CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (Reuters) - South Korean rapper Psy said he "partied hard" when his dance number drew its first 10 million views on YouTube last summer. Little did he know "Gangnam Style" would become the most-viewed video in the online service's history, with a global following and nearly 1.6 billion views as of Thursday.

"I partied hard to celebrate 10 million views!" Psy told about 1,000 people at Harvard University on Thursday evening, as he recalled his reaction when the song took off, making him a cultural phenomenon and leading to meetings with Los Angeles record producers.

"This is so unrealistic!" he recalled thinking.

Formally dressed and speaking in sometimes-halting English, Psy spoke for more than an hour and occasionally lapsed into signature dance moves such as grasping the reins of an imaginary trotting horse.

Psy's talk was partly a homecoming as he recalled his days as a student in Boston in the mid-1990s. But it was also a seminar about the star's surprise worldwide cultural appeal and the economic influence of East Asian culture.

Harvard professor Alexander Zahlten introduced Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, as a global figure who has shown the ability of Korean music stars, video-game programmers and other entertainment figures to find overseas popularity through Internet channels.

"He's a global citizen, and in turn influences people all over the world," Zahlten said. "He's deeply connected to digital culture."

After "Gangnam Style" set records, the video for Psy's follow-up song "Gentleman" received more than 20 million hits in the first 24 hours after its release last month, easily beating the previous record of 8 million views for Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" in the first 24 hours.

Psy, 35, told the audience at the Ivy League school that music trumps national divides. "Music makes everyone united," he said. "Something beyond language." At some performances, he said, "I'm so proud. The crowd doesn't know what the lyrics are about, but they look so happy!"

Later he said the word for "style" conveyed similar meanings in all languages, and that he wrote the lyrics for "Gentleman" hoping they would find a similar worldwide resonance. "Really , it was linguistics," he said.

Psy also poked fun at his own less-than-stellar academic record. He said his nickname in college was "WWF" for his grades, "withdraw, withdraw, fail." He said he kept thinking big and poked fun at his robust midsection.

"I dreamed someday, some Korean artist would be well-known in the U.S.," he said. "I dreamed about it but didn't dream that was me, because as you see I have a very special body type."

(Reuters) - The Internal Revenue Service has rejected a reward claim made by a whistleblower, former banker Joseph Insinga, who had sued the agency in a closely watched case.

In a letter dated April 15, the IRS told Insinga that he was not entitled to a reward. A copy of the letter was provided to Reuters by his attorney Andrew Carr.

The information Insinga gave to the IRS in May 2007 about several companies, which he alleged dodged taxes, did not result in collection of any additional taxes, the IRS said.

Insinga will appeal the rejection, Carr told Reuters by email.

Insinga had sued the IRS last year, trying to force it to announce a determination on his claims after years of being kept in the dark about the status of his case.

Other whistleblowers and lawyers had hoped the Insinga case would bring more clarity to how the IRS handles whistleblower claims, said Bryan Skarlatos, a tax lawyer at the firm of Kostelanetz & Fink who represents taxpayers and whistleblowers.

A 2006 overhaul of the IRS whistleblower program gave informants involved in it the right to appeal a rejection to the Tax Court. Insinga has 30 days to file. So far, no such appeal has been successful.

Dean Zerbe, a lawyer who represents whistleblowers, said Insinga's case has been helpful. "The court showed that they are not going to take the IRS's word as gospel," Zerbe said.

The IRS has been criticized for moving too slowly to embrace the whistleblower program. At an April 10 hearing about new rules for the program, IRS officials were told by lawyers that informants worry their tips are not welcome.

At a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller said whistleblowers are "vital" to tax collecting where "there are blindspots for us ... in the offshore area."

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew may not have succeeded yet in getting a grand budget bargain with Congress, but at least his handwriting is improving. And it is expected to be even better when the time comes for him to affix his "Jacob Lew" to the nation's currency.

