Millepied, 35, who last year married the Oscar-winning star of "Black Swan," Natalie Portman, with whom he has a son, will take up his new role in October 2014.

The announcement by the director of the Paris Opera, Nicolas Joel, ended months of speculation over the successor to Brigitte Lefevre, director of dance at the Paris Opera since 1995, who plans to retire at the end of the 2013-14 season.

The same position was held for several years by Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who died in 1993.

A statement from Paris Opera said Millepied was born in Bordeaux and trained at the Lyon Conservatory.

He joined the School of American Ballet as a teenager before joining New York City Ballet where he became a principal dancer in 2002.

He was both the choreographer and a dancer in the 2010 film "Black Swan," a psychological thriller that received five Academy Award nominations and won Portman the best actress award.

Millepied retired in 2011 to focus on choreography and moved to Los Angeles where he founded the L.A. Dance Project, which made its debut last September.

Millepied is also the new face of Yves Saint Laurent's men's fragrance "L'Homme Libre" - French for "The Free Man" - and also features in ads for Air France.

Almost all the 150-plus dancers in the Paris company are trained at the Paris Opera Ballet School with admittance to the corps de ballet decided by an annual competition.

Lefevre joined the Paris Opera Ballet School when she was 8 years old and entered the corps de ballet aged 16, so Millepied's appointment came as a surprise to many.

"We're super happy to be here," he said Sunday night as his NFC champion San Francisco 49ers arrived in the Big Easy for the big game.

"I think this team has the best focus on unity and winning I've ever been a part of."

Considering that Harbaugh was an NFL quarterback for 14 seasons and a successful college coach before joining the 49ers, he knows something about winning.

Under Harbaugh, San Francisco has been to two NFC title games and, now, to its first Super Bowl in 18 years. The Niners (13-4-1) will play Baltimore (13-6), coached by Harbaugh's older brother, John, in next Sunday's Super Bowl.

He is certain his team is ready for the task as the 49ers seek their sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy; they are 5-0 in Super Bowls.

"These are uncharted waters for a rookie Super Bowl coach," Harbaugh said. "But that's exciting. It's a great thrill, and we have a desire to be in uncharted waters. We always strive for that kind of challenge."

Earlier in the evening, with a team flag waving from an open window of their chartered plane, the 49ers arrived in a businesslike manner. The players calmly walked off the airplane no video recorders or cameras, no waves to onlookers.

Most of the team's veteran players disembarked first, including center Jonathan Goodwin, who won a Super Bowl three years ago with the Saints.

"You get to go to the Super Bowl with your childhood team, so that's something special to me," he said. "So hopefully I can find a way to win the Super Bowl with my childhood team."

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, wearing a red wool cap sporting "49ers" on it, mouthed the words to a song on his headphones as he walked on the tarmac.

He seemed just as relaxed 90 minutes later as he met the media.

"Pressure comes from a lack of preparation," said Kaepernick, who took over as the starter when Alex Smith got a concussion in November and has been sensational in keeping the job. "This is not a pressure situation. It's a matter of going out and performing."

Harbaugh said the 49ers came to New Orleans on Sunday to simulate a normal week. He likened their trip to his strategy the last two seasons when the 49ers spent a week in Youngstown, Ohio, between Eastern games rather than return to the Bay Area.

He liked the way the players and coaches bonded during that experience.

"Same approach," Harbaugh said. "Enjoy the moment and the preparation. I think our team enjoys that the most: the meetings, the preparation and then, especially, the competition."

"Bad Teacher" will be written and executive-produced by "My Name Is Earl" and "Community" veteran Hilary Winston, with Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who were behind the film, executive-producing as well. The new pilot orders follow on the heels of CBS ordering pilots for a small-screen adaptation of the Eddie Murphy film "Beverly Hills Cop" - which is being executive-produced by "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan, and Murphy will appear in - as well as the sitcom "Friends With Better Lives" and the detective drama "Backstrom."

Initially CNBC was only talking to Ackman, but then the cable TV station put Icahn on as well and all hell broke loose.

The argument centered on nutritional supplements company Herbalife Ltd , in which Ackman has had a well-publicized short position that Icahn has slammed.

Icahn, 76, who has gone from feared corporate raider to activist investor in more than three decades of dealmaking, called Ackman, 46, a "liar" and "the most sanctimonious guy I ever met in my life."

