The European Space Agency's (ESA) Automated Transfer Vehicle-4 (ATV-4), an unmanned cargo freighter, lifted off on an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana at 5:52 p.m. EDT (2152 GMT). The second to last of ESA's five planned station resupply spacecraft launched since 2008,after the iconic physicist known for the theory of relativity

have been put to the test in space and his work has guided robotic spacecraft to other planets. ATV-4 is the first spaceship to bear Einstein's name, at the suggestion of the Swiss delegation to the European Space Agency. Einstein was born in Germany but studied and spent his early career in Switzerland. []

Lifting off from the jungle spaceport along South America's northeast coast, ATV-4 soared spaceward with Europe's largest-ever . Packed with science experiments, crew supplies, a 3D printed tool box and even copies of Einstein's manuscript explaining the foundation for the general theory of relativity, the craft is destined to dock with the orbiting laboratory on June 15.

Ten day trip and traffic delays

The Automated Transfer Vehicle, which is about the size of a London double-decker bus with four solar array wings, has on past missions made the same International Space Station (ISS)-bound trip in half the time.

"The nominal duration from launch to docking is five days to 'phase' or synchronize the orbits ofand ISS," said ESA's lead mission director Jean-Michel Bois in a blog on ESA's ATV-4 "Albert Einstein" website. "These five days are a compromise between various constraints, mainly to minimize the propellant consumption."

Doubling the transfer time for this mission is a combination of traffic on the ground and in space.

"At the beginning, we need to free the Kourou preparation rooms and launch pad as soon as possible to allow [the] launch of numerous other satellites in the year," explained Bois. "With three launchers (Ariane, the Soyuz launcher and Vega), the Kourou logistic situation is complex!"

"At the end (docking), we need to have a free docking port on the space station and must respect several ATV/ISS constraints," he added. The vehicle traffic around ISS and ATV rendezvous constraints allow a docking not before 15 June. This is the explanation of the 10 days."

The docking port where "Albert Einstein" will attach itself to the station is currently occupied by a Russian Progress resupply spacecraft. That vehicle is scheduled to depart next Tuesday (June 11), clearing the aft port of Russia's Zvezda service module for ATV-4's arrival.

ATV-4's laser-guided docking may still be further delayed, depending on what the Progress' departure reveals.

As the Russian craft leaves, the ship's external cameras will focus on navigational sensors on the docking port to confirm that its sensors were not damaged in April when the Progress approached the space station with one of its navigational antennas stuck against its side. The sensors are required for ATV-4 to dock properly.

If there is damage that would prevent ATV-4's arrival, the station crew will go on an unplanned spacewalk to replace the sensors, NASA's station managers said. []

Seven tons of supplies

ATV-4 "Albert Einstein" and its cargo have set a number of records for Europe, including the aforementioned most dry cargo launched, as well as the most diverse cargo at more than 1,400 different items, and the heaviest ship ever lifted by an Ariane rocket.

In total, the 13-ton space freighter is delivering seven tons of supplies for the space station.

The cargo includes science experiments to be conducted by Luca Parmitano, an ESA astronaut whoin late May for a five month stay. His science investigations include a study of emulsions, or suspended droplets in a liquid, and a strict space food diet designed to learn how to feed the astronauts flying on future missions to Mars.

On the flip side, the ATV is also delivering a selection of Italian space food delicacies, including tiramisu, as part of the "crew choice" meal items picked out by Parmitano to share with his Expedition 36 and 37 crewmates.

Also aboard "Albert Einstein" is an empty toolbox and the tools destined to go inside it. The box, which was created using a 3D printer, was too fragile to launch with its tools pre-packed, so the astronauts will have a puzzle-of-sorts to assemble once it's on orbit.

ATV-4 will deliver spare parts for the station too, including a new water pump and recycling unit, a GPS antenna for Japan's Kibo laboratory module and new gas masks to be donned by the crew in the rare case of a fire. The cargo craft also carries water, oxygen and propellant for the ISS, the latter to be used to boost the outpost's orbit around the Earth.

