One year on, France's Hollande says will

By Elizabeth Pineau

PARIS (Reuters) - France's Francois Hollande said he was undeterred by a first year in power marked by economic slowdown and a record slump in his personal popularity, arguing his 5-year presidency would achieve results over time.

In comments to correspondents from Reuters and Agence France Presse a week before the anniversary of his May 2012 election win over Nicolas Sarkozy, Hollande shrugged off polls showing his popularity rating around 25 percent, after the sharpest fall for any president in over half a century.

"I'm aware how serious the situation is. It's a president's duty to stay the course and to look beyond today's squalls. It's called perseverance," Hollande said.

"People can criticize my decisions, think I am on the wrong track or have not taken the right route, but if there is one thing I am sure of it's that I have taken major decisions for France - many more in 10 months than were taken in 10 years."

Hollande, France's first Socialist president since Francois Mitterrand, is squeezed between a business sector clamoring for lower taxes and labor costs, euro zone partners pressing for budget cuts and households hostile to austerity measures.

He said he would persevere with measures to restore growth like corporate tax credits aimed at easing headcount costs and a labor reform set to become law in May.

"It's the president who is held to account, and that's quite legitimate. It's up to me to weigh up what I need to do for the country today. To remain in control by being sure of my ideas."

RALLY THE NATION

After his campaign pledges to revive the flagging industrial sector, end a relentless rise in unemployment and meet deficit-cutting targets, Hollande has had to row back on almost all his economic targets, as factory layoffs continue apace.

While he stands by a goal to turn around unemployment by year-end, few believe he can achieve that. Jobless claims rose for the 23rd straight month in March to an all-time high.

Treading a delicate line as he attempts step-by-step reforms that were not part of his election campaign, Hollande said the country should have faith in him.

"The only thing that counts is the results. I have made promises and I will be judged on them," he said. "My hope is to rally the nation and restore confidence. That will take time, but it's my sole objective."

His economic woes aside, Hollande is also suffering from a perception that since he took power France is losing its voice on European policy. His prime minister said this month that France was losing its leadership role.

Foreign investors are watching closely since the government admitted it would need an extra year to reach a European Union budget deficit ceiling of 3 percent of output.

Inside France, where a scandal over an ex-budget minister's secret Swiss bank account has not helped, polls show a slim majority of people would prefer Sarkozy to be president today.

"I realized a long time ago that I would not go far if I let the commentary get to me," Hollande said. "According to what was said about me as a candidate, I had no chance of becoming president."

(Writing by Catherine Bremer; Editing by Robin Pomeroy)

http://petrapdzc.orbs.com/#
http://friendfeed.com/foryyb/b3c2cda0/2011-import-and-export-market-for-brakes-servo
http://hettieynck.jigsy.com/entries/general/download-mark-of-the-beast-hidden-in-plain-sight-e-book
http://odctuqama.altervista.org/download-war-in-afghanistan-is-a-lost-cause-afghan-war-book/
http://ofzmhuqi.metroblog.com/downloads_birth_of_the_clinic_an_archaeology_of_medical_perception_ebook
http://en.netlog.com/shanteldamore/blog/blogid=22209208
http://rosendotuo.skyrock.com/3157893584-A-Companion-to-Medieval-Poetry-Blackwell-Companions-to-Literature-and.html
http://leroyyez.jimdo.com/2013/04/25/download-markers-of-neuronal-injury-and-degeneration-annals-of-the-new-york-academy-of-sciences-book/
http://latonyaipvn.soup.io/post/309858184/Jules-Wabbes-online
http://en.netlog.com/yeseniabluford/blog/blogid=22209220
http://en.netlog.com/dereksharper/blog/blogid=22209221

Book Talk: Tragedy prompted author to wr

By Elaine Lies

TOKYO (Reuters) - Elise is a single mother whose only child is killed in a sudden freak accident. Distraught, she at first wants to join her son - but then realizes she must stay alive to care for his beloved cat, which gradually draws her back into life.

"The Cat", by award-winning Israeli-born author Edeet Ravel, got its start from the July 2011 news that a gunman had opened fire at a youth camp on a Norwegian holiday island, killing 77 people, setting off a compulsion that had her writing so rapidly she completed a draft of the book in six weeks.

Ravel spoke with Reuters about her writing, loss and why she chose a cat to help her heroine back to life.

Q: What got this book started?

A: I began writing the book on July 23, 2011, a day that I remember very well because it was the day after the horrific attack in Norway. I read about the terrible tragedy and I thought of the parents. Many writers try to understand these horrific events by writing about the event itself - the violence, the perpetrators, the victims - but I turned my attention to the bereaved parents, and friends and relatives, because their lives can never be the same, and I began writing "The Cat".

