Froome and the other main contenders were more than seven minutes back when Trentin crossed the finish line in Lyon to become the first Italian to win a stage this year.

Froome managed not to lose any more time to his main rival Alberto Contador ahead of Sunday's daunting 21-kilometer (13-mile) ascent of Mont Ventoux - one of cycling's toughest climbs, where Britain's Tom Simpson collapsed and died during the 1967 Tour.

''I'm concentrating on the GC (overall classification), but of course it would be great to win tomorrow,'' Froome said. ''In cycling terms it would be like a dream come true.''

Froome, the Tour favorite, lost more than a minute to Contador, the two-time former champion, and Dutchman Bauke Mollema in Friday's incident-packed sprint stage.

This time, he thanked his teammates for keeping him out of danger on the 191-kilometer (119-mile) leg from the winemaking town of Saint-Pourcain-sur-Sioule in central France to the east-central city of Lyon, one of the gourmet capitals of France and home to the seven-time French football champion.

''My teammates controlled the stage and did a great job,'' Froome said. ''Just keeping an eye on things.''

Froome remains 2:28 ahead of Mollema, considered an outsider, and 2:45 clear of Contador, the 2007 and '09 champion who was stripped of his 2010 title for doping.

''A lot of people have reason to attack now,'' Froome said. ''A lot of people spent energy in the last couple of days, so it will be an interesting one.''

Meanwhile, Trentin was overjoyed with his first stage win in a major race.

''I knew that if I started from 200 meters I could win,'' he said. ''For sure a win in the Tour, this means something. I want to enjoy this because the next days are going to be hard.''

As they contested the sprint outside Stade Gerland football stadium, Trentin surged from the back to beat Swiss rider Michael Albasini by half a wheel. American Andrew Talansky was third.

It was the second straight stage win - and third in the last four - for the Omega Pharma QuickStep team after Mark Cavendish won on Friday and Tony Martin clinched Wednesday's time trial.

''To be part of this team is incredible,'' Trentin said. ''When I won the stage all my teammates came to say 'Congratulations.'''

The first three were followed 7 minutes, 17 seconds later by the heaving mass of riders in the peloton, with Froome's Sky and Alberto Contador's Saxo-Tinkoff teams forming a shield around their star riders.

An 18-man breakaway set off early, with Jens Voigt, Jan Bakelants and British rider David Millar driving it hard to get Garmin-Sharp teammate Talansky - the group's highest-placed rider in the general classification - in a good position.

Voigt's first Tour was in 1998 and Saturday's was his 303rd day of racing in the showcase race in his 16th Tour.

''To be honest, five years too many,'' Voigt said when asked why he couldn't last. ''I'm 41, that's nature.''

The yellow jersey group was about five minutes behind when the front-runners had all completed the second category 3 climb. Those two were the biggest ones of the day but only moderate ascents compared to what awaits the riders on Sunday.

Millar calls the Ventoux climb ''horrible'' and Polish rider Michal Kwiatkowski is dreading it.

''It's such a legendary mountain that I'm a little bit scared about it,'' said Kwiatkowski, seventh overall but nearly five minutes behind Froome.

Sunday is Bastille Day. Judging by the thousands of people who turned out on the roadside to cheer on Saturday, the atmosphere up Ventoux promises to be electric.

Froome's Sky teammates have clearly struggled in two stages so far - in the Pyrenees in stage 9 and Friday's flat stage - and he needs them to be at their best to repel any attacks from Contador so he can relax on Monday's rest day - the second of the race.

''My focus is going to be on keeping yellow, preserving the advantage I have,'' Froome said.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - When the western television series "The Lone Ranger" first rode into U.S. homes in 1949, the masked man was the dashing, charming hero and the Native American Tonto his loyal sidekick.

When the movie opens in U.S. theaters on Wednesday, it will be Tonto who takes center stage. Played by Johnny Depp with the same offbeat charm as his Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, Tonto is the brains of the operation.

In an opening sequence - a breakneck fight scene on a runaway train - Tonto directs an escape from outlaws while a mask-less Lone Ranger, played by Armie Hammer, is the naive one, unsure at the outset that he was even in danger.

"It's a story we've all heard, but we've never heard it from the guy who was there," the film's director Gore Verbinski, 49, told Reuters.

For the new incarnation, Verbinski wanted to update the story by making Tonto more relevant than just a sidekick. Once the idea was hatched to make him the narrator, "it opened a lot of doors" in terms of storytelling, he said.

Through Tonto's eyes, audiences get an origin tale of how former lawman John Reid, the Lone Ranger, came to fight injustice in the Old West.

"This is not history told from your radio station, your movie studio or your network," Verbinski said. "It's told from Tonto and his memory - and his memory may be questionable."

To make Tonto's point of view authentic, a Native American consultant was used on the set, Verbinski said, adding that they also spoke with various tribes to get certain details correct.

