Where do Saints turn for running game

January, 7 Custom Packers Jersey, 20111/07/1112:10PM ET By Pat Yasinskas | ESPN.com Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrint AP Photo/Patrick SemanskyWith a depleted backfield, Reggie Bush might take a lot more handoffs than usual in the playoffs. If you go by record or reputation, you can look at Saturday’s playoff game and say the New Orleans Saints should be able to win with one arm tied behind their back.

That might be exactly what the Saints have to do.

They’re heading into Seattle’s Qwest Field without running backs Chris Ivory and Pierre Thomas. Both were placed on injured reserve this week. Ivory has a foot injury that will require surgery. Thomas has an ankle injury that kept him out much of the season and finally sidelined him after a brief, but promising, late-season comeback.

On the surface Nike B.J. Raji Jersey, Ivory and Thomas aren’t superstars, but they were important cogs in an offense that’s known more for the passing game than the running game. Thomas was the closest thing to a complete running back the Saints had during last season’s Super Bowl run. With Thomas and Reggie Bush injured early in the season, Ivory, an undrafted rookie free agent, stepped up and was the team’s leading rusher during the regular season.

Quarterback Drew Brees might be good enough to put the team on his back and simply use the passing game to get by the 7-9 Seahawks, who are in the playoffs only because they were slightly less mediocre than the rest of the teams in the NFC West.

As good as Brees is, though, that’s a lot to ask. Qwest Field is known as one of the league’s loudest outdoor venues, and weather frequently can be a factor. Scratch the running game out of New Orleans’ offense, and Seattle’s defense simply will load up against the pass.

Even when Bush and Thomas were hurt early in the year, New Orleans coach Sean Payton made it a point not to abandon the running game completely. Even Brees needs help and balance, and the Saints will have to turn to some unusual suspects to provide at least some threat of a running game.

“We’ve gone through this before and really it’s not uncommon,’’ Payton said. “It’s more of the norm and making sure that through preparation that the players that maybe haven’t played more significant roles at one point or another are now ready to play those roles. More than anything else, I think it’s the preparation and the teaching and the coaching that goes on. The players work week-to-week regardless of what their status might be that week, and it’s understanding that all of these guys are on hand and ready to contribute.”

What the Saints have on hand is a unique collection of running backs, all with different strengths and weaknesses. They have Bush, who could be more important than ever, Julius Jones DeMarco Murray Jersey, DeShawn Wynn and Joique Bell. Wynn and Bell were signed this week to fill the roster spots of Thomas and Ivory. Wynn had a brief stint with the Saints this season, and Bell was signed off Philadelphia’s practice squad.

At least one of them will be active Saturday, but it probably will be only as a third running back. That leaves Bush and Jones as New Orleans’ two best options in the running game and, as the only two backs with much experience, they’ll also be needed in the passing game.

“The protections are the big issue Bradie James Jersey,’’ Payton said.

In recent weeks, opponents have been trying to beat the Saints by blitzing Brees frequently. That strategy worked well for Baltimore and Tampa Bay, and you can bet the Seahawks have studied film of those games closely.

Neither is an exceptionally big back and neither is known as a blocker. Jones, who was signed by New Orleans this year after three mostly disappointing seasons in Seattle, hasn’t done much with the Saints. Ivory vaulted over Jones on the depth chart. In a backup role, Jones has carried 48 times for 193 yards and caught 17 passes for 59 yards. He has not scored a touchdown.

The Saints might use Jones as a blocker, but it’s not likely they’ll suddenly put the entire running game in his hands. That’s why Bush could be the wild card in this game.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2006 draft Nike Aaron Rodgers Jersey, Bush never has been the type of running back to handle 20 or 25 carries a game. Instead, he’s been used in tandem, first with Deuce McAllister, then with Thomas and most recently with Ivory. Bush has been part running back, part wide receiver and part return man throughout his career.

But this could be the one game where the Saints use Bush almost exclusively as a running back because they really don’t have many other choices.

“We just have to package him the right way and look at the snaps and what we’re trying to do when we put him in that position,’’ Payton said.