In a tirade that included expletives, Icahn said he would never invest with Ackman and predicted investors in his Pershing Square hedge fund would lose a lot of money on the Herbalife bet. U.S. news outlets have reported that Icahn has a long position in Herbalife, although he has not confirmed that.

Ackman, who is usually much more restrained than Icahn when speaking publicly, got in a few verbal shots himself. Icahn "does not have a good reputation" and "is not an honest guy," he said.

The altercation quickly became the talk of the financial world, both on trading floors and on Twitter.

"I will never delete today's Ackman vs Icahn CNBC debate from my DVR. Even when DVRs are like Betamaxes, I'll force my grand kids to watch," tweeted Eric Jackson of hedge fund Ironfire Capital LLC.

Business Insider Deputy Editor Joseph Weisenthal tweeted: "It's never going to get any better than what we just saw."

The influential blog ZeroHedge called it the "Ultimate Hedge Fund Deathmatch: Icahn And Ackman As The Real Billionaire Husbands Of CNBC Going Wild."

BusinessInsider held an online poll: "Who Won The Brawl Between Carl Icahn And Bill Ackman?" As of 5 p.m. New York time, 70 percent of the more than 1,800 people who voted declared Ackman the victor.

Neither Ackman nor Icahn could be reached for comment after the CNBC show.

Ackman has called Herbalife a "well managed pyramid scheme" that he predicted will collapse. Herbalife has denied the allegation.

"On CNBC today, Mr. Ackman continued to misrepresent Herbalife," an Herbalife spokeswoman said on Friday.

DECADE-OLD DISPUTE

The genesis of their feud stems from a nasty contractual dispute involving a real estate company deal 10 years ago, when Ackman was running his former hedge fund, Gotham Partners, which he co-founded in 1993 with former Harvard Business School classmate David Berkowitz.

After eight years of litigation, a court ruled in Ackman's favor and Icahn was forced to pay Gotham $4.5 million, plus interest.

Indeed, the discussion on CNBC often had little to do with the merits of Ackman's view of Herbalife. At times, Icahn also feuded with CNBC host Scott Wapner, accusing him of "bullying" him when he was pressed on whether he had gone "long" on Herbalife shares.

Icahn may have little to lose from the dustup given that he is simply managing his own money these days. Ackman, on the other hand, manages about $11 billion at Pershing Square, including money from many prominent institutional investors.

Herbalife shares briefly surged over 5 percent when Icahn said during the row that Ackman, by going public with his big short position, would cause the "mother of all short squeezes" in the stock.

A short squeeze is when short sellers are forced to cover their position, a move that pushes a stock higher.

Ackman and Icahn's dislike of each other is well known in financial circles. Some of the tension stems from the fact they both specialize in the same game - taking big positions in companies and agitating for management changes.

Ackman's bet against Herbalife is also being challenged by another big hedge fund player, Third Point manager Daniel Loeb, who has said he holds a big long position on the stock.

Five months later the new primate, Cardinal Jozef Glemp, was making a dramatic appeal, asking Poles to "save lives and avoid bloodshed" under the martial law that had just been imposed by Communist authorities who felt threatened by massive opposition from the Solidarity freedom movement.

Glemp, the longtime head of Poland's influential Roman Catholic church, died Wednesday in Warsaw from lung cancer at the age of 83, church officials said.

A complicated figure, Glemp helped lead Poland peacefully through martial law and the fight against communism but was later labeled an anti-Semite for his opposition to removing a convent near the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz.

In the early 1980s, a time of great national turmoil, Glemp's goal was to protect the people, a mantle he carried through his 23 years leading the church in this predominantly Catholic nation.

Warsaw Archbishop Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz said Thursday that Glemp was a leader "in a difficult time" and praised his prudence and wisdom.

At the start, many Poles were disappointed to see the modest and little-known bishop from Warmia succeed such giant as Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, who had become a legend of the church's resilience and resistance under Communist repression. Many Poles wanted the church to lead them in their fight against the Communist regime.Few knew that Glemp had been Wyszynski's secretary and his choice as successor.

