朝早く渥美半島から出発し、 フェリーに向かいました。何も時間を調べずに行ったら、フェリーが出発する３０分前に着いて、切符を買って、早速バイクをフェリーに載せました。この旅の初フェリーとなりますが、これから何度も乗船する予定です。

I left the Atsumi Peninsula early in the morning, and headed for the ferry. I didn’t look up the ferry times, but I somehow arrived perfectly 30 minutes before take off, just enough time to buy a ticket, and get my motorcycle loaded on the boat. While this is my first ferry ride this trip, it will not be my last.

思い出の三重県（前職の工場が三重県の四日市にあり、研修で1ヶ月半滞在したことがあります）に到着し、早速南に向かいました。三重県海沿いの景色を一度でも見たく、三重県のうにゃうにゃしている海岸沿いを走り、最高なツーリング道を開拓しました、260号線は45キロ程度の道で、信号は一つか二つのみ、GWなのに、車も全くありませんでした。自分と道と最高な景色でした。一言でまとめると、ドライブ日和でした。

I arrived at Mie Prefecture and headed south. Mie Prefecture has a rather special place in my heart. After joining my previous company, I spent a month and a half doing new employee onboarding training at the factory. Mie prefecture has a very interesting ocean scape. A series of inlets that stretch on in a snake like fashion for miles and miles. The road that ran parallel to this also happened to be amazing for touring. Road 260, stretched on for about 45 km with only one or two stop lights. It was as if the road myself and the amazing scenery acted as one. It was really the perfect drive.

ツーリングがこれで楽しくできたため、観光も少しすることにしました。まずは、穴場スポットです。深い谷の底、子連れ家族が優雅に遊んでいる美しい川のそばに、種まき権兵衛の里という入場無料の庭園がありました。山から自然に落ちてくる水を利用し、滝や池等を造り、新緑の中、真っ赤な紅葉が混ざり合い、大変おすすめの場所です。

Now that I had a good motorcycle ride, it was time to do a bit of sightseeing. First off, I went to a lesser known park. It was nestled in the basin of a deep valley, near a stream where families and their children played. Tanemakigonbe-no-sato, a wonderful garden, that was free of chage. The garden masterfully crafted a naturally falling waterfall into a beautiful pond. The amazing thing was, that even though it was the beginning of May, there was the most deepest red leaves on some of the trees in the park. Their red color juxtaposed over the luscious green of the park really makes this one of my favorite gardens I’ve been to in Japan.

その次は、三重県から和歌山県の最南端に向かって、所々止まりました。まずは、鬼ケ城にとまりました。崖に沿った一キロもの道が創られており、快晴の日には最高なハイキングコースでした。そのすぐ近くの海岸にも、鯉の旗が沢山並んでいて、風で吹き垂れ、長い海岸の良いアクセントになりました。

After the park, I headed for the most southern part of Wakayama Prefecture. I stopped at a few places along the way, including Onigajo (devil’s rock), which consists of a pathway built into the side of a cliff face overlooking the ocean. It stretches on for about a kilometer on the coastline. It’s a wonderful hiking course. The next beach after Onigajo, I saw a long line of Japanese Koi flags flailing in the wind, which perfectly accented  the long curvature of the Japanese coastline.

また、三重県及び和歌山県は熊野古道で知られており、その一部となる熊野速玉大社に立ち寄り、まあ、綺麗な神社でした。この時点で影が少しずつ伸びてきて、日が落ち始めました。まだ、当日の目的地である熊野那智大社は40分先でした。頑張って、何とか5時過ぎに到着しました。

Mie and Wakayama prefecture are known for the Kumano Kodo (an ancient trail which connected many temples). I decided to stop at Hayatama Taisha, which is a part of the Kumano Kodo Temple chain. It was a small but beautiful temple. At this point, the shadows were starting to get a bit longer, and the sun was starting it’s descent. I still had another 40 minutes to my main goal of Kumano Nachi Taisha. I picked up the pace, and get there a little after 5pm.  