Lew's handwriting was so bad before that it even drew presidential notice.

President Barack Obama joked in January when he nominated Lew for the Treasury post that he had never noticed before how illegible Lew's signature was. Lew served as Obama's chief of staff and also as director of the Office of Management and Budget before taking the Treasury job.

Lew's scrawl as OMB director consisted of a series of loops that bore no resemblance to his name.

"Jack assured me that he is going to work to make at least one letter legible in order not to debase our currency," the president joked.

Recent examples of Lew's handwriting show his practice is paying off. All the letters of Lew's last name could be made out in his signature on the annual report of the Financial Stability Council, which came out in late April.

While Lew is still a long way from winning any penmanship honors, Treasury officials say stay tuned. Lew still has time before he has to provide the official signature that will go on all of the nation's currency, something that he is expected to do later this year.

PHOENIX (Reuters) - The largest Native American tribe in the United States is seeking to dub the classic 1977 movie "Star Wars" movie in Navajo as a way to help preserve its traditional language.

Fluent Navajo speakers have been invited for a casting call in Window Rock in northern Arizona on Friday and Saturday to dub the roles of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia and others, tribal officials said.

Manuelito Wheeler, the director of the Navajo Nation Museum, said he first came up with the idea 13 years ago as a way to preserve the consonant-rich Navajo language, believed to be spoken by about 170,000 people, according to government figures.

"We thought this would be a provocative and effective way to help try to preserve the language and at the same time preserve the culture," Wheeler told Reuters. "What better movie to do this than Star Wars?'"

Wheeler said he believes the popular science fiction movie will resonate with the Navajo people with its universal theme of good versus evil.

The project was given the go-ahead about 18 months ago.

A team of five Navajos then spent 36 hours translating the original script, hampered by the many words in English that do not translate word for word into Navajo. Instead, several words in Navajo are sometimes needed to convey the proper meaning.

For example, he said there is no direct translation for "May the force be with you," one of the most recognizable lines in the movie.

Wheeler declined to reveal the Navajo words used for that and other catch-phrases, as a way to "build momentum" leading up to the movie.

"What we want to avoid is like the Kung Fu movies of the past where the lips didn't match up with the words they were speaking," he said.

Casting for the voices of the movie's major roles will be held at the museum in Window Rock. About 75 people have registered to audition.

The finished movie, which will include English subtitles, will be shown during the tribe's Fourth of July celebration in Window Rock and again in September at the Navajo Nation Fair.

Obama this year proposed paying for expanded pre-K by nearly doubling the federal tax on cigarettes. He says you get two benefits from the tax: Lower health care costs and improved early education.

Obama says early education shouldn't be an add-on to the U.S. education system, but part of the larger strategy. He says pre-K has the biggest, in his words, "bang for the buck" in improving educational outcomes.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After battling grandiose villains and teaming up with other superheroes, it's back-to-basics for "Iron Man" in the third installment of the multi-million-dollar franchise featuring Robert Downey Jr.

"Iron Man 3," which opens in most of the world this Friday and on May 3 in the United States, has Downey reprising his role of superhero industrialist Tony Stark from the first two films as well as last summer's "The Avengers."

Collectively, the three films have made about $2.7 billion at the global box office in the past five years.

"Iron Man 3," which continues Stark's storyline from both sets of Marvel franchises, centers around the evil extremist known as The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) who is hell-bent on destroying the United States.

When The Mandarin destroys Stark's personal world as well as his superhero suit, Stark must begin from scratch, rebuilding his suit, freeing the woman he loves and saving the country from destruction.

Bombs go off in crowds of people and buildings are destroyed in the film that the cast says reflects real-life threats.

"We do live in an unsafe world, that's the truth," Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Downey's love interest Pepper Potts, told reporters at a news conference this week.

"I don't think there is anything wrong with presenting that idea. We can't lie to our children and pretend the world is perfect."

