"I think the UK's participation in the EU is an expression of its influence and its ... role in the world," Obama said during a news conference with Cameron, who was visiting the White House.

Cameron is trying to unite his party on the issue after two cabinet ministers suggested they would vote to leave the EU if a referendum were held today.

Obama said the decision was ultimately up to the people of the UK, and noted there were "tough negotiations" ahead on economic and political issues.

"I will say this, that David's basic point that you probably want to see if you can fix what's broken in a very important relationship before you break it off makes some sense to me," Obama said.

Cameron told reporters that it is in the "national interests of Britain" to work with the EU on reforms that would make it "more open, more competitive, more flexible," and that it made sense to wait until reforms are made to hold a referendum on whether to stay in the EU.

"There's a very good reason why there's not going to be a referendum tomorrow," Cameron said.

"It would be a false choice between the status quo and leaving," he said.

LOS ANGELES, May 11 (Reuters) - Left wing Dustin Penner has made a habit of coming up with the crucial play at the best possible time, even though his National Hockey League career has endured more ups and downs than a runaway roller-coaster.

He has scaled giddy heights with the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings, and enjoyed a fair measure of success with the Edmonton Oilers, but he has also plunged forgettable depths in his seven NHL seasons.

Yet the burly 30-year-old Canadian can never be overlooked - whether by his team mates or his opponents. Like a wounded lion, Penner is often at his most dangerous just when he appears to be at his lowest ebb.

Friday night at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles provided the latest example of his uncanny ability to deliver in style with the odds seemingly stacked against him.

In front of a sellout crowd, Penner unleashed a thunderous slap shot with just 0.2 seconds left in the second period to score the decisive goal for the Kings as they clinched their first-round playoff series 4-2 against the St. Louis Blues.

Penner, who had fallen out of favor with head coach Darryl Sutter during the regular season, struck his hammer blow from just inside the blue line, the puck deflecting off an opponent's stick before flying past Blues goaltender Brian Elliott.

"I put everything into it - all 242.5 pounds," a smiling Penner told reporters after the Stanley Cup champion Kings had won Game Six 2-1, their 10th straight success on home ice. "It may have deflected off a shaft. It was going pretty hard.

"It was a fortunate break, a turnover in the neutral zone. (Rob) Scuderi handed it up to me and I cut to my wing. I heard the bench yell, 'Shoot,' and it's pretty simple after that.

"There were probably 20 guys and three coaches yelling for me to shoot. I don't think I've ever scored with 0.2 seconds left or whatever it was."

Asked how much time he thought he had to get off the shot, Penner replied: "They're not going to yell with 10 seconds left.

"Someone is looking at the clock at the same time they are looking at me. You've just got to trust your team mates."

NO BLAME

Elliott, who faced just 16 shots on the night while saving 14 of them, refused to apportion any blame to defenseman Roman Polak, whose stick deflected Penner's tiebreaking goal.

"I saw it come off because it was going low first, but what can you say? You can't put blame on him (Polak) for trying to get in front of the puck," Elliott said.

"We're all trying to do our best out there. Obviously he's frustrated, we're all frustrated, that had to be the one (goal) we couldn't get back."

It was Penner's sixth playoff goal for the Kings, and his third game-winner.

He had fashioned something similar just over a year ago when he ensured that the Kings booked their place in the Stanley Cup finals with a 4-3 overtime win over Phoenix in Game Five.

Penner chipped in with a rebound to grab the game-winner with 2:18 left in overtime, giving his team a 4-1 series win as they returned to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in almost 20 years.

"It'll be nice to go back," he said at the time. "I've been there once before (with Anaheim in 2007). I didn't get a chance to enjoy it as much as I should've. This time I'm going to take it all in."

He certainly did, going on to win his second Stanley Cup as the Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 4-2 in the best-of-seven series to claim the sport's biggest prize for the first time in the team's 45-year history.

And all this for a player who was cut by several minor hockey teams early in his career, including his local junior club, and was never drafted by an NHL team.

Penner was signed as a free agent by Anaheim after playing college hockey for the University of Maine and won the Stanley Cup in his first full season with the Ducks, scoring the game-winner in Game Four of the five-game series against the Ottawa Senators.