"Albert Einstein" is the fourth out of five ESA Automated Transfer Vehicles. All were named after famous European science figures, , Johannes Kepler, Edoardo Amaldi and Georges Lematre.

The release of Timothy Tracy, 35, was secured with the help of former U.S. Rep. William Delahunt, who has long worked to improve often strained U.S.-Venezuelan ties and was hired by Tracy's family as an attorney in the case.

"He's been informally advising us since pretty much the onset and we retained him last week," Tracy's sister, Tiffany Klaasen, said of Delahunt, a member of the U.S. delegation at the March funeral of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Both she and Delahunt also credited the U.S. State Department.

The expulsion came just as Secretary of State John Kerry was to meet with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua on the sidelines of a regional gathering in Guatemala to discuss relations between the two countries, which have been without ambassadors since 2010.

Delahunt acknowledged the coincidence of Tracy's release but said "no conditions" were set by Kerry for the meeting with Jaua.

He said he had intervened on Tracy's behalf with officials in Venezuela who he said did not include President Nicolas Maduro but "I want to keep those discussions private."

"On both sides there is a desire to have an improvement in the relationship based upon respect, and that's what's important," Delahunt said, suggesting it might help that Kerry, then a Massachusetts senator, met Maduro a decade ago when Delahunt took a delegation of Venezuelans including Maduro on a trip to his district in Cape Cod.

The trip was part of efforts by the so-called "Grupo de Boston" in 2002-2003 to salve internal tensions in the socialist-run South American country after a failed coup against Chavez.

Tracy's expulsion was initially tweeted by Venezuela's interior minister, Miguel Rodriguez, who described Tracy as having been "captured doing espionage in our country." He had previously accused Tracy of funding opposition student groups.

Attorney General Luisa Ortega said in a statement Wednesday that she had asked that the case against Tracy on charges including conspiracy and criminal association be shelved, even though "there were elements that could incriminate him."

Family and friends say the Hollywood producer and small-time actor had been in the country since October making a documentary about Venezuelan politics when he was arrested on April 24 at Caracas' airport as he tried to leave the country to attend his father's 80th birthday in suburban Detroit.

U.S. President Barack Obama had deemed "ridiculous" allegations by Venezuela that he was a spy. Friends said Tracy hardly spoke Spanish and had been very open about his work as he met with Venezuelans on both sides of the country's deep political divide.

Tracy's previous production work had included script consulting on "American Harmony," a documentary about barbershop quartets, and a History channel reality TV show about stock car racing called "Madhouse."

Friends said the Venezuela documentary was Tracy's first big foray into international affairs although he did produce last year a show about smuggling on the northern U.S. border.

"He literally has no political agenda. He is very sympathetic to all sides," his friend Aengus James, director of "American Harmony," said after Tracy's arrest.

Tracy's co-producer on the Venezuelan documentary, Ricardo Korda, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the two met in 2001 while students at Georgetown University and that the film's working title is "Connecting the Dots."

U.S.-Venezuelan relations have been especially tense in recent months. Maduro expelled two U.S. military attaches in March the same day Chavez died, accusing them of trying to foment instability, and Tracy's arrest came amid domestic political turmoil over the opposition candidate's claim that Maduro, Chavez's hand-picked successor, stole April 14 elections.

The Obama administration has backed opposition candidate Henrique Capriles' call for a full recount.

Klaasen said the family spoke frequently to Tracy while he was held.

"He was treated very well," she said. "I was never concerned for his safety."

Klaasen said that even after Tracy was transferred last week to a notoriously unruly prison, El Rodeo, the family was assured he was in no danger.

She said she understood from Tracy's lawyer in Caracas that he was isolated in El Rodeo in a cellblock for foreigners.

James said Tracy would be arriving in California, where he has lived for a decade, on Wednesday afternoon. He later said Tracy had stopped in Florida.

