新・英語かけこみ寺 https://ameblo.jp/eigokakekomi/ 翻訳会社ユニコンプロダクトを経営するマイク・サカモトが、自らの40年の経験をもとに英語の上達法や英米文化について情報を提供します。質問はメールでも受け付けています。info（アットマーク）uniconpro.co.jp ja でたらめ翻訳をする 翻訳の仕事を長くしていると「間違ってもかまわない、英語になっていれば良い」という変な依頼を受けることがあります。私も始めたばかりのとき、お役所の仕事でこのような仕事を受けたことがあります。何故そうなったかと言いますと、そのときは忙しくてその仕事はとても受けられる状態ではなかったんですね。そうしたらそのエージェントの人が「英語になっていれば良いから受けて欲しい」と言い出したのです。

私は当然のことながら「そんなこと言ったって信用できませんよ」と言ったのですが、とにかく「面倒な英訳なのでやってくれる人がいない、だから頼む」。矛盾がありますよね。「そんな面倒な仕事は余計出来ない」ということになります。そうしたら「英語になっていれば良い。間違いだらけでも構わない」とこの殺し文句なんですよ。結局、受けました。適当に英訳してお茶を濁しました。

今回はこれがもっと酷かったんですよね。土日を入れて三日で約2万5千字の依頼。それでいて内容はけっこう難しい。出来るわけがありません。そうしたらエージェントの人が「英語が並んでいれば良い」と言い出したんですね。ただし、納品後、10日間で直して欲しいとのことです。

このような依頼は初めてです。取りあえず一次納品はでたらめでも納品は出来ると思って始めましたが、後で直すということですと、あまりにもでたらめだと後の直しが大変です。後で直しやすいようにでたらめに英訳しなくてはならない、これは高等テクニックが必要です。いくら長くやっていてもこのようなスキル(?)はそれほどない、それほどないと書きましたが、少しはある、考えたら恐ろしいスキルを多少とも身に付けていたわけですね。

「土日も作業すれば3日はある、半分は多少ともまともに訳し、あとの半分はでたらめでいこう」と方針(?)を固めました。半分だと1万2千字なのでヌケを気にせず、辞書も引かずにやれば、2日もかからずに終わります。問題はあとの半分、でたらめに訳すと言ってもABCEFGと入力するのだって時間はかかります。それだったら後で訂正しやすいようにでたらめ英訳をしようと決めました。ところがあると思っていたスキルがあまり有効ではない、微妙なところを後回しにするのが一番良いのですが、どれが微妙かと判断するのに時間がかかる、取りあえず主語と述語だけ英訳する方法も試したのですが、主語が関係代名詞が入ったりしていると長くて簡単に訳せない、そうするとこれは後回しにしようかと考えたりして時間がかかります。

第一次納品が終わって最終納品を目指したわけですが、前半分はある程度まともにやっています。でたらめ度が少ないので早く訂正は終わりました。ところがほとんどが出鱈目の後半分、この直しは大変でした。日本語をよく読んでいないので誤訳が多い、使えない、機械翻訳でやった変な翻訳を直すのと同様で初めから訳したほうが良いというような所が次から次へと出てきます。まぁ、機械よりは自分がやったので使えるのもありましたがね。

無事終了して納品しましたが、このようなアブノーマルな仕事は受けないほうが良いとは思います。しかしビジネスとなるとこのような変な話もあるとは思います。

英文履歴書を提出する先は外資系企業です。応募者は殺到するでしょうから競争は熾烈なものとなります。一つのポジションに対して200人から多ければ500人位の応募があることも考えられます。募集担当者にしてみれば履歴書を読むのも大変な仕事となります。カバーレターをちらっと見て、履歴書そのものもさっと見て、たいしたことがなければ次の履歴書を見るというような具合でしょうから、一人について5分もかけないと思います。

その5分の中で興味のあるものを20人とか30人分残しておいて、それについて再度読み、面接候補を決めるという方法になるのではないでしょうか。そうすると余程変わっているとか、魅力がないと、5分で終わりの部に入れられてしまいますね。ではどうしたら変わった履歴書になるか、これが勝負になります。

人が就職をするということはその人を売り込むことです。営業マンが商品やサービスを売るとき、プレゼンをして商談を進めます。そのきっかけを掴むためにホームページがあり、きれいなカタログが用意され、パワーポイントによるプレゼンの資料が準備されます。就職のときは履歴書でこれらの機能を一挙に果たすことになります。

以前にもお話ししたように英文履歴書には決まったフォーマットがありません。そこで創造力を発揮して読みたいと思うようなフォーマットにし、そして自分がいかに適切な人材かについて説得力のある内容のものにしなければなりません。