Though he controversially moved to the Oilers via an offer sheet for the 2007-08 season and has endured periods of poor form since then, Penner has never forgotten how to come up the goods when needed.

The fifth-seeded Kings will meet either the second-seeded Ducks or the sixth-seeded San Jose Sharks in the second round of the playoffs, starting next week, and the unpredictable Penner is once again likely to raise his game when the heat is on. located at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in Manhattan, replaces its original display home that was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. The replacement structure is now under constructionand is expected to be completed over the coming weeks.

"After many months of hard work recovering from Sandy we are extremely excited to announce the opening of our new Space Shuttle Pavilion, and to once again [be able to] share Enterprise with all who visit the museum," Intrepid president Susan Marenoff-Zausner said in a release. "Our team is working hard to bring an incredible exhibit to life that will allow Enterprise to continue to inspire generations of innovators and dreamers for years to come." []

Enterprise, which did not fly in space but was used for a series of astronaut-piloted approach and landing tests in 1977,of the Intrepid, a converted aircraft carrier, on July 19, 2012.

A short three months later, Hurricane Sandy tore through New York City, destroying the Intrepid's first space shuttle pavilion, a climate-controlled, air-supported structure that sheltered Enterprise. The "superstorm" also caused minor damage to the shuttle's vertical stabilizer, or tail.

Repairs to the black and white, iconic orbiter were finished in March, when construction of its new pavilion began with the erection of a metal framework.

"We know space shuttle Enterprise is in good and caring hands, and we hope everyone has an opportunity to visit this important part of our space exploration history in the new pavilion," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement.

The new exhibition facility keeps several of the features of the original display while adding exhibits and experiences.

Visitors to the Intrepid will still be able to walk underneath Enterprise, which sits 10 feet (3 meters) off the deck, and view the shuttle from above, now from a larger observation platform than before. A short film produced for the Intrepid that traces the history of Enterprise and the space shuttle program, narrated by "Star Trek" actor Leonard Nimoy, is also returning.

The redesigned pavilion will now include a "soundscape entryway" featuring the audio exchanges between NASA's flight controllers and the astronauts who flew Enterprise, as well as a new stage for demonstrations and expanded exhibits highlighting technology spin-offs from the 30-year shuttle program.

Enterprise's structure will also serve as the new home for millionaire "space tourist" Gregory Olsen'sTMA-6 capsule, which he loaned to the museum in 2011 and is currently displayed on the Intrepid's hangar deck.

The pavilion, sponsored by Time Warner Cable, remains a temporary home for the prototype shuttle. The Intrepid is planning to build a permanent exhibit facility for Enterprise that would display the orbiter near, but not on, the aircraft carrier, while providing enhanced educational programs.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A shortage of properties could take some edge off home sales during the spring selling season, but the housing market recovery should remain intact.

The stock of houses for sale has declined rapidly in recent months as both investors and ordinary Americans rush to take advantage of near record low mortgage rates.

The surge in demand for houses, thanks to an improving labor market and the Federal Reserve's very accommodative monetary policy, is putting a firmer foundation under the economy as it deals with the headwinds from belt tightening in Washington.

In February, there were 1.94 million previously owned homes on the market, representing 4.7 months of supply. The inventory of new single-family homes available for sale during the same period was about 150,000, or 4.4 months' worth.

A six months' supply is normally considered as a healthy balance between supply and demand. With the busy spring selling season around the corner, realtors and economists are worried about the supply squeeze.

"If we don't see more people listing their properties, I don't think we will see the home sales volume increase that we are accustomed to seeing," said Glenn Kelman, chief executive officer of online real estate group Redfin, based in Seattle.

"There are far more buyers than there are sellers on the market. We would have a huge boom spurred by low interest rates if there were more inventory on the market."

The National Association of realtors expects existing home sales to rise between 7-8 percent this spring from a year ago. For the full year it forecasts sales advancing 7 percent to an annual pace of about 5 million units. Sales are currently running at a 4.98 million-unit pace.

The flow of foreclosed homes coming on to the market, which had been both a source of supply and a key obstacle to the sector's recovery, has dropped significantly in recent months.

According to Kelman, supply was now mostly coming from homeowners and that was not much, as most of the homes were still worth less than what their owners owed banks.