In a television interview and in a longer statement on her website, the New Hampshire senator became one of the first Republicans who didn't write the bill to line up behind the proposal that would offer a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally. Ayotte's support helps the bill's advocates move closer to the 60 votes needed to avoid a filibuster.

"The status quo isn't working. It's de facto amnesty. We need immigration reform that serves the best interests of our country," Ayotte wrote on her website.

A bipartisan group of eight senators four Republicans and four Democrats drafted the bill.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the measure last month with support from two of the Republican authors, along with Sen. Orrin Hatch. However, the Utah Republican says he will vote for the measure in the full Senate only if it includes higher penalties and delayed Social Security benefits for immigrants living illegally in the country.

Separately, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said he will vote for the bill he helped write only with stronger border security than the bill already includes.

As drafted, the legislation also creates a low-skilled guest-worker program, expands the number of visas available for high-tech workers and de-emphasizes family ties in the system for legal immigration that has been in place for decades.

The legislation creates a 13-year route to citizenship for an estimated 11 million immigrants currently living in the United States illegally.

The bill is a "tough but fair way" for the estimated 11 million to come "out of the shadows" and "earn citizenship go to the back of the line, pay taxes, pass a criminal background check, learn English," Ayotte told CBS' "Face the Nation."

It also sets border security goals that the government must meet before immigrants living in the U.S. illegally are granted any change in status.

"As a nation of immigrants, we must remember that we're all descended from people who came here from somewhere else in search of a better life," she said.

"But the broken immigration system we have now is unworthy of a great nation," she added. "It's time for Washington to tackle this problem head on."

Despite support from the White House, the AFL-CIO labor unions and the pro-business Chamber of Commerce, the bill's passage is by no means assured. Sixty votes are usually required to end Senate debate and consider adoption. There are currently 54 senators, including two independents, in the Democratic caucus, and 45 Republicans.

Leaders in the Democratic-led Senate want a final vote on the legislation by July 4.

The Republican-led House, meanwhile, is taking a smaller, piecemeal approach to the issue. Many of the components of the Senate bill are likely to find strong opposition there, giving House Republicans greater sway even before the Senate votes.

"What they have in the Senate has zero chance of passing in the House," said Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. "So, why not come to a conservative like myself and say, he's willing to work with you, why not work with me to make the bill closer to what would be acceptable in the House?"

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said he remained hopeful a bill could be passed but said the bill would have to see changes if it stood any chance in the House.

"It doesn't do anybody any good just to pass in the Senate," Johnson said.

Immigration also has deep political implications.

In 2012, President Barack Obama won re-election with the backing of 71 percent of Hispanic voters and 73 percent of Asian voters. A thwarted immigration overhaul could send those voting blocs more solidly to Democrats' side in future elections. That has led some Republican lawmakers to support immigration reform, but the party's conservative base still opposes any legislation that would create a pathway to citizenship for immigrants living here illegally.

Many members of Evangelical and Baptist groups say their affiliation with the BSA is over.

We believe that the BSA policy change will lead to a mass exodus from the Boy Scout program, as Assemblies of God and many other churches can no longer support groups that are part of an organization allowing members who are openly homosexual, the Pentecostal denomination stated, after nearly two-thirds of the 1,400 BSA voters affirmed the new policy on May 23.

While the National Catholic Committee on Scouting issued no immediate position, with plans to confer with bishops and diocesan scouting committees, it also stated: Open and avowed homosexuals promoting and engaging in homosexual conduct are not living lives consistent with Catholic teaching.

By contrast, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the single largest sponsor behind nearly a third of the troops nationwide deferred to its existing guidelines, saying, Young men who agree to abide by Church standards are welcomed warmly and encouraged to participate.

The Mormon church, which had not campaigned for or against lifting the ban, : "We have followed the discussion and are satisfied that BSA has made a thoughtful, good-faith effort to address issues that, as they have said, remain among the most complex and challenging issues facing the BSA and society today. "

Other religious organizations, such as the National Jewish Committee on Scouting, the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Episcopal Church, and the United Church of Christ campaigned for a full repeal of the ban.

