Facebook unveiled its social search tool in January, but only made it available to a small fraction of its 1.1 billion users, as its engineers continued to tweak and test it. Over the next few weeks, starting on Monday, the company is rolling out the social search tool, called "Graph Search," to everyone whose language is set to U.S. English.

Unlike searches on Google, which are good for finding specific things like roasted kale recipes or Mizuno running shoes, Facebook's tool is most useful in unearthing information about your social circles. Graph Search lets you find friends who live in San Francisco who are vegan. Friends of friends who live near you and like hiking. Photos of your boyfriend taken before you met him in 2010. Nearby restaurants that your friends like and so on.

But soon after Facebook launched the tool, the Internet had a field day with less innocuous and more embarrassing queries, showing just how much information people reveal about themselves on the site, intentionally or not. Care to find out which brand of condoms your friends prefer? Graph Search might tell you.

A blog called actualfacebookgraphsearches.tumblr.com posted a collection of searches ranging from "married people who like prostitutes" to "current employers of people who like racism." Both yielded more than 100 people.

While it is possible that some of those Facebook users are fully aware that what they've shared is easily searchable, it is likely that some are not. It's easy to click "like" on a page and forget about it, and it's even easier to assume that no one will search through your photos from party days at the Burning Man festival five years ago.

To avoid any unpleasantness, Facebook plans to notify users that it's "getting easier for people to find photos and other things you've shared with them" along with a reminder that they can check "who can see my stuff" under their privacy settings.

"The goal is to avoid bad surprises," said Nicky Jackson Colaco, privacy and safety manager at Facebook. But she stressed Facebook's view that the search tool "indexes information differently than we have ever been able to do before, in a really positive way."

It's easier, for example, to find a long-lost classmate with a common name, or to find common interests with friends of friends.

Facebook does not currently show users ads based on what they are searching for, but the company may do in the future. As Google has shown, it's a lucrative business. Research firm eMarketer estimates that Google will take nearly 42 percent of all U.S. digital ad spending this year, well above Facebook's share of less than 7 percent.

With its new search tool, Facebook is clearly trying to divert traffic and ad spending from its rival. Whether this will work will become more clear as more people begin using it.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - An Alaska glacier is exposing remains from a military air tragedy six decades later.

Relics from an Air Force cargo plane that slammed into a mountain in November 1952, killing all 52 servicemen on board, first emerged last summer on Colony Glacier, about 50 miles east of Anchorage.

That discovery, by Alaska National Guard crews flying training missions out of Anchorage, put into motion a sophisticated recovery program carried out by the Hawaii-based Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command.

After last year's initial work - when nearly everything that rose to the glacier's surface was picked up - the JPAC team came back this summer to collect additional relics pushed out of the ice since then.

"As the glacier melts and the glacier moves, more material comes up to the surface," Dr. Gregory Berg, the forensic anthropologist who leads the team of specialists examining the crevasse-ridden ice field, told reporters at a news briefing last week.

Among the personal items collected so far: A tiny fishing kit, a compass, a survival kit, a survival suit, a hockey puck, and a mini-box of Camel cigarettes. Those and other items are being saved for a future memorial, said Doug Beckstead, a historian at Anchorage's Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Also collected were some human remains, which Berg declined to describe in detail. But he said the material, encapsulated for decades in ice, is well-preserved and includes "things we believe to be tissue" - a contrast with conditions in Southeast Asia or other hot climates where the team travels to retrieve military remains long ago decomposed.

The remains will be sent to a laboratory in Hawaii for analysis, including possible DNA matches with surviving relatives, officials said.

No positive identifications have yet been announced. It usually takes several months to complete laboratory work, said Lee Tucker, a JPAC spokesman who traveled to Alaska. Identifications are expected to be announced "in the near future," Berg said.

Berg and his team must tread carefully, skirting deadly crevasses and deep water-filled holes while trying to collect as many items and remains as possible.

