include hurricanes and typhoons, storms that form in the world's tropical latitudes and spin ferociously around a center called an eye. Only eight named tropical cyclones hit Hawaii between 1979 and 2010, said scientists at the University of Hawaii's International Pacific Research Center. But the researchers' new model predicts a two-to-three-fold increase in such storms between 2075 and 2099. The study is detailed in the May 5 issue of the journal Nature Climate Change.

The results illustrate how global warming can lead to strong regional climate differences, the researchers said. "Computer models run with global warming scenarios generally project a decrease in tropical cyclones worldwide. This, though, may not be what will happen with local communities," lead study author Hiroyuki Murakami said in a statement.

In the Pacific Ocean, tropical cyclones that could threatentypically arise off the west coast of Mexico from June through November. But lack of moisture over the Pacific and strong westerly winds usually stop the storms from reaching the islands.

But the new model predicts that these westerly winds called aand similar to the polar jet stream will shift northward in the next 60 years, removing the roadblock. The projections also suggest the eastern Pacific Ocean will warm, giving storms more fuel in the form of rising moisture.

"The yearly number we project, however, still remains very low," study co-author Bin Wang said in a statement. Between 1979 and 2003, on average, one tropical cyclone pummeled the islands every four years. The researchers expect that number will double or triple.

The storm projections are based on athat includes the history of North Pacific tropical cyclones and a temperature rise of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius).

Aldrin's new book "" lands in bookstores today (May 7) to chart out a course that could put astronauts on the surface of Mars by 2035. The famed Apollo 11 moonwalker met with SPACE.com this week to discuss his "unified space vision" for Mars exploration.

"The mission really is establishing permanence on another planet in the solar system," Monday (May 6).

Aldrin's plan calls for NASA and the United States to focus technology development efforts for a manned Mars mission while still remaining a global leader in human spaceflight. The plan does not completely forgo a return of astronauts to the moon, but does state that NASA should not send astronauts there. Instead, his plan states, other countries like China, India and Russia can focus on exploration of the lunar surface while NASA fine-tunes the tech needed for Mars trips from stable Lagrange points near the moon. []

Aldrin penned "Mission to Mars" with veteran space reporter Leonard David, a former SPACE.com writer and frequent contributor, to lay out a plan that could carry humanity to the Red Planet on an accessible timescale. The book is Aldrin's fourth, and is published by National Geographic Books.

Under Aldrin's plan, an early expeditionary trip to Mars' largest moon Phobos by 2033 could test the vital habitation modules needed for Red Planet missions, as well as make use of telepresence to remotely control rovers on the planet's surface, Aldrin said.

"It turns out that just a good test of the interplanetary hab module, I think No. 3 or No. 4 should get on to Mars in preparation for transit to Phobos, as a control center," he added.

Deep-space cruisers, Mars cyclers based on Aldrin's research into cyclic spacecraft trajectories, would serve as the primary ferries to and from the Red Planet under the astronaut's vision.

The ultimate goal, Aldrin said, is a permanent Mars base that would truly make humanity a two-planet species. He said he would love to see a presidential commitment to continuous manned Mars exploration by 2019 the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 moon landing by himself and Neil Armstrong.

"Within two decades, to have Americans pioneering the permanence on another planet in this solar system can you imagine Earth history?"said. "The big movement from Earth to another planet it's a big deal."

Aldrin isn't alone in his quest to push humanity toward the Red Planet. This week, NASA scientists and researchers from around the world are discussing the major challenges in sending humans to Mars at the Humans 2 Mars Summit in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, NASA chief Charles Bolden told those attending the science conference that

"Interest in sending humans to Mars I think has never been higher," Bolden said.

Meanwhile, at least two private groups the Inspiration Mars Foundation and Mars One are working on very different visions to send humans to the Red Planet. Inspiration Mars is an audacious project led by American entrepreneur Dennis Tito, the world's first space tourist, to send two astronauts (preferably a married couple) on a flyby mission around Mars in 2018.

The Mars One project is led by Bas Lansdorp of the Netherlands, and seeks to establish a . To do that, pioneering astronauts would have to sign on for a one-way trip to the Red Planet.

As of today, about 78,000 people have applied for the Mars One colony project. Lansdorp and his team hope to ultimately receive 500,000 applicants before beginning the long search for the first four-person Mars One crew.

If the designer's aim was to get home the idea that in fashion it's not what is worn, but how it's worn, that affects style, it was a success: Each of the 15 ensembles had a completely different look depending on the room.

The season started about a month earlier than usual, sparking concerns it might turn into the worst in a decade. It ended up being very hard on the elderly, but was moderately severe overall, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Six of the pediatric deaths were reported in the last week, and it's possible there will be more, said the CDC's Dr. Michael Jhung said Friday.