With this novel, even though it was extremely hard to write - in fact, it was the hardest thing I've ever done in my writing career - I had at the same time a compulsion to tell Elise's story. That was really unlike anything I'd ever experienced before. I simply couldn't stop writing. I'd go to bed scratching sentences in the dark as I fell asleep. I woke up with sentences ready to go and I'd have to rush to the computer to get it all down before doing anything else. I had to leave my exercise class to scribble sentences in the margin of the schedule. Like the time that I left a bar mitzvah in the middle and I went to the ladies' room and I began scribbling on the bar mitzvah program. It was going on constantly for about six weeks, until the first draft was finished.

Q: Why was there such a compulsion?

A: I think it was something that had been on my mind for a very long time because I was close to two people who lost children, and because as a parent, like all parents, I live daily with my inability to protect my child from harm, try as I may. So it's a very emotional topic and probably because it was so difficult to write I pushed it away and tried not to write it. I think there was a build-up. There will always be things we can't control with our children, and yet the loss of a child is unimaginable - except that a parent lives with that possibility every minute of every day, from the minute our child is born.

Q: What was your relationship with Elise through this intense process?

A: Elise took over the novel. I always have an entire world set up in my mind before I begin writing, but even more so in this case. It can take years but in the case of "The Cat", it was almost instantaneous. I knew who Elise was, I knew where she lived, I knew her story and her son's story, where she came from and what she felt about everything. So I would say that this was a case where the story led the way and I followed.

Q: She came into your head fully developed?

A: Yes. It must have happened overnight because I read about the events and I went to sleep. I think I was thinking about what had happened all night. When I woke up, I just wrote on my computer screen "The Cat".

Q: When you were living so closely and intensely with that world, was that hard for you?

A: Yes. During the time that I was writing, I can't remember what else I was doing. The novel took over my life and I was writing every free minute that I had, and it was very emotional. It was difficult. I was extremely involved in the story and I felt that I was not inventing events. In one sense I was creating a fictional world, but in another sense I was writing about something so real that happens, sadly, to so many people.

Q: Why a cat, why not a dog?

A: I think that she would not have forgotten, even for a few minutes, that she had a dog to take care of. When she comes home from the hospital, she actually has forgotten that there's a cat in the house. Of course, cats can hide away in a corner and be very quiet and unnoticeable, they can blend in.

That beloved creature is the key to her survival, and the cat represents both the spiritual dimension that keeps her alive but also, I think, a more primal energy or instinct that gives us the energy to go on after a loss like that... I was thinking in terms of both that instinct and the spiritual dimension.

Q: Cats give you more space in general.

A: Yes. A dog can actually communicate more directly. Many dogs have that ability to communicate with humans, but with the cat there's more guesswork involved ... (It's) a mirror of her isolation, the mystery and the inability to understand what has happened to her.

(Reporting by Elaine Lies, editing by Paul Casciato)

http://aracelykvcsf.webs.com/apps/blog/show/25801757
http://en.netlog.com/corneliuslokey/blog/blogid=21878786
http://twitpic.com/ckqgam
http://oydfyctk.metroblog.com/download_celera_corporation_cra_product_pipeline_analysis_ebook
http://masonozzbnq.webs.com/apps/blog/show/25801758
http://friendfeed.com/oemsqs/f4f5d060/download-language-network-grade-6-e-book
http://blog.yahoo.com/_VAUBA2RRDXSCPG2NOZI4E7RYPA/articles/1215777
http://tanyavopo.guildomatic.com/news/show/1376164
http://twitpic.com/ckqgc1
http://jerinykoy.inube.com/blog/3235116/downloads-the-2013-2018-outlook-for-filter-tip-tobacco-and-non-tobacco-cigarettes-85-millimeters-long-in-greater-china/
http://louisalvdt.skyrock.com/3156975292-The-2009-Import-and-Export-Market-for-Parts-and-Accessories-for.html
http://kaceyuina.skyrock.com/3156975308-Downloads-The-2000-Import-and-Export-Market-for-Coal-Lignite-and-Peat.html
http://blog.yahoo.com/_ZYIETHRMNIVIKHY655XBAEUFNE/articles/1412407
http://friendfeed.com/eouayc/129359f0/koreans-in-hawai-i-pictorial-history-1903-2003
http://runbrmhy.metroblog.com/rework_online
http://twitpic.com/ckqgdc
http://kucisoma.nice-albums.com/The-first-blog-b1/Download-Sailing-Directions-For-The-Bristol-Channel-1879-b1-p4.htm
http://chinaloq.jimdo.com/2013/04/20/cell-tissue-and-disease-download/
http://en.netlog.com/christinpeace/blog/blogid=21878797
http://blog.yahoo.com/_JGVKBHOXQHSCAWRXPAVEKOH63Q/articles/1213551