They want the grinding glacier, as it moves over time, to reveal more relics over what is expected to be a years-long project, but they do not want it to carry the items all the way into the terminus lake, where they would likely be lost forever.

So far, only the lightest pieces have been pushed to the glacier's surface, and only a small portion of the 154-foot aircraft has emerged. "We don't have all 52 guys lined up neatly, ready to be located," Berg said.

The wrecked cargo plane, a C-124 Globemaster II, slammed into Mount Gannett in midwinter, an accident blamed on bad weather. Although officials knew the site of the crash, remoteness and winter weather made recovery impossible at the time. The wreckage was soon buried under snow and gone from sight.

When finally spotted last year, the debris was 12 miles from the crash site, having been shifted by the glacier. The ice has flowed another 275 meters (902 feet) downslope since last year, Berg said.

For Alaska-based military members supporting the JPAC effort, there is another mission: removing the crash debris that is not useful to the investigation.

As of early July, local military personnel had removed about 1,800 pounds of aircraft debris, said Lieutenant Colonel Adrian Crowley of the Alaskan Command. "That is the plan, to remove as much of the debris as possible from the site, to be good environmental stewards," he said.

The Yankees captain singled on his first pitch of the season, then was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning with a tight right quadriceps in an 8-4 victory Thursday over the Kansas City Royals.

"I hope it's not a big deal," Jeter said.

Jeter scored a run and went 1 for 4 with an RBI groundout as the designated hitter in his return from a nine-month layoff from a broken ankle. He said his quad tightened up during his third at-bat, and added he didn't think this injury came from pushing too hard in his debut

"It's just stiff," he said. "We'll find out tomorrow."

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said the 39-year-old Jeter will be sent for a scan.

"Jete thinks he'll be ready to play" on Friday night at home against Minnesota, Girardi said.

Andy Pettitte (7-6) settled down after another shaky first inning to win consecutive starts for the first time since April. Lyle Overbay hit a go-ahead, two-run single in a four-run fifth against Ervin Santana (5-6) as New York overcame a 3-0 deficit and split the four-game series.

Jeter batted second in his first big league game since he broke his left ankle during the AL championship series opener Oct. 13. He said after the initial injury he would return by opening day, then fractured the ankle again in April during his rehabilitation and missed the first 91 games of the season.

New York cut short the star shortstop's rehabilitation assignment in the minor leagues after just four games following injuries Wednesday night to Brett Gardner and Travis Hafner. Gardner pinch-hit for Jeter in the eighth.

Jeter turned on a 95 mph fastball in the first and sent a three-hopper up the third-base line that fell from Miguel Tejada's throwing hand. Jeter didn't acknowledge the crowd of 40,381, which chanted "De-rek Je-ter! De-rek Je-ter!" as he ran up the line well past first base, then returned to the bag.

Jeter's ankle got more tests when he raced to third on Robinson Cano's single up the middle and came home without a throw on Vernon Wells' sacrifice fly to right.

The Yankees' all-time hits leader grounded out in the second and again in the fifth, when second baseman Johnny Giavotella made a diving stop to prevent an RBI single. Jeter hit a sharp grounder to shortstop with the infield in during the sixth. Alcides Escobar bobbled the ball as Luis Cruz scored from third, and Jeter was thrown out as he jogged up the first-base line.

Jeter had not been introduced at Yankee Stadium by Bob Sheppard's recording in 271 days, since he sprawled onto his stomach while trying to field Jhonny Peralta's 12th-inning grounder up the middle, immobile on the infield dirt and yelled out in pain. He hobbled off the field on his good ankle, one arm draped around manager Joe Girardi and the other around trainer Steve Donahue.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made the decision to bring back Jeter when he was driving home after New York's 8-1 win Wednesday's and spoke with Jeter by phone. Jeter went 1 for 9 in his tuneup at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, including 0 for 3 with a throwing error during seven innings Wednesday night.