Roughly 100 children die in an average flu season. One exception was the swine flu pandemic of 2009-2010, when 348 children died.

The CDC recommends that all children ages 6 months and older be vaccinated against flu each season, though only about half get a flu shot or nasal spray.

All but four of the children who died were old enough to be vaccinated, but 90 percent of them did not get vaccinated, CDC officials said.

This year's vaccine was considered effective in children, though it didn't work very well in older people.And the dominant flu strain early in the season was one that tends to cause more severe illness.

The government only does a national flu death count for children. But it does track hospitalization rates for people 65 and older, and those statistics have been grim.

In that group, 177 out of every 100,000 were hospitalized with flu-related illness in the past several months. That's more than 2 1/2 times higher than any other recent season.

This flu season started in early December, a month earlier than usual, and peaked by the end of year. Since then, flu reports have been dropping off throughout the country.

"We appear to be getting close to the end of flu season," Jhung said.

Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the world's leading conceptual artists, covered one panel of the pyramid with the reflective symbol that's meant as a defiant political gesture: Politicians and society must look at follies of excess that led to the global financial crisis.

It had spectators gawping some in awe, others in confusion.

"It's fantastic. It's like an eye looking out onto what Paris has become: finance, greed," one spectator, Fabrice Bing, said.

Another onlooker, Anthony Cuvillier, was less certain: "I don't know what it means, but it definitely looks cool."

Pistoletto, one of the main exponents of "Arte Povera," an influential movement that uses poor and everyday materials in art to protest against consumerism, has no doubt as to his art's message.

"Politicians should look at themselves in the mirror, and learn to take responsibility for this terrible mess and think of the infinite future ahead for humanity," he told The Associated Press.

Pistoletto is the first artist the Louvre has invited to work on the outside of the pyramid, the large glass and metal structure, designed by architect I. M. Pei, that was commissioned nearly 30 years ago to great controversy by former President Francois Mitterrand.

The installation continues deep inside the museum in more than a dozen separate works that the artist has "hidden" among the sprawling classical antiquities, made from mirrors and secondhand rags.

"It's a mystery. The public is asked to come on a treasure hunt," said curator Marie-Laure Bernadac, who agreed that the works will appeal to the many tourists who still come and see the pyramids because of the mysterious associations from Dan Brown's best-selling book "The Da Vinci Code."

But the works also have their fair dose of humor.

One work near the "Mona Lisa," consists of mirror with an image of a tourist taking a photo.

"I'm also poking fun... I'm trying to say that people don't look with their eyes any more, they just consume and take photos of the Mona Lisa because it's famous. I'm trying to make people think," Pistoletto said.

One of the strongest works is a marble statue of Venus, being pushed back by a gargantuan heap of rags. Pistoletto said it was a metaphor for how all the refuse in the world has cluttered and polluted nature.

"They're secondhand rags, but they're all very well washed," he joked."Don't forget, this is the Louvre."

Pistoletto's "Year 1, Heaven on Earth" will run until Sept. 2.

We know little about President Barack Obamas new Commission on Election Administration except for its structure, as outlined in the , and the names of its two appointed co-chairs: Obama's former counsel Bob Bauer and Republican attorney Ben Ginsberg, who worked for Mitt Romney.

But while it has yet to explain its methodology or get together a full staff (the executive order directs that no more than nine members are to be appointed) the commissionan idea born on election night 2012 when Obama declared we "have to fix" long lines at the pollsis about to get to work.

Steve Croley, deputy White House counsel, told Yahoo News the White House is gearing up to announce the committee's full roster next month and set the group to work. The committee, he said, will be a mix of individuals including "several people who basically run elections for a living" at the state, county or local levels, in addition to those working on the private side. No other details were offered about commissioners.

The commission, not the White House, will set the agenda, Croley added. And part of its work will include significant outreach to state and local election officials and administrators, academics and others experienced in elections. A report will be given to the president six months from its first meeting on how do we improve the experience of voting, Croley said.

Funds and housekeeping for all presidential commissions are handled through the General Services Administration, but no money was requested for the commission in the presidents proposal or in GSAs budget request. Croley said that the commission is expected to be very low budget.

The 2012 elections were clouded with stories of eight-hour voting experiences in Florida, polling places closing early due to the inability to handle voter volume, long lines in Virginia, voting machine issues in Pennsylvania and Colorado, voter roll problems in Ohio and balloting problems in Arizona.

"We can fix this. And we will," Obama said in his State of the Union speech in February when he announced the co-chairs for the commission. "The American people demand it, and so does our democracy."

The commissioners will drive the agenda. The two co-chairs declined to be interviewed for this article, choosing through a spokesman to defer to the White House until the commission is underway. Croley said once the commission is formed, it will take a hands-off approach and allow the co-chairs to lead the process.