Glemp, a lawyer by education, was a person of "great humility and wisdom, guided by common sense," said Lublin Archbishop Stanislaw Budzik."Many did not understand him at the time. It later turned out he was a prophet" who saw the dangers of violence and prevented it.

In a sermon after martial law was declared, Glemp said that an "act of mad despair means a defeat."He then protested vehemently when the Communist regime tried to interpret his words as siding with them.

The year when Glemp was appointed primate 1981 was tempestuous yet filled with hope. That was the heyday of the Solidarity freedom movement, when the nation openly opposed Communist authorities with massive strikes and when the threat of a Communist clampdown and even a possible Soviet intervention was mounting.

Glemp was criticized for his conciliatory tactics but they helped Poland go mostly peacefully through 18 months of harsh military rule and through the economic struggles of the 1980s.

Under Glemp's guidance, the church offered spiritual and material support to Solidarity activists and dissidents, many of whom lost their jobs. He supported Solidarity leader, Lech Walesa, who won the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize for his advocacy of freedom.

Glemp's calm also disarmed the bitterness and anger that rose in Poland after the secret security abducted and murdered a pro-Solidarity priest, Jerzy Popieluszko, in 1984.Glemp later said, however, he had a sense of guilt for having failed to save the priest despite his efforts.

A clever political strategist, Glemp played an active role in helping end communism in Poland, when church authorities initiated and guaranteed the fairness of political negotiations between Solidarity and the weakening Communists in 1988 and 1989. The Communist regime ended peacefully through partially free elections in 1989.

When it came to religion, Glemp was a staunch conservative. In the 1980s, he opposed Jewish demands to have a convent and its cross moved from near Auschwitz, the former Nazi death camp, considered by Jews to be the largest cemetery of Holocaust victims.His reluctance, before he finally obeyed orders from Polish-born Pope John Paul II, earned him the label of anti-Semite in much of the world.

In 2001, he did not attend a ceremony honoring Jews killed by their Polish neighbors during World War II. But prior to that, he led prayers by Polish bishops in Warsaw, asking forgiveness for the crimes of Poles against Jews.

Under Poland's young democracy and its painful transformation to a market economy, Glemp stressed the need to protect ordinary people who were losing jobs by the tens of thousands. He also campaigned to protect the Catholic faith, which for centuries was a defining feature for the Polish people, and which he believed to be threatened by lay attitudes coming from Western Europe.

People who knew him said he was open, friendly and attentive to the problems of others.

Glemp remained the head of the Polish bishops' conference until 2004, and retained the title of primate, the top leader, until 2009.His leadership largely coincided with the papacy of John Paul II, who was elected pope in 1979 and died in 2005, and whose words and first visit to Poland as pope in 1979 had inspired the Solidarity movement.

Glemp was awarded Poland's highest civilian distinction, the Order of the White Eagle.

Three days of funeral ceremonies will begin Saturday and he will be buried Monday at St. John's Arch Cathedral in Warsaw.

International Cycling Union President Pat McQuaid said Wednesday he was too busy to attend all the meetings of the Olympic commission evaluating bids for the 2020 Summer Games.

"It's quite simple," McQuaid told The Associated Press. "I have too much going on and I can't afford to be spending two weeks away from the office in March."

McQuaid, an IOC member from Ireland, was appointed to the 10-person commission in September as the representative of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations. He has been replaced by Patrick Baumann, a Swiss IOC member and secretary general of international basketball federation FIBA.

"He couldn't meet the schedule and we had to find someone else," IOC vice president Craig Reedie, who chairs the evaluation commission, told the AP. "That's all. There's nothing sensitive about it in any way."

The IOC panel is assessing the 2020 bids from Madrid, Tokyo and Istanbul. The commission will pay four-day visits to each city in March and compile a detailed report ahead of a special briefing with the candidates in July in Lausanne, Switzerland. The IOC will choose the host city Sept. 7 in Buenos Aires.

McQuaid told the IOC he would be unable to go on the visits to all three cities.

"I contacted ASOIF, because I was their representative, and suggested that they find a replacement," McQuaid said.

It's not the only position McQuaid has relinquished in recent months. He lost his spots on the World Anti-Doping Agency executive committee and foundation board at the end of the year. He was replaced by Ugur Erdener of Turkey.