Bush missed eight games earlier this season with a broken leg, and the Saints have gradually worked him back into the rotation. But it might be time to take the limitations off Bush, and there were some encouraging signs in the regular-season finale against Tampa Bay. Bush had season highs with 70 rushing yards on nine carries.

“I thought he played well last week,’’ Payton said. “He’s healthy and is doing well. Coming back off of the injury, he’s fully recovered now and I thought the carries and the touches he had last week were encouraging.”

Although Bush finished the regular season with just 36 carries for 150 yards, there is a precedent for his stepping up in the postseason. That’s what happened last season as the Saints won the Super Bowl. The Saints were cautious with Bush, who was dealing with a knee injury most of the regular season.

But he was healthy for the postseason, and the Saints unleashed him. Bush averaged 6.9 yards per carry in the postseason and was at his best in a divisional round victory against Arizona in which he ran for 84 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown run. Bush also returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown.

Still, the Saints were pairing Bush with a healthy Thomas throughout the postseason, and Bush never got more than seven carries in a game.

The Saints aren’t going to suddenly hand the ball to Bush 25 times on Saturday, but it’s pretty safe to assume he’ll get more than seven carries. Jones probably will get more carries than usual, and Wynn and/or Bell could end up handling a few carries.

The Saints have used Bush basically as a hybrid throughout his career. On Saturday, they might have to ask him to be just a running back.Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrintPat Yasinskas | emailNFLArchive ESPN NFC South Blogger Joined ESPN in 2008 Began his journalism career with The Tampa Tribune in 1990Related articles:

2010 All-NFC West Specialists

Tom Cable gives Seahawks' OL an identity

Andrew Luck tops Kiper's 2012 board

Drew Brees wins Bart Starr Award

Adding Zach Miller rare luxury for Seattle

Flash Points Bears' defining moment

AFC East observations on the Super Bowl

There had been some talk over the past two weeks that if Roethlisberger won the Super Bowl he would stand next to Brady and Peyton Manning in the pantheon of uber-elite NFL quarterbacks.

Roethlisberger has been sensational in the postseason, but not this postseason. Aside from a couple clutch throws, he was below average in beating the New York Jets in the AFC Championship Game. He had another pedestrian outing Sunday.

He threw two interceptions, one that Nick Collins returned for a touchdown. Roethlisberger overthrew Mike Wallace twice in key situations in the third quarter: a would-be touchdown after Wallace got behind the Packers secondary and a third-and-2 play right before the fourth quarter. Roethlisberger also failed to take advantage of a defensive backfield missing its best player, Charles Woodson Keith Brooking Jersey, the entire second half.

Roethlisberger is 10-3 in the postseason and has been to three Super Bowls in his seven NFL seasons. Brady won his first three Super Bowls and his first 10 postseason games before a defeat. Plus, Brady has appeared in a fourth Super Bowl.

I understand Brady has lost three straight postseason games Nike Jason Witten Jersey, but he still has more championship rings and conference titles.

The New England Patriots were the Packers' springboard. The Packers have won every game since losing 31-27 at Gillette Stadium in Week 15. Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers was hurt and couldn't play Greg Jennings Jersey, but the Packers still gave the scalding-hot Patriots a scare with backup quarterback Matt Flynn.

"The New England game was a big game for us," Rodgers said on ESPN's Super Bowl set Sunday night. "We lost that game, a game we were double-digit underdogs. I was out. Matt played great, and our defense played pretty well also.

"That was the game where, I think, [we said] 'We got a good team. Let's not lose this opportunity.'"

Howard Green quietly made one of the game's biggest plays. The former Jets defensive lineman didn't register a tackle. But he bull rushed Steelers guard Chris Kemoeatu and, in a great individual effort, harassed Roethlisberger into a bad throw that turned into Collins' pick six. Green started only six games in the regular season and playoffs.

It wasn't quite Thurman Thomas losing his helmet at the start of Super Bowl XXVI, but Steelers left tackle Jonathan Scott -- not good enough to remain with the Buffalo Bills despite starting eight games in 2009 -- had to come off the field with the game on the line because his shoe came off.

Scott missed the Steelers' third-and-5 play with 62 seconds remaining and their fateful fourth-and-5 with 56 seconds left. Trai Essex replaced him as Roethlisberger's blindside protector and did OK while on his heels, but the switch was one more thing for Roethlisberger to worry about.

