used to〰]もしくは[be used to〰]は「〰に慣れる。慣れている。」でとても重要だと思います。</p><p> </p><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>

<![CDATA[ <p>「正直に語ることはひどくむずかしい。僕が正直になろうとすればするほど、</p><p>正確な言葉は闇の奥深くへと沈みこんでいく。」</p><p>It is awfully hard to tell things  honestly.</p><p>The more honest I　try to be,</p><p>the more the right words recede into the distance.</p><br><p> [awfully]は副詞で「とても」＝very </p><p>  （例）she is awfully kind to me.</p><p> [the 比較級〰,the 比較級〰]は、「〰であればあるほど、〰になる」</p><p>  （例）　the more people need it , the more expensive its price is.</p><p> [recede]は動詞で「徐々に後退する」　反意語は[proceed]</p><p>　（試験でよく目にするのはproceedのような気がします。）</p><p> [distance]は名詞で「距離」だが、「遠距離」を表すにも使う。</p><p> [in the distance]はで覚える。</p><p>　（例）I　saw the town in the distance.（遠くに町が見えた。）</p><br><p>・・・場面は変わって、ジェイズ・バーで鼠が僕に金持ちに対する自分の考えを語るシーンから。</p><br><p>「なぜ金持ちが嫌いだと思う？」</p><p>why do you think I　can not stand rich people?</p><br><p> [stand]は自動詞で使う場合は「立っている」だが、</p><p>　　　　　他動詞で使う場合は「我慢する」という意味を持つ。＝bear・・・standは口語的な表現。</p><p>  （例）　I　can not stand to wait for three hours.</p><br><p>「金持ちなんて何も考えてないからさ。」</p><p>it is because the rich do not bother to figure out anything.</p><br><p>　[the 形容詞]で「〰な人」・・・[the young] [the poor]などが代表的。</p><p>　[bother]は動詞で「悩む」</p><p>　[figure out]は動詞句で「分かる」</p><p>　ただ、シンプルに[the rich do not think anything.]でも良い気がしますが・・・。ダメですか？</p><br><p>「奴らは大事なことはなにも考えない。考えているフリをしているだけさ。」</p><p>they  do not have a worthwhile thought in their heads,</p><p>they only  pretend to think.</p><br><p>　[worthwhile]は形容詞で「価値のある」</p><p>　　they do not have a worthwhile thought in their heads.</p><p>　　彼らは価値のある考えを持っていないが直訳になる。</p><p>　[pretend]は動詞で「フリをする」・・・[pretend to〰]で覚える。</p><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>

<![CDATA[ <p>私の好きな村上春樹さんの『風の歌を聴け』で英語を楽しく</p><p>勉強できたらいいなと思い、Ａlfred Birnbaum訳のバイリンガルブックを購入</p><p>しました。nativ独特の表現が多くて難しいところもたくさんありますが、</p><p>あの乾いた空気感のようなものが英語でも伝わってきてとても面白かったです。</p><br><p>「完璧な文章などといったものは存在しない。完璧な絶望が存在しないようにね。」</p><p>Ｔhere is no such thing as perfect　writing. </p><p>Ｊust like there is no such thing as perfect despair.</p><br><p>　[as]は「〰としての」・・・[there is no such thing as 〰]で「〰といったものは存在しない。」</p><p>　[just]は強調</p><p>　[like]は接続詞として使われ「〰と同じように」</p><p>　[despair]は名詞だと「絶望」、動詞だと[despair of 〰]で「絶望する」</p><p>　　（例）　I　despair of the future.</p><br><br><p>「僕が大学生のころ偶然に知り合ったある作家は僕に向かってそう言った。」</p><p>A　writer I chanced to meet when　I　was in university told me this onve.</p><br><p>　[chance to 〰]は「偶然〰する」・・・この場合は[chance]が動詞として使われているが、</p><p>　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　名詞「偶然」で使っても[by chance]で表現が可能 </p><p>　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　（例）　I　met him by chance.</p><br><br><p>「僕がその本当の意味を理解できたのは、ずっと後のことだった。」</p><p>It was only much later that I　caught on to the real meaning of those word.</p><br><p> [only]も[much]も強調</p><p> [It was later that 〰]の[it]は[that〰]の形式主語</p><p> [catch on　to〰]は「理解する」・・・[catch]の何かを掴むイメージが大切</p><p>  （例）　I　did not catch on to what she said.　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　</p><br><br><p>このように私の好きな部分で、なおかつnativeでなくても無理なく日常で使えそうな</p><p>部分を紹介出来ればいいなと思っています。</p><br><br><br><br><br><br>
