Week 9 NFL

Week 9 NFL picks against the spread for the Sun

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers (17) kneels in prayer with Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Clay Harbor (86), defensive end Tyson Alualu (93), and running back Justin Forsett (21) after an NFL football game in Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013.

By Case Keefer (contact)

Related coverage NBA by the Las Vegas odds: Locking in 8 season win total bets College football by the odds: Vegas picks and preview of Week 9 NFL by the Vegas odds: Sports book preview of the NFC NFL by the Vegas odds: Sports book preview of the AFC The Weekly has you covered on betting the NFL Talking Points blog Sports section

The two divisions are at opposite ends of the league's hierarchy, and not in the way anyone expected. At 22 8 straight up and 18 9 3 against the spread, the AFC West is the NFL's toughest set of four teams.

The NFC East is just as clearly the worst at 11 20 straight up and 15 16 against the spread. Those records are fattened up from the teams' head to head meetings, as the AFC West has gone 9 1 straight up, 7 3 against the spread when facing the NFC East this year.

Four more matchups remain between the divisions, with two taking place during Sunday's slate of week 9 games. kickoff, while the San Diego Chargers visit the Washington Redskins in an early game installed as a pick 'em.

Two went with the home team, calling for the Redskins to defend their FedEx Field with a win and cover for only the second time this season. game on the other side of the country.

For the year, the Eastern time zone hasn't lived up to its reputation of giving the Pacific based teams fits. Teams from the far West are 5 1 against the spread and 4 2 straight up when playing on the opposite coast.

The Chargers have already prevailed twice in the situation, beating the Eagles 33 30 as 7.5 point underdogs in week 2 before striking the Greg Robinson Rams Jersey Jaguars 24 6 as 7.5 point favorites two Sundays ago.

Recent work by SportsInsights, however, found that the blabber about West Coast teams traveling east was more than just noise. Over the past eight years, according to the article, teams from the Pacific time zone are just 44 57 against the spread when losing three hours.

The record falls all the way to 16 38 against the spread when the team is coming off a win, as the Chargers are in this instance. Betting against San Diego this season hasn't been a wise move, though.

At 5 1 1 against the spread, the Chargers fall behind only the NFC East leading Dallas Cowboys, who are 7 1 versus the number despite being only 4 4 straight up, as the most profitable team to bet on in 2013.

The San Diego offense has experienced a resurgence under first year coach Mike McCoy, ranking third in the NFL according to Football Outsiders' DVOA ratings. It's the best that unit has performed since 2009, when the Chargers went 13 3 to earn a first round bye in the playoffs.

Philip Rivers is playing at an even higher level this year. He's second in DVOA among quarterbacks, putting together a career year according to both advanced metrics and traditional statistics. A deep receiving corps, which featured Eddie Royal scoring five touchdowns in the opening two weeks and rookie Keenan Allen recently having back to back 100 yard games, has certainly helped.

Contrary to what many believe, Washington's offense isn't the biggest reason for its underwhelming 2 5 straight up and against the spread record. Even with Robert Griffin III initially looking rusty coming off knee surgery, the offense ranks right in the middle of the league at No. 15 in DVOA.

Some better rushing games from Griffin along with the emergence of rookie tight end Jordan Reed has helped that mark in recent weeks. The defense remains the issue.

Washington ranks 27th in defensive DVOA, five spots ahead of dead last San Diego. The over/under is the highest on the board at a towering 51.5 points for a reason.

Seven of 10 AFC West vs. NFC East games this year, incidentally, have gone over the total.

Check below for all of the Sun's week 9 picks against the spread. Games are listed in order of kickoff time.

Envision Working Together

Ravens Could chi flat irons Envision Working Together

NEW ORLEANS Working separately, John and Jim Harbaugh each guided their team to the Super Bowl. They will be on opposite sidelines Sunday, John as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens and Jim with the San Francisco 49ers.

Imagine how effective they could be if working together.

At their joint news conference Friday, someone asked the brothers if they would consider teaming up if either should be forced out of his current post.

"No question about it," John said. "We've had that conversation in the past. It just never really worked out timing wise. I'd love to work for Jim. It would be the greatest thing in the world."

Jim, coach of the San Francisco 49ers, said, "Definitely, I would work for him."

Super Bowl tradition dictates that the coaches meet with the media separately two days before the Super Bowl. That custom was altered Friday because, after all, two brothers have never before coached against each other in the Super Bowl.

Wearing a dark suit, white shirt, striped tie and laced business shoes, John settled into a director's chair behind a Ravens helmet. Jim, wearing a 49ers hat, a sweat shirt, khaki pants and running shoes, sat in an identical chair behind a San Francisco helmet.

Calling it "an exciting moment," John ticked off the names of family members in attendance, including his parents. They posed for pictures with grandfather Joe Cipiti on the stage afterward, too.

Jack Harbaugh, their father, was a successful college coach. His sons followed in his footsteps, but on different paths. There was one time, however, when the routes nearly merged.

"We almost made it happen at Stanford at one time," John said. "It would be an honor to have him on the staff. He's a great coach. You always try to get great coaches, and there are none better than Jim Harbaugh, and I mean that seriously. There's no better coach in the National Football League than this guy right here."

To which Jim added, "Well, Jack Harbaugh."

The family coaching tree could run even deeper one day. Jim's son, Jay, works for John as a coaching intern with the Ravens.

"He's far better than we've anticipated, and I knew he would be great at what he does," John said.

The brothers obviously had a lot of fun with the situation, joking with each other and sometimes acting like a comedy team.

Someone asked them to list their commonalities and philosophical differences.

"I would be hard pressed to spell philosophical right now," Jim said.

"I know he can't spell commonalities," John said, not missing a beat.

Although Jack Harbaugh has received much of the credit for molding the boys into coaches, the brothers revealed that their mother, Jackie, also had a great deal of influence on their growth into men.

"There is no one in the family who has more competitive fire than my mother. She competes like a maniac. She has just always believed in us, and I think that is the most important thing to me. She believed in me, John, and Joanie, and took us to games and played catch with us, shot baskets with us, and just believed in us."

"No one would fight harder for us than our mom, no matter what the situation was, or teach us how to have each other's back and be there for one another," John said. "We may have been talking football with dad in the basement, but mom was talking about other things. There were a lot of things going on in our world during the 70s, and Mom was always tuned in on those kinds of things."

Someone asked the brothers whether they considered how they will handle the postgame handshake. Jim Harbaugh enraged Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz for giving him a quick handshake and a hard backslap after a 2011 game, but that certainly won't be an issue Sunday night.

"I've given absolutely no consideration to the postgame hand shake or bear hug or anything else," John said. "I haven't thought about that for one second. Have you, Jim?"

Super Bowl I Green Bay Packers 35, Kansas City Chiefs 10JAN. 15, 1967 (Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles) Commissioner Pete Rozelle, left, presents the trophy to Green Bay Packers Coach Vince Lombardi after they beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I.