"I think it's easy to say that you would expect with his age and a double break that I think he'd lose a step or two or half a step, but I think he's moving extremely well from what I'm told," Cashman said.

Girardi said Jeter is likely to start at shortstop for Friday's series opener against Minnesota.

"I think Derek would run himself out there the next 70 games if it was up to him," Girardi said. "I mean, that's just who he is. He expects to play every day. So from that standpoint I think we have to guard against rushing him back too much, and we have to pick days off, and we have to pick DH days. In the perfect world, you have a month of spring training, but this has not been a perfect world around here this year."

Jeter did not speak with reporters before the game.

A 13-time All-Star with a .313 career average, Jeter hopes to jolt a batting order that is next to last in runs in the AL. The Yankees started Thursday fourth in the AL East at 49-42.

Six players have appeared at shortstop in his absence, hitting a combined .211 with two homers and 25 RBIs, according to STATS. Only Seattle shortstops had a lower batting average.

New York hopes to get third baseman Alex Rodriguez back this month following January hip surgery and center fielder Curtis Granderson next month after his broken pinkie has healed. First baseman Mark Teixeira is out for the season following wrist surgery.

Rodriguez began Thursday 2 for 15 (.133) with one RBI in six minor league games for Tampa and Charleston, both Class A farm teams.

Cashman said Rodriguez will be given the full 20 days of the rehab assignment, which runs through July 21.

"There's a reason he's in A-ball, and there's a reason we were able to put Derek in Triple-A right from the start, because Derek was obviously much farther along," Cashman said.

Kansas City took a 3-0 lead in the first, when Salvador Perez hit a two-run double and Lorenzo Cain had a sacrifice fly. Pettitte has allowed nine runs in the opening inning of his last six starts, with batters going 14 for 31 (.452). The Royals' only other run was unearned, set up by Pettitte's throwing error in the second.

Pettitte gave up eight hits in 5 2-3 innings, and three pitchers combined for two-hit relief.

Santana allowed eight runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings, the most runs off him since July last year against Cleveland. New York closed to 4-3 in the second when Austin Romine hit an RBI double and scored on Eduardo Nunez's single.

After Overbay's two-out, go-ahead hit, Zoilo Almonte and Nunez followed with run-scoring singles for a 7-4 lead.

The comedian and "When Harry Met Sally" actor has made a television commercial telling tourists to visit Long Beach, just east of New York City.

Long Beach was among many Northeast communities devastated by the late October storm. Its 2-mile-long boardwalk was destroyed, and hundreds of homes were damaged.

Crystal appears in a TV ad trumpeting "Long Beach is Open for Business."

City officials say Crystal appeared in the ad for free and last month made a $1 million donation for rebuilding efforts.

The commercial is part of a $700,000 advertising campaign. The TV ads will run in the New York City region.

Crystal is a 1965 graduate of Long Beach High School.

"It's a little bit surreal, to be honest with you," said the British actor, who plays a New York-based Sherlock in CBS' modern-day take on the great detective.

It was the U.S. setting that convinced him to do the show, which debuted last fall on the heels of both Robert Downey Jr.'s big-screen Holmes and the BBC's acclaimed series "Sherlock," starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

There were grumbles in the media about a Sherlock glut, and Miller says he felt some trepidation about taking on the iconic role.

"I turned it down because of that, initially," said Miller, who has played a San Francisco lawyer in the ABC TV series "Eli Stone" and a Scottish heroin addict in 1990s movie classic "Trainspotting."

"I wouldn't have done it here" in London, he said.

A season in, "Elementary" is a hit for CBS, and here Miller is, filming the start of season two this week at London locations including Paddington Station and Trafalgar Square.

Visiting London was natural for the show, which broke the usual Holmesian mold by casting Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan rather than John Watson. "Elementary'''s Sherlock is a tattooed recovering drug addict working as a consulting detective to the New York Police Department. Watson is the "sober companion" hired by Sherlock's wealthy father to stop him going off the rails.