There is a great deal of rhetoric and concern being expressed in church-based scout troops right now, says William Leonard, professor of church history at Wake Forest University, but how that washes out we still dont know, and it will take a while for these communities to sort this out.

In the short term, he says, the congregations that close down scout troops will depend on location and ethos. There will be some congregations where the membership will insist we have to break with the BSA, and there will be some that exist in locations where they will feel pressured to drop their troops, he says.

Some effort will be made to offer alternatives, he notes, but such efforts could be limited and difficult for churches because the churches are not in financial shape to start anything as elaborate and significant as the Boy Scouts.

The issue is close to the heart of Daniel Echols, the associate pastor at St. Johns United Methodist Church in Lubbock, Texas. While the national leadership has not taken a stand on the BSA decision, it does not allow church officials to conduct same-sex marriages, nor does it ordain homosexual clergy. But, says Echols, the church has sponsored local Scout Troop 406 for some 30 years, and the congregation supports the new policy.

Our culture is going through a transition around the issue of homosexuality toward an affirming position, he says, and the church cannot ignore this change.

While the more vocal church leaders may oppose the change, the shift is apparent among young Evangelicals, says Tom Krattenmaker, author of the new book "The Evangelicals You Don't Know." The question many of the new leaders are asking is different from their elders in the church, he says. It is no longer, Is homosexuality OK?' he says, but rather, " 'What am I called upon to do?' They are saying, 'As a Christian, I am called upon to love my fellow human beings?'

Whatever course churches choose as this new BSA policy goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2014, the response has larger implications for religious organizations across the political and denominational spectrum, says Professor Leonard, who points to the rapidly growing segment of the US population that no longer identifies with any church denomination.

A 2012 Pew Research study shows that while one-fifth of the US population claims no religious affiliation, one-third of 18-to 35-year-olds no longer identify with any organized church.

Churches have some soul-searching to do as they take actions that send messages about their willingness to engage with the upcoming generation, Leonard says. Many churches see this issue as drawing an important line in the sand about their basic convictions, he says.

At issue, he says, is how churches remain relevant amid broad societal change. Churches are having to face the issue of their sense of Christian conscience and how that appears in the larger culture which is becoming more welcoming," he adds.

The votes, which had about the same support last year, reflect sustained concern among a large portion of investors and the general population about the practice, which has unlocked a huge amount of oil and gas resources across North America but led to environmentalist worries about water contamination.

Chevron Chief Executive John Watson told the annual meeting of shareholders that his company's level of disclosure was adequate, as he responded to a request from the fracking proposal's supporter for more quantitative measures of safety.

Fracking involves injecting chemical-laced water and sand to break and prop open shale rock to unleash oil and gas. The industry says it is safe when done properly, and the debate has moved to Chevron's own backyard, California, where it is just heating up.

Chevron said 31 percent of its shareholders supported the fracking proposal, compared with about 30 percent for Exxon. Last year, a proposal for a report on fracking risks had support from 27 percent of Chevron shareholders, while a similar proposal got 30 percent support among Exxon investors.

"Shareholders expect Exxon to lead the industry, but almost across the board Exxon is failing to provide the site specific information that shareholders, regulators, and impacted communities need," said Danielle Fugere, president of As You Sow, an investor advocacy group that filed the Exxon resolution.

Another issue of great concern for environmentalists is Arctic drilling, and rival Royal Dutch Shell Plchas just gone through an accident-prone foray into offshore drilling off Alaska's coast over the past year. Watson said Chevron was still evaluating its opportunities in the Arctic region.

"Most of the concerns are around costs," he said, speaking to reporters after the meeting.

A few dozen shareholders gathered outside Chevron's headquarters in San Ramon, California - just east of San Francisco - with many of them decryling the influence of corporate money in U.S. politics.

In Dallas, before Exxon's meeting started, about half a dozen police guarded its barricaded entrance, but there was only one protester outside who came to voice his support for equal benefits for employees in same-sex marriages.