熊野那智大社は那智市から20分山奥でしたので、着くには少し時間がかかりますが、逃せないパワースポットです。山奥にまず、落差133mもある那智の滝があり、その底で健康を祈り、その滝からの自然な水を飲みます。滝から更に山を登り、神社そのものにたどり着きました。5時過ぎでしたので、お土産売り場や飯処は全部閉まっていて、観光客も帰る流れとなっていました。山上の神社を一人で巡り、その静けさを浴び、その場所に深いパワーを感じました。

Kumano Nachi Taisha is located about 20 minutes up the mountain from the city of Nachi. It takes a bit to get there, but it’s a temple complex you should not pass up. First off, the temple is graced with a over 133m waterfall, which pears over the top of the mountain. At the base of that waterfall there is a place where you drink the spring water symbolizing a prayer to good health. A bit further up the mountain is a massive temple complex. Since I got there a little after 5pm, all of the stores and souvenir shops were closed and most of the tourists had gone home for the day. I had the whole place to myself, taking in the serenity of the location, I felt that I understood why you would make a temple here.

那智市はマグロで有名で、夕飯は町中のまぐろ三味那智というレストランでマグロ尽くし定食を頂きました。店員さんの対応も非常に丁寧の上、マグロかつ、マグロ刺身等は非常に美味しかったです。おすすめです。

The nearby city of Nachi is famous for bluefin tuna. I went to a local eatery, Maguro Aji Nachi, and had their Maguro Deluxe special. The employee’s were very polite, and the Tuna Cutlet and Sashimi were delicious to boot.

暗くなってから、太地という隣の町のAirbnbに向かいました。太地は鯨料理で有名です。太地の港にある、直販売所が夜8時まで空いていて、残っていた鯨のおかずを少し買ってみて、翌日の朝ごはんで挑戦することしました。

After it got dark, I headed towards next town over, Taiji where I had reserved a Airbnb. Taiji is famous for whale. The fishing association runs a supermarket near the port, and it was open until 8pm, so I stopped by to see what if any whale they sold. Ended picking up three different kinds of whale products, and decided to try them for breakfast the next day.

Airbnbにつき、ワンちゃん3匹のワンで歓迎されました。超かわいい超フレンドリーなちわわでした。太地にずっと暮らしているおばさんが週末でこの一年前から運営している民泊でした。ビールや軽食で歓迎され、翌日の旅計画に大切なローカル情報をたくさん与えてくれました。ヘルシーな朝ごはんもしっかり作ってくれ、非常に丁寧な方でした。週末に太地にたちよることがあれば、宿泊をお勧めします。

I was greeted by the woofs of three little cute chiwawa puppies when I arrived at the Airbnb. The Airbnb was run by lady who had lived in Tiaji her whole life, and had started hosting guests just the year before. She greeted me with beer and some mixed nuts, and helped me to plan my next days travel. She made a delicious and healthy breakfast for me in the morning, and was very hospitable. If you ever stop at Taiji on the weekends, I recommend looking up her Airbnb.

※朝ごはんにその前夜に買った鯨３種類を食べてみましたが、醤油、生姜、酢味噌をかけても、まずくてしょうがないです。犬すら食べてくれなかったです。ごんどうのテッパ（ごんどうというのが太地の人にとっては鯨という意味だそうです）だけはマシでした。強い酒と一緒ならいけるやつですね。

Side Note: I attempted to eat the three whale dishes I bought for breakfast. I used soy sauce, ginger and vinegar miso to no avail. They were not good, hell, even the dogs turned their noses in disgust. The only one I could kind of eat was the Teppa, which I am not really sure what it was.

I left Kawazu at around 9 in the morning. On the way out of Kawazu, towards Mount Amagi (which there is a famous song written about), there is a spot in which your breath melts away with the air around you.  Nestled high on the valley wall encompassed by mountains a massive spiraling construct pierces the sky as if trying to reach the heavens. The Kawazu Nanadaru Loop Bridge is not something that you can’t sum up in one picture. It’s a road that you have to experience on motorcycle back. Please watch the below video if you have time.

今日の目的の一つは静岡県を抜けて、渥美半島まで行くことです。５月４日（土）はまだ日本の信じられないほど長いGWの一部であるため、渥美半島先端に宿がうまく取れず、渥美半島に入ったところで予約したAIR BNBを最終目的地にしました。

Today’s goal was to get out of Shizuoka Prefecture and to Aichi prefecture’s Atsumi Peninsula. Since May 4th was still part of Japan’s ungodly long Golden Week holiday season, it was a little hard to find a place to stay at a reasonable price where I had originally wanted to stay, but found a nice-looking place at the beginning of the peninsula.

