It is also worth mentioning an extra added item of watch history that is related to the cushion-shaped case of the original Breitling Oyster. Does it look familiar? Breitling went on to increase the size of the case and develop a diving watch for Italian instrument company Panerai. The now iconic Panerai case was actually a Breitling creation. If you put a modern Panerai next to this small (under 30mm wide) Breitling Oyster you will see exactly where its design DNA came from. While so much of what Breitling is today evolved in the first few years of the brand, the traditionally-styled dials and cases of the first Oyster watches are a thing of the past. No steel, and you aren't likely to see any steel models as Breitling only produces the Day-Date in precious metals. If you want a platinum model in a neat color then perhaps all you need to do is wait a few years. I don't know if Breitling intends to continue with these colorful creations or if it is just an experiment. When it comes to playing with color they have mostly done so on their lady's pieces - which of course will be a major consumer of these new Day-Date models, but again I think some guys will dig them. In addition to the cases being in gold (and lovely they are), the hands and hour markers, as well as the strap's folding buckles are in gold.

Inside the 36mm wide Day-Date is the in-house made Breitling caliber 3155 automatic COSC Chronometer certified movement. It features the time, date, and day of the week (fully spelled out). You of course have Breitling's signature cyclops magnifier lens over the day as well. One of my favorite little details about the Day-Date dial is use of small Roman numerals on the minute scale around the chapter ring. Nice little detail. Breitling also includes a sort of end-piece style element on the case so that there is a gapless connection between the strap and the case. It is a minor detail, but one of the reasons that Breitling watches are held in high regard.

You might not love Breitling, and I certainly don't all the time, but I give them kudos for offering a ton of refinement and a very reliable wearing experience. They really do make some of the best case and bracelet metal out there. If you are interested in an original Day-Date watch because you love the style and fluted bezel, but with a more interesting color then your timepieces may have just about arrived.

First what I don’t really like – 40mm wide. Everything else I am in love with. Enough to be OK with a 40mm wide watch (I'd like it bigger). The original quartz watch name gets recycled. Finally a daily-wear watch you can pretty much rely on to be fully accurate anywhere on the planet (with its GPS signal syncing), and that requires pretty much no attention or adjusting. Just a super solid sober high-tech sport watch from the king of super solid high-tech sport watches.

At first I didn’t like the look of the watch even though I liked the functionality. Then I started to play with the Pilot Doublematic and I put it on my wrist… at that point I was hooked. So many functions that are actually useful, great in-house made movement. And a price that feels appropriate.

German indestructible tool watches don’t get much better than this. A proprietary chronograph module makes for awesome functionality, in a case that is light and hard. Sapphire crystal bezel inlay, and the feeling that you and this watch are going to see some heavy action and walk out just fine.

You sort of either love or hate these watches. Some people say that Bell & Ross is messing with their tried and true formula of unambiguous military watch designs, and still others love the playfulness and designs of these pieces which are directly inspired by specific cockpit instruments. One interesting fact worth mentioning is that Bell & Ross will offer a boxed set that includes the 2012 and 2013 BR 01 Aviation Instrument watches together. Why no Compass or Radar? I don't know - but as limited editions, they may have all been sold out a while ago.

Each of the watches will come in Bell & Ross' 46mm wide BR 01 case in steel with a black PVD coating. The BR 01-92 Heading Indicator uses discs rather than hands to indicate the time. The concept is identical to that of the Compass or Radar watches. The only difference is the graphical design. Inside the watch is a base Swiss ETA 2892 automatic movement.

The BR 01-92 Airspeed watch also uses an ETA 2892 automatic movement but retains the hands as they are normally. This is once again going to be a polarizing design, this is interesting because you get a very traditional aviation style dial that is colorful. This is extremely rare. As a traditional aviator's watch you get an inner ring for the hours and an outer ring for the minutes - which is more logical as the hands touch the rings that they actually refer to.

Last is the Bell & Ross 01-97 Climb. This watch uses an ETA 2897 automatic movement and is the only one of the trio to offer any complications aside from the time. The 2897 also includes a power reserve indicator and Bell & Ross decided to include the date in there as well. With each of the watches will come a black rubber strap and velcr0-style flight strap - and each will be limited to just 999 pieces as a limited edition.

Aside from a few small differences such as "Only Watch" on the dial, this version of the new for 2013 Ulysse Nardin Marine Chronometer Manufacture with an in-house made chronograph movement is very similar to the retail version. Nevertheless, the strength of the brand shows as it beat price estimates.

It is difficult to gauge the market strength of high complication ladies watches, but this is precisely what the Chanel Premiere Flying Tourbillon is. An inherently beautiful watch, it is competing in a very male dominated market.

With a lot of unique decorative engraving and an in-house movement, it should have been a no-brainer for Chopard to see a price in the estimated range for their arguably well-priced L.U.C Tourbillon - but that didn't quite happen.

The cases come in either steel or red gold, and the bezel is in ceramic with a brushed tip and polished sides on the carbon fiber dial version, while the matte dial versions have matching gold or steel bezels. Rubber straps with thin vertical lines remind us of the first Big Bang watches that came out just a few years ago - but seems ages old given the plethora of Big Bang models to precede it.

The Classic Fusion comes in two sizes. I believe the cases are 44mm and 42mm. In the images above, the matte dials versions are larger in the steel case, and a bit smaller in the gold case. In addition to the plainer matte dials, Breitling also offers a sportier carbon fiber dial option. I anticipate many more versions to come in the future. Perhaps even with classic complications for such thinner pieces such as calendars and moon phase indicators - all with the Breitling twist.

Being quite thin, the watches are very comfortable - and easy to adjust. High-end watches with rubber straps these days have a system where the excess rubber strap tuck in where your wrist is, rather than flops around on the outside. I didn't get pricing information or specific availability, but expect the Classic Fusion watches out soon. Oh, and if you are wondering about the "Fusion" part of the name - well Mr. Biver considers the original Big Bang watches to be a "fusion" of materials. That for him is the point of the collection. So here, the idea is to return to the classic feeling of this "Fusion" feeling.

You know how the most sober looking ultra complex watch out there. It is hard not to like the looks and appreciate all that it does. It isn't cheap though!
