A day after the verse exploded in reaction to Mitt Romney's vow to fire Big Bird by cutting federal funding to PBS, Sesame Street declined to enter the political fray, turning down requests from TV talk shows for an appearance by the giant yellow avian.

But others voiced support on social media and elsewhere, reigniting a debate about taxpayer funding of public broadcasting. And reaction reached down to the show's pintsized viewers: 8yearold Cecelia Crawford of Alabama sent a letter to the Romney campaign, obtained by the Huffington Post, that urged it to protect "my favorite show on earth."

"People are certainly talking about it," says PBS spokeswoman Anne Bentley. "Moms, parents, teachers and educators have been vocal in their support today."

It's not the first time Republican candidates and congressmen have targeted federal appropriations, totaling $445 million this year, to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; it's a frequent target for budgetminded lawmakers.

But Romney's offhand remarks in a discussion about the deficit radiated as he promised that, if elected, he'd cut funding. "I like PBS . I love Big Bird," he said, "but I'm not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for."

Technically, the funding does not go directly to PBS or NPR; instead, it's sent to NPR outlets and PBS' 179 local stations around the country to help pay member fees in exchange for the right to air their programming.

"What it would really affect is our stations' ability to stay on the air," Bentley says. Such grants represent an average of 15% of stations' operating budgets, and up to 50% for some in rural areas. "They're really in jeopardy of going dark if they don't receive funding."

But PBS provides the home for Sesame Street, a muchpraised preschool program that began airing in 1969 and is among its toprated kids shows. It's produced and funded by Sesame Workshop, a nonprofit organization, and the perception that taxpayer dollars are going to a group that sells untold numbers of Tickle Me Elmo dolls is "misleading," says executive VP Sherrie Westin. The show receives no direct federal funding.

"We raise the vast majority of our funding from licensing revenues, corporate sponsorships and philanthropic donations," Westin says. Even so, "PBS is our longtime distribution partner, and without them we couldn't reach all children in the country with educational, commercialfree programming."

Two of the biggest complaints about Microsoft's mobile OS rebootno multitasking for thirdparty apps, and no cutting and pastingwill be fixed before the year is out, with the initial cutandpaste update slated to arrive next month.

Speaking at Microsoft's Mobile World Congress keynote in Barcelona on Monday, Steve Ballmer promised that the first of two patches for Windows Phone 7the one that adds cut and paste functionality, as well as tweaks supporting handsets on CDMA networks, such as those run by Sprint and Verizon Wirelesswill be coming in early March.

Meanwhile, a second, patch is due in the second half of this yearno word on exactly whenand will add a slew of new features, including multitasking for thirdparty apps, cloudbased storage for Office documents, Twitter integration into Windows Phone 7's hub (which, for now, only taps into Facebook), and a revamped mobile browser based on Internet Explorer 9.

Interestingly enough, Ballmer didn't unveil any new Windows Phone 7 handsets during Monday's keynote, although Microsoft did promise that handsets for Sprint and Verizon will be soon. How soon? Good question.

Current Windows Phone 7 handsets already support multitasking for native Windows Phone apps (like the Zune music player), but the upcoming patch will finally enable multitasking and fastapp switching for thirdparty applications. Pressing and holding the button will call up a series of tiles showing recently used apps; just tap one to switch, All Things Digital's Ina Fried reports.

The Windows Phone 7 browser will also be getting a muchneeded shot in the arm, with the new version to be based on Microsoft's stillinbeta IE 9 desktop browser. That means HTML5 support is at last on the way, along with hardwareaccelerated graphics.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. If Aaron Rodgers has his way, he would like to play quarterback for the Green Bay Packers through at least the 2020 season, maybe beyond.

"I've had eight great years there, the last five as a starter," Rodgers said of his career in Green Bay. "Hopefully I can give them another eightplus years of playing at a high level."

Rodgers is enjoying his offseason this weekend on California's iconic Monterey Peninsula. He is competing in the AT Pebble Beach National ProAm golf tournament, formerly known as the Bing Crosby, and is paired with PGA Tour professional John Mallinger.

Rodgers' current contract expires following the 2014 season, but he understands there is considerable interest in when he will receive a contract extension.

"We'll see what happens with that, I'm not stressing about it," Rodgers said. "I think the Packers would like me to be around for a few more years, and I'd love to finish my career there."

Rodgers earned NFL MVP honors in 2011 and was named Super Bowl MVP two years ago after leading the Packers to a championship.

Getting the Packers back to the big game is no small task, especially with the San Francisco 49ers coming back to prominence in the NFC, but Rodgers believes strongly in the principle of timing in the playoffs.

"We just got to put it all together at the right time," Rodgers said. "We see these teams most of the time, they go into the playoffs playing well, and they keep it rolling. Baltimore this year, I think they lost three of the last four (regularseason games) coming in, so I think they just found the right recipe."

To Rodgers, the Ravens' resurgence during the playoffs was assisted by one man.

"They got Ray Lewis back and kind of got reenergized," he said. "(Winning the Super Bowl) is about being healthy at the right time and playing the right way."

Rodgers was impressed by the closing effort of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco in the big game.

"Joe had a great postseason, and now he's got to be considered among the top guys winning the Super Bowl," Rodgers said.

There are some question marks that surround retaining Packer personnel this offseason. Rodgers is hoping veteran wide receiver Greg Jennings will be one of those players that stays in Green Bay.

"We'd love to have Greg back, he's been a great player for us for a long time," Rodgers said. "I've been fortunate to play seven years with him, so hopefully we can find a way to get a deal done because he's a great player."

Regarding tight end Jermichael Finley, Rodgers clearly thinks he already is a part of next season's squad.

"He's under contract," Rodgers said, "so far as I know he's going to be a Packer. I haven't heard anything (otherwise)."

Rodgers said playing in this golf tournament has special meaning.

"It's great," he said. "I'm glad they invited me back this year. It's a special place to be. It's fun to see the pros in their element."

Those pros include the likes of fan favorite Phil Mickelson and American Ryder Cup member Brandt Snedeker, as well as European stalwarts Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington.

Rodgers played in the same group as former tennis star Andy Roddick. Rodgers said he and Roddick have been friends for a couple years.

"Andy's a great guy," Rodgers said. "Actually, we met a couple years back. He spent some time in Wisconsin growing up.

"It's fun to be able to try and hit it around with him in a game that is foreign to us."

Roddick enjoyed a Packers game a few years ago as a guest of the quarterback.

"(Rodgers) gave us the whole dog and pony show," Roddick said. "We had the onfield tour beforehand, we sat with his parents in the sky box. He was really gracious about it all, really nice."

Rodgers is slyly selfdeprecating when describing his golf game.

"I'm an inconsistent player at best," Rodgers said. "This is a fun event though. It gives you some nerves you don't usually get playing my sport, so it's fun to be out here with the pros."

Rodgers feels privileged to be able to play this game with pros and people from other sports.

"I think it's great you know a lot of different people from different walks of life," Rodgers said. "This is a special place to be out here to view just the beauty of the courses.