静岡県は観光及び仕事で何度も訪問しています。そのため、渥美半島への途中の道にあるマイナーな観光地を探しだし(この観光地って、掛川城のこと？)、掛川市にある掛川城を見ることにしました。

So, to be honest, I have been to Shizuoka Prefecture many times for work and leisure. Because of this, I decided that I wanted to stop somewhere not that well known, and it seemed that Kakegawa City fit the bill, where there seems to be an interesting Castle.

東名高速で２時間をかけて、掛川市まで行きました。高速道路を降りてから、掛川城まで１０分もかかりません。アメリカにはお城の文化がないから、私は日本のお城を見るのがとても好きで、見るたびに興奮します。建築物としてもそうだし、歴史的な観点からも興味深く思っています。掛川城は1400年代から1800年代まで活用されたお城で、1854年に起きた地震の影響により、倒壊してしまいました。しかし、私の１歳の誕生日である1994年４月に、取り残された図面を元に、再建され、日本初の木造復元天守となっています。正直、掛川城の周りには、そんなに見るものが多くないが、ドライブからのひと休みとしては優れている場所です。

After about two hours on the highway, I arrived at Kakegawa city. Kakegawa Castle is located not even 10 minutes off the highway. It goes without saying but Castles are interesting. I mean not only do we not have any in the United States, but just being able to see and go inside of such a historical and beautiful object is an experience to treasure. Kakegawa Castle was in use from the 15th to the 19th century until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1854. However, on my first birthday in April 1994, the castle was rebuilt based upon schematics that had been saved. It is known as Japan’s first castle to be restored out of wood in the modern era (one of only five!). But in the end, other than the castle, there is not much else to see in the Kakegawa City area, but it’s perfect place to take a break from  the monotony of the highway.

掛川城の見学を終え、同じ掛川市にある資生堂アートハウスに行って、美術をみることにしました。入館無料でもあるため、行かない理由がなかったです。ゆっくりと展示品を見たかったが、山奥から雷が近づき、ざっとアートワークを見て、早速掛川市から離れることにしました。

After I finished walking through Kakegawa Castle, I decided to stop by the nearby Shiseido Art House to look at some art. Since the admission fee was free, I couldn’t find a reason not to go. I really had wanted to spend my time slowly looking at the art pieces, but I could hear and see some thunder and  lightning in the distance. I browsed quickly through the art pieces and booked it out of Kakegawa.

午後の2時半過ぎに掛川市を去って、宿泊先の近くにあるコーヒー・ハンバーガー屋さんで遅めのお昼、早めの夕飯を食べることにしました。今回は東名高速ではなく、ローカル道及びバイパス等を乗りました。浜松までは内陸ばっかりでしたが、浜松バイパスをのってから一気に景色が面白くなり、快晴な空と太陽で輝く海が見切れない距離まで続き、雷からの見事な逆転でした。

I got out of Kakegawa City a little after 2:30PM. I set my sights on a Coffee/Hamburger place near my AIRBNB for a late lunch early dinner type situation. Instead of getting on the Tomei Highway, I took the local roads and bypasses. Until I got to Hamamatsu, I was riding fairly inland, but things change when I got on the Hamamatsu bypass. The blue sky and the brilliance of the sun reflected off the ocean for a length of which seemed to stretch into infinity. It was the perfect dissonance to the thunderstorm I had left behind.

浜松を過ぎて、豊橋の手前に道の駅潮見坂の表紙を見かけ、ここに止めたら、海にいけるのではないかという予感がして、バイパスから降りました。思った通り、海までバイパスを通りぬける散歩道があり、すっきりする海に足を突っ込みながら、リフレッシュすることができました。５月で、25度にしかあがっていないが、雪国出身で北欧系の血が流れているので、実は少し暑さに弱いです。

After passing Hamamatsu, and before arriving at Toyohashi, I saw a sign for Roadside Station "Michi-no-Eki" Shiomizaka, some instinct told me that if I stopped at this roadstop I would be able to get to the ocean. Just as I thought, there was a walkway that lead me to the ocean. I took my boots off, walked in the ocean for a small refresher.

