Spencer Paysinger hoped that Chase Blackburn's old notebook would help him this season. Instead, it just may help the Carolina Panthers counter the Giants' defense on Sunday.

Blackburn started at middle linebacker for the Giants last season, but he'll be on the other sideline on Sunday in Carolina. The veteran signed with the Panthers in the offseason, and while he's been limited to special teams duty so far in 2013, he likely shared some valuable secrets with the Panthers this week.

After all, Paysinger said Thursday, his note taking skills were once the stuff of legend. "I remember when he signed with Carolina (in May), I sent him a message," Paysinger said. "I said, 'Let me get your notebook so I can study.' Because the coaches always talk about how he's a master note taker."

The Giants weren't just concerned about Blackburn's knowledge of the offense this week, either. Special teams coordinator Tom Quinn added that Blackburn is "probably one of the smartest guys I've ever been around," and his knowledge of the Giants' return schemes could also hurt. "You do have to be aware that he does know all of the return schemes, coverage schemes and calls," Quinn said. "So you have to make adjustments that way."

Once the cerebral Blackburn left, the Giants were left to find a new defensive play caller. And they settled on Paysinger. The third year linebacker has called plays through the first two games, and defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said he's done "a nice job," even if he is inexperienced Panthers Greg Olsen Jersey in that role.

"He's (doing) on the job training, so to speak," Fewell said, "but I don't see any weaknesses in him. I thought he did a good job last week in communicating. I thought he did a good job the week before in communicating."

Still, Fewell indicated that he and Paysinger are still learning to work together.

"We're getting better," he said. "We're working to get better. I think we'll become better."

"We're in the state finals and they won 4 0 . so they've got to be pretty dang good," Delgado said with a grin afterward. "There's not one weak kid on their team. They possess the ball like I've never seen (a team do) this whole year. They put it to us really."

Latschar went a step further.

"They were probably one of the better high school teams I've ever seen play," he said of USC. "They had a team mentality that was unlike any other. They were good."

The Panthers (23 1 1) wasted little time proving it, dominating possession from the opening touch.

In fact, but for five huge saves from CV goalie Zach Rider in the first half, during which the Buckskins also had a sure goal cleared off the goal line by defender Evan Duffy, it could have gotten out of hand in a hurry.

After Joel Hart carried a ball down the left side and pushed a centering pass into the box with 20:39 remaining in the first half, Caruso was there to blast a rocket under the crossbar for a 1 0 USC lead.

"They moved the ball around very well," said Rider, who finished with 10 saves. "Probably better than we've seen all season."

Still, CV despite rarely getting the ball into their own attacking third somehow managed to control the damage for a while.

"They got that second one . " Hartlaub said. "And that became a big mountain to climb."

It didn't get much better for CV after the break.

"Tonight (the Panthers) were fantastic, they were the real deal," Hartlaub said. "I think all of our players put in a tremendous amount of energy and worked, they never quit, and they left it on the field. I can't be upset. The scoreline isn't flattering but what we did (this season) is fantastic."
