Gangly Gerenuk Born at Denver Zoo

The Denver Zoo welcomed an adorable baby gerenuk named Blossom this month.

The shy, skinny antelope was born on March 6 to mother Layla and father Woody, and the family can now be seen in the zoo's gerenuk exhibit.

"Blossom has just begun venturing out into her yard and thoroughly enjoys it as she runs and jumps to the delight of her first visitors," zoo officials said in a statement. "Between bursts of speed, though, she likes to catch her breath in a cubby hole between some rocks. Blossom is also Layla's first calf and she is proving to be a very attentive mother, frequently making sure to clean and check on Blossom."

The word "gerenuk" appropriately means "giraffe-necked" in the Somali language. These long-necked creatures, which are native to eastern Africa, can weigh between 60 to 100 pounds (27 to 45 kilograms) and stand about 3.5 feet (1 meter) tall on four legs. But their uniquely designed hips and pelvises also allow theseto stand up vertically on their two hind legs to reach leaves and twigs in trees.

Blossom is the first gerenuk born at the Denver Zoo. Her parents were paired through the Species Survival Plan of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The organization acts like a matchmaker, recommending which animals should mate to ensure that captive populations ofremain healthy and genetically diverse.

There are thought to be about 95,000 gerenuks in the wild and the species is listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). These antelopes are world-class hiders, which means they can endure some pressures of hunting in their native home, but they are also threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, according to the IUCN.

Follow us ,& .
GERD label makes parents more likely to

By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Telling the parents of babies who spit up and cry frequently that their child has gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, makes them more likely to want medicine - even if they're also told it isn't likely to help much, a new study suggests.

Most babies who spit up don't have an acid reflux problem, researchers said, just a not-quite-developed upper stomach valve.

Still, an increasing number of those kids are being labeled as having GERD - even though a definitive diagnosis normally requires an invasive test.

"Roughly 50 percent of babies during the first six months are spitting up enough to bother their parents," said Dr. William Carey from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, who wrote a commentary published Monday with the new study.

"I never offered medication for a kid who was just spitting up and gaining weight well and happy," he told Reuters Health. "I could confidently tell the mother, Look, it's going to be a nuisance until about six months, and then it's gradually going to get better.' It's an irritating variation of normal."

For their study, Laura Scherer from the University of Missouri in Columbia and her colleagues handed out surveys to 175 parents with a hypothetical scenario: their one-month-old infant was spitting up and crying a lot.

The researchers asked parents what they would do if the doctor diagnosed their child with GERD versus if the condition wasn't labeled, as well as what they would do if the doctor told them the medication to treat the condition was ineffective - as research suggests it is - or didn't say anything about its efficacy.

Survey participants were more likely to want medication if their hypothetical infant was given a GERD diagnosis. Even when parents were told the medicine probably wouldn't work, they rated their interest in treatment at about 2.5 out of 5.

However, with no disease label and with information about the medicine's lack of efficacy, parents rated their desire to treat below 1.5 out of 5, the researchers reported in Pediatrics.

"It shows how these kinds of labels can influence how people respond to symptoms," Scherer told Reuters Health. "Words can make an otherwise normal process seem like something that requires medical intervention."

She said current guidelines say the case of an irritable infant who cries and spits up frequently should probably not be treated as GERD - but that if doctors rule everything else out, they can try a two-week course of acid-reducing medication.

That caveat could further confuse doctors and parents into thinking medicine is likely to help, Scherer said.

"It's really becoming pretty clear that GERD in infants is overdiagnosed and overtreated. One reason for this could be that doctors' use of this GERD label could unintentionally increase people's (desire) for medications," she said.

Carey compared what's happening with GERD symptoms to the rising number of very active kids being diagnosed with and treated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

"Parents need to know that there are some annoying or insignificant variations of normal which one really needs to just put up with and not treat as a disease," he said.

"Be darn sure that there is an abnormality before treating it as such."

SOURCE: http://bit.ly/jsoh2P Pediatrics, online April 1, 2013.

http://adeleuac.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/04/25/Downloads-The-Law-School-Bible%3A-How-Anyone-Can-Become-A-Lawyer...-Without-Ever-Setting-Foot-In-A-Law-School%21
http://utqlyoeon.blogdetik.com/roving-and-fighting-adventures-under-four-flags-e-book-downloads/
http://blogs.rediff.com/venessaoodu/2013/04/25/report-of-the-committee-on-teachers-salaries-and-cost-of-living-book-downloads/
http://faustoieni.guildomatic.com/news/show/1473406
http://roanlod.altervista.org/near-east-history-of-modern-world-downloads/
http://aelqkoaob.blogdetik.com/downloads-writing-in-the-margins-among-people-with-developmental-disabilities-ebook/
http://clarettaryu.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/04/25/Downloads-Basic-Care-for-Naturally-Textured-Hair%3A-Cultivating-Curly%2C-Coily%2C-and-Kinky-Hair-%28Personal-Care-Collection%29-book
http://blogs.rediff.com/lavadadqr/2013/04/25/stalag-65-a-memoir-of-a-korean-pow-ebook/
http://raymonkii.guildomatic.com/news/show/1473409
http://eugenieur.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/04/25/A-New-Testament-Greek-Primer-3rd-Edition-book-downloads
http://uoiqoudb.blogdetik.com/download-firewing-silverwing-book/

