"The author's spouse had a devastating stroke that left her with acute aphasia. This is an anecdotal account of a personal journey we have traveled coping with the loss of language needed to articulate thoughts and ordinary conversation. Years of speech therapy provided opportunities to improve language skills and quality of life. Most of this therapy, following nearly two years of recovery from the physical effects of the stroke, took place in the context of WSU's (Wichita State University) Speech/Language/Hearing Clinic. Master's level students nearing the conclusion of their studies in Communication Sciences and Disorders served as clinical therapists under the watchful supervision of an SLP (Speech Language Pathologist) professor. Throughout these years of participation in therapy, the author sought ways to enhance oral communication with his spouse. He discovered a technique he began to call &#8220Aphasia-Friendly Reading&#8221 that helped make it possible for a person with aphasia participate in story-telling and more accurately put stories and experiences into words. In this book the author explains how he discovered the technique and uses it to enhance oral communication that helps the person with aphasia experience the enjoyment and satisfaction of being a participant in story-telling. The book has an extended addendum of sample &#8220Aphasia-Friendly Readings.&#8221 These are available for families with a family member with aphasia to use and explore as a potential technique for oral reading. Or better, the samples can be idea-starters to write their own stories or discover their own strategies for enhancement of oral communication that includes telling some of their own stories. It is also the author's hope that educators and researchers working with the mysteries of the aphasia disorder might see in this technique potential to further explore and discover creative therapies to improve communication and thus quality of life for persons with aphasia.
