LONDON, April 29 (Reuters) - Bernie Ecclestone has made clear that Formula One will pay prize money to only the top 10 teams from the end of this season.

Since 2010, payments have been made to the 11th and 12th-placed teams to help three newcomers on reduced budgets who came in after the abrupt departure of major manufacturers Honda, Toyota and BMW.

There are now 11 teams remaining after the demise last year of Spanish-based HRT. Ecclestone, the sport's commercial chief, said the plan was to return to rewarding the top 10 only, injecting more drama into the battle to avoid last place.

"It's a bit more incentive to get going and get into the top 10. It's a bit like the football where you can go up and down," he told Reuters in a telephone interview.

The confidential Concorde Agreement that governs the sport expired at the end of last year and a new one, to run to the end of 2020, has yet to be signed by all parties.

In its absence, Ecclestone has agreed individual commercial agreements with all of the teams expect Russian-licensed Marussia, who have finished 11th in the last three years and behind Caterham.

Marussia chief executive Graeme Lowdon confirmed to Reuters that his team had not been offered a bilateral agreement by rights holders CVC but was reluctant to discuss the matter.

"It is our understanding that none of the parties are making any public comment about the financial discussions relating to a new Concorde Agreement and on that basis we would prefer not to make any comment," he added.

Ecclestone said after HRT folded that he would rather have10 teams, providing one of them was Ferrari.

The new Concorde Agreement, which must be signed by all teams as well as the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA), should replace the various bilateral agreements once it comes into operation.

Ecclestone told reporters at the Bahrain Grand Prix this month that the detailed document was "in the hands of the lawyers".

The FIA said on March 8 that negotiations were "proceeding positively in order to be concluded in the near future".

Marussia are 10th overall after four of this year's 19 races and ahead of Malaysian-owned Caterham. They nearly finished 10th last year but lost out to Caterham in the final race.

Now, with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., announcing last week he is retiring after this session of Congress, Louisianans have another chance to lead Energy and Natural Resources with their Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu, who faces a tough reelection in a red state that voted 58 percent in favor of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney in the 2012 election.

Landrieu is the third-most-senior Democrat on the Energy panel, after current Chairman Ron Wyden of Oregon and Tim Johnson of South Dakota. But Johnson has already announced he is retiring after this Congress, and Wyden also happens to be the second-most-senior Democrat on the Finance Committee, considered one of the most powerfuland therefore covetedpanels in Congress. In the wake of this domino effect prompted by Baucuss retirement announcement, Landrieu coould become the top Democrat on the Energy committee.

I thought she was in good shape politically before the Baucus retirement, said former Sen. Bennett Johnston, D-La., who chaired the Energy panel from 1987 to 1995. But I think since the Baucus retirement, it pretty much seals the deal. Louisianans understand how important the Energy and Natural Resources Committee is to the state.

Thats a confident take on an outcome dependent on several big open questions. Will Democrats keep control of the Senate? Will the current chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee choose to take the Finance Committee gavel in 2014, as conventional wisdom suggests? Will chairing a congressional committee make a big difference in a political campaign, because voters could well care less about such inside-baseball issues and more about the economy generally? Will Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., try to maneuver around Landrieuwhose views on energy are more conservative than those of almost every other Democrat in the Senateto ensure a more moderate Democrat gets the committees top spot?

With fewer than 200 days to go until Election Day 2013, its not too early to start speculating, but it is too early to confidently know the answers to any of these questions.

For her part, Landrieu is already articulating one of her key reelection platforms, and its intricately tied to her leadership on the Energy committee.

Without sounding braggadocious, Im indispensable in this effort to secure for Louisiana a significant and reliable string of revenue to save our coast, Landrieu said in an interview with The Times-Picayuneabout a week before Baucus announced his plans to retire.

Landrieu is implicitly referring to legislation she is sponsoring, along with Senate Energy and Natural Resources ranking member Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, which would immediately direct to coastal states more than a third of the money companies drilling for oil and natural gas offshore pay to the federal government. Current law will direct this money to coastal states beginning in 2017. Landrieu says the additional money would be instrumental in restoring and maintaining Louisianas coastlines. Wyden has expressed an interest in pursuing her legislation this Congress, but its unlikely it will become law before Election Day 2013.