Slowdown in Apple orders weighs on LG Di

SEOUL (Reuters) - LG Display Co Ltd reported its smallest profit since it returned to the black in the second quarter of last year, as demand for iPhone and iPad screens from Apple weakened amid concerns the U.S. company is losing its luster in the mobile device market.

Apple Inc, which analysts say provides about 30 percent of LG Display's revenue, is facing intensifying competition from Samsung and up-and-coming rivals. A disappointing forecast by a U.S. supplier to Apple last week heightened fears about slowing demand for the iPhone and iPad, pushing shares of Asian suppliers including LG Display sharply lower.

LG Display, which vies with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's panel unit for the top position in LCD flat screens globally, made 151 billion won ($135 million) in operating profit in its January-March first quarter. That compared with the average forecast of a 147 billion won profit in a Thomson Reuters poll of analysts.

It was the South Korean company's fourth straight quarterly profit after seven straight quarters of losses, as makers of liquid crystal display panels have since curtailed output after about two years of oversupply.

The result was also a sharp improvement from a loss of 211 billion won a year earlier. But it was down 74 percent from the previous quarter, hurt by a seasonal slowdown in demand and by weaker sales to Apple, which is scheduled to report quarterly results on Tuesday.

Sales of tablet and smartphone panels, which are largely bought by Apple, accounted for 27 percent of LG Display's total screen shipments in the first quarter, down from 31 percent in the fourth quarter.

Jay Yoo, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities, estimated before the results announcement that LG Display's panel shipments for the iPhone 5 and the latest iPad had fallen 42 percent and 66 percent, respectively, from the prior quarter as Apple struggles with slowing sales growth.

On Tuesday, Apple is expected to report just an 8 percent increase in revenue for its fiscal second quarter, among the weakest showings in years, according to analysts' estimates.

Still, analysts see earnings for LG Display improving in the coming quarters as Apple is expected to introduce upgraded products later this year, and as demand for mobile device screens from affiliate LG Electronics Inc increases.

Samsung Securities analyst Harrison Cho expects Apple to introduce a less costly iPhone around July, helping LG Display improve its sales to Apple from June when initial parts shipments are expected to begin.

LG Display said on Monday that it expects panel shipments will rise by 5 percent to 10 percent in the second quarter from the previous quarter.

Shares in LG Display have fallen about 3 percent in the year to date, compared with a roughly 5 percent drop in the benchmark KOSPI index. The stock closed 2.2 percent higher prior to the results announcement.

(Reporting by Miyoung Kim; Editing by Chris Gallagher)

http://ivoryioi.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/04/25/Special-Kids-Problem-Solver%3A-Ready-to-Use-Interventions-for-Helping-All-Students-with-Academic%2C-Behavioral%2C-and-Physical-Problems-book
http://adamiae.guildomatic.com/news/show/1483723
http://pearlpze.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/04/25/New-York/Mid-Atlantic-Gardener-s-Book-of-Lists-ebook-downloads
http://amipqfo.guildomatic.com/news/show/1483726
http://blogs.rediff.com/lucasam/2013/04/25/downloads-four-cornerstones-of-winning-golf-e-book/
http://bsseyueiu.blogdetik.com/downloads-national-electrical-code-2011-pocket-guide-for-residential-electrical-installations-national-electrical-code-nec-pocket-guide-volume-1-residential-book/
http://nbeeuray.altervista.org/cirque-du-freak-3-tunnels-of-blood-book-3-in-the-saga-of-darren-shan-ebook/
http://rondaua.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/04/25/Downloads-The-Other-80-Percent%3A-Turning-Your-Church-s-Spectators-into-Active-Participants-%28Jossey-Bass-Leadership-Network-Series%29-book
http://ouimcpeon.blogdetik.com/the-guide-to-writing-fantasy-and-science-fiction-6-steps-to-writing-and-publishing-your-bestseller-online/
http://vedaobdp.soclog.se/p/2013/4/?link=1366912466
http://blogs.rediff.com/catherinauylb/2013/04/25/united-states-constitution-commerce-clause-case-law-including-heart-of-atlanta-motel-v-united-states-united-states-v-e-c-knight-co-schechter-states-v-morrison-boynton-v-virginia-ebook/
http://eqnsspurf.blogdetik.com/they-came-from-lambeth-book/

