A group of 17 armed poachers entered the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park in the Central African Republic in an effort to reach the Dzanga Bai, a clearing where anywhere from 50 to 200can be found, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This area, known to locals as the "village of elephants," attracts herds of elephants who gather daily to drink mineral salts in the sands.

The Central African Republic has been plagued by political instability since the beginning of the year, and poachers in the region are taking advantage of this turmoil to fuel the , said Jim Leape, WWF's international director general. []

"Unless swift and decisive action is taken, it appears highly likely that poachers will take advantage of the chaos and instability of the country to slaughter the elephants living in this unique World Heritage Site," Leape said in a statement. "Wildlife crime is not only a consequence of instability, but a cause. It fuels violence in the region, in a vicious circle that undermines the stability of these countries and their economic development." 

Unless they are stopped, the poachers could cause one of the biggest elephant massacres in the region since February 2012, when at least 300 elephants were killed in Cameroon's Bouba N'Djida National Park, WWF officials said. The group called on the country's government and international aid to take action to protect the elephants.

"Central African Republic has to immediately follow through on its promise of two weeks ago to mobilize troops to end poaching in the region," Leape said. "WWF also calls on the international community to immediately provide assistance to Central African Republic in restoring peace and order in the country, and to preserve its unique natural heritage."

On Monday, two WWF-supported researchers were approached in the forest by three poachers armed with Kalashnikov rifles. The poachers asked for directions to an observation tower in the Dzanga Bai clearing that is typically used by scientists and tourists to observe the elephants.

The scientists provided false information, but heard gunshots coming from the Bai as they fled the scene, according to WWF officials.

That same day, two park guards reported seeing armed individuals on the Dzanga Bai observation platform .

WWF officials are hoping to save the elephants by drawing attention to the dire situation in Africa, they said.

"We also urge Cameroon and Republic of Congo to provide support to the Central African Republic in preserving this World Heritage site, which not only encompasses the Bai, but also includes large neighboring areas of these two countries," Leape added. "Finally, ivory consumer country governments, and notably China and Thailand, must redouble their efforts to end demand the root cause of the extermination of elephants across Africa."

The final tally reported Monday was 286 deaths or two more than the record set in 2002.

But there were far fewer illnesses overall, and fewer serious cases than in previous years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had predicted it would be a bad year because of weather conditions that promote breeding of the mosquitoes that spread the virus to people.

The CDC report Monday showed Texas had nearly a third of the serious cases, and about a third of the deaths.

West Nile virus was first diagnosed in Uganda in 1937, but no cases were reported in the U.S. until 1999 in New York. It gradually spread to the West Coast.

Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette, who has a underperform rating on the company's stock, said he believes initial shipment and sales volumes for the BlackBerry Q10 - a device that comes with a physical keyboard - have not been strong.

Faucette said sales of the BlackBerry Z10 - a full touchscreen device also powered by the new BB10 operating system - are slowing down as well.

"We believe the production levels of 1.5 million to 2 million units per month are well in excess of the sell-through," Faucette said in a note to clients on Tuesday, adding that the company is likely going to be forced to cut production levels.

The Pacific Crest report comes less than a week after Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said sales of the Q10 were strong in both Canada and Britain - the two countries in which the device has been launched.

BlackBerry's volatile shares were down 5 percent at $14.80 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq, while its Toronto-listed stock was down 5.5 percent at C$14.88.

The Pacers didn't let the Knicks get away from them on fast breaks, didn't let the Knicks get good 3-point looks and didn't even give New York a chance to challenge late.

Instead, Roy Hibbert, Paul George and Indiana showed what it can do when it plays its game.

Hibbert finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while George nearly came up with another postseason triple double, leading the Pacers to a crucial 82-71 Game 3 victory and a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals.

"That's how we play Pacers basketball," George said. "We just locked in, and it was just helping one another on the defensive end."

Sure, Indiana could have been sidetracked by the embarrassing 26-point loss at New York in Game 2. Or it could have gotten caught up in the pregame banter about Amare Stoudemire's impending return or J.R Smith's sudden illness.

But the Pacers never got distracted.

Coach Frank Vogel's bunch followed the same game plan it has all season -- locking down defensively, winning the rebounding battle and protecting its home court.

Check, check and check.