She will be working to convince the people of Louisiana they have more to gain by having a moderate voice in Washington who has great seniority at this point than they do to elect a new senator and start all over again, said Gordon Taylor, a principal at lobbying firm Ogilvy Government Relations who has worked in the Louisiana delegation for 12 years and knows Landrieu well.

Since her first election in 1996, Landrieu has never won more than 52 percent of the vote. And over the past 17 years, the state has become more Republican. Of the eight elected federal public offices in the state, six are held by Republicans, including Landrieus fellow senator, David Vitter, and the governor, Bobby Jindal. Most polling shows Landrieu slightly ahead of any of her potential challengers, including current Louisiana Republican Reps. Bill Cassidy and John Fleming and former Rep. Jeff Landry, R-La. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report predicts it will be one of the more competitive contests of the cycle. She also has more cash on hand than any of her challengers, according to Federal Election Commission reports.

The political dynamics of Landrieus reelection campaign could well rest on issues other than energy, despite the states dependence on the industry. Her recent vote in support of expanding background checks for guns, for example, could turn off voters in the deep-red northern part of the state. The prospect of becoming chair of the Energy committee could help more in her pocketbook than in voting booths.

Im sure itll help her raise money," said John Maginnis, a Louisiana strategist who writes a weekly political newsletter. "But I dont know if its going to change the real composition of the race.

"Some girls might not have a good relationship with their parents," she said, "or they had unprotected sex and they don't know what to do."

On the other side of the issue are folks like Brenda Velasco Ross, who says the new rules infringe on her rights as a parent.

"It breaks my heart and saddens me and really angers me," said Ross, stepmom of four, including 12- and 13-year-olds in Fullerton, Calif. "If you have to buy Sudafed, you have to show ID. When I buy spray paint for a project for my daughter, I have to show my ID. It just baffles me that, with this, which has to do with pregnancy and being sexually active, I don't have to be involved. That to me just violates my rights as a parent to have guidelines and parameters for my children."

The two opinions reflect some of the issues in the debate over new rules issued last week by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which lowered the age for buying the drug without a prescription from 17 to 15. In April, a federal judge, Edward Korman, said there should be no age restrictions at all. The Obama administration said it wants to maintain the prescription requirement for those under 15 and will appeal the judge's ruling.

Guarino, 19, a college freshman majoring in public health and political science at Boston University, said she encounters a lot of ignorance on issues related to sex and pregnancy. "I would encourage any young person to go talk to their parents or a doctor, but that's not the reality," she said.

Jennifer Morgan, 18, a native of Somerville, Mass., who attends college in Pennsylvania, said she's not sure she supports eliminating the age limit entirely, but "I think it's fine for a 15-year-old. Not every girl has the privilege of being able to go talk to her mother in a crisis like that. Because time is of the essence, and if a girl in that situation and that age doesn't have any other support, I feel like it's OK."

Morgan recently completed a stint on a leadership team for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and added that while abstinence is an ideal, "not every teen is going to stay abstinent."

Samantha Bailey-Loomis, 16, who recently founded a Students For Life chapter at her high school in Branford, Conn., opposes the concept of the morning-after pill in the same way that she opposes abortion. "My mom had me when she was 17," she said. "If this was available when she was young, I wouldn't exist. I wouldn't be able to make the difference I am in the community today." Loomis said girls who are worried they might be pregnant should talk to their parents about it, and if they can't, should seek help from organizations that can provide the support they need.

Dianne Sikel, who volunteers in a juvenile probation program in Phoenix, said dropping the age limit is "a move in the right direction." She added that it's easy to tell kids to use condoms, "but it doesn't always work out that way."

"These pills being available to teens are far better of an option than having a young couple being forced to become parents, for a young girl, who made a bad choice one evening, who may be forced to abort, or ultimately having to give up a child for adoption," said Sikel, a parent of two boys, 13 and 16.

Sophia Martin, who teaches at a high school in Northern California where many students continue their education after being expelled from other schools, said she "can understand how upsetting it is to think your kid might engage in unprotected sex and then get the morning after pill without your knowledge. But to me the core reason to abolish any kind of age limit is that there are young people who are in situations in their families where they can't turn to their parents."

Martin said some girls become "pregnant not because they chose to have sex. It's such a hard situation for them to talk about."