The Samsung Galaxy S4: A great phone, bu

Many critics prefer the HTC One
Samsung spared no expense promoting the arrival of its newest flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, with an last month that rivaled any Broadway show in New York City. The Galaxy S4 is a follow-up to the phenomenal Galaxy S III — the best-selling Android of all time — and comes on the heels of the arrival oflike the HTC One. Suddenly, Samsung finds itself staring down an unfamiliar path of weighty and well-deserved expectations. How does the Galaxy S4 stack up to other premium smartphones? Now that critics have finally gotten their hands on the S4, a roundup of their reviews:

David Pierce at The Vergethe S4's 5-inch screen is "big, beautiful, and seriously eye-catching." However, "the latter is partially a bad thing":

The S4 uses a Super AMOLED panel like many of Samsung's phones, and like many of Samsung's phones it displays overly contrasted and vibrant colors. Those colors may not be accurate — reds and oranges absolutely explode off the screen, whether they should or not — but they certainly catch your eye. And with a ridiculous 441 pixels per inch, even the PenTile display matrix I usually loathe causes no problems. The glass is rigid and responsive to touch, and works even if you have gloves on. []
Steve Kovach at Business Insider of the S4's plastic design and shabby quality:

The Galaxy S4 simply isn't as beautiful or as fun to hold as the HTC One and iPhone 5. And it almost feels cheap by comparison. The entire phone is covered in creaky plastic, not solid metal and glass. Just take off the flimsy back cover and you'll see what I'm talking about. It almost bends in half. Whereas the iPhone and HTC One designs scream quality, the Galaxy S4 design feels at least two years behind. It looks nearly identical to last year's Galaxy S III, with only a few minor tweaks. []
But, , some people will still like the S4:

There are some benefits to owning a plastic phone over a metal one, and some will find the plastic construction a good thing, not a drawback. The Galaxy S4 won't scratch as easily as metal phones, and the plastic makes the phone feel slim and lightweight. []
Brent Rose at Gizmodo thinks the phone is needlessly :

There's Air View, which allows you to hover your finger over the screen to see some information without actually clicking. There's Air Gestures, which allows you to wave your hand over the phone to change between tabs or photos. There's Smart Scroll, with which you tilt your device to scroll, instead of using your finger. There's Smart Pause, which will pause a video when you look away from the screen. And there's Group Play, which lets you play a handful of selected video games with friends on the same Wi-Fi network, or use several S4 phones as Sonos-like speakers.

The most important thing you need to know about these features is that you will never use any of them. Ever. Never ever. […]

The good news is that you can turn off and/or totally ignore most of these extraneous "features," and when you do, there's a very good phone underneath. []
Walt Mossberg at All Things D a few of these software innovations:

A feature called Air View lets you see expanded information about things like email previews and calendar items by hovering over them with your finger. A multi-window feature splits the screen so you can view two apps at once. But both features only work with certain apps.

I also liked an improved version of Easy Mode, which substitutes the sometimes confusing normal screens and settings panels for simpler ones with larger, cleaner icons, and simplified settings.

Another good move: Samsung rewrote the standard Android email app so it's better, with a unified inbox and other nice improvements. []
The Verge's Pierce the camera:

It's actually Samsung's experience with dedicated cameras that make shooting photos with the GS4 so nice. The company borrowed a lot of the GS4's camera software from the Galaxy Camera, a concept car of sorts that clearly informed its ability to build a great cameraphone. The interface is much improved over the S III, from the scrolling mode dial to the one-press capture of either stills or video. It's also simple and fast, two things many cellphone cameras are not. []
Gizmodo'sprefers the HTC One:

The S4 is far from a bad phone. In fact, were it not for the HTC One, it would be the best Android phone you can buy. And one can't help but think that had Samsung poured all of its innovation into maximizing the practical user experience — instead of highly ignorable gimmicks— it might have taken the crown. []
So does Business Insider's :

Make no mistake about it, the Galaxy S4 is a great phone, and easily one of the best you can buy right now. You get an amazing Android experience on a big, beautiful display.

As long as you don't mind a bunch of plastic, you'll be perfectly happy with the Galaxy S4.

But is it the best phone? No. You're still much better off with the iPhone 5 or the HTC One if you like Android. []
And All Things D's makes three:

While many will compare the Galaxy S4 with the iPhone 5, I also compared it with the $200 HTC One, which came out April 19. The HTC has a handsome, sturdier, aluminum body, dual stereo speakers, an excellent camera, better screen resolution than the new Samsung, and twice the base memory for the same price.

If you're a nut for lists of new features, love Samsung or crave an even bigger display, the Galaxy S4 may be for you. It's a good phone, just not a great one.
