Speaking with young students in Denver, Sotomayor noted that some people asked whether authorities had done enough to track the two suspects, both ethnic Chechens.

"Is that profiling? Could be," she said. "Is it something you just can't ignore? Maybe sometimes not."

Sotomayor, who was in Denver for the dedication of a new state courts building, said police who rely only on racial profiling to decide if someone committed a crime are usually wrong. But she said investigators need to pay attention to some "indicators" about suspects, without saying what they might be.

"It's a fine line society walks in trying to be fair," she said.

Sotomayor, who became the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court when she took office in 2009, said she was the subject of racial stereotyping after her appointment, and it was hurtful.

Her biggest challenge was dealing with other people's low expectations, she said, "and having fun proving them wrong."

Sotomayor took questions from about 100 eighth-, ninth- and 10th-graders before ceremonies to open the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center.

Shortly after Michael Bender, chief justice of the state Supreme Court, introduced her, Sotomayor stepped off the speaker's platform and roamed the aisles around the students, answering questions eye-to-eye and engaging them in banter.

She frequently referred to her new memoir, "My Beloved World," and urged the children to dream big and explore career possibilities, even if they seem intimidating.

"When I was your age, I didn't know there was a Supreme Court," she said. She said she learned about the legal system by watching "Perry Mason" television dramas.

She promised her young audience that if any of them became a justice, "I'll come and swear you in."

The new building was named for Ralph Carr, Colorado's governor from 1939 to 1943, who spoke out for the constitutional rights of Japanese-Americans who were confined to internment camps during World War II.

The $258 million building houses courtrooms for the state Supreme Court and state Court of Appeals as well as offices of the attorney general, the state public defender and court administrators.

While praising the center, Sotomayor looked up from her notes and said with a smile, "The kids in this audience today won't remember a time in their lives when this building didn't exist."

On Thursday night, after speaking at a Metropolitan State University of Denver gymnasium about her struggles and achievements, Sotomayor roamed the aisles flanked by her security detail, shaking hands, posing for photos with children and repeatedly saying: "Thank you. Thank you very much. You're being so nice."

Estela de Carlotto, president of the group, met briefly with the Argentine pope after Francis' general audience in St. Peter's Square. She handed him a written request that he authorize the opening of archives from the Vatican and the Catholic Church in Argentina in hopes of finding clues about the whereabouts of the children.

The organization estimates that around 500 babies were taken from their mothers while they were detained by the military.

"Every detail can help to identify those who were taken from our families," the letter read.

"We ask that they help us, open the archive and investigate who was responsible in the church for the abduction of our grandchildren," de Carlotto told a news conference. She told reporters that Francis had told her: "'You can count on me. You can count on us.'"

The former Jorge Mario Bergoglio was the young head of the Jesuit order in Argentina during the initial years of the dictatorship. In 1998, he was named archbishop of Buenos Aires and the country's top churchman a position he held until he was named pope last month.

Under Bergoglio's leadership, Argentina's bishops issued a collective apology in October 2012 for the church's failures to protect its flock. But the statement blamed the era's violence in roughly equal measure on both the junta and its enemies.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Cell phone service and free Wi-Fi have arrived at another 30 New York City subway stations.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced the expansion Thursday of a program that started with six stations in 2011.

Busy Manhattan stations including Times Square, Columbus Circle and Rockefeller Center are now wired.

Officials say all the system's underground stations will be wired in the next four years.

While cell phones may be used in the stations, there are no plans for service on the moving trains.

The cost of the project is an estimated $200 million, covered by the carriers.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Telling the parents of babies who spit up and cry frequently that their child has gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, makes them more likely to want medicine - even if they're also told it isn't likely to help much, a new study suggests.

Most babies who spit up don't have an acid reflux problem, researchers said, just a not-quite-developed upper stomach valve.

Still, an increasing number of those kids are being labeled as having GERD - even though a definitive diagnosis normally requires an invasive test.

"Roughly 50 percent of babies during the first six months are spitting up enough to bother their parents," said Dr. William Carey from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, who wrote a commentary published Monday with the new study.

"I never offered medication for a kid who was just spitting up and gaining weight well and happy," he told Reuters Health. "I could confidently tell the mother, Look, it's going to be a nuisance until about six months, and then it's gradually going to get better.' It's an irritating variation of normal."

For their study, Laura Scherer from the University of Missouri in Columbia and her colleagues handed out surveys to 175 parents with a hypothetical scenario: their one-month-old infant was spitting up and crying a lot.

The researchers asked parents what they would do if the doctor diagnosed their child with GERD versus if the condition wasn't labeled, as well as what they would do if the doctor told them the medication to treat the condition was ineffective - as research suggests it is - or didn't say anything about its efficacy.

Survey participants were more likely to want medication if their hypothetical infant was given a GERD diagnosis. Even when parents were told the medicine probably wouldn't work, they rated their interest in treatment at about 2.5 out of 5.

