Hotel Mumbai / Movie

★★★★☆

So thrilling and moving.

The main actor is Dev Patel whose movies are all popular. Good actor. And it is directed by the staff made “Border” which is also the movie I recommend.

The story is based on a real story in India in 2008.

One day, terrorism happened in the station, 5 star accommodation “ hotel Mumbai” and another popular places in India, which resulted in more than 100 people were slaughtered. This movie depicted how the brave hotel men saved guest although it could cause more death without their courageous behavior. I don’t know how many times I forgot to breath…

I would not do the same thing if I was in the same situation. I would run away… Maybe it is a natural emotion for all human being, isn’t it?

So the question is ….what things could move people to do like those kinds of brave behavior? It is easy to say “ they are just brave” but I wanna know their mindset psychologically.

I searched….and I found one interesting study.

This research studied 19 adults who donated kidney to strangers. It showed that they have less psychopathic traits(callousness , manipulativeness, and lack of guilt or remorse) and this brain showed larger amygdala which related to recognizing “fear” feeling. It seems that feeling fear prevent helping others, but the opposite is also true that sensitivity to fear enables them to emphasize with other’s distress and moves them to help when help is needed. This study placed altruistic people completely opposite to Psychopathic person.

I do not understand what this research wanted to say. Did they want to suggest that being altruistic is inherent ?

At least it can be said that people having less psychopathic traits could do much more courageous behavior of helping others if m danger cases happen.

From the classic psychological study, Helping behavior is defined as empathy, social exchange theory and by stander effect. It can explain this movie to some extent.

For example, bystander effect could not occur in that situation because there are only hotel men who can help guest. And as to social exchange theory, it means that helping behavior could be promoted in a case of benefit over cost. This is not true of this movie because helping others at risk of being killed seems cost over benefit. However, recently it has been studied as view point of remorse or guilt, which could related to helping behavior. It means that not helping others could bring a feeling of guilt which leads to altruistic behavior. It does make sense that being hotelmen in 5 star accommodation could cause responsibility and guilt to help them.

Anyway, Their brave behavior saved many lives and that should be acclaimed so much.

Lou who is a caretaker for him has tried to change his mind for six months but she cannot finally. She loves him.

By reading this , I'm thinking about death especially about how to end our lives.

If I were him, what would I do? .......I might do the same thing honestly.

However, If my family or important person to me asked to do this, I do not have confidence in agreening willingly. That is a different story. There seems to be difficulty in it; Whose is the right of death? Is it only individual right or include surrounding people such as family?

Don't get me wrong, in my opinion, it seems individual right.

We can choose how we live and so we can choose how we die. However, with the assumption, life is invaluable and so it should be the last option.

One athlete, Vervoort, who won gold medals in Olympics decided to euthanasia as well. She had struggled from constant pain in legs and it couldn't be cured for lifetime. She said that euthanasia is a only hope to live. While she felt unbearble pain, she managed to find hope such as winning medals in Olypics and traveling to Japan. She came true her dreams and decided to end her life with euthanasia in the end. She also said that she would kill herself if there was no option of euthanasia. No one cannot blame her. I truly respect how she lives. This means that the euthanasia can be a hope for spending prosperous lives for some people.

But why do I feel a bit of scary for legalizing euthanasia in Japan. What are behind this feeling ?

She feels guilty for her happy daily life.

At the end of this story, she realized that it is ok to live happily and also feel pain for others’ struggles. We can hold both emotion and we do not have to feel guilty.

This book reminds me of the difference between empathy and sympathy. Empathy is to just imagine like putting myself in others shoes. There is no need in feeling the same pain. Just imagine and understand the situation they are put in. But, sympathy is to feel the same emotion. It seems good but there is a hole. There is a possibility that people avoid thinking those problems because thinking coincides with feeling pain. I think, having empathy is so important in understanding and tackling the current problem like immigrants. First step is to know the difference between sympathy and empathy and then control it.

This photo’s theme is a sexuality. He tries to take photos about ambiguity of binary gender. I’m interested in gender and so attracted him.

However, the main theme is about “daily photos” in this gallery. He continues to take photos everyday for almost 20 years, and there is no theme. He just shot the photo whenever he wants to.

When I saw his photos, I was drawn into nostalgic world although the town sceneries were not familiar town to me. But I felt nostalgic and reminded me warm memories. It’s like turning the album. Actually those scenery are things we can see everywhere, no special things such as town lights, old taxi, office workers, and building. But that attracts me. How nostalgic in taking the photo of those.