The New York State Common Retirement fund submitted a proposal asking Exxon to amend its employment policy to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

New York pension funds own about 14 million Exxon shares with a value of more than $1 billion. The New York proposal, on Exxon's proxy for the 16th year, received the support of about 20 percent of the company's shareholders.

Exxon said in filings with the SEC that its current policies already prohibit any kind of discrimination.

Separately, support for Exxon's executive pay packages eroded this year.

Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku said the election date should be linked to the automatic dissolution of Zimbabwe's parliament on June 29 at the end of its current five-year term.

A new constitution overwhelmingly accepted in a March 16 referendum requires amendments to electoral laws and voting procedures that lawyers' groups say need about two months to complete.

Veritas, an independent legal research group, said Friday that the court's July date is impractical.

A lawsuit was brought to the court on May 24 to force Mugabe to call early polls. The private court application claimed the country could not be run without the existence of the parliament, rendering the government illegal.

But Veritas said the constitution allows for the executive arm and government ministries to continue operating without a sitting parliament for up to four months after the legislature dissolves on June 29.

Judge Chidyausiku, sitting alongside eight senior judges in the Constitutional Court, said their ruling ordered elections to be held by July 31. He described Mugabe's failure to announce the election date as "a violation of his duties."

Two judges dissented.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, the former opposition leader in a shaky coalition with Mugabe after violent and disputed elections in 2008, wants a vote that would end their power-sharing agreement to be held in September at the earliest.

Tsvangirai said in a statement Friday that the court had no power to set an election date and the judges had "overstepped their mandate."

Zimbabweans still expect electoral and wider reforms along with an intensive voter registration campaign "that would not have anyone unnecessarily disenfranchised" in the upcoming elections, he said.

The judgment was not available later Friday for legal experts to comment. But they did say an appeal cannot be made on the Constitutional Court's ruling and only parliament can pass a law to overturn it.

Mugabe's fractious ZANU-PF party has repeatedly called for early polls to endorse Mugabe, 89, for another five-year presidential term. Mugabe led the nation to independence from colonial rule in 1980.

The new constitution limits the presidential office to two five-year terms but is not retroactive, allowing Mugabe if re-elected to serve up to age 99.

Zimbabwe is scheduled to host the U.N. World Tourism Organization summit in mid-August. An estimated 2,000 foreign delegates are expected to attend and a bitterly contested poll shortly before would likely raise concerns among organizers.

Previous elections since 2000 have been marred by violence, political intimidation and allegations of vote-rigging.

Veritas said disobeying a constitutional court ruling could lead to contempt of court proceedings. But contempt charges in the past against at least two of Mugabe's senior ministers were ignored and no further action was taken.

TORONTO (Reuters) - Rogers Communications Inc and Quebecor Inc's Videotron wireless arm plan to build and operate a shared high-speed wireless network in and around Qubec, a cost-saving arrangement that is expected to stoke competition in the French-speaking Canadian province.

Rogers, the nation's largest wireless provider, now spends far more on its network than its main rivals, Telus Corp and BCE Inc's Bell unit, do on their shared network.

The pairing with Videotron, announced late on Wednesday, means Rogers will narrow that gap. The deal will also help Quebecor's Videotron arm broaden its range of wireless services and perhaps increase market share in Qubec, where the three national operators already have a head start in wireless.

"Quebecor with this deal gets a lot of tools to become more competitive," said Desjardins analyst Maher Yaghi, adding that the deal could eventually lead to an even broader asset sharing arrangement between the two sides.

The 20-year network sharing deal will help the companies expand a high-speed wireless network using technology known as long-term evolution, or LTE, in Qubec and the Ottawa region. The two sides will continue to compete for customers.

"It's going to save both on operating costs and capital requirements to maintain and evolve that wireless network," said Izabel Flis, a buy-side research analyst with Bissett Investment Management, which owns Rogers stock.