Indiana limited the Knicks to 35.2 percent shooting from the floor, allowed just three 3-pointers and forced 15 turnovers. And, of course, the league's No. 1 rebounding team dominated the glass again, finishing with a 53-40 rebounding edge and a 20-10 edge in second-chance points.

It was enough to allow the Pacers to overcome a 28 for 80 shooting performance that included a season-high 33 3-point attempts.

"They outrebounded us, they won the hustle today, the little things," Carmelo Anthony said. "It all came down to us not scoring the basketball. ... We can't beat anyone scoring 71 points."

It's the same formula Indiana won Game 1, and now, if Indiana wins a fifth straight home playoff game Tuesday night, it will head back to Madison Square Garden with a commanding lead over a longtime rival.

How did the Pacers do it again? They relied on scoring balance and in-your-face defense.

HIbbert kept loose balls alive in his best playoff performance of this postseason. Vogel called it his best playoff game ever.

George struggled to score, finishing with 14 points, but he also finished had eight rebounds and eight assists and caused plenty of consternation for Anthony and others on defense.

David West got off to a slow start but finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds and George Hill knocked down five 3s and he finished with 17 points.

"We didn't change much in terms of our physicality," West said. "I just thought we were a little bit more precise defensively in terms of our communication and we shored some things up. We didn't allow them to get some of the things they got in the second game in New York."

The Knicks had only one player in double figures. Carmelo Anthony scored 21, but the NBA scoring champion went j6 of 16 from the field, managed only two points and no baskets in the fourth quarter and finished well below his playoff scoring average of 29.3.

He was hardly alone.

Smith gave it a go although his shooting woes continued. He went 4 of 12, scored nine points and walked directly to locker room when he was replaced midway through the fourth quarter. A few minutes later, he came back into the game and is now just 11 of 42 from the field in the series.

Stoudemire looked rusty in his return, making just 3 of 8 eight shots -- one a dunk, another on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the third quarter -- and finished with seven points and two rebounds.

The Knicks led once in the game, for just 76 seconds, and barely escaped the ignominy of setting a franchise playoff record for fewest points in a game. The all-time low is 67. New York didn't hit 68 until Kenyon Martin's dunk with 1:39 to play.

"Offensively, we just didn't have anything," coach Mike Woodson said. "I thought defensively, we hung in there and did what we had had to do, but we just didn't have any offensive pop and we have to figure that out."

And fast or the second-seeded Knicks will spend the rest of this series playing catch-up.

New York had a chance midway through the third quarter when it closed the deficit to 44-41. But instead of faltering, as the Pacers did in Game 2, they thrived on New York's miscues.

When Tyson Chandler was called for his third foul, he lost his cool and was whistled for a technical foul. That allowed the Pacers to score three points on the possession. West followed that with a 19-foot jumper and after Chandler went 1-of-2 from the free throw line, Indiana seized control with a 9-0 run that made it 58-44.

Stoudemire's buzzer-beater to end the quarter got the Knicks within 62-51 and New York eventually got as close as 65-57 with 9:10 left. But Indiana answered with seven straight points and never let the Knicks challenge again.

"Our guys usually do what you emphasize," Vogel said. "We don't want to do it at the expense of giving up things up at the rim. But we were able to guard the paint and the 3-point line, and that's the goal."

DETROIT (Reuters) - Kevin Baillie, co-founder of a visual effects company that works on major motion pictures, had never been in a car like his new Tesla Model S electric sedan, but somehow it looked familiar.

"When I got into my car, I thought, 'Wait a minute, this looks like something from the movie I just worked on,'" said Baillie. "It's like Star Trek."

The ringing endorsement of car enthusiasts like Baillie has given Tesla Motors Inca much needed stamp of approval in a "green" car industry that has seen high-profile failures and struggles over the last year.

The Model S is ten-year-old Tesla's first attempt to reach a mainstream audience for electric cars. Sales of the five-passenger sedan have outpaced expectations since its launch last year, and on Thursday, Consumer Reports magazine awarded it with a near-perfect rating.

The review coupled with Tesla's first-ever quarterly profit boosted the company's shares 36 percent to an all-time high of $75.77 - more than quadruple its 2010 initial public offering price of $17.

The stock's surge came as a surprise to a number of investors betting on Tesla's decline. Tesla is more heavily shorted than 98 percent of the roughly 4,200 companies tracked by Thomson Reuters StarMine.