But Andrew Bay, 19, who's finishing up his freshman year at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., says he thinks making the morning-after pill so easily available "almost encourages even younger children to have unprotected sex." If he had to put an age limit on getting the drug without a prescription, "It should probably be 18. At least at 18 you're considered mature enough to make medical decisions on your own."

Denny Pattyn, founder of Silver Ring Thing, which promotes chastity until marriage and encourages young people to wear purity rings to symbolize their commitments, said he worries that allowing younger teens to get the morning-after pill without a doctor or parent's knowledge is going to increase the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. "It's incredibly irresponsible," he said. "These kids are getting these diseases and they don't even know they're getting them."

Dr. Cora Breuner of the American Academy of Pediatrics said headlines about the age limit have prompted some families to broach the topic of safe sex. Even if parents don't bring it up, teens are hearing about it via social media.

"I know this in my own practice, there are a lot more conversations between parents and their children about this decision," said Breuner, an adolescent health specialist at Seattle Children's Hospital. "This will prompt a conversation nationally that can help at so many levels."

The message left by Frank Dileo was retrieved by police from the cellphone of Dr. Conrad Murray and played during the trial of a negligence lawsuit filed by Jackson's mother against concert promoter AEG Live.

"I'm sure you're aware he had an episode last night," the message said. "He's sick ... We gotta see what he's doing."

Plaintiff's lawyer Brian Panish acknowledged outside court that the episode occurred on the day Jackson was told by Kenny Ortega, the director of his "This is It" concert, to go home from a rehearsal because he was pale and shivering.

Panish suggested that if Dileo was aware of the incident, so were AEG executives.

The lawsuit claims AEG didn't properly investigate Murray, who was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter after prosecutors said he gave Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol.

Jurors were not given any further details on the episode.

AEG denies it hired Murray, and it is likely to blame Jackson for insisting on having Murray as his doctor because of his dependence on propofol, which Jackson used to sleep.

BERLIN (Reuters) - New wind farms off Germany's North Sea coast will provide an ideal habitat that could help restore the lobster population near Heligoland after British bombing during and after World War II drove them away.

Biologists at the Alfred-Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research are breeding 3,000 lobsters to be released next year into the Borkum Riffgat offshore wind farm near the island 70 km off the German-Dutch coast.

The 1.5 square km island had a thriving fishing industry before it became a Nazi fortress in the war, pounded by Allied bombs, and then later used for target practice. It is now a tourist resort.

Billions of euros of investment in wind turbines as part of Germany's ambitious transition to renewable energy has given the scheme impetus. Lobsters, whose local population is 90 percent smaller than it was 70 years ago, need a firm seabed to thrive.

"The new wind parks mean lobsters may settle in a new habitat, because the stony foundations offer a favorable environment," project leader Heinz-Dieter Franke said.

The 700,000 euro ($923,500) scheme is funded by compensation paid to the state of Lower Saxony by utility EWE for any potential ecological damage caused by the construction of its wind park. The money will fund breeding, reintroduction and monitoring of the lobsters for roughly two years.

"With Germany's shift to renewables, we could have 5,000 wind farms by 2030, so if it works, this kind of project could have a huge effect on the lobster population," Franke said.

He estimated that wind farms could help increase the lobster population to as many as 300,000 lobsters in the area around Heligoland in the long run from 50,000 to 100,000 now.

EXPLOSIONS

Scandinavian and Mediterranean lobster stocks have collapsed in the past few decades from a combination of environmental factors.

But some scientists cite British explosives as one reason for the decimation of the lobster population around Heligoland.

In one of the biggest bombing runs on Heligoland during the war, the Allied air force destroyed almost every building on the island, raining down 7,000 bombs in a two-hour raid on April 18, 1945.

For five years after the war, Britain used Heligoland for target practice, and in 1947 it set off some 7,000 metric tons worth of explosives to blow up U-boat pens in one of the biggest non-nuclear detonations on record.

Britain released the crater-scarred island for resettlement in 1952, but scientists say that was too late for the lobsters.

The toxins from the bombs may have hurt the crustaceans' sense of smell, which is essential in finding a sexual partner and so damaged their ability to reproduce, Franke said.

Lobster expert Dominic Boothroyd, general manager of Britain's National Lobster Hatchery, said the idea of using the hard foundations of a wind park made sense and that projects to reintroduce young lobsters had taken place in Britain and Norway, though not on wind farms.