However, with no disease label and with information about the medicine's lack of efficacy, parents rated their desire to treat below 1.5 out of 5, the researchers reported in Pediatrics.

"It shows how these kinds of labels can influence how people respond to symptoms," Scherer told Reuters Health. "Words can make an otherwise normal process seem like something that requires medical intervention."

She said current guidelines say the case of an irritable infant who cries and spits up frequently should probably not be treated as GERD - but that if doctors rule everything else out, they can try a two-week course of acid-reducing medication.

That caveat could further confuse doctors and parents into thinking medicine is likely to help, Scherer said.

"It's really becoming pretty clear that GERD in infants is overdiagnosed and overtreated. One reason for this could be that doctors' use of this GERD label could unintentionally increase people's (desire) for medications," she said.

Carey compared what's happening with GERD symptoms to the rising number of very active kids being diagnosed with and treated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

"Parents need to know that there are some annoying or insignificant variations of normal which one really needs to just put up with and not treat as a disease," he said.

"Be darn sure that there is an abnormality before treating it as such."

Merz died in a South African hospital on April 4 at the age of 83, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy said. It described her as a "visionary" who helped found the reserve, which has grown its rhino population despite increasing pressure from poachers that kill the animal for its horns.

Lewa holds more than 120 rhinos, constituting 11 percent and 14 percent of Kenya's black and white rhino populations respectively, according to the conservancy. In the 1980s, Merz and landowners David and Delia Craig founded the Ngare Sergoi Rhino Sanctuary, which later took the Lewa name.

Mike Watson, head of the conservancy near Mount Kenya, said in a statement this month that a memorial service will be held May 12 for Merz, author of "Rhino: At the Brink of Extinction."

He said a rhino calf was born in the reserve on the day of her death.

Also, a female rhino calf that was born this month and is living at a South Florida drive-through safari park was named Anna after Merz's death. It is one of the biggest attractions at the park.

"In recent years Anna had become increasingly concerned for the survivability of rhino as a species, experiencing firsthand in South Africa the devastation wreaked on rhino populations in her adopted country of residence," Watson said.

"Sadly we in Kenya have not been immune to the insatiable appetite for rhino horn in the Far East and Anna's beloved rhino here on Lewa have come under sustained pressure from criminal gangs intent on profiting at the cost of this iconic animal," he said.

The South African government said a record 668 rhinos were killed in the country in 2012, an increase of nearly 50 percent over the previous year. The rate of poaching so far this year suggests that the numbers of slain rhino in South Africa could exceed that of last year.

Demand is growing in Vietnam and elsewhere in Asia where rhino horn is believed to have medical benefits despite evidence to the contrary. The horn is made of keratin, a protein also found in human fingernails.

On April 18, Irish police and museum officials said masked men stole stuffed rhino heads containing eight valuable horns from the warehouse of Ireland's National Museum. The heist, linked to an Irish Gypsy gang that allegedly specializes in such raids across Europe, reflects the soaring prices that rhino horn fetches on the illegal market.

The entire panel was sent home after the alternates were chosen on Tuesday.

The four men and two women alternates were selected after attorneys for Jackson's mother and concert giant AEG Live questioned them for several hours.

On Monday, the jury of six men and six women was chosen.

The latest evidence for the link between earthquakes and major storms comes from Virginia, a state pummeled byin 2011. The storm hit just five days after the magnitude-5.8 , so hundreds of aftershocks were still rattling the state.

Seismologists saw a spike in aftershocks a few hours after the storm roared through, said Xiaofeng Meng, a graduate student at Georgia Tech and lead author of a study examining the aftershocks. The results of the research were presented Friday (April 19) at the Seismological Society of America's annual meeting in Salt Lake City.

The one-two punch was a unique natural experiment. An unusually dense network of earthquake monitors was already in place to watch the Virginia earthquake's residual rumblings. And the sheer number of aftershocks meant scientists had enough temblors to see the storm's possible effects.

Meng said the drop in air pressure as the hurricane passed over the region could have changed forces on faults stressed by the earthquake, sparking aftershocks. Perhaps the lower pressure unlocked the faults, letting them slip and thus causing earthquakes. The pressure drop from Hurricane Irene was within the range that can trigger earthquakes, Meng told OurAmazingPlanet.

In a similar vein, a 2009 study published in the journal Nature suggested pressure changes fromare linked to slow-slip earthquakes, the gentle events that last for hours or days and are never felt at Earth's surface. Another way hurricanes and typhoons (same storms, different names) may start earthquakes is through heavy rains, which spawn landslides. As with atmospheric pressure changes, the , according to research presented at the 2011 American Geophysical Union annual meeting.

The Georgia Tech team is not yet convinced the sharp increase in aftershocks after Hurricane Irene is truly linked to the hurricane it could just be a coincidence, Meng said. For example, there were unexplained small spikes before the hurricane arrived in Virginia.

"This is a debated topic," Meng said. "We hope to find solid evidence to prove or disprove the case."