Roethlisberger threw incompletions on both plays.

A Lombardi Trophy would've completed a tremendous turnaround tale for Steelers offensive line coach Sean Kugler. He was dismissed from Buffalo's staff at the end of last season. The native of nearby Lockport, N.Y., was living a dream by coaching his hometown team. He was on Dick Jauron's staff and served under interim coach Perry Fewell through an ugly campaign. But new Bills general manager Buddy Nix cleared out the coaches' offices when he took over, and Kugler was snatched up by the Steelers.Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrintRelated articles:

DE Cameron Jordan to visit Steelers

A wild start to camp for the Bears

Flash Points Bears' defining moment

Patriots belong in explosive O discussion

Panthers put tag on center Kalil

Keeping score Power rankings by division

What's next for Steelers, Plaxico

July nike dallas cowboys jersey, 30, 20117/30/1112:08PM ET By James Walker | ESPN.com Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrint The Pittsburgh Steelers met early Saturday morning with free-agent receiver Plaxico Burress. According to Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert, the meeting went well and there's interest from both sides.

Burress

That part is no surprise. But the next step is the most important and probably will determine whether Burress plays in Pittsburgh in 2011 or somewhere else.

The Steelers have to determine a price tag for Burress. That will be challenging given the rapidly changing market and Burress' absence from football since 2008.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus will be seeking the best deal possible for Burress Nike Felix Jones Jersey, who was a very good receiver when he last suited up. "Other teams are doing the same thing we're doing. So sometimes the demand will drive that market and we have to decide if we want to be in it or not."

In addition to Pittsburgh, Burress' other former team -- the New York Giants -- already met with the wide receiver and are showing significant interest. More teams could join as the process moves along, which would be good for Burress but not the Steelers.

Colbert will meet with Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin later today to gauge his feelings on Burress and where he might fit. But Colbert and Pittsburgh's players appear willing to move forward. So I don't see any reason Tomlin wouldn't feel the same.

Pittsburgh is already making tough decisions to fit under the salary cap. Veteran leaders such as receiver Antwaan Randle El and offensive tackles Max Starks and Flozell Adams are among the early cap casualties.

Depending on the price tag Nike Jesse Holley Jersey, fitting in "Plax" could lead to more salary cuts.

"If we do get in it, what’s it going to cost us on the other end and can we handle it?"
Kyle Orton, Vincent Jackson updates

July, 26, 20117/26/1110:41AM ET By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrint As we get going in free agency Nike Keith Brooking Jersey, I wanted to pass along a couple of interesting reports.

First, the Denver Post reports the Broncos will shop quarterback Kyle Orton. That has long been expected. If Denver gets a decent offer (perhaps a third-round pick or a conditional second) Orton could be shipped out of Denver shortly and the Tim Tebow era would officially start in Denver. Miami Custom Packers Jersey, Arizona, Minnesota and Tennessee are among the teams that could be in play for Orton.

The Denver Post also reports soon-to-be-released Baltimore running back Willis McGahee could be targeted by Denver.
Update NFL says no fine money used

April, 5, 20114/05/114:51PM ET By Mike Sando | ESPN.com Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrint For years, fans have asked what the NFL does with the money it collects from fining players.

The money helps to fund league charities Felix Jones Jersey, I would tell them. And so it made sense to me that the money the NFL recently donated to player-related charities would include fine money.

That is not the case, an NFL spokesman said upon reading my earlier item. The spokesman passed along this paragraph:
"Player foundation grants come from the funds set aside annually by owners to fund NFL Charities and its grant initiatives (e.g. Medical Research grants DeMarco Murray Jersey, Player Foundation grants Nike Tyron Smith Jersey, Team Program grants, Impact Grants supporting youth health and fitness programs, etc.). No Player fine money is used to fund Player Foundation grants or any of these grant programs."
The NFL Charities website includes the following information regarding fine money:
"NFL Charities has traditionally donated funds to charitable causes from annual revenues generated by on-field disciplinary fines levied against players and coaches. This on-field fine money has netted more than $2 million per year for distribution to a variety of worthwhile charitable organizations over the last four years.