Sometimes this feelings happen when I walk through the town while listing to the music and also I have a space in my mind. Like, suddenly the scenes surrounded me start fading in color and I start feeling that this view in front of me is something precious. This is resulted by the music effect but the same thing might happen by photos as well.

That’s all my impression, it’s an immature impression though.

There are some photos I really liked.

Art gallery is a good place in communicating me inside of my heart😚

predicably irrational/BOOK

予想通りに不合理 is a Japanese title. It attracted me because I couldn’t guess the details from this title.

It is about human decisions especially in markets.

He performed experiments inspired by his daily life. That is why this book is interesting. For example, he was wondering why people brought foods easily in the fridge than money although both are the same from the perspective that they brought someone’s things. Something like that. It is difficult to explain…..I recommend to read it.

The experiment I was intrigued was the experiment of “being untrust”. To be short, he concluded that people would cheat someone if there is a chance and get a benefit by doing this. But if they are reminded of kinds of ethics, the number of people who cheat dramatically decreases. For example, if students write Moses' Ten Commandments before tests, they are less likely to lie about the number of correct answers( they are supposed to receive the reward:money according to the number of correctanswers).

Actually, I tend to break the small rules of there is no one… So, now I’m trying to get rid of this bad habit. It seems ok to be conscious of the ethics. It is easy right?

But I think this way is limited to people working super ego. Because, if it’s not working, it is worthless in being conscious of ethics. There is no ethnic in their mind. This means that if the person don’t have matured superego because of lack of parents supervise, the first thing is to teach the ethics byitself. Sometimes juveniles committed the crime because of this reason.

I need to study vocabulary more.

The story is good.

It could be possible in the future like AI has the amazingobservation. Kurala can observe human emotions by watching their face, what they said, and their behavior carefully. She can understand almost every complex emotions in the end and actually, her comprehension skill is sometimes more than humans do. That is why she is asked to “become” the daughter by her mother cuz her daughter is about to die because of a “lifted girl”( maybe gene manipulation). In fact, Kurama can imitate her sayings and her behaviors, being as same qualities as this daughter. However, there is a big difference she realized lastly, which is there inside of other persons ( like family and boy friend) surrounded the daughter, not Kulara’s skill.

I’m amazed and impressed. That’s true. If AI could do what human does almost the same, it’s not the human cuz it is quite different in how we see it. I mean, there arelots of history and memory in human relationships where we have communicated with him/her over the long period and she or he has also changed by this relationships. That made the memories and “special bond” inside of them. These things created the feeling toward loving someone inside of them. That is different and this could not be done by robots because that is environmental factors which could not be changed by AI. I think that is why psychologists or human service workers cannot be replaced by AI.

This book is a fiction story but made me thinking about: what is a human, and why cannot it be complemented by robots? .

They had same hobbies which were something “niche”, and they spent their time together almost everyday. It is very heartwarming.

But as time went by, the gap became bigger between them because the boyfriend, Mugi, decided to work in the company to live stable and standard life although he lived by writing illustrations until that time. That’s the start point when their hearts start to be apart. He became not interested in the books and movies they used to spend on together and finally said “Have you thought about marriage lately?” because of living to be standard, not from his heart. His girlfriend cried.

It makes me think that what is to live to be standard. Work in company is good to live being standard because we can get stable money and we cannot live without money. However, we should keep in mind that it could make us insensible for what we really feel and like, and who we want to spend with. I felt really sad about the change of Mugi after working where he became insensible for her feeling because he was insensible for his feelings as well. It is very distinctive that he said “Recently I’ve not felt fun in reading good books or watching good movies. Those things have not made me moving any more. I feel fun only when I’m playing PazzDra”. I think that the same thing could occur to a lot of people now. We just satisfied ourselves by not thinking. It is quite different in thinking when we read books and watching movies. We stop thinking for fun because there are many stuff we “should” think in working and that filled our mind. There is no space to do that.

Love is difficult. It needs space where we feel truly and emotionally.

However,

he met one teacher and she supported him so much from the bottom of her heart. It was the best part of this movie that her love melt his frozen heart, not everything went well though. As he changed, his father’s mind was changing gradually towards supporting his dream.

Billy acting is amazing. His facial expression tells many emotions he is feeling; mixed feeling.

I really recommend it to people who wanna cry by watching movie.