No one embraced the Tonto-centric viewpoint more than Depp, who was told from an early age that he was part Native American.

Since production on the Disney film has wrapped, the actor has gone on to strengthen his ties to the community. Last year, Depp was named honorary member of the Comanche Nation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and he also served as grand marshal at the Comanche Nation Fair in Oklahoma.

CORE ELEMENTS UNTOUCHED

At Depp's request, proceeds from the film's $1,000-per-ticket gala premiere last week at Southern California's Disneyland resort last week supported the American Indian College Fund.

Fans of the "The Lone Ranger" series, which first appeared on radio in 1933, can be assured that its core elements remain. Audiences will see a man in a white hat and mask who believes in justice, a horse named Silver and the trademark silver bullets.

Its famous theme, Rossini's "William Tell" overture, makes its way in to the film and Tonto continues to affectionately refer to the Lone Ranger as "kemo sabe."

The remake boasts the same team, including Depp, Verbinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who brought Disney the mega-blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

The four "Pirates" films have earned some $3.7 billion in total at the global box office, according to Boxofficemojo.com.

Although there are hopes "The Lone Ranger" team can repeat past box office success, there was nothing cheap about its costs, which a person familiar with the production said was budgeted at $225 million. Other reports have pegged it closer to $250 million.

An entire Old West town was built in which to shoot the film, along with a 200-foot long train tunnel, two 250-ton trains and miles of track.

Building such ambitious sets was necessary to achieve the right "feel" for the film's biggest action scenes, Verbinski said, adding that he did not want to use cheaper computer-generated imagery or miniatures for such sequences.

"The movie is an epic tale and I didn't want it to feel overly lush and too pretty," he said. "We all know what trains and horses look like, so I wanted to shoot trains and horses and do it the old-fashioned way."

Hamamou and some of her fellow journalists held demonstrations, issued petitions and pressed editors for the paper to break from state dictates and adopt independent, objective coverage.

Change never came. First, the military rulers who took over after Mubarak tightly controlled the paper. Once Mohammed Morsi became president, his Muslim Brotherhood stepped in and pushed coverage their direction.

"What happened was they just put in their people in Al-Ahram and other state institutions, and nobody tried to reform the institutions themselves," Hamamou said. "The saying goes if you are confused about who is ruling Egypt, just look at the headlines of Al-Ahram."

Now Hamamou is dismayed to see the paper and other state media unquestionably embracing the military after its coup that ousted Morsi on July 3, following protests by millions around the country demanding his removal.

It's not only state media. Independent TV stations and newspapers have also enthusiastically backed the military and its crackdown on the Brotherhood, which included shutting down four Islamist TV stations. Their full-throated support reflects how convinced they became over Morsi's year that the Brotherhood were fundamentally anti-democratic and intertwined with violent extremists.

Independent stations thrived after Mubarak's fall, usually touting their advocacy for democratic principles. Many, including several owned by wealthy opponents of the Islamists, were deeply critical of Morsi. They raised the alarm over signs of the Brotherhood monopolizing power, infringements of press freedoms and civil liberties, violent hate speech from his hard-line allies and over the killing of protesters by police under his administration.

But in recent days, they have been uncritical of acts by the military.

After more than 50 pro-Morsi protesters were shot to death by security forces in clashes Monday, a star announcer on independent CBC TV, Lamis Hadidi once a spokeswoman for Mubarak's 2005 re-election campaign cautioned viewers not to think of the dead as "martyrs."

Instead, she blamed the Islamists for "a new Brotherhood massacre."

Egypt's media landscape has long been sharply partisan. The Brotherhood's TV station and others run by their ultraconservative Islamist allies now off the air were whole-heartedly in Morsi's camp. During the past weeks, the Brotherhood's party has posted pictures of children killed in Syria's civil war, presenting them as Egyptian Brotherhood dead.

Al-Jazeera TV, owned by Brotherhood ally Qatar, also was accused of strongly pro-Morsi coverage. Since protests against him began, the station has covered mass rallies in his support more extensively than those against him the mirror image of some anti-Morsi stations' coverage. Six staffers quit accusing it of bias.

"At the end of the day, as much as journalism is supposed to be about a lack of bias, the opinion journalism model has taken over the media," said Mahmoud Salem, an Egyptian writer and political analyst and sharp critic of the Brotherhood.

"Everyone wants to be a cheerleader for his or her team."

Now that has turned into lashing out at the other team as well.

During a military press conference Monday, a journalist from the state news agency stood up and demanded Al-Jazeera reporters be excluded. The station's reporters walked out to chants of "Out! Out!" from others in the crowd. They also applauded repeatedly in reaction to the military spokesman's statements.

