Family and friends of Zemir Begic, a 32 year old Bosnian immigrant, are still looking for answers after he was beaten to death by hammer wielding teens.

"He was just one of those people who didn't know how to hurt a fly," said his cousin, Alma Dzehverovic of Waterloo.

In St. Louis, the slaying was met with protests as Bosnians spilled into the streets Sunday night to voice frustrations over violence touching their community.

"We're just angry because we're trying to protect our community," said Mirza Nukic, 29, of St. Louis. "We're just trying to be peaceful." Ahmad Brooks 49ers Jersey

Nukic was among at least 50 people most Bosnian who briefly blocked Gravois Avenue at Itaska Street on Sunday night to protest the killing. The intersection was near where Begic was attacked by at least three teens with hammers.

One of the suspects, 17 year old Robert Mitchell of St. Louis, has been charged with first degree murder and being an armed criminal. Police also took two other males, ages 15 and 16, into custody. Services will be in Waterloo, relatives said.

Zemir Begic was born in the former Yugoslavia, and his family fled the country during the war in the 1990s, Dzehverovic said. She said Zemir Begic's grandmother was shot in the heart during the conflict in 1994 and died.

The family was placed in a refugee camp in Gasinci, Croatia, living in a mobile home like building without a kitchen or bathroom, Dzehverovic said. He moved to St. Louis several months ago and married a woman, Arijana, whose family lives in St. Louis.

Singing was one of his passions, and Dzehverovic said he liked performing Bosnian music.

"My husband used to own a bar and he'd do karaoke," she said. "He was full of life. He was one of those people, when he walked into the room he made your day. He always took care of his siblings." Daniel Kilgore 49ers Jersey

His father and uncles still live in Waterloo, and his siblings reside in South Dakota.

"He loved America," said Denisa Begic. "We come from Bosnia because we were getting killed, and our homes and families were getting destroyed. Never in my life did I think he would get murdered."

My favourite way to eat ceps (also known as porcini) is to saut them with a little bit of butter, a few shallots and some garlic until they start to caramelise and turn a nice golden brown colour. Then you just need to add some flat parsley and strips of prosciutto before serving with crusty bread. The ingredients are prepared in such a manner that they give their best flavours where the girolles stand out, but maintain a depth so that all the other ingredients compliment each other. I think they are very underused, as people tend to favour ceps and girolles over them, but they are a real unsung hero of the mushroom world. Currently we have a trompette mushroom soup, poached egg and toasted buckwheat on the lunch menu, however one my other favourite ways of using them is to partner them with coffee and liquorice. For example, I use them in a dish with roast salsify and a coffee and cardamom custard (a bit like a savoury crme caramel). PROPOSAL: Peter Davis' development proposal for a new foreshore swimming facility and car park, which could include a visitor information centre and potential future seafood restaurant.

A FORESHORE redevelopment including a new indoor swimming facility could be delivered for about the same price as buying and upgrading the Port Lincoln Leisure Centre, according to resident and ratepayer Peter Davis.

The council has already signed the contracts to buy the leisure centre properties and business, with settlement planned for August this year, but Mr Davis believes it is not too late and has sent the latest version of his plan to council staff and councillors for their consideration.

Mr Davis was a mayoral candidate in last year's local government election and, if elected, he had planned to present his proposal to the council as mayor.

However, despite losing the election, he has decided to put forward his alternative to the new council.

Mr Davis said his proposal would have a similar impact on ratepayers to upgrading the leisure centre but money spent at the leisure centre complex was "dead money" with probable operating losses of at least $250,000 on some of the city's most valuable commercial land.

In contrast, he said his plan would deliver a "community asset for future generations" with negligible annual maintenance costs.

"By constructing a pad similar to the grain silo complex together with a breakwater, a number of opportunities are delivered for a similar cost to that involved with the proposed leisure centre rebuild." Markus Wheaton Jersey

There would also be space for a visitor information centre and a site for a potential future seafood restaurant, which could be sold or leased to subsidise the overall project.

He said the council could consider allowing the Sarin Group to close the Leisure Centre immediately to stop financial loses of close to $1 million if it remained open until the end of 2016 and suggest the Sarin Group redevelop the land, waiving all council and Development Assessment Panel costs and charging heavily reduced or no rates for a certain number of years as an inducement.

"Perhaps the stadium could be redeveloped as ground floor retail and second story tourism accommodation etcetera, again with free planning and development approval."

He said while leisure centre users would be extremely disappointed by its closure, they needed to consider that they had never contributed to the real costs of running the centre and had not undertaken any substantial fundraising for the leisure centre or a new swim centre.

Mr Davis said his estimated costs for the foreshore project were based on actual projects undertaken locally and included design costs, rip rap (rocky rubble), infill, compaction, vehicle access, electricity and sewerage, and the swim centre and pool cost, plus contingency funding.

"By far the biggest capital cost involved is the rip rap of the breakwater and pad wall, yet once constructed the maintenance costs for the next 100 years or more will be near zero . granite is virtually indestructible."

He said the development would also solve the "major liability" of the town jetty, which was built in 1859 and was not in good condition.

"Removing the jetty at least as far as the suggested arm of the breakwater, will eliminate a major cost for council and government in the near future."

Mr Davis said his plan was a "once in a lifetime, golden opportunity to revitalise our seafront" and would address a number of costly issues and deliver a range of projects the leisure centre could never do.

"The leisure centre is now an old facility that has core issues that will not go away . basically due to the sheer volume of the buildings and pool water, together with our small population base to service the large complex.

"The complex placed our council in most difficult financial circumstances and will probably do so again."