McQuaid and former UCI president Hein Verbruggen have come under scrutiny in the wake of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report that detailed systematic doping by Armstrong and his teams. Armstrong has been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned from sports for life.

The report included allegations by Armstrong's former teammates that he paid the UCI $125,000 to cover up a positive test from the 2001 Tour of Switzerland. While admitting to doping in his interview last week with Oprah Winfrey, Armstrong confirmed making a donation to the UCI but denied the 2001 positive test and any cover up.

"That story isn't true. There was no positive test. No paying off of the lab. The UCI did not make that go away. I'm no fan of the UCI," Armstrong told Winfrey.

McQuaid and Verbruggen both said the interview vindicated them and the UCI of any improper collusion with Armstrong. However, WADA director general David Howman said Armstrong's financial donation to UCI was inappropriate and the matter needs to be clarified.

The UCI has set up an independent commission to investigate the doping scandal and the federation's links with Armstrong. McQuaid and Verbruggen are expected to meet with the three-member commission during its scheduled April 9-26 hearing in London.

Other members of the 2020 Olympic evaluation commission include IOC members Guy Drut of France, Frank Fredericks of Namibia, Nat Indrapana of Thailand and Claudia Bokel of Germany; El Salvador Olympic committee head Eduardo Palomo; Paralympics representative Andrew Parsons of Brazil; and IOC executive director Gilbert Felli.

Shares of the world's leading chipmaker slid more than 5 percent in after-hours trade on Thursday after it projected this year's capital spending at $13 billion, plus or minus $500 million, exceeding many analysts' estimates for about $10 billion.

Intel said $2 billion of its increased expenditures would go toward expanding a facility for researching future manufacturing technology. Some analysts worried that with PC sales already slow, expanding too quickly may create excess capacity that could hurt the bottom line.

"People are starting to freak out about the capex," said Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon. "The concern is that if I spend a lot of money and I build up my factories, I don't have enough demand to fill them. They have very high fixed costs, and it pulls your margins down."

Outgoing Chief Executive Paul Otellini, who plans to retire in May after a successor is identified, said the investment in manufacturing would lower costs in the long run.

"The leading edge capacity is the lowest cost for us on a per unit basis," Otellini told analysts on a conference call. "Regardless of what you think the size of the market is, the leading edge fabs are the single greatest asset that we have."

Otellini said the higher capex is not intended to bankroll a foundry or contract chipmaking business, but he did not rule out manufacturing semiconductors for other chip companies as long as that did not empower a rival.

Intel has agreed to manufacture custom chips on behalf of networking equipment company Cisco Systems Inc, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. An Intel spokesman declined to comment.

In the fourth quarter, Intel's revenue was $13.5 billion, compared with $13.9 billion a year earlier. Analysts had expected $13.53 billion.

It estimated first-quarter revenue of $12.7 billion, plus or minus $500 million. Analysts expected $12.91 billion.

STRUGGLING IN MOBILE

Intel is used to being king of the personal computer market, particularly through its historic Wintel alliance with Microsoft Corp, which has led to breathtakingly high profit margins and an 80 percent market share.

But it has struggled to adapt its technology for smartphones and tablets, a market dominated by Qualcomm Inc, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Nvidia Corp. PC makers are struggling to stop a decline in sales as consumers hold off on buying new laptops in favor of more nimble mobile gadgets.

Microsoft's long-awaited launch of Windows 8 in October brought touchscreen features to laptops but failed to spark a resurgence in sales that Intel and many PC manufacturers had hoped for.

Intel's hefty investment plans reflect its confidence in the future, even as Wall Street worries about the chipmaker's struggle to gain traction in the mobile market.

"Our core advantage really is our manufacturing leadership," Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith told Reuters. "450 will give us a significant cost advantage relative to others."

Intel is expanding its research fab in Hillsboro, Oregon, to develop technology for manufacturing chips on 450 mm silicon wafers, a complicated step up from the current 300 mm wafer standard.

Larger wafers can translate into big savings because more chips can be etched onto each of them. But building 450 mm plants is expected to be so expensive that only a few industry leaders, including Intel, Samsung Electronics and TSMC, are expected to have the necessary scale.

Some Wall Street analysts gave Intel high marks for expected operating efficiency this year.