"(From these projects), we know the animals survive and that they contribute to fishery and reproduce. We have also got a lot of interesting biological information," Boothroyd said.

In a 7-2 decision, the justices sided with Adrian Moncrieffe, a longtime resident of the United States from Jamaica who was deported from the United States over possession of a small amount of marijuana. The court said Moncrieffe should have had the opportunity to contest his deportation.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor said in her opinion for the court that marijuana offenses must involve either the sale of the drug or possession of more than a small amount to count as serious enough to warrant automatic deportation.

Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented.

The decision means that Moncrieffe will be able to return to the United States so that he can make the case that he should be allowed to remain in the country where he has lived since the age of 3, said Thomas Goldstein, his Washington-based lawyer. Goldstein said he believes that the government often drops the deportation effort in minor cases like Moncrieffe's.

The case stems from Moncrieffe's 2008 arrest in Georgia. Police pulled him over and found 1.3 grams of marijuana in his car, the equivalent of two or three marijuana cigarettes, Sotomayor said. He faced the charge of possession of marijuana with an intent to distribute, which under Georgia law encompasses a range of conduct from social sharing to distribution of larger amounts.

Moncrieffe accepted a plea with no jail time in which the charge would be expunged if he complied with his probation. Two years later, immigration agents jailed him and began deportation proceedings, citing the marijuana arrest. For deportation purposes, it was as if Moncrieffe had been a major drug dealer.

In the government's eyes, Moncrieffe's crime was serious enough to count as an "aggravated felony" and that it fell into a category that made his deportation automatic and deprived even the attorney general of the ability to step in and cancel it.

But Sotomayor said that under immigration law, a conviction that "fails to establish that the offense involved either remuneration or more than a small amount of marijuana" is not an aggravated felony.

She also dismissed the concern raised by Alito in his dissent that, because about half the states have statutes similar to the one in Georgia, many people convicted of marijuana crimes will avoid deportation because the state laws are not specific enough.

"Escaping aggravated felony treatment does not mean escaping deportation," she said. It just means that the deportation is not automatic, Sotomayor said.

Thomas wrote that the Georgia law defines the crime as a drug trafficking offense, which should have resolved the case in the government's favor.

The case is Moncrieffe v. Holder, 11-702.

The company hasn't said what it plans to reveal during the event at its Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters, but speculation has centered on a mobile phone made by HTC Corp. According to media reports, the phone would deeply integrate Facebook into the Android operating system, aiding Facebook in its aim to evolve from its Web-based roots into a "mobile-first" company.

"What Facebook wants is to put itself at the front of the Android user experience for as many Facebook users as possible and make Facebook more elemental to their customers' experience," said Forrester analyst Charles Golvin.

The move could help to attract more mobile advertisers. Though mobile ads were a big concern for Facebook's investors even before the company's initial public offering last May, some of the worry has subsided as the company muscles its way into the market.

Last year, Facebook began showing ads to its mobile audience by shoehorning corporate-sponsored content into users' news feeds, which also include updates from friends and brands they follow. Facebook now faces the challenge of showing people mobile ads without annoying or alienating them.

The mobile advertising market is growing quickly, thanks in large part to Facebook and Twitter, which also entered the space in 2012. Research firm eMarketer expects U.S. mobile ad spending to grow 77 percent this year to $7.29 billion, from $4.11 billion last year.

EMarketer said Wednesday that it expects Facebook Inc. to reap $965 million in U.S. mobile ad revenue in 2013. That's about 2.5 times the $391 million in 2012, the first year that Facebook started showing mobile ads.

Clark Fredricksen, vice president at eMarketer, said it's "tough to speculate" how much effect Thursday's announcement would have on ad revenue.

At the same time, he says "there are some clear reasons why a deeper integration with mobile operating systems and handsets make sense for Facebook. At the end of the day, the more deeply Facebook can engage consumers, no matter what device or operating system or handset," the better.

Such deeper integration could mean Facebook is no longer a stand-alone mobile app but part of the operating system's building blocks. For example, if users who want to take a photo would use Facebook's camera app. If they want to chat, they'd use Facebook's chat service. The invitation to the event, "come see our new home on Android," suggests that Facebook will be prominently featured on a phone's home screen.