Earlier, security forces raided the offices of the local Al-Jazeera affiliate, detaining its staff briefly and holding its manager and chief engineer for several days. On Friday, Al-Jazeera reported that a correspondent and a three-member camera team were detained by the military while filming in the city of Suez and were being questioned.

A senior police official late last week also ordered The Associated Press to stop providing the station live television footage from Tahrir Square. The AP dispatched two executives to Cairo to protest the suppression. After a series of meetings with senior government officials, who stressed the shutdown was not official government policy, the AP live video service to Al-Jazeera was restored Wednesday.

In a statement, Al-Jazeera said it was being targeted by a "crackdown on information" and denied bias.

"We've always given all sides of opinion airtime on Al-Jazeera, it's our mantra," it said. "Large sections of the Egyptian media object to this open-minded ethos."

Atlanta-based CNN has also come under criticism and its journalists have been harassed because many in the anti-Morsi camp accused it of a pro-Brotherhood bias after it called his ouster a coup. Protesters have carried signs against the network in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

"What specifically brought attention to CNN is that we called this a coup early on," said Tony Maddox, director of CNN International. "Some people don't want it described as that, but I'm afraid that is what it is and we will call it as we see it."

Lina Atallah, editor-in-chief of a new online news site Mada Masr, said there was increased pressure on journalists to toe the line. She pointed to coverage of the protester killings on Monday, which repeated the military's version of the violence with few independent witness accounts.

"What's scary about this time around in the media performance is that there is much more agenda-setting from above," she said.

Media emphasizing independent reporting struggle for funding in a landscape dominated by outlets owned by the state or by well-funded movements like the Islamists or by businessmen with an agenda.

Mada Masr is one attempt to create such an outlet, founded by a group of young journalists.

Publisher Hisham Kassem is attempting another, with his plans for a new independent daily, Al-Gomhouriya Al-Gadida, or the New Republic. He told AP he has to fend off offers from old regime sympathizers on one hand and Brotherhood members on the other to buy it up and use it as a platform for their views.

During Mubarak's last years in power, Kassem helmed Al-Masry Al-Youm, one of the first independent papers that avoided the sycophancy of the state press and the unreliable shrillness of opposition party newspapers.

In state media like Al-Ahram, the ruler of the day stocked the paper with loyalists to keep it in line. Under Mubarak, Al-Ahram's chief was a close associate of the president. State security often weighed in on its and state TV's coverage. Al-Ahram's newsroom was notorious for nepotism and favoritism and was influenced by the interests of the sprawling Al-Ahram conglomerate, which includes a large advertising agency.

Hamamou, a 20-year veteran at Al-Ahram and a reporter for the economic section, says she has been appalled by the unprofessionalism.

"There are no lines between editorial and advertising pages," the 38-year-old said. "According to the documents we got after the revolution, many journalists got commissions (to write pieces) from the advertising department it's against journalism ethics."

With Morsi's inauguration and a freely elected president in place, many in the staff expected reform. They were disappointed when the Brotherhood appointed a new chief editor they said had little experience, who turned coverage in the Islamists' favor.

Younger journalists staged a sit-in, complete with a tent, in the paper's lobby and demanded his removal.

The new editor, Abdel-Nasser Salama, fired some reformists appointed since Mubarak's fall and brought back editors who had been pushed into retirement.

Still, the Brotherhood was less successful than the military in dominating the state media. There were flashes of resistance. In one case, a presenter on state TV ended his newscast by sarcastically thanking the presidency for providing the material. Another pulled out a shroud on air and pronounced she was ready to die rather than obey Brotherhood directives.

With the military now in charge, these qualms have disappeared and state media resumed lockstep support for those in charge.

Al-Ahram editors saw the direction the wind was blowing even before Morsi's exit. On July 1, the day after the first massive rallies against the president, the paper's front-page blared, "Morsi: Quit or Be Forced to Quit."

Hammamo and other staffers saw that as a sure sign that the military, about to make its move, had told the paper's management to fall in line.

"The editor-in-chief wouldn't have put this if he didn't have direct information," she said.

"It is human nature," she said. "They will be with whoever is the winner."

The German magazine Der Spiegel, citing secret documents, reported last Saturday that the United States had bugged European Union offices in Brussels and gained access to EU internal computer networks.

Der Spiegel quoted from a September 2010 "top secret" U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) document that it said fugitive former NSA contractor Edward Snowden had taken with him.

The magazine mentioned a NATO link, reporting that more than five years ago security officers at the EU had noticed several missed calls and traced them to NSA offices within the NATO compound in Brussels.

Questioned about the Spiegel report at a news conference, Rasmussen said he had no information about possible NSA facilities within the U.S. representation at NATO.

"NATO is not involved in this. I don't consider it a NATO problem. I have no reason to believe that NATO security has been compromised in any way," he said.

