This year she was named a scholastic All-American for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Wheeler actually qualified for last years Paralympics, but she wasnt able to compete because there technically wasnt anyone for her to compete with. The Paralympics divides competitors into divisions based on the severity of their physical disabilities.

"I didn't get to make the team because there were no female events for my classification, which is an S1. That's the most disabled you could be and still swim," Wheeler said.

"I like being able to represent my country. That's amazing breaking records and getting medals, but I like being out there as a role model too.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Fast & Furious 6" director Justin Lin doesn't understand why James Franco would ever bad mouth their 2006 collaboration, "Annapolis."

"He's going on publicly about stuff and I honestly don't understand it," Lin told the Huffington Post in an interview published Tuesday. "I think James is a good guy, but I don't know. I wish he would just not say anything."

While promoting "Spring Breakers" in March, Franco referred to Lin's naval academy boxing drama as "a really bad movie." He told Badass Digest that he "ended up not liking the experience and not liking the movie."

Lin, however, sees it differently.

"The crew had a great experience; we were all very young and we were all doing the best we can," Lin said. "And for someone to kind of lay judgment, you know, it is hurtful. And I think it's very disrespectful."

"Annapolis" was a box office flop and slammed by critics when released, but Lin isn't letting those details influence his pride in his work.

"I wish James could keep it to himself because I don't know the point," Lin continued. "We make movies and we all try our best and sometimes we connect with the audience, sometimes we don't."

Lin has connected with audiences through the "Fast and Furious" franchise -- a four-picture gig that began with directing "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift."

Although Lin wasn't able to rejuvenate Universal's racing franchise until directing the fourth installment, "Fast & Furious," Lin recognizes the important role both "Annapolis" and "Tokyo Drift" played in his now-booming career.

"Without 'Annapolis,' I wouldn't have gotten 'Tokyo Drift' - I wouldn't be here today. And, so, it's part of who I am," Lin said. "I will always be proud of it. And for someone to be a big part of that and to publicly go and start talking trash? You know, I just don't think that's cool."

Despite Franco's criticism of both his and Lin's work, they remain on good terms. Still, Lin cites "a respect factor in filmmaking" that Franco ignored when his negative opinion of "Annapolis" was not "kept in the locker room."

"James Franco is not perfect. I'm not perfect. I'm really proud to be here now, but I'm just as equally proud as when that movie opened and nobody would take my call," Lin added. "Because that makes me who I am. And that experience made me who I am. And I would hope it's the same for him as opposed to him judging the rest of us."

LOS ANGELES, May 1, 2013 - As many as 3,000 prison inmates in central California deemed to be at risk from a potentially lethal lung disease may need to be moved to other regions under an order from a court-appointed federal overseer.

The directive, issued on Monday, marks the latest effort to stem cases of valley fever, or coccidioidomycosis, at two prisons where the disease was found to have contributed to the deaths of nearly three dozen inmates from 2006 to 2011.

But it could complicate court-ordered efforts to reduce overcrowding across California's prison system, the nation's largest.

The pneumonia-like illness, contracted by inhaling fungal spores that grow in the dry soils of the American Southwest, is not contagious. But the spores become airborne when soil is disturbed by wind, construction, farming and other activities.

Problems with the disease at two prisons in San Joaquin Valley, the state's agricultural heartland, were documented on Wednesday in court papers filed by J. Clark Kelso, appointed as a federal receiver for medical issues at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Previous attempts to reduce both the number of infections and the severity of cases were ineffective, Kelso's spokeswoman, Joyce Hayhoe, told Reuters.

After a report last year found that problems continued at Pleasant Valley State Prison and Avenal State Prison, Kelso asked correctional officials to stop transferring some inmates there who were considered to be at high risk, Hayhoe said.

Among those deemed to be at higher risk of contracting or dying from the disease were African-Americans, inmates of Filipino heritage, those with compromised immune systems and those who older than 55.

On Monday, Kelso went a step further, directing the state to cease housing inmates who fell into those categories at the two prisons in question, though he stopped short of explicitly ordering those inmates to be transferred out.

On Wednesday, he added diabetics to the list of high-risk inmates, court papers showed. He called the state's response so far "anemic."

'ENORMOUS UNDERTAKING'

Jeffrey Callison, a spokesman for the Corrections Department, acknowledged that the state has not stopped sending at-risk prisoners to the two facilities, nor have any been moved out. Kelso's directive to stop housing vulnerable prisoners in the region came "out of the blue," he said.

Callison said that immediately complying with the receiver's directive "would be an enormous undertaking."

