　「厚かましくも･･･する」という意味で、have the gall toとも言います。

次のような例文が挙げられていました。

　He had the audacity to ask me to cover up his mistake.

■ late comer

「対応の遅い人」、「遅参者」という意味です。

■ come under increasing pressure to

「･･･することを益々迫られる」という意味です。

次のような例文が挙げられていました。

The company is under increasing pressure to offer next day delivery because of fast Internet services.

■ top the list

「首位を占める」という意味で、次のような例文が挙げられていました。

Customer service tops the list of things we need to improve.

■ stand out in the crowd

　「ひときわ目立つ」という意味で、単に stand outでも同じ意味になります。

　次のような例文が挙げられていました。

　　Company X stands out from the crowd due to its low prices.

　口語で「全く苛立たしいですね。」という意味です。

■ beyond someone's control

　「不可抗力の」、「やむを得ない」という意味です。

■ seasoned

「経験豊かな」という意味で、have a lot of experience or knowledge in a certain areaということです。

■ steer clear of

「･･･を避ける」という意味で、avoidや keep away fromと同義です。

次のような例文が挙げられていました。

Steer clear of her today. She is in a bad mood.

■ get swindled

「騙される」という意味で、be cheated out of moneyということです。.

swindlerは「騙す人（詐欺師）」を意味します。

　I give her credit for honestly admitting her mistake.

■ spill

「こぼすこと」という意味の名詞です。

■ better safe than sorry

「用心するに越したことはありません。（転ばぬ先の杖）」という意味です。

■ flight to nowhere

　「どこにも行かない（当てのない）フライト」という意味です。

■ sudden turn for the worse

「突然の悪化」という意味です。

「時差ボケ」という意味です。jet lagged（時差ボケで）という表現もあります。

「両行続きで疲れ切った」という意味で、この場合のravageは「荒廃させる」という意味になります。

また、time-ravagedといえば、「時の経過でボロボロになった」という意味になります。

■　We've been there at one time or another.

　「私たちは皆、かつてそんな経験をしてきました」という意味です。

■ plead guilty

「罪を認める」という意味で、confess to some wrong doing in a courtということです。

■ hardcore road warrior

「筋金入りの出張者」という意味です。

■ bump

「障害」、「突起」という意味で、obstacle や difficultyと同義です。

■ along the way

「途中で」という意味です。

■ deep in the middle of nowhere

「人里離れた奥地の」という意味で、同様の意味でmiles from nowhereやat the end of nowhereがあります。

「災難」、「災い」という意味で、やや古めかしい響きがあります。

■ one's heart goes out to

「･･･に同情する」、「･･･を気の毒に思う」という意味です。

なお、out of whackあるいはout of killerは「調子が悪い」という意味です。

「相当なパニック状態に陥る」 という意味です。

口語で「その通りです」という意味です。

「きとんとした服装」という意味で、decentはadequateやappropriateなどと同義です。

「人を安心させる」という意味です。

一方、feel at easeといえば、「リラックス」しているという意味になります。

■　shoot off questions

「立て続けに質問を投げかける」という意味です。

shoot offを使った他の表現としては、shoot off one's mouthやshoot one's mouth off

があり、「しゃべりまくる」という意味です。

■ level playing field

「同じ土俵」、「対等の立場」という意味です。

■ of one’s own will

「自分の自由意思で」、「自主的に」という意味です。

■ something along the lines of

「･･･に沿ったもの」という意味で、次のような例文が挙げられていました。

He said something along the lines of I want the log to be more dramatic.

「洗練された服装[装い]をする」という意味です。

一方、dress downと言えば、「カジュアルな服装をする」という意味になります。

■ project an air of connfidence

　「自信のある様子を打ち出す」という意味です。

be staring someone in the faceといえば、「明らかである」という意味になります。次のような例文が挙げられていました。

The solution to our work delays is staring them in the face.

（仕事の遅れに対する解決策は明らかだ。）

Company X stared bankruptcy in the face last year.

■ demonstration of courtesy

「礼儀を示す行為」という意味です。

pay someone the courtesy of･･･という表現もあります。

■ go-to

　「主力の」、「頼りになる」という意味で、go-to guyは「頼りになる奴」という意味です。

■ opening line

「出だしの文句」、「話のきっかけの言葉」という意味です。

■ get stumped

「途方に暮れる」、「当惑する」という意味です。

■ pleasantries

「あいさつ」、「社交辞令」という意味です。

フランス語で「過ち」、「無礼」の意味です。

「当初に」という意味です。

■ time-honored ritual

「昔からの儀式」という意味で、time-honoredの代わりにlong-standingを用いることもできます。

但し、long-standingの場合は、必ずしも良い意味で用いられるとは限りません。

■ lull in the conversation

「会話の途切れ（切れ間）」の意味です。

次のような例文が挙げられていました。

また、lullは動詞として、sooth someone to sleepという意味で用いられます。

次のような例文が挙げられていました。

The sound of the ocean lulled him to sleep.

■ off-putting

「不快な」、「反感を覚えさせる」という意味です。

■ pitch

動詞で「売り込む」、「宣伝する」という意味で、名詞では「売込口上」（sales pitch）のような表現があります。

■ snake oil

「インチキ薬」（fake medicine）、「あてにならない話」という意味です。

■ rapport

フランス語で「（調和した）人間関係」という意味です。

■ Don't sweat it.

「気にすることはない」、「心配無用」という意味で、Don't worry about it.と同義です。