道の駅潮見坂から20分かけて、午後4時過ぎに漸くハンバーガー屋さんにたどり着きました。GWはこれまで奥さんのご家族と美味しい和食を盛りだくさん頂き、少しアメリカンな気分になっていました。お店の外観も内観も、私が昔アメリカで行ったことがあったクラシックなダイナーなようで、正直、アットホームな感じでした。お店は見た目のみではなく、ハンバーガー及びケーキの味も最強でした。

At about half past four, 20 minutes after I left the roadstop, I got to the hamburger place. Up until now, I had spent Golden Week at my Fiance’s place, and had eaten a plethora of Japanese food, and was feeling up for something American. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant felt like every diner I had ever been to in my life mixed into one. It felt like I was at home. Luckily, it was not only the dcour that was on point, the hamburger was amazing as well.

ただし、私の本日の旅においては、一つの課題がありました。AIR BNBのホストの仕事のご都合により、夜８時まで時間をつぶすこととなりました。ところで、このハンバーガー屋さんのコーヒーはお替り自由でした。それで、コーヒーをお替りしつつ、本日のブログを大半を書き、途中でレモネードクッキーケーキも頂きました。

However, there was one problem with my trip today. The host of the Airbnb I had booked had to work until 8PM, and I had some time to kill. However, it just to happened that the hamburger shop had free refills on it’s coffee. So I hunkered down to write this blog, and eventually helped myself to a lemon cookie cake.

暗くなってしばらくしてから、AIRBNBに向かいました。バイクを買って、ほぼ２か月間が経つが、暗い闇の中をバイクで走るのが初めてです。やっぱ、不慣れの道を夜で走るのは避けたいですね。AIRBNBについて、早速ビールの乾杯で歓迎されました。シャワーをさっと浴び、中庭でオーナーさんと他のゲスト達とバーベキューをし、火が消えるまで、日本人の英語に関して言語学的に議論を交えました。

Well after it got dark, I headed out to my Airbnb. To be honest, it’s only been two months since I bought my motorcycle, but today was my first time to ride in the dark. Yeah, I think I’m going to stay away from riding on unknown roads in the dark for a while. After getting to my Airbnb, I was swiftly greeted with a beer. I took a quick shower, and joined the owner and guests in the center garden to grill some fresh caught fish and discuss English linguistic theories about Japanese people until the fire faded out.

Today’s drive, 4H35M, 259 KM

On April 28th, I finally was able to set off on my trip. The first day’s goal was going to the Izu Peninsula near the city of Kawazu. While my heart is ready to set off on this trip, the start also happens to coincide with the start of Japan’s Golden Week national holiday season. This year happens to be a special golden week with 10 days off work, meaning that over half the country will be crowding up the roads. As such, I decided to spend most of this years Golden Week at my fiance’s families second home. Hey, before going off for a month by myself, I should spend some quality time with the ones I love.

28日の午前中から荷造りが始まりました。荷物を集めて、サイドバッグに積むのは楽でしたが、本来はサイドバッグをマジックテープでシートに固定し、更に固定ベルトを使用し、揺れ等を防ぐはずが、サイドバッグの重さにより、マジックテープのみだとすぐに外れました。何とか、固定ベルト一つで、シートに取り付けましたが、メルカリより購入した中古のサイドバッグに、固定ベルトが４つあるはずが、３つだけでしたので、サイドバッグをうまく固定できなかったのです。しばらく苦戦しましたが、結局ビニール紐でぎゅっと固定しました。

I started packing up my things on the morning of the 28th. While getting my things together, and putting them in the saddle bags was easy, getting the saddlebags on my motorcycle was not easy. The saddlebags are supposed to be first connected by velcro and looped over the rear seat. But the weight of the saddlebags could not be held up by what little of the saddlebags’ velcro overlapped. I was able to get the saddlebags situated on my motorcycle with the straps that came with the saddlebags that I purchased second hand off of Merukari, however, it seemed that I was one strap short, and no matter what I did with the three straps I had on hand, I could not quite get the bags to feel quite stable enough to set off. I eventually took to using a disposable rope that I had on hand to settle the bags in place.

Now that I had all my bags in place, I was finally able to set off on my journey.

GWの２日目であり、バイクの不慣れもあるため、高速道路ではなく、一般道路でゆっくりと伊豆まで向かうことにしました。

当日の経路を２段階に分けて、東京都の北区から、茅ケ崎海岸に行く段階（約２時間）と、茅ヶ崎海岸から海岸沿いに、河津まで行く段階（約３時間）にしました。

Since it was the second day of the crowded Golden Week, and I still wanted to get more acquainted with my motorcycle, I decided to skip the highways and take more local roads to the Izu Peninsula.