Dr. John Galgiani, a valley fever expert hired by lawyers representing inmates, agreed with the federal receiver and prison officials that no outbreak of the disease had been declared in the San Joaquin Valley.

But in his own court filing, Galgiani said the persistence of the illness in the two prisons amounted to a "medical emergency."

Noting a recent report by Kelso's office, Galgiani said in a court declaration that the infection rate at Pleasant Valley State Prison was "1,000 times the rate for Californians generally." Valley fever was a contributing cause of death in 34 cases between 2006 and 2011 in the two institutions, he wrote.

Symptoms of valley fever include a cough, fever, chest pains and muscle aches that can last for many weeks or months. But fewer than half of infected individuals become sick, and only a small percentage become severely ill.

The disease can be fatal, but the mortality rate among infected patients is about 0.1 percent, said Galgiani, an infectious disease specialist who directs the University of Arizona Valley Fever Center for Excellence.

A recent study found that Valley fever was identified as an underlying or contributing cause to 3,089 U.S. deaths during an 18-year span, from 1990 to 2008.

Those most at risk for life-threatening complications from the illness include the elderly and people with compromised immune systems, Galgiani said.

An estimated 150,000 infections occur in the Southwest each year, the majority of them in Arizona. California accounts for nearly all the remaining cases.

FIRST PERSON | When I was 16, smoking pot and drinking cases of beer were my medication for ADHD -- although I didn't know that's what I had at the time. From what I could tell, ADHD diagnostics didn't commonly exist when I was in high school.

All my friends drank beer and smoked pot. Here in the desert of Midland, Texas, there's practically nothing to do but drink and hit house parties. In school, I could not sit in class and could not understand my assignments, and when there was too much distraction, my mind floated away. I was a straight-A student until I started missing class, and I had high anxiety after that. Throughout my early 20s and 30s, this chaos impacted my work, friends and relationships.

I attended treatment facilities and psychiatric hospitals. Each would make a fresh diagnosis: alcoholism, substance abuse, schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder. I was baffled as to my condition and in turmoil over what would be diagnosed next. When I was 35, after three stints in mental institutions and four in drug rehabilitation centers, I was diagnosed as an adult with ADHD.

I went to a neurologist in Midland, and he asked several questions and included my drug problem and alcohol abuse. He asked if I heard of ADHD. I thought this was a child's problem, I informed him. He gave me a new prescription of Adderall. Finally, at 44, I was sober and taking my medication as prescribed. Since then, I haven't drank or done drugs.

Now at 50, my whole view of life is different. I had to start my life anew, but now, financially and mentally, I'm OK, and I think my life will remain stable. I had to learn how to cope with my new life. I am able to collect my thoughts, and my anxieties are few. My religious belief is strong. My faith in God and prayer is a daily habit for me. (My religious beliefs in God have been with me since childhood, but faith alone in the early years was unlikely to overcome addiction.)

I do understand that I am taking chances with Adderall, which is addictive. But my spiritual recovery is how I live. The medicine is just an aid to help.

LONDON (Reuters) - King Edward VIII may be best known for giving up the throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson, but it wasn't the first time his love affairs posed a threat to the British monarchy.

A new book by British barrister and former judge Andrew Rose unearths a little-known affair with a French courtesan 20 years before Edward's abdication, which ended in a rigged trial at the behest of the British establishment trying to protect a future king's reputation.

"The Prince, The Princess, and The Perfect Murder" details how the then-Prince of Wales's first great love, French courtesan Maggie Meller, blackmailed him to avoid the gallows after murdering her playboy Egyptian prince husband.

Meller was acquitted in a high profile trial at London's Old Bailey in 1923 despite the evidence stacked against her.

Rose said the acquittal was a shock but his research has now revealed an extraordinary story involving the murder trial, a secret cache of vanished letters and a cover-up to save the reputation of the future king.

Six years before her trial, Meller had an affair with the British prince. She used evidence from that relationship to force the royal household to lean on the establishment in an effort to get her off the hook and cover up the scandal, Rose told Reuters.

"This affair had been carefully airbrushed from history so the connection between the murder and the Prince of Wales was never drawn," Rose told Reuters.

"The royal household took steps to make sure that the prince's name did not come out in the trial to protect the reputation of the future king. It is amazing that she got away with it."

Rose's book, published by Coronet this week forms the basis of a TV documentary, "Edward VIII's Murderous Mistress", on Britain's Channel 4 later this month.

The latest book was a follow-on work from Rose's book about the trial, "Scandal at the Savoy", published in 1991.

He was intrigued by Marguerite Alibert, better known as Meller, who, dressed in a Chanel gown, shot her second husband, Egyptian Prince Fahmy Bey, at London's Savoy Hotel in 1923.