"Organizations that have received this funding support through NFL Charities include the Partnership for Clean Competition, the Brian Piccolo Memorial Fund Anthony Spencer Jersey, the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Care Center and the NFL Player Care Foundation.

"Additionally Stephen McGee Jersey, one-quarter of the total fine money received by NFL Charities each year is donated to support former players in need through the NFL Player Association’s Player Assistance Trust (PAT)."
I'm not sure I fully understand the distinctions here, but if the NFL says the money donated to these player charities does not include money collected through fines, the previous item begs for clarification -- and that is putting it charitably.Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrintMike Sando | emailNFLArchive NFC West Blogger Joined ESPN in 2007 Lives in the Seattle-Tacoma area with his wife and two sonsRelated articles:

Bills, Dolphins make safe picks, avoid QBs

A wild start to camp for the Bears

Eagles have decisions to make

Waiting for the onslaught

Players give Jackson edge over Gore

Brian Urlacher joins HOF game skeptics

Show and prove Ryan Fitzpatrick

June Anthony Spencer Jersey, 3, 2012Jun 38:00AM ET By James Walker | ESPN.com Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrint Everyday this week, the AFC East blog will highlight a player who has a lot to prove in 2012. We start Sunday by taking a look at Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick:

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bills

2011 stats: 3,832 yards Nike DeMarcus Ware Jersey, 24 TDs, 23 INTs, 79.1 passer rating

What he must prove: Fitzpatrick must prove that he is a franchise quarterback. The Bills certainly are paying him like one. Fitzpatrick received a $59 million contract extension during the 2011 season. But he struggled down the stretch Kyle Orton Jersey, got injured and lost eight of his last nine starts. He has a reputation of being streaky Stephen McGee Jersey, and things went downhill fast for "Fitz." The big contract brings big expectations. Fitzpatrick can no longer lean on being the cute story from Harvard, who made it in the NFL as a seventh-round pick. The time is now to produce.

Walker's 2o12 outlook: I covered a lot of Bills games last season and saw the best of Fitzpatrick and the worst of Fitzpatrick. At his best, he can beat anyone. Fitzpatrick and the Bills were the only AFC East team to beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots last season. At his worst, one interception can snowball into three or four, and you want to pull him from the game. But I think better health will certainly help Fitzpatrick. I don't know if he will ever lose the streakiness. But as long as Fitzpatrick has more good games than bad next season, the Bills should be in position to compete for second place in the AFC East.Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrintJames Walker | emailNFLArchive ESPN AFC East Blogger Joined ESPN in 2008 A Temple graduate and Hyattsville Tyron Smith Jersey, Md. native who lives in MiamiRelated articles:

Observation deck Falcons-Jaguars

Fickle back, not DUI, biggest threat to Lynch

Schefter Jaguars trying to get Tebow

Camp Confidential St. Louis Rams

Reports Sanchez bests Tebow in practice

Bengals One big question

Gailey discusses Spiller-Jackson duo

Backup C.J. Spiller also is a former first-round pick who could start at running back for plenty of teams.

Who should get most of the carries in Buffalo?
66% Fred Jackson 23% 50-50 split 11% C.J. Spiller
(Total votes: 6,892)
Two good rushers and only one football equals a big choice for Bills head coach Chan Gailey.

"That's a great problem to have by the way -- to have two great players," Gailey said Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings. "I don’t know how you do that. I know one thing: They're both not going to be totally happy with the touches that they get."

Buffalo didn't handle this situation too well last season. Jackson was on a tear and received about 80-90 percent of the carries. Spiller, meanwhile Jason Witten Jersey, was relegated to receiver duties and just a few carries per game.

But once Jackson broke his leg midseason Felix Jones Jersey, Spiller showed what he could do. He received a bulk of the carries and rushed for 446 yards in the last six games. Now, how does Buffalo carve out roles for two players who proved they can lead the charge?

"There is only one football, and you got several guys who can make plays Nike Charles Woodson Jersey," Gailey said. "Everybody is not going to be happy. That's part of it. So, you do the best you can to try to use C.J. and Fred in different ways to get them the ball, because they're capable of making big plays when they have the ball in their hands."

Some have mentioned Buffalo working out a 50-50 split next season. Gailey said he's not worried about that.