"The revenue isn't going to be there, but the margin and expense control is going to stabilize the bottom line," said Cody Acree, an analyst at Williams Financial. "I think it's probably a success if you can be flat in an industry that most people expect to be flat to down."

Intel foresees first-quarter gross margins of 58 percent, plus or minus two percentage points. Analysts on average expected gross margins of about 56 percent for the current quarter, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

It estimated a 2013 gross margin of 60 percent, plus or minus a few percentage points. Analysts on average had expected 59 percent.

Net earnings in the December quarter were $2.5 billion, or 48 cents a share, compared with $3.4 billion, or 64 cents a share, year-ago period.

Analysts had expected 45 cents, and said the surprisingly strong performance was partly due to a lower effective tax rate of 23 percent. This was below Intel's forecast of about 27 percent.

Still, shares of Intel fell 5.6 percent in after-hours trade to $21.43, after closing up 2.58 percent at $22.68 on the Nasdaq.

"This is a company that is continuing to spend money to participate in the market. That may concern some investors," said Doug Freedman, an analyst at RBC Capital.

The EOC announced its plan for a continental Games last week amid some opposition, as Hickey said, from "within the Olympic movement".

The EOC has yet to get all the big Olympic sports federations on board, including the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) which had fixed its calendar up to 2016 long before the new event was announced, swimming and basketball.

"We do not want to do a copy of the Olympics. We want to be innovative and different," EOC president Hickey told Reuters in an interview. "We will have the core sports but we are flexible.

"The reason we are staging it that year is that we see in the future for this to be a qualifying event for the Olympics (held a year later)," he said. "But that has to be negotiated with the federations and the International Olympic Committee."

The plan is to have 15 of the 28 Olympic sports represented, among them volleyball, boxing, judo and rugby sevens.

Three non-Olympic sports, including dance sport and karate, will also be part of the event which will have some 7,000 athletes compared to the 10,000 at the Olympics.

"We are the only continent without senior Games. We do not have an event like the Asian Games or the Pan American or African Games," said Hickey, who also heads the Irish Olympic Committee.

The first edition of the four-yearly event will be staged by cash-rich Baku which had unsuccessfully bid for the summer Olympics of 2016 and 2020.

"Baku and Azerbaijan are not strapped like the rest of Europe. We wanted to get this off the ground and this event will be at no expense to the national Olympic committees," said Hickey.

ECONOMIC WORRIES

Among those concerned about the event is the IAAF, which sees the European Games as cutting into its revenue streams at times of economic strain.

Swimming, another top Olympic sport in terms of viewership and commercial appeal, has also not finalized its participation.

"I understand some international federations are fearing it may dilute their sponsorship," Hickey said. "They (IAAF) have a difficult situation as they had committed most of their events to 2016 and tied in with sponsors."

Hickey said talks would continue but the EOC was determined to push ahead even if it meant not having the Olympic core sport of athletics in its first European Games.

"I think we will reach an agreement. That is what we would wish for but, having said that, if it is not possible it will not be possible. Then we will have to do it in 2019.

"This is a trial run, we want to be flexible to shape it in order to have long continuity," he said.

He said the European Games could also be an option for cities unable or unwilling to shoulder the multi-billion-dollar burden of hosting the Olympics.

"If it is successful, there's a great attraction. For many European cities this size suits them really well," said Hickey, adding that a budget had yet to be finalized.

"Invariably we have one or two European cities who lose out on the (Olympic) Games and this would be a good alternative."

The European Games had already attracted interest from sponsors, said Hickey.

"It is very encouraging. There are already three or four pan-European companies interested. They are looking for something a little lower than Olympic Games but also very European."

"The same goes for broadcasting. We already have had talks with the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) and they are very enthusiastic."

Susan Elizabeth MacDonnell pleaded guilty in 2011 to aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessities of life to her then one-year-old adopted daughter, Rachel.

Judge Kevin Coady of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court also sentenced the 44-year-old woman to three years probation.

MacDonnell had apologized for her actions earlier this week during a sentencing hearing.

On Monday, a forensic psychiatrist testified that MacDonnell deprived her daughter of food in an attempt to showcase her devotion as a mother.

The court heard MacDonnell starved the girl for an extended period of time and then tampered with her feeding tube at a Halifax hospital, where the child was being treated for dehydration and malnutrition in early 2010.