The show also features other characters from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original detective stories, often with a twist, including possible love interest Irene Adler and the detective's nemesis, the mysterious Moriarty.

Miller says he's a "huge fan" of Cumberbatch's "Sherlock." The two men are friends, and have played the same character before. They were co-stars in director Danny Boyle's 2011 London stage production of "Frankenstein," alternating the roles of scientist Victor Frankenstein and his monster.

Once "Elementary" debuted last fall to mostly positive reviews and strong viewing figures, many of the doubters stopped comparing "Elementary" to other incarnations of the Holmes stories and Miller did, too.

"I just have confidence in our differences in our show, and I have confidence in what I am doing now," he said. "It was a risk, but ... it was a confidence in the material, and in the basic idea. And the fact we were going over to America to do it.

"And at the end of the day, the world's big enough for various interpretations of a bit of fiction."

The show's second season will introduce other characters from the Holmes canon, including Scotland Yard Inspector Lestrade (Sean Pertwee), and Sherlock's brilliant older brother Mycroft, played by "The Amazing Spider-Man" actor Rhys Ifans.

Filming in Trafalgar Square this week provided the show's makers with an archetypal London scene pigeons, tourists, Nelson's Column, red double-decker buses. The only thing amiss was the weather. It was warm. The sun shone. So much for those classic images of 221B Baker St. in the rain.

"When we started writing the script I just assumed that it would be the London I've seen in so many movies and shows before," ''Elementary" creator and executive producer Robert Doherty said.

"But this is great. This is perfect. For our purposes and given the time of year that we're going to premiere, I'd rather have a big, beautiful, lush and sunny London for the American audience."

Season 2 of "Elementary" starts Sept. 26 on CBS.

CEO Steve Ballmer is restructuring the company to cope with a quickening pace of technological change that has left the world's largest software maker a step behind its two biggest rivals, Apple and Google.

In an effort to catch up, Microsoft is dismantling a management structure that separated the company into sometimes disjointed divisions and hatching a more cohesive product line-up. The new set up revolves around software, devices and services connecting those devices to applications stored in remote data centers a concept that has become known as "cloud computing."

The move comes amid a lukewarm response to the latest version of Microsoft's flagship Windows operating system and a steady decline in demand for personal computers as people increasingly rely on more convenient smartphones and tablets.

If things pan out the way Ballmer envisions, the shake-up announced Thursday will foster more rapid innovation and sharpen the company's focus on countering the threat posed by mobile devices running on software made by Apple and Google while laptop and desktop computers powered by Windows lose their luster. He is hoping a more closely-knit organization making the software and services that run smartphones, tablets, the Xbox video game console and, yes, PCs will re-establish Microsoft's reputation as "a company that helps people get stuff done."

"We are ready to take Microsoft in bold new directions," Ballmer told analysts and reporters during a conference call.

Ballmer, 57, can't afford to lose his way now. If he does, Microsoft could be even further eclipsed by its rivals. That, in turn, could disillusion investors already exasperated with the lackluster performance of Microsoft's stock since Ballmer succeeded his close friend, company co-founder Bill Gates, as CEO 13 years ago.

During Ballmer's reign, Microsoft's stock has slipped by nearly 40 percent even as the company's annual revenue has roughly quadrupled from $20 billion to nearly $80 billion. The bellwether Standard & Poor's 500 has climbed by 14 percent during the same time while Apple's stock price is nearly 17 times higher. By the time Google went public, Ballmer had already been Microsoft's CEO for four years. Since then, Google's stock has risen tenfold. Both Apple and Google now boast higher total market values than Microsoft.

Microsoft's stock gained 99 cents Thursday to close at $35.69. The shares have surged 24 percent in the past three months, partly because the company's revenue is holding up better than many analysts expected, despite five consecutive quarters of declining PC sales. Some recent buyers of Microsoft's stock had been betting the company would do something even more dramatic, such as spinning off a division or shedding its unprofitable Internet search engine, Bing, said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis. Neither of those appears likely, now that Ballmer has reshuffled the business.