Facebook's rival, Google Inc., makes the Android software that Facebook and HTC would be using under the widely speculated scenario. Google makes the software available on an open-source basis, meaning others including rivals are free to adapt it to their needs. Amazon.com Inc. does just that in modifying Android to run its Kindle tablet computers.

Facebook is No. 2 behind Google Inc. when it comes to mobile ads, and it isn't expected to surpass the online search leader any time soon. Google dominates the mobile search market with 93 percent of U.S. mobile search advertising dollars, according to eMarketer. Online music service Pandora Inc. is in third place when it comes to mobile ad dollars, followed by Twitter.

Tukwini Mandela accused lawyer George Bizos of insulting her mother, slandering the Mandela family name and spreading "blatant lies and innuendo" in a bitter rift over control of two companies linked to 94-year-old Mandela. The main purpose of the companies is to channel funds from the sale of handprint artwork by Mandela for the benefit of his family.

"Please have the decency to behave as an elder if you care for my grandfather and his name, which catapulted you into undeserved stardom," Tukwini Mandela wrote in an open letter that was emailed to The Associated Press on Tuesday. She urged Bizos, a stalwart of the struggle for equal rights in South Africa, to act in a manner "befitting of your status" in society.

In a statement sent to AP, Bizos said he had not been disrespectful to Nelson Mandela or his family.

"I have been a close friend and supporter of the family for over six decades," he said. He added that he would leave it to a court to decide on issues raised in a legal case brought against him and several associates by Makaziwe Mandela, Tukwini's mother.

The disagreement comes as Nelson Mandela, who last appeared in public in 2010, receives medical care at his Johannesburg home after several hospital visits in recent months. He is seen globally as a symbol of reconciliation and sacrifice after spending 27 years in prison during racist white rule and then leading South Africa's transition to democratic, all-race elections in 1994.

The dispute over the funds troubles many South Africans for whom corruption, high crime rates and economic inequality have tainted the new South Africa. Mandela was South Africa's first black president and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Makaziwe Mandela and her sister Zenani have launched a court case against Bizos and other associates of Nelson Mandela, alleging they should not remain directors of Harmonieux Investment Holdings and Magnifique Investment Holdings because they were not properly appointed. The case also alleges that the trio has neglected its duties at the helm of the companies.

Earlier this week, The Star newspaper quoted 84-year-old Bizos, who defended Mandela during the apartheid years, as saying Makaziwe Mandela's goal was to take some company money, estimated to be $1.3 million, without providing details of how it would be used.

"This woman wanted to take over the money, not for any specific purpose, and distribute it to members of the family," he said. "That is contrary to the provisions of the trust. Therefore we refused to give her the money."

Norton Rose, a Johannesburg law firm representing Bizos in the dispute with Mandela's daughters, said Bizos' position will be outlined in papers likely to be filed in court in mid-May.

In an interview last week with South Africa's Talk Radio 702, Norton Rose director Michael Hart said Nelson Mandela gave "explicit instructions" for Bizos and two associates, lawyer Bally Chuene and Tokyo Sexwale, a businessman and politician, to oversee the disputed companies. They have done so "without any charge or remuneration," he said.

In the letter, Tukwini Mandela said her mother is a "highly educated and accomplished businesswoman in her own right," and that Bizos' reported comments showed a lack of respect for Nelson Mandela and his advocacy on behalf of women.

"I doubt you would ever refer to the women in your life as 'this woman,'" Tukwini Mandela wrote.

"You and your peddlers of falsehood have spent the whole of last week casting aspersions on my family, spreading blatant lies and innuendo, hoping that a trial through the media will deter us from defending our name and legacy," she wrote.

Tukwini Mandela is the marketing director of House of Mandela, a winemaking company. Two other granddaughters of Mandela are starring in a U.S. television reality show titled "Being Mandela."

Bizos, who was born in Greece, defended Mandela during the Rivonia trial in 1960s that led to the African National Congress leader's conviction on sabotage charges and a sentence of life imprisonment.

Bizos works at the Legal Resources Center, a human rights group in South Africa. He has recently cross-examined the national police commissioner and other witnesses before a panel investigating the shooting deaths of 34 striking miners by police last year.