Many industry experts and analysts celebrated Tesla's fortunes, but warned that the Model S - which starts at around $70,000, before a federal tax credit - remains a niche offering available to only the wealthiest 10 million U.S. households, at best, even with the help of Tesla's new financing deal.

"Have we read the final chapter on Tesla? No. But at this point, you get measured on what you've accomplished to date, and they've done a damn good job," said Tim Leuliette, president and CEO of auto parts supplier Visteon Corp , in an interview.

For Tesla to reach a broader market and silence electric car naysayers, the company must successfully deliver its Model X crossover next year as well as a third-generation car by 2017 that will cost between $30,000 and $35,000.

"One good car does not a car company make, unfortunately," said Tom Gage, the former CEO of AC Propulsion, which developed the drive train for Tesla's first model, the Roadster.

"They have to continue to grow by orders of magnitude before they become a real car company," he said.

COSTS THE SAME AS LUXURY GAS CARS

Tesla said it expects to deliver 21,000 Model S cars worldwide, up 5 percent from its earlier target of 20,000. Many investors had believed the 20,000 target was out of reach.

"My hat's off to them," Ford Motor Co Executive Chairman Bill Ford said at a press briefing after Ford's annual meeting in Wilmington. "It's really hard to start up a company, particularly in the auto business, and be successful."

The strength of demand for the Model S has surprised industry experts, investors and analysts. Limited driving ranges, high prices and relatively spartan interiors have hobbled demand made by other car makers like Nissan Motor Co Ltdand General Motors Corp.

Edmunds.com predicts electric cars will account for 0.1 percent of the U.S. market this year, 1.1 percent in 2017 and 2.3 percent by 2020.

"A lot of people just never believed that electric cars would ever happen or that it would ever be anything desirable," said Jefferies analyst Elaine Kwei, who has a "buy" rating on Tesla shares. "Most of them are not. I can't see why someone would want to pay double for a car because its electric."

But unlike its rivals, the Model S costs about the same as similarly-styled gas-powered luxury cars.

Russ Sands, 72, the retired chief executive of an insurance brokerage firm, said the vehicle is on par with the BMWs, Mercedes and Corvettes he has driven in the past.

"At times I feel like the smartest guy in the class as I drive along the freeway, looking at cars that cost more, that I've owned," Sands said.

"SHE COMPLETES ME"

Tesla is able to afford a more well-appointed interior than other electric cars partly because of its decision to use conventional lithium-ion battery cells, which are widely used in consumer devices.

These cells can cost less than $200 per kilowatt hour, a fraction of the large-format cells used by automakers like GM and Ford, which can deliver more power in a compact package.

The high cost of the battery, which can make up about half the cost of an electric car, remains a challenge in keeping vehicle prices low.

Consumer Reports gave the Model S a score of 99 out of 100, far ahead of electric and gas-powered rivals, including the Porsche Panamera sports car.

The magazine said the car "performed better or just as well overall as any other vehicle, of any kind, ever tested by CR."

The magazine said it achieved a range closer to 200 miles on the Model S, compared to 80 miles and 75 miles on the Ford Focus Electric and Nissan Leaf, respectively.

David Cowan, a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley who owns both a Model S and a Nissan Leaf, said he has driven from the San Francisco Bay Area to Sacramento and back - about a 200-mile trip - on a single charge. He has owned his Model S since late last year.

"I just don't have to think about range at all," Cowen said, adding that he could not do such a trip in his Nissan Leaf.

"She completes me," Cowan said of his Model S. "And I've never been a car person."

In the late 1950s, the Palm Beach socialite had time to spare and a wealthy husband who owned citrus groves, so she opened an orange juice stand just off the island's main shopping street. Pulitzer needed to hide all the juice stains on her clothes, though. Instead of just putting on an apron, she asked her seamstress to make some sleeveless dresses in colorful fruit prints, and a fashion staple was born.

Pulitzer died at her home Sunday, according to Quattlebaum Funeral and Cremation Services. She was 81.

Pulitzer's tropical print dresses became a sensation in the 1960s when then-first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who attended boarding school with Pulitzer, wore one of the sleeveless shifts in a Life magazine photo spread.

The colorful revolution came as fashion shed its reliance on neutrals, and Pulitzer's stuff was almost the housewife version of the more youthful mod look that was migrating from London.