I split the day’s trip into two phases. First was from Kita-ku in Tokyo to the Chigasaki Coast (Approx 2 hours). Second being from the Chigasaki Coast to Kawazu City(approx. 3 hours).

そもそも何故高速道路にしなかったかというと、免許を取得してから、旅に出発するまで、教習所以外の運転は１２５キロ程度にしかおよばなかったため、バイクの癖を知るため、よりゆっくりな道で向かうことにしました。

The reason why I didn’t want to ride on the highways was because from getting my license to going on this trip, I had only ridden about 125KM on open roads (not including my six months on the training course). I wanted to take this first day to get well acquainted with my motorcycle.

ナビで、適当に茅ケ崎海岸を検索して、鎌倉の少し西にある、１３４号線に到着する手前にまで行きました。北区から茅ヶ崎海岸までは２時間弱で、関東のコンクリートジャングルは永遠に変わらない景色と思いきや、神奈川県に入ると、所々富士山の白い頂上が見られ、興奮と共に、富士山がこれから始まる日本一周、自然を満喫する旅を予感させました。

Searched up Chigasaki Coast on google maps, which put at the coastline slightly west of Kamakura island, which ended up being about 2 hours from Tokyo’s Kita-ku. What I thought was going to be an endless grind through Kanto’s concrete jungle turned into a magnificent ode to the national symbol of Japan, as well as a tribute to my trip around Japan, when I was able to vividly see the snow capped Mount Fuji after creeping into Kanagawa Prefecture.   

お昼ご飯と少しの休憩をしようと思って、道沿いのコンビニにバイクをいったん停めました。お腹も空いていて、コンビニから買ったサンドイッチを食べながら、食べログで周りの店を検索したら、評価の高いアイス屋があったので、デザートを食べることにしました。

Once I got close to the coast, I decided to take a break for lunch. I stopped at a convenience store along the way, and while eating a sandwich which I bought there, searched for any interesting stores in the area. It seemed that on Tabelog there was a highly rated ice cream store not even a minute away, and I was not going to pass it up.

丁寧に作られているアイスを10種類以上販売していて、購入する味を決める前に、珍しい味のものを試食し、オーガニックアッサムティーや、みしょうゴールドは特に美味しかったが、どうしても自分の好みがあり、メープルウォールナッツとモカアーモンドファッジダブルコーンにしました。(ダブル　５９０円)太陽を浴びながら外で食べて、とても美味しかったです。しかも店からでたアメリカ人観光客が私のバイクを褒めてくれました。

The Ice Cream store sold over 10 great looking flavors. Before decided on which flavors to buy, I tried a few of the more rare flavors such as assam tea and mishyou gold (a grapefruit like tangerine). But to be honest, I had my eyes set on the maple walnut and mocha almond fudge. Got a double cone for 590 JPY, and enjoyed it outside in the sun. I even got a compliment on my bike from a a lady from California who happened getting ice cream as well.

アイスを食べ、リフレッシュができてから、旅の第２段を始めました。

After finishing my ice cream was refreshed and ready to start the second leg of my day.

次は湘南海岸沿いに、河津まで行きます。ここまで来て、バイクを運転する自信がもう少し付いたので、バイパス等に乗って、向かうことにしました。１３４号線が途中から西湘バイパスに入り、海の上を走っているような感じがして、とても気持ち良かったです。

Next up was going along the Shonan coast to Kawazu City. After the first two hours of the day, I was feeling fairly confident with my NC700x, and decided to take some faster roads. Halfway through route 134 I got on the Seishou Bypass, which feels like your riding on-top of the ocean.

西湘バイパスのだめなところですが、ETCカードが利用できなく、現金払いのみなのです。そうすると、バイパスの出口のところが非常に込み合って、28日（日）は１キロほどの渋滞がありました。ただし、これがバイクの有利なところであって、止まっている車を追い抜き、３０分の渋滞を数分で抜けられました。今までは車から、抜いてゆくバイクに対して「いいな」としか思ったことがなく、漸く自分でその気持ちよさを感じました。

The real problem with the Seishou bypass is that you can't always use the ETC (Electronic Toll Card, a fast pass like card) to pay your tolls and sometimes have to fork over cash. This creates some crazy long backups at the exists. On this particular sunday in April, I was facing over a 1km backup. However, being that I was on a motorcycle, I was able to swiftly bypass the hot mess, not only saving me 30 minutes, but finally giving me that riders vindication that I had long so sought after in the many times that I myself had sat in a hot car watching myself get passed by.