Over 10 years, Videotron is set to pay Rogers C$200 million ($194.20 million), and Rogers will pay Videotron C$93 million, based on the fair value of the services each is providing.

Quebecor shares jumped 4.1 percent to C$46.59 in afternoon trading, while Rogers stock was down 0.3 percent at C$47.80.

OTTAWA EYES DEALS

The companies also said Rogers would pay C$180 million to buy Videotron's unused spectrum in the greater Toronto area. Videotron bought those airwaves in a 2008 auction in which the federal government set aside some airwaves for new entrants, including Videotron.

The deal on spectrum puts pressure on the government, whose attempts to foster competition within the sector have been stymied as the small players have struggled. Telus earlier this month bid C$380 million bid for Mobilicity, an upstart that is now fighting to stave off insolvency.

The three major telecoms are scrambling to buy up smaller competition or obtain their airwaves, the lifeblood of mobile providers, as demand explodes for speedy mobile streaming of video and other data-heavy applications.

"Ottawa is in a tight position," Bissett's Flis said. "It's a challenge for them because they really wanted more players ... and it doesn't seem like that's going to be the case, except for Qubec, where Videotron is pretty strong."

Asked to comment on the Rogers-Videotron transaction, the government said all spectrum transfer requests remain subject to its approval. It is currently reviewing a recent Rogers deal to buy spectrum from Shaw Communications, as well as its broader policy on the transfer of spectrum licenses.

Shaw, a dominant cable company in Western Canada without a mobile telephone business, had bought set-aside spectrum in 2008 but later nixed plans to build a wireless network.

Although the government has indicated it is displeased with the Rogers-Shaw deal, Desjardins' Yaghi said the agreement with Videotron may stand a better chance of passing muster, given that company's track record of forcing down prices in Quebec.

"Of the deals that have been announced, Videotron has actually implemented in Quebec what the government hoped to have in creating a fourth, very competitive player," he said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bernard Kerik, a former New York police commissioner and nominee to head the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, was released from federal prison on Tuesday after serving three years for tax evasion and lying to White House officials, a Bureau of Prisons spokesman said.

Kerik, 57, rose to prominence during the administration of New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Once Giuliani's driver, he became the head of the city prison system and then police commissioner.

His career unraveled when he tried to cover up renovations worth $255,000 on his New York City apartment that was paid for by a contractor blacklisted by the city for suspected ties to organized crime. Kerik admitted to making calls on the contractor's behalf to city regulators.

In 2009, Kerik pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to hiding the renovations from the Internal Revenue Service and to lying about the work to White House officials who interviewed him after President George W. Bush nominated him to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

The scandal proved an embarrassment to Giuliani during his unsuccessful 2008 bid to become the Republican candidate for president.

Kerik began a four-year prison sentence in May 2010, and his release after three years was based on good behavior.

He was the first former New York police commissioner to go to jail, according to Thomas A. Reppetto, who co-wrote a history of the city's police department.

Authorities did not disclose whether Kerik went to a halfway house or to his home in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. He will spend the next five months under home confinement or at a halfway house and then be on supervised release for three years.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former News Corp president Peter Chernin and private equity fund Guggenheim Digital Media have placed bids for Hulu, two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters, triggering a tug-of-war for the online video service.

Satellite operator DirecTV and cable operator Time Warner Cable Inc also put in bids, one of the people told Reuters.

Hulu was put on the auction block this year for the second time after disagreement between owners News Corp and Walt Disney Co on how best to operate a Web service that streams TV programs and other videos, Reuters previously reported.

In April, Chernin placed a bid for $500 million, plus an unspecified additional sum to cover Hulu's debt and programming commitments.

Representatives of Guggenheim, Time Warner Cable and DirecTV had no comment. A spokesman for Chernin could not be reached.

Hulu says on its website that it has more than 3 million subscribers paying $7.99 a month for its premium service and that it generated revenues of around $700 million last year. It sells advertising for its free service.

It is being advised in the sale by Guggenheim Partners, a separately funded group from the digital media unit that placed the bid.