"If I want to sit there and chart how many carries each guy gets green bay packers jersey nike, then take him out when he gets his number and put the other guy in, yeah you can do that if that’s what’s most important," Gailey said. "But I don’t think that's the most important thing. The most important thing is to win and try to get two good players the ball."Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrintJames Walker | emailNFLArchive ESPN AFC East Blogger Joined ESPN in 2008 A Temple graduate and Hyattsville, Md. native who lives in MiamiRelated articles:

Call it Blame on Drew Brees or Saints

Unsurprisingly, CJ backs MJD

Giants get their new tight end in fourth

Art Modell dies; former Ravens owner

Cards survive error, but Rams not so lucky

Rapid Reaction Giants 41, Buccaneers 34

Tracy Porter There were no bounties

March, 23, 2012Mar 233:03PM ET By Pat Yasinskas | ESPN.com Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrint Former New Orleans cornerback Tracy Porter met with the Denver media Friday Nike Brandon Carr Jersey, shortly after officially signing his contract with the Broncos.

PorterAs you might expect, Porter was asked about the bounty program the Saints were severely punished for running the past three seasons. Porter denied there were bounties Terence Newman Jersey, then quickly tried to move away from the topic and onto his new start in Denver.

“It’s something that the league felt they had evidence on,’’ Porter said. “The thing that I will say about it is that the whole label of bounties is absurd. There was definitely no bounty on any player out there in the game. We were just playing football. For that term to come up Nike B.J. But, the league investigated, and they felt that they made the right decision, and who am I to come and say that they didn’t make the right decision in issuing out the consequences for what they investigated. That’s something that’s been put in the past, and now I’m looking to begin my career here with the Denver Broncos and help this club get back to New Orleans (site of this season’s Super Bowl) so we can win a championship.”

And for those still looking for the alleged “snitch’’, scratch Porter from your list of possible suspects. He said the NFL never interviewed him about the bounty system.

“The league held their own investigation Stephen McGee Jersey,’’ Porter said. “I don’t know if they brought it to any players or not, but I was not one of them. The only thing that I can do is focus on free agency and moving on to get in the best situation for myself. I did that by coming to Denver.”Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrintPat Yasinskas | emailNFLArchive ESPN NFC South Blogger Joined ESPN in 2008 Began his journalism career with The Tampa Tribune in 1990Related articles:

Greg Schiano is just way out of line

Browns still working to replace Phil Taylor

Reviewing my rationale for mock moves

Report Discipline for Saints coming soon

Giants get their new tight end in fourth

Art Modell dies; former Ravens owner

Is Donald Driver a possibility for Miami

April, 30, 2012Apr 3012:00PM ET By James Walker | ESPN.com Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrint Earlier this morning, NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert caught my eye with a blog post detailing the contract situation with Green Bay Packers receiver Donald Driver. The Packers are unsure about Driver's future in Green Bay and most likely will restructure his contract or release the receiver.

If it's the latter Nike Donald Driver Jersey, could Driver land in Miami? There are natural ties to suggest the Dolphins would be interested.

For starters Tony Romo Jersey, Miami rookie head coach Joe Philbin was Driver's offensive coordinator for five seasons in Green Bay. Second, Driver is a prototype West Coast receiver Stephen McGee Jersey, which is something Miami doesn't have on its roster. In fact Nike Felix Jones Jersey, the Dolphins don't have any proven receiver on their roster. I detailed those issues over the weekend.

The downside is Driver is 37 and doesn't have much time left. But he would be a good fit in Miami for the short term. Driver is an experienced veteran who knows the offense and can be a good mentor to the younger receivers. If Driver needs a job in several weeks, there's a starting position waiting for him in Miami.Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrintJames Walker | emailNFLArchive ESPN AFC East Blogger Joined ESPN in 2008 A Temple graduate and Hyattsville Greg Jennings Jersey, Md. native who lives in MiamiRelated articles:

A little health could help Cardinals' QBs

Rapid Reaction Texans 27, Jaguars 7

Blogger Blitz Richardson's physical style

Poll results Was Hines Ward a dirty player

Harbaugh was wrong to call out Belichick

A commitment to the future in Oakland