バイパスを降りて、熱海に入り、茅ケ崎から一時間半がたったため、そろそろ休憩が必要でした。熱海に着いたのは午後４時ぐらいで、河津市まで後一時間半強が残っていました。コーヒーのみの休憩としました。たまたま駐車したところのとなりに、熱海の顔出しパネルがあり、記念写真をとりました。

After getting off the bypass, I arrived at Atami. This took about an hour and a half, and I was about ready for a break. It was about 4pm, and I still had over an hour and a half to Kawazu, so I decided on taking only a short coffee break. It so happened that there was a photo spot near me, and decided to take photo for the road.

１０分の休憩を終え、河津市まで一気に進めることにしました。このドライブの面白いところは、茅ケ崎から海岸を見渡すと、目的地が大体見えていたことです。高速道路よりも時間はかかるが、海岸に沿って、着々と見えるところまで進むことが気持ち良かったです。

After my 10 minute break, I just wanted to get down to Kawazu. The interesting thing about this first leg, is that I could see down the coast all the way to Kawazu from Chigasaki. While this way does take more time than going on the highway, it was a much more fun drive.

熱海から河津までの間の道は良いところもありますが、伊東市周辺の渋滞が酷かったです。何とか追い抜きし、河津までいくことができました。GWの間の宿泊先が奥さんの家族の別荘であり、別荘が崖の上に設置されており、河津市街地を過ぎて、１３５号線から、別荘まで1分もかからない急な坂道に入り、漸くお目的地に着いたと思いました。ところが、この坂道はかなり急である上に、ヘアピンカーブが３つあります。その最初のヘアピンカーブでバイクを見事に倒しました。

While there are great places between Atami and Kawazu, the roads were fairly backed up around Kawazu. But I was able to get around it on my bike. My fiance’s families second home is built on the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean, and is a little past the main part of Kawazu City, not even a minute off of route 135.  The problem is that it is a fairly steep hill with three hairpin turns up to their house. I lost in on the first turn.

倒した理由を説明すると、ヘアピンカーブの左（外）側は右（中）側より平たいのに、左（外）側ではなく、右（中）側を通ろうとし、最も坂及びカーブが急な右側（中）をかなりロースピードで通ろうとし、エンジンの回転を十分上げずに、エンストしてしまいました。エンストだけなら足を踏んで止めれば良かったですが、坂とカーブとバイクの角度の関係で、エンストしたところでは足が地面に届かず、足が地面に付く角度までバイクが傾いたところ、バイクの慣性質量を片足だけでは支え切れず、私がバイクと一緒に倒れ、バイクが地面に付く前にバイクから抜けることができました。

While I say that I lost it, what really happened is that the left side, or outside of the hairpin turn is much more flat the the right right side or inside of the turn. I mistakenly tried to take the inside turn, which was much steeper, and by not giving enough gas to the engine stalled the thing. While usually after a stall I can get my feet on the ground, my bike was at the perfect angle on the hill at where my right foot couldn’t touch the ground. As the bike started leaning right to the point where I could get my foot on the hill, I was not able to support the inertial mass of the falling bike and I started to go down with it. Luckily I was able to get myself out from under the bike before it hit the ground.

坂道でバイクを持ち上げるのは、そう簡単ではないが、ホンダのNC７００xの後部席の横に荷物を止める金属のバーが２つあり、左手で金属のバーと右手でハンドル掴み、何とか自分で持ち上げることができました。

So it goes without being said that getting your bike off the ground on a hill not the easiest thing.  However, luckily the Honda NC700x has metal luggage racks on the sides which provide perfect leverage in tandem with the handles for lifting the bike.

バイクの初心者はいつかどこかでバイクを倒すと言われています。やっぱり本当のことでした。でも、これはこれで勉強の１つであり、少しの傷がバイクに残っていますが、少しの労力で磨くことができますでしょう。それでは、これから数日間雨ということもあり、４日（土）まで伊豆から動かないこととしました。その間、奥さんと奥さんのご両親とゆっくりと過ごすよていです。

It is said that you are doomed to dropping your first bike, and it turns out the writing was on the wall for me. But, I’ll take this as a lesson in riding. While there are a few cosmetic scratches on my motorcycle, they can be buffed out without any problems. 