Gillis views the changes as Ballmer's tacit acknowledgement that Microsoft had become bogged down in bureaucracy and second-guessing and an admission that there was too much internal strife as various factions formed to protect their turf.

"We have to make the right decisions more quickly," Ballmer said. The company's motto now: "One Microsoft all the time."

Ballmer appears to have the right idea, although it would have looked even smarter had he done it shortly after it became clear that Apple's 2010 release of the iPad was reshaping the tech market, said Gartner Inc. analyst David Cearley.

"They are really reorganizing for the market reality that has been in place for the last three years," Cearley said. "It would have been nice if it was done earlier, but it's not too little too late yet. The real key is execution. All these changes make sense and I can see a path forward, but that path forward is a really rocky one."

Most of Microsoft's key executives will remain in positions of power at the Redmond, Wash., company although with new roles and more defined responsibilities. The company's new divisions include engineering, marketing and business development.

Ballmer said no layoffs are planned, although analysts believe the overhaul will open the door for cost-cutting opportunities as Microsoft pulls together its disparate parts.

Terry Myerson, who had been overseeing Windows Phone, will lead Microsoft's operating systems and engineering group, namely Windows. Qi Lu, who had been overseeing Bing, will head applications and services.

Microsoft named veteran executive Julie Larson-Green head of its devices and studios engineering group, which will be in charge of hardware development, games, music and entertainment. She had been promoted in November to lead all Windows software and hardware engineering after Steven Sinofsky, the president of its Windows and Windows Live operations, left the company shortly after the launch of Windows 8.

Tony Bates, who joined Microsoft in 2011 when the company bought video calling service Skype for $8.5 billion, will take on a key networking role as he works with the company's key business partners and preaches about the virtues of Microsoft's products and services.

Some of what Microsoft is doing mirrors changes that Apple and Google already have executed.

For instance, Apple put its iOS software for iPhones and iPads along with its operating system for its Mac computer under one executive, Craig Federighi, in a shake-up last year. And Google's Android software for mobile devices and Chrome software for laptops were aligned under the management of the same executive, Sundar Pichai, for the first time during the spring.

Now, Microsoft hopes to mimic the success of its rivals in a world that increasingly revolves around mobile devices and Internet services. Gartner estimates nearly 867 million devices running on Android software will be shipped worldwide this year, up from 505 million last year. Worldwide shipments of Windows-powered devices are expected to total nearly 340 million this year, down from 346 million last year, Gartner forecasts. But those Windows machines are primarily PCs, not smartphones or tablets. Apple will ship about 296 million iOS and Mac devices this year, up from 213 million last year, Gartner predicted.

Part of Microsoft's problem is a matter of perception. Even though it remains one of the world's most profitable companies, its stature has been steadily diminishing in tech and investment circles.

Ballmer's reorganization "should help Microsoft slow its decline, but the question remains whether it will be enough to help it climb into new markets," Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett said.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Polish farmers marched through Warsaw's streets Wednesday to back government plans to repeal a ban on the religious slaughter of animals.

Lawmakers will vote Friday on a government draft law that would reinstate religious slaughter provided it is done only in slaughterhouses and excludes certain forms of immobilizing the animal. The vote's outcome could go either way, since the issue is divisive and some among the ruling party's lawmakers oppose the practice.

Until January, Poland was making about 500 million euros ($650 million) per year exporting kosher and halal meat to Israel and Muslim countries like Egypt and Iran. But the business practically ground to a halt in January, after ritual slaughter was banned under pressure from animals' rights groups, which say it causes unnecessary suffering because the livestock aren't stunned before being killed.

Islamic and Jewish slaughter involves a swift cut to the throat of a conscious animal and death by bleeding. Polish law requires that an animal be stunned first.