To this day, the Lilly Pulitzer dress remains a popular, if not a necessary, addition to any woman's closet.

"I designed collections around whatever struck my fancy ... fruits, vegetables, politics, or peacocks! I entered in with no business sense. It was a total change of life for me, but it made people happy," Pulitzer, who married into the famous newspaper family, told The Associated Press in March 2009.

Pulitzer's dresses hung behind her juice stand and soon outsold her drinks. A boutique featuring the company's dresses developed with the help of partner Laura Robbins, a former fashion editor soon replaced the juice stand.

"Today we celebrate all that Lilly meant to us and come together as Lilly lovers to honor a true original who has brought together generations through her bright and happy mark on the world," James B. Bradbeer Jr. and Scott A. Beaumont, who bought the Lilly Pulitzer brand in 1992, said in a statement.

The signature Lilly palette features tongue-in-cheek jungle and floral prints in blues, pinks, light greens, yellow and orange the colors of a Florida vacation.

The line of dresses that bore her name was later expanded to swimsuits, country club attire, children's clothing, a home collection and a limited selection of menswear.

"Style isn't just about what you wear, it's about how you live," Pulitzer said in 2004.

"We focus on the best, fun and happy things, and people want that. Being happy never goes out of style," she said.

In 1966, The Washington Post reported that the dresses were "so popular that at the Southampton Lilly shop on Job's Lane they are proudly put in clear plastic bags tied gaily with ribbons so that all the world may see the Lilly of your choice. It's like carrying your own racing colors or flying a yacht flag for identification."

But changing taste brought trouble. Pulitzer closed her original company in the mid-1980s after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The label was revived about a decade later after being acquired by Pennsylvania-based Sugartown Worldwide Inc.; Pulitzer was only marginally involved in the new business but continued reviewing new prints from Florida.

"When Lilly started the business back in the '60s, she targeted a young customer because she was young," Bradbeer told the AP in 2003. "What we have done is target the daughter and granddaughter of that original customer."

Pulitzer herself retired from day-to-day operations in 1993, although she remained a consultant and a muse for the brand.

Sugartown Worldwide was bought by Atlanta-based Oxford Industries in 2010. Sales of the Lilly Pulitzer brand were strong in the earnings period that ended Feb. 2. The brand's revenue increased 26 percent to $29.1 million, according to Oxford Industries' earnings report. The company said last week it planned to add four to six new stores each year for its Lilly Pulitzer brand.

Pulitzer was born Lilly McKim on Nov. 10, 1931, to a wealthy family in Roslyn, N.Y.

In 1952, she married Pete Pulitzer, the grandson of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, whose bequest to Columbia University established the Pulitzer Prize.

Pulitzer had three children in quick succession. After the third was born, she had a nervous breakdown and ended up in a mental hospital that catered to upscale clientele in New York. A doctor there told her that she needed to find a job.

"The doctor there said, 'You're not happy because you're not doing anything,' and I said, 'I don't know how to do anything.' I'd always had everything done for me, always had my nanny and my mummy making up my mind. The doctor said, 'You've got to go out and find something to do,'" Pulitzer told The New Yorker in 2000.

Pulitzer gave the same prescription to her friends. If one of them needed something to do, Pulitzer would open a store in her town.

The Pulitzers divorced in 1969. Pulitzer's second husband, Enrique Rousseau, died in 1993.

"I don't know how to explain what it was like to run my business, the joy of every day," she told Vanity Fair magazine in a story in 2003. "I got a kick every time I went into the shipping department. ... I loved seeing (the dresses) going out the door. I loved them selling in the shop. I liked them on the body. Everything. There's no explaining the fun I had."

LONDON, April 23 (Reuters) - Wimbledon organisers moved to justify a staggering 40 percent rise in total prize money on Tuesday that will make the pot at this year's championships the biggest ever in tennis.

Players at this year's grasscourt grand slam, which starts on June 24, will receive a total of 22.6 million pounds ($34.45 million) with the men's and women's singles champions each pocketing 1.6 million pounds ($2.44 million).

Last year's Wimbledon singles champions earned 1.15 million pounds - 39 percent less.

"These are significant increases and we have made them because we wanted to and not because we had to," All England Club chairman Philip Brook told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday that also outlined a redevelopment of the site including putting a roof on Court One by 2019.