Data from CoreLogic last week showed so-called shadow inventory - homes either in foreclosure or being held from the market by banks - dropped 15.4 percent to 2.2 million in January from a year ago. That was well below the cycle peak of 3 million units in January 2010.

Economists said while homes were still falling into foreclosure, delays with the paper work meant those homes were not coming onto the market. Even where they had been repossessed by the banks, they were also not hitting the market.

"Banks tend to remember the experience of 2008 when they rushed to sell off properties all at once and that caused a downward spiral in house prices," said Andres Carbacho-Burgos, an associate director at Moody's Analytics in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

"They are trying to be cautious about selling off too many properties all at once."

HOMES SELLING IN HOURS

The inventory crunch is most acute in areas like Washington D.C., New York, and the coastal California cities where, according to Kelman, "homes are selling in hours."

The months of supply in coastal California has dropped to 30 days from between six and eight months last year. Even in places like Atlanta and Philadelphia, where the housing market has been slow to recover, inventory is also tightening.

"The demand for properties is insane. The bidding wars that are going on, there is not enough inventory and it has become truly a seller's market again," said Neil Garfinkel, real estate attorney at Abrams Garfinkel Margolis Bergson in New York.

But in cities like Detroit, where the population is declining and vacant houses are everywhere, the housing recovery will probably not happen this year or even next year.

Despite expectations of a relatively quiet spring season, the housing recovery is not expected to step back, largely thanks to investors, who make up roughly a fifth of home sales and account for most of the cash sales.

Cash sales account for about a third of transactions. Wall Street investors, who were very active in the housing market over the past 1-1/2 years, are now competing with ordinary people looking to make money from real estate.

"They are buying whatever they can get their hands on. Before they were more selective," said Kelman.

The properties are repaired and rented out. While some of the big money has started to leave areas like Phoenix, Arizona as the foreclosure inventory gets depleted, Atlanta is seeing a jump in sales and prices because of the Wall Street investors.

"Investors will start to exit only after either foreclosure inventories are significantly depleted or sale discounts have fallen off so much that it's like buying a regularly priced home," said Moody's Analytics' Carbacho-Burgos.

Analysts and realtors saw little chance of a repeat of the housing market collapse.

"Back in 2007 we had very leveraged investors. They were buying a home that they would sell for a higher price in six months," said Redfin's Kelman. "That's not happening now, the investors we see now are coming in with cash."

Now, an Australia-led research team has demonstrated a novel idea for chasing down the massive marine mammals. To search for , the group dropped sonar buoys in the Ross Sea west of Antarctica, and listened for whale calls. They triangulated the whale's location from their calls, and then sailed to the right spot.

During the research cruise, the scientists photographed 57 blue whales, collected 23 skin biopsy samples and stuck on two satellite-tracking tags. They also spotted 11 pygmy blue whales and eight humpback whales, among a total 720 cetacean species (the group that includes whales, dolphins and porpoises).

"In many respects our expectations of what we could achieve have been exceeded," the scientists wrote on the expedition's blog.

The deep, resonating song of Antarctic blue whales travels hundreds of kilometers across the Southern Ocean, Brian Miller, of the Australian Antarctic Division and the lead marine mammal acoustician of the mission, said in a statement. The team returned with 626 hours of recordings, with 26,545 blue whale calls analyzed in real time. []

The whale'swill transmit never-before obtained data on how the whales feed near the edge of the Antarctic ice, marine biologist Virginia Andrews-Goff of the Australian Marine Mammals Center said in a statement.

The International Whaling Commission estimates the population of Antarctic blue whales is between 400 and 1,400 individuals. The leviathans were slaughtered to near extinction in the early 1900s by whalers, who took some 340,000 whales, according to a statement from the Australian government.

Researchers worldwide have usedfor decades, including blue whales, humpback whales and right whales. This is the first time that scientists have located whales for tagging and identification by identifying their positions with sonar, the statement said.

On top of strong earnings from the likes of Harley-Davidson, Southwest Airlines and Dow Chemical, the government said that unemployment benefit applications fall to 339,000, second-lowest level in 5 years.

That was better than most economists had expected and further tamped down apprehensions about a terrible jobs report from March.