COVER UP FOR THE PRINCE

At the time her past reputation as a gold digger was brushed off and the focus was on her claim that she acted in self-defense to protect herself from her abusive husband.

But after his book was released, Meller's grandson contacted Rose, informing him of her affair with the prince, love letters between the two, and a memoir she wrote in 1934.

Rose said it took several years to trace the relationship, accessing unpublished documents in royal archives and private collections but also finding a trail of destroyed documents.

Rose said the prince's involvement came as a surprise but was in character as Edward, who abdicated in 1936 after less than a year on the throne, was a well-known womanizer.

"He was emotionally immature and feckless in his private life ... although he had enormous charm," said Rose.

"But you can be approachable and amusing and also neurotic, self-centered and unreliable. He spent his time chasing woman, had a string of love affairs and was always susceptible particularly to powerful women."

Rose said the prince's protectors were quick to move once Meller was arrested, negotiating with her to return the prince's letters that she had stored in Cairo.

The crucial part of the deal, however, was that she would not mention the prince in court and she stuck to that.

Her promiscuous past was never mentioned in court and the trial instead focused on the violent nature and perverted sexual tastes of her husband.

"Really this was a show trial," said Rose, "The authorities wanted Marguerite to be acquitted. A murder conviction would have been catastrophic for the Crown."

Meller was released and moved back to France where she lived the rest of her life in Paris, dying wealthy in 1971.

"This story really does show another side to Edward and how unsuitable he always was to be king," said Rose.

The ban came as Pakistan's powerful army chief pledged in a rare speech that the military would do everything in its power to ensure the parliamentary election is held as scheduled on May 11, despite the Taliban's attempt to disrupt the vote by attacking candidates.

One of Musharraf's lawyers, Saad Shibli, said he would go to the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling against his client, claiming the former leader should not be singled out for punishment for his actions while in power since others were involved.

"About 500 officials at different levels and institutions were part of Musharraf's actions, and if those actions come under scrutiny, all those people should be involved in this matter," Shibli said.

Judges had previously barred Musharraf from running in the parliamentary election scheduled for May 11. The Peshawar High Court handed down the lifetime ban Tuesday after hearing an appeal by Musharraf's lawyer to allow him to run in the upcoming election.

Musharraf returned to Pakistan in March after four years in self-imposed exile, but his fortunes have gone from bad to worse since he arrived. He is currently under house arrest in connection with a pair of court cases against him.

One involves his decision to fire senior judges, including the chief justice of the Supreme Court, while in power. The other relates to the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007. Government prosecutors have accused Musharraf of being involved allegations he has denied.

Musharraf seized power in a coup in 1999 when he was serving as army chief and ruled for nearly a decade. He stepped down in 2008 because of growing discontent with his rule.

He returned to Pakistan despite Taliban death threats, but was met by only a few thousand people when his plane landed in the southern port city of Karachi. Analysts said the response showed how little public support he enjoyed in the country.

The run-up to next month's parliamentary election has been marred by violence, much of it carried out by the Pakistani Taliban.

On Tuesday, gunmen killed a politician running for a provincial assembly seat in southwestern Baluchistan province in an attack that seemed to be the result of a political rivalry, said local government official Saeed Ahmad.

The Taliban have killed at least 60 people in attacks on candidates and party workers since the beginning of April. Many have targeted secular parties, raising concerns the violence could benefit hard-line Islamic politicians and others who take a softer line toward the militants.

The military plans to deploy troops on election day to provide security. Army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said Tuesday that the soldiers will do everything they can to limit disruptions.

"I assure you, that we stand committed to wholeheartedly assist and support in the conduct of free, fair and peaceful elections to the best of our capabilities and remaining within the confines of the constitution," Kayani said in a televised speech in Urdu marking the day dedicated to fallen soldiers. "This indeed is a golden opportunity, which can usher in an era of true democratic values in the country."

The election marks the first transfer between democratically elected governments in a country that has experienced three military coups since it was founded in 1947.

Kayani insisted that the fight against the Pakistani Taliban was vital for the security of the country, hitting back at critics who have claimed the state is fighting Islamic militants only at the behest of the United States.

"There is no room for doubts when it comes to dealing with rebellion against the state," Kayani said.

The Pakistani Taliban have been waging a bloody insurgency against the government for years, killing thousands of security personnel and civilians. They seek to impose Islamic law and break the alliance with the United States.

"We sincerely desire that all those who have strayed and have picked up arms against the nation return to the national fold," Kayani said. "However, this is only possible once they unconditionally submit to the state, its constitution and the rule of law."