"We understand and appreciate the difficulties for all players reaching the top echelons of our sport. It's a long and expensive road to the top and it's getting longer."

Asked if the rises were justifiable during a harsh economic climate in which many people struggled just to afford tickets for the prestigious tournament, he said Wimbledon had to compete with other major sporting events.

"I know the economic climate is difficult, I accept that, but the world that we live in is a world where we are competing with other international tennis events and we also keep an eye on what is happening in other sports.

"We do think that this was a moment in time when we could respond to a subject that has been spoken about a lot over the last 18 months and we have chosen to make these increases this year because we feel it's the right thing to do.

"Fans won't pay the price (through ticket increases)," he added. "It's an affordable increase in terms of our overall operations here.

"We've had early discussion about 2014 ticket prices and there won't be any significant change to how we look at that."

Brook said there had been no pressure from the world's leading players but said the increases reflected calls for more prize money for the lesser-ranked players who are often packing their bags after the early rounds.

QUALIFYING ROUNDS

Players who lose in the opening three rounds at Wimbledon this year will be the chief beneficiaries of the prize money rises with increases of between 62 and 64 percent.

Those who fail to survive a single match in the main draw at the championships will be rewarded with a 23,000-pound cheque, up from 14,500 pounds last year.

"We started last year focusing the prize-money increases on those that lose in the early rounds or qualifying," Brook told Reuters. "These are not players who are superstars (but) players who are finding their way and not making a lot of money."

A women's singles player who bows out in the first round without winning a game will still be rewarded with a cheque that is close to the average annual earnings in the UK. With a 6-0 6-0 demolition usually lasting less than 45 minutes, Wimbledon officials were quick to defend their generosity.

Richard Lewis, chief executive of the All England Club, said the public should recognise that the riches enjoyed by the likes of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic through prize money and sponsorship were not available to rank and file tour players.

"It's not just the top players, we have to make the sport attractive to the next generation of talent and that means that players ranked 50 to 100 or 100 to 200 need to know that they can make a good living."

Even defeat in the qualifying rounds will be tempered by a 41 percent rise with 12,000 pounds going to players who fall at the last hurdle before the main draw.

Doubles players will also benefit form the increased prize money with the winning pair sharing 300,000 pounds as against 260,000 in 2012.

Outlining a new masterplan to upgrade he facilities at the All England Club, Brook said a roof over Court One, like the one installed over Centre Court in 2009, would help to maintain Wimbledon's place among the elite tournaments.

Designing a retractable roof on the 11,500-capacity court would be "complicated", however, Brook said.

"The design process will take two years and then, in view of the fact that the Centre Court roof took three years to construct, we are looking at 2019 for it to be working.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In a blow for Alzheimer's patients, Baxter International Inc said it will scrap late-stage trials of its antibody treatment for the disease after the drug failed to improve cognitive decline and functional ability in patients.

Baxter's treatment, known as Gammagard, did show a benefit in some patients with moderate disease and in those who are carriers of a gene known as ApoE4 that raises the risk of Alzheimer's. The company said it will continue to analyze results in these populations, but more trials would be needed to support the drug's approval.

An earlier study of the treatment released last summer showed the drug help stabilize the disease in four patients for at least three years, raising hope that the drug from Baxter International Inc will prove effective in larger trials. Most Alzheimer's patients typically decline over three to six months.

There are no licensed drugs that can slow the progression of Alzheimer's, and currently approved medications only treat symptoms.

Shares of Baxter fell 3.29 percent, or $3.32, to $67.99 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Gammagard was the only remaining drug in late-stage development for Alzheimer's, a brain-wasting disease that slowly robs patients of their ability to think and care for themselves.

After 18 months of treatment, patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease taking the drug failed to show a significant benefit on scales of cognitive decline and functional ability compared with those taking a placebo, missing the study's two main goals.

Dr. Norman Relkin of Weill Cornell Medical College, who led the study, said in a telephone interview that were "some significant findings" in another dementia screening test known as the modified mini-mental state in a subgroup of patients who were ApoE4 carriers.

"There were also trends of significance looking at patients with moderate versus mild disease," he said.