The United States and other NATO members have offices at the sprawling NATO headquarters complex in Brussels.

Rasmussen said he had not asked the U.S. government about the spying reports. "I am very much focused on strengthening the transatlantic relationship," he said.

The incident was unrelated to a fire aboard another Dreamliner operated by Ethiopian Airlines while it was on the ground at Britain's Heathrow Airport.

"Thomson Airways can confirm that flight TOM126 travelling from Manchester to Sanford, Florida, experienced a technical issue and the aircraft returned to Manchester Airport, as a precautionary measure," Thomson Airways, owned by TUI Travel, said in a statement.

TUI Travel said its passengers had disembarked and that its engineers were inspecting the aircraft in Manchester, northwest England. It added that the passengers would be moved to an alternative aircraft as soon as possible.

Thomson Airways, the first British carrier to use the Dreamliner, operated its first commerical flight using the lightweight, fuel-efficient jet on a special flight from London's Gatwick to Minorca in Spain last month.

TUI Travel, whose airlines use 141 aircraft, received the first of its 13 Dreamliners in late May. It is using the new plane on services between Manchester, East Midlands, Glasgow and Gatwick airports to Florida in the United States and Cancun in Mexico.

Thomson had planned to start using the Dreamliner in May but was forced to push its timetable back after the plane's battery problems delayed its delivery.

IAG's British Airways took delivery of the first of its 24 Dreamliners late last month. Virgin Atlantic is due to get the first of its 16 Dreamliners in September next year.

In areleased this week, a majority of respondents 55 percent say Snowden, the computer analyst who leaked top-secret National Security Agency documents, is a whistle-blower. Just 34 percent sided with numerous members of Congress calling Snowdens actions treasonous.

The poll also shows a marked shift in the public's view on civil liberties and national security. A plurality of respondents45 percentsay the governments anti-terrorism policies go too far in restricting civil liberties, while 40 percent say they do not. In January 2010, the same poll showed that only 25 percent said these policies go too far.

But the poll also suggests many Americans remain highly conflicted on matters of national security. While 51 percent of respondents support the NSAs collection of phone data, 54 percent say the program is too much intrusion into Americans personal privacy.

Domingo, 72, was hospitalized on Monday in his hometown and is expected to make a full recovery in about three to four weeks, publicist Nancy Seltzer said. "He's doing very well and responding very well to treatment," she said.

Domingo, who also serves as the general director of the Los Angeles Opera, has been forced to cancel five performances due later in July in the opera Il Postino at the Madrid Royal Theatre, a statement from the theatre said.

It said his hospitalization will also prevent him from conducting an orchestral performance in Madrid's Plaza Major planned for July 21.

But the seller of Polo and other brands saw its stock fall Thursday because its revenue fell below Wall Street expectations amid poor weather, economic challenges in the U.S. and abroad and the move to eliminate some businesses to focus on the most profitable ones.

The results, announced Thursday, show how the New York based luxury company is seeing increasing profits since the first half of its fiscal year, when cotton costs soared and the company was bearing the brunt of the costs of eliminating certain businesses such as its Rugby brand. But it's still navigating the rough patches of a choppy global economy.

"Our better-than-expected profitability in the fourth quarter and full year fiscal 2013 periods is a direct result of the strong operational management of our global teams," Roger Farah, president and chief operating officer, said in a statement. "Enhanced profit flow-through was achieved despite sustained macroeconomic challenges and strategic decisions that mitigated revenue growth during the year."

The New York-based company reported net income of $127.2 million, or $1.37 per share, for the three months that ended March 30. That compares with $94.4 million, or 99 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose a slim 1.2 percent to $1.64 billion. Excluding the impact of strategies to eliminate some businesses as well as the effects from unfavorable foreign currency translation, revenue increased 5 percent.

Analysts had expected earnings of $1.31 per share on revenue of $1.7 billion.

Ralph Lauren said that its wholesale segment's sales slipped 4 percent to $796 million compared with the year-ago period. That was primarily due to the discontinuation of the American Living brand, sold at J.C. Penney stores, and a planned reduction in shipments to certain European customers.

Sales at its own Ralph Lauren stores rose 7 percent to $804 million from $752 million a year earlier.

The company expects sales to improve. The company projects revenue to rise by a low single-digit percentage for the current quarter and anywhere from 4 percent to 7 percent for the full year.

The company ended the quarter with 388 directly operated stores 116 Ralph Lauren stores, 50 Club Monaco stores and 213 Polo factory stores. The company also operated 494 concession shop locations worldwide at the end of the quarter. In addition to company-operated locations, international licensing partners operated 62 Ralph Lauren stores and 32 dedicated shops as well as 64 Club Monaco stores and shops at the end of the fourth quarter.

Shares fell 2.3 percent, or $4.37 per share, to close at $183.69 Thursday.