Per , the commission is supposed to examine voting problems highlighted in the 2012 election, and specifically examine potential voting obstacles to members of the military, overseas voters, voters with disabilities and voters with limited English proficiency." Several potential areas of study are outlined in the executive orderincluding training of polling workers, the operation of polling places and voting machines, ballot simplicity, and overseas ballotingbut these are listed merely as suggestions.

Voting rights advocates have cheered the formation of the commission and the idea behind it, but with so little known about what the commission will do and how it will function, much skepticism remains about the commissions potential or staying power.

At the very least, voting rights advocates say, the well-known and well-respected partisan co-chairs have the potential to send a strong message.

"I think its structurally set up so that if they do in fact come up with some good recommendations, that it will be very powerfully received," said Wendy Weiser, director of the Brennan Center for Justice's Democracy Program, which promotes voter rights.

Melanie Sloan, executive director of government watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, added, If they could come to agreement and come up with some joint recommendations, that would be very meaningful because it'd be hard for anybody on either side to argue strongly against them."

But Sloan questioned exactly how motivated and involved the two busy co-chairs will be in their new positions.

"I do not have my hopes up," Sloan added. "It could be great, again, because Bauer and Ginsberg are highly respected. It could also be one of those things where there's a big announcement and there's very little follow-through."

"Croley conceded that yes, the proof will be in the final result, but at the outset, the co-chairs are "extremely motivated for this not to be viewed or become a commission that produces a paper report that sits on a shelf and collects dust." It will be a "hit-the-ground-running commission which takes its work and mission very seriously he said.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia coach Robbie Deans was unsurprised by the British and Irish Lions squad selection and expects the tourists to play to traditional northern hemisphere strengths of power and tactical kicking in three tests that will give his players the "ultimate rugby experience".

In return, Deans promised a distinct gameplan for his Wallabies and expects to be able to call on 110-cap flanker George Smith as well as troubled back Kurtley Beale to take on the tourists in the series in June and July.

New Zealander Deans also looks likely to employ the power and pace of code-hopping fullback Israel Folau after describing the former rugby league international as a potential "legend" in union.

As for the Lions, Deans said he had expected compatriot Warren Gatland to pick a hefty core of Welshmen in his squad -there were 15 named - particularly after their 30-3 hammering of England in the last match of the Six Nations.

"I guess when you name a squad of that size, there's never going to be too many surprises," Deans told a news conference at the Sydney Football Stadium.

"They've gone back to what they know, which is no great surprise.

"They'll play to their strengths, it'll be very much gain-line orientated and if they get past that they might try to play a bit, but I don't think they'll play a lot behind it."

Deans said he did not think the selection of just two specialist flyhalves in Jonny Sexton and Owen Farrell was a risk and expected Jonny Wilkinson to be on the first flight to Australia should either suffer an injury.

"They know they've got a great backstop ready to go," he said of England's 2003 World Cup hero.

The versatile Beale, who ended last year as Wallabies flyhalf, returned to practice with the Melbourne Rebels this week after being suspended indefinitely for punching two team mates in late March.

"He's very good," said Deans. "I think the light's come on for him, so to speak. I spoke to him last night, he's going through some routines dealing with the history and by all accounts it's going well.

"The critical thing is Kurtley dealing with life, not whether he plays a test match or not. If he deals with that, he'll deal with (playing) easily, what he does in-game he does instinctively."

'ULTIMATE RUGBY EXPERIENCE'

Folau scored a fine individual try for the New South Wales Waratahs against South Africa's Bulls last weekend and Deans said the Australian Rugby Union were desperate to keep him in the 15-man game.

"Israel does some things that no one else can do," he said. "It's amazing what he can do after just 10 games. Whatever happens let's hope he sticks around because he'll become an absolute legend of the game."

Openside flanker Smith has already been afforded that status and played a key role in Australia's 2-1 series victory over the Lions in 2001.

Deans said negotiations with his Japanese club over Smith's availability were continuing.

Asked after the news conference how talks they were going, Deans whipped out his mobile phone and showed a small group of reporters a text he had just received saying there were just a few small details to be tidied up.

"I spoke to him and he's keen," said Deans. "He's just class and he's just built for it. He's incredibly resilient and he never backs off the physical confrontation."

That will be a key factor in a series Deans expects to be played with a passion few of his players have experienced before as evidenced, he thought, by the Wales-England match which ended the Six Nations.

"It was brutal and it was relentless for 80 minutes," he said.

"It will be a context that our blokes have never experienced. Some of our players have experienced World Cup rugby, but I tell you the ante goes up even further.

"This is the ultimate rugby experience."

Deans will name the first 25 players in his squad on May 19, adding six more on June 11. The Lions play the Barbarians in Hong Kong on June 1 and arrive in Australia the following day.
