Even though he made the Capitals a perennial success over four years — winning 200 games faster than any coach in NHL history — he found his team in a tailspin and was dismissed Monday morning by general manager George McPhee, who said the players "were no longer responding" to their coach.
"It's like George said, sometimes you need a different voice, and for whatever reason it didn't work out in the end," Boudreau said. "And I think they made a decision that was the right decision at the time, and we'll just move on."
Boudreau led the Capitals to four consecutive division titles but couldn't find sustained success in the playoffs, failing to advance beyond the second round. His attempt to instill more accountability this season backfired — Washington was not only losing, the losses were becoming humiliating. Change was all but inevitable.
"Gee, every time we lost two in a row for the last year, people were saying it was going to be coming," Boudreau said. "You never think it was going to be coming, but we lost some games in the recent weeks by scores that we were not accustomed to. That hadn't happened to us ever before, so I didn't know where we were at or what was going to happen, but it wasn't fun."
Boudreau's approach failed to reinvigorate team captain Ovechkin, who was coming off a career-worst season and was off to a slow start this fall. The two-time league MVP was benched in the crucial final shifts of regulation in a game against the Anaheim Ducks on Nov. 1, although both coach and player quickly downplayed any kind of rift.
"I don't believe Alex was ever a problem," Boudreau said Wednesday. "I think he worked as hard and tried as hard as he could. I think it just didn't go well statistically for him, and when things don't go well statistically people try to put two and two together and they usually end up with five."
Boudreau said he "never once" brought up the idea of removing Ovechkin as captain.
Despite the disappointing results in the postseason, Boudreau's tenure has to be judged as a success, but he considers it more so because of the growth of the fan base than the won-loss record.
"The success part is the growing of hockey in the D.C. area from 5,000 people a game when I got here to the team getting good and this becoming a hockey town and having a waiting list for season tickets," he said. "All of those things really is the successful part and the most important part. I think the growth of hockey is what I'm really happy about."

A meeting Sunday in Atlanta of the presidents of the SEC schools ended with no action taken with respect to any prospective expansion candidates, including A&M, according to a statement from Florida president Bernie Machen, chair of the SEC's presidents and chancellors.
"The SEC Presidents and Chancellors met today and reaffirmed our satisfaction with the present 12 institutional alignment," the statement read. "We recognize, however, that future conditions may make it advantageous to expand the number of institutions in the league. We discussed criteria and process associated with expansion."

Machen's statement doesn't kill the Aggies' chances of eventually bolting the Big 12 for the SEC, but the SEC would likely then need to add another school in order to have seven in each of its divisions. Which school that might be is unknown.
Over the weekend, administrators at Clemson, Virginia Tech, Florida State and Missouri said there had been no discussions with the SEC. The first three schools are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Missouri is in the Big 12 with the Aggies.

Loftin was in College Station, Texas, Sunday but was briefed by SEC officials after the meeting, said Jason Cook, A&M's Vice President for Marketing and Communications.
Loftin later released a statement, which read: "As we have seen over the past several days, there has been a considerable amount of misinformation regarding these discussions and any associated timelines. The chairman of our board has indicated that the regents will proceed with tomorrow's agenda item, which authorizes the president of Texas A&M to take all actions related to athletic conference alignment.
"I will also accept Chairman Branch's invitation to participate in his committee's hearing on Tuesday. These are extremely complex issues, and it is imperative that we proceed methodically and in the best interests of Texas A&M."
The Big 12's remaining nine member schools say the door remains open for A&M to stay but that the conference will otherwise remain intact and move ahead without the Aggies, should they eventually leave.
The Big 12 doesn't have any kind of written membership contract with its 10 schools, according to a person familar with the league's processes. But after the conference almost broke up last summer, the 10 made a commitment to stay with the league for at least 10 years, and they were considered further bound by a 13-year Fox Sports television agreement to which they all agreed, the person said.
The TV deal is scheduled to go into effect next year.
Current league bylaws would require A&M to forfeit 90% of its revenues from conference payouts over the previous two years -- last year and the one upcoming -- if it leaves in 2012. That would be about $28 million.
However, Nebraska and Colorado, which left the Big 12 for the Big Ten and Pacific 12, respectively, were able to negotiate a reduced exit fee when they departed the league.
The Fox contract, worth a reported $90 million annually to the league, would have to be reworked, the person said, as it's based on a minimum number of games played by 10 schools.
