There was a severe weather warning this morning for Sydney, the Illawarra, South Coast and the Central and Southern Tablelands.

David Rae from the State Emergency Service said gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour were predicted.

"That's still quite dangerous and we're advising residents to stay in doors away from windows, secure loose pieces in people's backyards, veranda's and patios," he said.

Blizzard conditions were set to continue in the New South Wales' Snowy Mountains, with wind gusts up to 120 kph.

SES crews spent the night cleaning up and fixing the damage after yesterday's wild weather brought down trees and damaged roofs.

The Illawarra bore the brunt of the weather system that hit Sydney, the south coast and state's south east.

At one stage, the Bureau of Meteorology recorded winds at 115 kph at Albion Park, south of Sydney.

So far there have been more than 850 calls for help across the state.

Power was cut to over 10,000 properties, particularly in Nowra and Ulladulla.

Integral Energy was working to restore power to about 900 homes.

Endeavour Energy said it had 1,500 homes and businesses without power, most of them between Wollongong and Mollymook.

Police issued a warning for motorists to take care during the unpredictable weather conditions. .

SYDNEY MINES — Graffiti is out of control in two communities on the north side of Sydney Harbour, according to the chairman of the Sydney Mines Heritage Society.

“You’d be scared to stand still in Sydney Mines,” said Jim Tobin. “You’d be spray-painted.”

Tobin said the local museum and fossil centre have been hit by vandalism and businesses along Main Street are covered — front and back — with paint.

“Some people try to justify it as art,” he said during a tour of the community Wednesday. “It's not art, it’s vandalism.”

Tobin said some of the language used goes far beyond any claim to artistic merit.

“I can take you to places in town that would fog up your glasses. And a lot of what you see on the front, it’s worse around the back.”

Funeral homes, the dollar store, a bakery and doctors’ offices all show signs of tagging that has been scrubbed off or painted over, only to be covered again with spray paint.

“It’s pretty hard when you run a business to keep cleaning this up all the time,” Tobin said.

A community cleanup has been organized for Friday afternoon to try to stamp out tagging with spray paint on businesses in Sydney Mines and North Sydney.

Const. Shaun MacLennan, with the Cape Breton Regional Police community office in North Sydney, said a paint cleaning supply company has donated some product and businesses have volunteered employees to scrub off spray paint before the Canada Day holiday next week.

Both MacLennan and Tobin said some homes have been hit by vandals, but the biggest problem is with businesses.

“Because we had such a problem with it over the winter, a lot of the businesses didn’t have time to deal with it,” said MacLennan.

“It’s the 125th anniversary of Sydney Mines, and we’re just trying to make it look a little better.”

He said studies show graffiti can be reduced by cleaning it off within 24 to 48 hours. It is hoped the community cleanup Friday will get a good start on the problem.

“We’re hoping that if we get a clean slate over the weekend, (business owners) will keep cleaning up.”

Earlier this year, an investigation found four youths involved in graffiti, said MacLennan. Three were 11 years old and could not be charged. A 14-year-old was charged.

Another teenager was also charged about two weeks ago.

Tobin, clearly frustrated with the situation, said he wonders why parents would let their young children out late at night and suggested police should be able to charge the parents.

MacLennan said when it comes to youths under 12, police have their hands tied.

“Their parents were notified … and hopefully their parents do their best to prevent it from happening again,” he said.

Tobin also questioned why the Baddeck library would host a workshop on graffiti as art, but regional librarian Faye MacDougall said a stencil workshop held earlier this month emphasized the difference between art and vandalism.

The stencil art session was led by a local youth who encouraged participants to paint on canvas or inexpensive poster board.

“It certainly wasn’t promoting going out and painting on public space,” said MacDougall.

“In fact, there was a lengthy discussion around the differences between the technique as used for artistic purposes — and sanctioned by building owners — and vandalism.”.