Relkin said the study reflects a "very different type of result" than seen in most other phase 3 trials of immunotherapies, including results of Eli Lilly & Co's treatment solanezumab and Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson's bapineuzumab, both of which seemed to show an effect in patients with mild disease.

However, none of the secondary endpoints in these groups showed a statistically significant difference. Relkin said the results are worth further study.

Based on the results, Baxter will reconsider its Alzheimer's program and will determine next steps after full data analyses, it said in a statement on Tuesday. The company said it is not changing its financial guidance for 2013.

"We are currently re-evaluating our approach," Ludwig Hantson, president of Baxter's bioscience business, said on a conference call. Hantson said the company will present full data from the study at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in July in Boston.

"While the headline is disappointing, we believe expectations were low, and this may prove a clearing event for the stock," said BMO analyst Joanne Wuensch in a note to investors.

Although there was no response to the drug at the lower 200 mg dose, Wuensch said the full results may show whether there was any response the higher, 400 mg dose.

Baxter said it was likely to make a decision about moving forward by year's end.

Gammagard is an intravenous immune system treatment made from natural antibodies taken from young, healthy blood donors. Known generically as intravenous immunoglobulin, or IVIG, the therapy is typically used to fight infections in patients with weakened immune systems.

In the trials, there were 17 serious adverse reactions considered to be treatment-related in the study, but Hantson said the study was generally well tolerated.

Not of Moss' two-run homer in the 19th inning that gave the Oakland Athletics a 10-8 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in a game that took 6 hours, 32 minutes and concluded at 1:41 a.m. PDT.

Nope, young Jayden Moss preferred to watch his father throwing a cream pie in his own face and made Brandon replay it 18 times.

"He's into all the baseball stuff but he didn't want to watch the home run," Moss said Tuesday. "He just wanted to watch the pie. That was his favorite."

Only a handful of the 11,688 fans remained when Moss hit his second home run of the night, ending the longest game by time in Oakland and the longest in Angels history.

A day later, both teams were still feeling the effects.

A's manager Bob Melvin had to scrap his normal postgame routine just to get home in time to catch a few hours of sleep before returning to the ballpark.

Before watching television with his son, Moss first had to explain to his wife and sister why he was so late. The two women, along with Moss' two children, had arrived in the players' parking lot at 9:45 p.m. Monday, ostensibly to pick up Moss. They spent the next 4 hours waiting as the innings piled up.

"She almost left in the 11th but then she thought, 'As soon as I drive away, they'll win,'" Moss said.

At least they got home before 3 a.m.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia had to meet with his staff until the wee hours of the morning trying to formulate a plan after losing leadoff hitter Peter Bourjos to a hamstring injury.

"You know how many moves we had to run through at 3 o'clock in the morning just trying to get an idea of what the needs of the team are going to be right now and what we need moving forward?" Scioscia said.

Moss had to pelt himself with the pie because Josh Reddick, who usually gets the honor after a game-ending hit by the A's, was initially too tired.

Reddick did come back with a second pie, and Josh Donaldson emptied a water jug on Moss' head.

Angels catcher Chris Iannetta probably deserved something, too. He played the entire game and became the first AL player since 2006 to catch more than 18 innings in a game.

Iannetta was not in Los Angeles' starting lineup Tuesday night.

"There's no doubt Chris feels it today," Scioscia said. "There's no doubt everybody's feeling some things a bit more. When you have something that you're dealing with, standing out there for 18 innings, like cold weather, is going to bring it out."

Angels closer Ernesto Frieri, who gave up a tying hit to Yoenis Cespedes with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, said the A's didn't deserve to win.

Los Angeles had a 7-2 lead in the eighth but let it slip away on a night when Albert Pujols homered twice and drove in four runs. Mark Trumbo also homered and knocked in three.

The Angels lost more than just the game Monday night.

Bourjos was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. The center fielder was hitting .313 before getting hurt legging out a sacrifice attempt in the 11th inning.

The injury to Bourjos was somewhat offset by the return of shortstop Erick Aybar, who was activated from the disabled list before Tuesday's game. The Angels also selected the contract of outfielder Scott Cousins from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Oakland also had to scramble for help after using eight pitchers.

Dan Straily, who threw the first 4 2-3 innings of the marathon game, was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento and right-hander Evan Scribner was called up.

"I don't think either team's particularly fresh," Melvin said. "We'll be a little bit limited, as will they."