Unfortunately, it seems that Izu is in for rain for the next few days, so I’ll stay put until the weather clears up on Saturday March 4th and spend time with the lady.

今日のフィリップの一言：人生は山あり谷あり

Phrase of the day: Life has its share of ups and downs. 

４月末から、前職である大手日本メーカーの有給消化に入り、６月より大手外資系コンサルティングファームに転職の予定です。このせっかくの期間を使って、はじめて日本に来たときに湧いた夢を実現しようと思いました。それが、日本の海岸沿いをバイクで一周することです。

私はアメリカのウィスコンシン州出身で、いわゆる中西部というところです。生まれてから、１７歳まで暮らし、高３の時に新潟市へ一年間交換留学をしました。新潟市に行く前まで、海外には行ったことがなかったです。新潟にいて、初めて山と海の堺である海岸を知って、大変感動しました。何故なら、ウィスコンシン州というのは、非常に平たいところであって、山も海もない地域です。

社会人2年目の時に、上記の夢を思い出し、バイクの教習所に通い始めました。そもそもバイクを乗ったことがなかった私が、大型免許に目を付けて、半年かかりましたが、昨年の２月に免許証を漸く取得しました。ただ、仕事において、シリコンバレー発ベンチャー企業の日本支社立ち上げで忙しくて、なかなかバイクを乗る時間が取れませんでした。

免許証の取得から一年経ち、転職先が概ね決まったところで、夢を実現するプランを作戦し始めました。メーカーでの有給を消化し、一ヶ月の休みが取れれば、日本を一周する余裕があるかなと思いました。転職先は６月開始に決まったため、５月いっぱい休めば、最も快適なシーズンで日本をまわれるなんて素晴らしいタイミングです。

４月から準備を始めました。まずはバイクの購入。色々とネットで検索してみて、長いツーリングにおけるコスパを考えたら、ホンダのNC700Xに絞り、好きな白色を頑張って探しました。幸い、西東京のホンダドリームで条件の良い認定中古車があって、それに即決しました。

正直、この旅は、行き先や宿泊先を決めることもなく、とにかく行くところまで行くと決意しスタートします。どうなるかは分かりません。

とにかく、日本を一周するぜ。

After three years working at a Japanese specialty chemicals manufacturer in Tokyo, I have decided to change jobs and work as an industrial consultant at PWC consulting in Tokyo. In anticipation of my new job, I decided to take a month off of work and realize a dream I have had since the first time I came to Japan; traveling the coast of Japan on the back of a motorcycle. 

I was born and raised in the American Midwest, in a place called Wisconsin where I lived until I was 17. In my senior year of high school, I studied abroad to Japan in a place called Niigata, which is located north of Tokyo on Sea of Japan. Until I had gone to Niigata I had never been out of the country, and had not seen a lot of the US either. It is in Niigata that I first learned of the magnificence of Japan's mountain dotted shore line, where cliffs and the ocean mix and churn into one.       

Two years working out of college, in 2017 June I remember my dream of riding around Japan. After which I started going to a riding school in Saitama prefecture, north of Tokyo. I had never ridden a motorcycle before, but decided to get my unlimited motorcycle license (bikes over 400CC). In Japan it is typical to first get your mid-size motorcycle license (up to 400CC) and then work up to your unlimited license. However, I didn’t want to waste time and money taking two tests. It took me about half a year to get my unlimited motorcycle license in Japan, and about three times to pass the road test, but I finally had my license in February of 2018. However, my job of helping start and build a silicon valley’s Japanese operations had kept me busy and I could never find the time to go out on a motorcycle ride.

A year after getting my license, and after I had decided on my next place of work, I started thinking about realizing my motorcycle trip. If I took a month of PTO with my next job starting in June, I would have the full month of May to travel around Japan, which just happens to be the month with the best weather.

I started prepping for my journey in April. First things first, I had to buy a motorcycle. I spent a long time searching on the internet for a good touring bike that wouldn’t cost too much. I settled on Honda’s NC700X. I was lucky that in the Western Tokyo Honda dealer was selling a white (my favorite color) certified used one for a good deal with the right modifications.  

To be honest, for this trip I haven’t decided a thing. Not sure where I will go, stay or eat. I shall follow the road, and see where it takes me.