The Yankees captain fractured his left ankle for a second time in six months, a blow to a New York team already reeling from injuries and one that raises long-term questions about the future of a shortstop who will be 39 when he returns.

"It's not what we wanted, that's for sure," manager Joe Girardi after Thursday night's 6-2, 12-inning loss to Arizona. "I know it's extremely disappointing for him because he's so used to being here with us.

"It's something that we're going to have to fight through, so guys are really going to have to step up in his absence and, hopefully, we'll get him back sometime after the All-Star break."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Jeter should be able to resume his rehabilitation when the new crack heals, in about four to eight weeks. Cashman has repeatedly maintained the 13-time All-Star should be able to return at his previous level of play.

Jeter will not require surgery for the break, Cashman said after speaking with Dr. Robert Anderson, who operated on him last Oct. 20.

"He told me 95 percent of the people that have this, they come back from it fine. You just have to back off," Cashman said.

"But it's a setback, so it's not a good situation," he said.

Then again, the Yankees and Jeter repeatedly said his rehab was going well. And Jeter, whose range already has declined, turns 39 on June 26.

He was hurt last Oct. 13 in the AL championship series opener against Detroit. He was limited to five spring training games and 11 at-bats, and when the team left spring training he stayed behind for rehabilitation at New York's minor league complex in Tampa, Fla.

After three straight days of workouts, Jeter went to Charlotte, N.C., and was examined Thursday by Anderson.

"They did a new CT scan which revealed a small crack in the area of the previous injury, so we have to back off and let that heal," Cashman said. "This is obviously a setback. In terms of speculating on when we might see Derek back with us, we'd be looking at some time after the All-Star break."

Cashman himself is recovering from a broken leg sustained in a spring training skydiving accident and entered the press conference room at Yankee Stadium in a motorized scooter.

"Clearly he hasn't done anything wrong," the GM said. "He was cleared to play. This is the third CT scan he's had. His prior two CT scans showed the healing and 100 percent healing. He wasn't cleared for the baseball activities and cleared to play until he had 100 percent healing, so this is a new fracture, but a small one. That's I guess the only good part. They kept saying the word 'small.'"

Jeter is among four regulars missing from the Yankees' lineup, a group that totals 32 All-Star appearances. The defending AL East champions are 8-6 after Thursday's loss.

Outfielder Curtis Granderson broke his right forearm when hit by a pitch from Toronto's J.A. Happ in his first at-bat of spring training on Feb. 24 and is expected back next month.

First baseman Mark Teixeira also hopes to return in May from a partially torn tendon sheath in his right wrist sustained March 5 while with the U.S. team at the World Baseball Classic.

And third baseman Alex Rodriguez isn't expected back until after the All-Star break following left hip surgery on Jan. 16.

Jeter didn't play in his first spring training game until March 9, played again March 11 and returned to shortstop for the first time on March 13. After playing the field for consecutive days on March 15-16, he felt soreness. He was scratched from the starting lineup on March 19 and had an anti-inflammatory injection.

"He's obviously the toughest one we've ever had, and when Derek Jeter continues to have issues that don't go away, that means more than just your typical something," Cashman said. "So that's what led to the follow-up with Dr. Anderson in Charlotte."

Eduardo Nunez and Jayson Nix have split most of the time at shortstop this season, with Robinson Cano shifting over for one inning. Nix has two errors and Nunez one.

Last year, Nunez had fielding foibles when the Yankees shifted him among shortstop, third base and the outfield.

"I hope that he comes back well, healthy," Nunez said, adding that he would be comfortable playing the whole season. "Of course. I've been looking forward all my life."

Cashman said the Yankees do not anticipate making a trade for another shortstop. Manager Joe Girardi was pleased with Nunez's play as Jeter's primary replacement. Nunez began the night with a .240 batting average and two RBIs.

"I know he had his issues last year, but I think he's played a good shortstop for us. I think he's swung the bat OK for us," Girardi said.

NOTES: Francisco Cervelli hit a tying home run off J.J. Putz in the ninth, but Cody Ross had a go-ahead single against David Phelps (0-1) in the 12th and former Yankee Eric Chavez followed with a three-run double. Robinson Cano also homered, and Phil Hughes gave up a pair of solo homers and six hits in seven innings with six strikeouts and no walks. Cervelli was called for catcher's interference twice. ...