About 150 farmers with a life-size figure of a cow marched to parliament and the Agriculture Ministry to back the government plan, but around 100 artists and intellectuals issued a letter opposing it.

"We appeal for a vote against the slaughter of animals in Poland without stunning," well known academics and actors said in the letter. "Exposing conscious beings to pre-terminal suffering, while we kill them for our own needs, is a terrifying evil and the majority of Poles age against it."

But at stake are about 6,000 jobs offered by the industry, at a time when around 13 percent of adult Poles are without a job, and major contracts.

About 200,000 tons of kosher or halal beef and poultry were exported annually before the ban, or up to 30 percent of Poland's beef exports and about 10 percent of poultry exports, according to Witold Choinski, the head of an organization of meat producers.

In a sign of the industry's success, exports were growing between 20 and 30 percent per year recently as the largely agricultural Poland has capitalized on its low labor costs and a reputation for healthy farm animals.

Danny Werfel told reporters Monday that after becoming acting IRS chief last month, he discovered inappropriate and wide-ranging criteria in lists screeners use to single out groups for careful examinations. He did not specify what terms were on the lists.

Werfel's comments suggest the IRS may have been targeting groups other than tea party and other conservative organizations for tough examinations to see if they qualify. The agency has been under fire since last month for targeting those groups.

Werfel said he has suspended use of those lists. Investigators have previously said agency officials abolished targeting of conservative groups in those lists in May 2012.

Nebraska-based Acceptance Insurance Holdings had a contract with Armstrong to pay bonuses for winning the Tour de France and other races. The company sued to recover its money after Armstrong admitted in January that he used performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour every year from 1999-2005.

Armstrong's attorneys had asked Travis County judge Darlene Byrne to dismiss the case, arguing the statute of limitations on any fraud or breach of contract claims expired by 2011. The company argued that the clock didn't start until Armstrong admitted doping.

The judge denied Armstrong's request to dismiss on Monday, allowing the case to proceed. Acceptance attorney Mark Kincaid said the company will seek to question witnesses including Armstrong under oath, something the cyclist has been reluctant to do with several legal cases pending against him.

"Lance Armstrong would be the No. 1 witness," Kincaid said.

Armstrong attorney Tim Herman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Armstrong is facing several lawsuits seeking repayment of millions paid to him during his career. Most notable is a federal case seeking to recover more than $40 million paid to Armstrong and his team by the U.S. Postal Service when the agency was his team's primary sponsor. Federal prosecutors have said they intend to seek treble damages, which could push penalties up to more than $100 million.

The Acceptance case is similar to a $12 million lawsuit filed by Dallas-based SCA Promotions. SCA tried to withhold bonuses from Armstrong in 2005 and went to arbitration in an effort to prove he was cheating. Armstrong testified in that case under oath and denied doping, and the case was eventually settled with SCA paying Armstrong more than $7 million.

Armstrong's attorneys have argued in part Acceptance should have previously pursued Armstrong over the doping questions like SCA did.

The SCA and Acceptance cases differ in that SCA has a settlement agreement that Armstrong's attorneys argue cannot be undone under Texas law.

"That's an obstacle they have to overcome that we don't," Kincaid said.

Unlike last year, when the final three contenders came from Barcelona or Real Madrid, only two of the 10 were drawn from the Spanish clubs - Barca's 2011 winner Lionel Messi and Real's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Tottenham Hotspur's Gareth Bale was the only British player nominated, with the Premier League also represented by Manchester United's Robin van Persie.

Robert Lewandowski, whose Borussia Dortmund side lost out to Bayern in the Champions League final at London's Wembley Stadium, was named as was Paris Saint-Germain's Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The award, voted for by a jury of journalists from each of UEFA's member associations, was established in 2011 and was won last year by Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta.

The top 10 players will be whittled down to three candidates in a second vote, with the ultimate winner decided in a live poll on August 29 during the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco.

UEFA said in a statement that it had also launched a Best Women's Player in Europe award, with the first winner to be unveiled on September 5.