Marvel's first self-financed film, 2008's "Iron Man," became a global phenomenon, transformed Downey into a superstar and set off a chain of action movies that spawned other franchises, culminating in last year's crossover film, "The Avengers."

BOWING TO CHINA

But in 2009, Walt Disney Co. bought Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion, and "Iron Man 3" is Disney's first release in the franchise.

In a first, "Iron Man 3" teamed with China-based DMG Entertainment and shot additional scenes that will only run in the Chinese version of the film, a nod to the growing importance of the Chinese movie market to Hollywood.

The cast and filmmakers have kept quiet on details of the extra scenes. But director Shane Black, who also co-wrote the script, said he was thrilled to work with "one of the single, fastest-emerging box office environments in the world."

Promotional duties have also become more creative, with Downey doing a two-week global tour for the film by making stops in Korea, Beijing, Moscow, Munich, Paris and London.

Downey said the storyline took other risks, including 11-year-old actor Ty Simpkins playing Stark's sidekick - the first time a child has been prominently featured in the "Iron Man" films.

"(Black's) idea of a superhero running into a little kid in heartland America, I think, wound up being a wise choice, and a calculated risk," said Downey.

He acknowledged the pressure that follows two successful films, saying "usually the third of any (movie) struggles to even meet the first two, let alone the first one."

But Paltrow said all three films work because of the similarities between the off-screen Downey and his brash-but-vulnerable Stark, and also owing to the actor's persistence.

"One particular strength of Robert's that we don't see on screen is the fact that he's always asking, 'What is the big picture here? How can we make it feel real?'" Paltrow said.

"I think that's why the movies keep working. They're not a weaker carbon copy of the one before."

The German's 6-2 6-4 victory at the Sony Open proved again the widely held belief that but for chronic injury problems and bad luck, grand slam titles would surely have come his way.

Haas's classical, easy-on-the-eye, style took him to world number two in May 2002 and for a while he looked like the natural adversary for the emerging Roger Federer.

His progress was stalled, however, first when his parents were in a serious motorcycle accident that left his dad in a coma for weeks and then when two shoulder surgeries kept him off the court for more than a year.

He has been playing catch-up ever since, but rather than any bitterness, Haas's previous misfortune has taught him to enjoy moments like this week's masterclass against Djokovic - a player who has become almost unbeatable on hard courts.

"Playing against Novak and coming out on top at this time of my career, it's unbelievable," Haas, who missed 11 months after hip surgery in 2010, told reporters.

"It goes up as one of the best wins of my career.

"There were times when I wouldn't have believed (that I could get back to this level), no way.

"When I came back after my hip surgery it was grueling. It was nine months, 12 months before I actually felt like I could train again and get in better shape and sort of maybe feel like I can move and give myself a chance to at least try to go for some victories again that I would enjoy."

LOST TIME

Watching Haas beat Djokovic, and the way he beat Federer in the grasscourt final at Halle last year, it is impossible to understand how the German has never reached a grand slam final.

Semi-finals at the Australian Open in 1999 and 2007 and a similar run at Wimbledon in 2009 are his best attempts and while his chances of bettering that may be over, Haas is clearly enjoying making up for all the lost time.

Back at 18th in the world, having less than two years ago held no ranking whatsoever, Haas believes he is playing some of the best tennis of his career.

"Somewhere in the middle of last year, sometime in April, May, my body sort of adjusted a lot and I could train," said Haas, who has career wins over nine of the last 10 players to hold the world number one ranking although before Djokovic not a current one since Andre Agassi in 1999.

"Luckily I'm a guy that likes to work out and get in the best shape that I possibly can, my body allowing. Right now I feel pretty good, as good as I have in a long time, and, you know, I just never give up."

Haas will face Frenchman Gilles Simon on Wednesday when he will be attempting to reach the semi-final of a Masters Series event for the first time since Paris in 2006.

"This is what I keep playing for," he said. "These are the moments I appreciate the most, going on those big stadiums, big stages, playing against the best people in the world."
