The cancellations threaten to upend the "Could It Be Magic" singer's return to Broadway following a more than two-decade absence.

The concerts, which had been slated for Thursday through Sunday, will be made up in February and March, his website said. Manilow, 69, will try to perform on Tuesday, the next scheduled show.

Manilow canceled two preview shows earlier in the week because of the illness, after which his website promised the singer would be ready for opening night "come hell or high water."

"It turns out the only thing worse than hell and high water is bronchitis," Manilow's website said of the cancellations. "Barry is deeply sorry to disappoint his fans and is doing everything he can to ensure a speedy recovery."

Manilow has signed on for a 25-show run at the St. James Theatre in New York. The native New Yorker typically performs long-running shows at Las Vegas hotels.

Most of the team's veteran players disembarked first, including center Jonathan Goodwin, who won a Super Bowl three years ago with the Saints.

The 49ers will play Baltimore next Sunday, seeking their sixth Super Bowl crown but first since the 1994 season. The Ravens arrive Monday.

The new fund, in which Goldman could invest another $150 million of its own money, is being structured as a business development company, an investment vehicle that is specifically exempt from the so-called Volcker Rule that puts limits on some activities by Wall Street firms.

A January marketing brochure for the fund, reviewed by Reuters, said the fund will provide loans to "underserved middle market public and private companies" that commercial banks have largely refrained lending to since the financial crisis began.

The fund is a way for Goldman to keep a hand in the credit business despite new constraints on trading credit products that are expected to come with the finalization of the Volcker Rule. The rule that would ban proprietary trading carries exemptions in its current form for lending and small business development.

A spokesman for Goldman's asset management group, which is sponsoring the Goldman Sachs Liberty Harbor Capital fund, declined to comment.

The fund's portfolio, valued at around $50 million, already includes an average stake of about $8.5 million in six companies, with a weighted average yield of roughly 11 percent, according to the brochure. The investments are in both senior secured loans and unsecured high-yield debt.

The new fund comes at a time that Wall Street firms are looking to find new ways to entice their best brokerage customers into new products. While business development companies are not a new innovation, the Goldman fund could be a sign of things to comes from Wall Street firms as they adjust to prospect of lesser trading dollars because of the Volcker rule.

The Volcker rule is named after former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker.

The rule, which is still being hashed out by regulators, would limit the kind of activities Wall Street banks can engage in, including capping the amount of money firms like Goldman can invest in their own hedge funds and private equity funds and preventing them from trading certain kinds of financial products for their own accounts.

Changes banks including Goldman have made in anticipation of the Volcker Rule's prop-trading ban have already altered the competitive landscape noticeably in the credit space. Last fall a managing director at the private equity firm Blackstone Group took a jab at Goldman and other Wall Street banks, thanking Volcker for taking away its largest competitor in the credit space.

And while it is unlikely that funds that extend loans to businesses will be impacted by the Volcker rule, Goldman is one of several Wall Street firms that has lobbied regulators to make clear that loans made by credit funds are no different from traditional bank loans.

Jaret Seiberg, senior policy analyst at Guggenheim Partners, said it would make sense for Wall Street's biggest banks to follow Goldman's lead.

"Lending is outside the scope of the Volcker Rule, so investing in loans seems like a smart strategy going forward," Seiberg said.

In its current form, the Volcker Rule also exempts investments that are designed primarily to help develop small businesses and, as the rule puts it, "promote the public welfare."

"'We like small business,' is the historical background," said Rick Carnell, a professor at Fordham Law School who focuses on regulation. "Banking law contains various exemptions for financing small business which go back decades."

The managers of the Goldman fund are the same group of portfolio managers that have oversee group of credit hedge funds for Goldman's asset management group, some of which also make business loans.

The Liberty Harbor group is led by Gregg Felton, who joined Goldman in 2006 for the now defunct hedge fund Amaranth Advisors.

Business development companies function much like real estate investment trusts and pay out 90 percent of the ordinary income they generate by way of dividends. Publicly traded business development companies provide an opportunity for investors to easily move in and out of the fund by buying or selling shares.

According to the marketing materials, if Goldman takes the fund public, it expects to do so by July 1, 2015.

As opposed to a traditional credit fund, business development companies offer investors greater transparency into investments because the funds must comply with all Securities and Exchange Commission regulatory filing requirements.

Smoking is blamed for a third of all US cancer cases and being overweight leads to another 20 percent of the deadly burden that costs the United States some $226 billion per year in health care expenses and lost productivity.

For instance, up to three quarters of US lung cancer cases could be avoided if people did not smoke, said the article in the US journal Science Translational Medicine.

Science has shown that plenty of other cancers can also be prevented, either with vaccines to prevent human papillomavirus and hepatitis, which can cause cervical and liver cancers, or by protecting against sun exposure, which can cause skin cancer.

Society as a whole must recognize the need for these changes and take seriously an attempt to instill healthier habits, said the researchers.

"It's time we made an investment in implementing what we know," said lead author Graham Colditz, an epidemiologist at the Siteman Cancer Center at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

Exercising, eating right and refraining from smoking are key ways to prevent up to half of the 577,000 deaths from cancer in the United States expected this year, a toll that is second only to heart disease, according to the study.

But a series of obstacles to change are well enshrined in the United States, which will see an estimated 1,638,910 new cancer cases diagnosed this year.

Those hurdles include skepticism that cancer can be prevented and the habit of intervening too late in life to stop or prevent cancer that has already taken root.

Also, much of the research on cancer focuses on treatment instead of prevention, and tends to take a short-term view rather than a long-term approach.

"Humans are impatient, and that human trait itself is an obstacle to cancer prevention," said the study.

Further complicating those factors are the income gaps between the upper and lower social classes that mean poor people tend to be more exposed to cancer risk factors than the wealthy.

"Pollution and crime, poor public transportation, lack of parks for play and exercise, and absence of nearby supermarkets for fresh food hinder the adoption and sustained practice of a lifestyle that minimizes the risk of cancer and other diseases," said the study.

"As in other countries, social stratification in the United States exacerbates lifestyle differences such as access to health care, especially prevention and early detection services.

"Mammograms, colon screening, diet and nutrition support, smoking cessation resources and sun protection mechanisms are simply less available to the poor."

That means any bid to overcome deep social imbalances must be supported by policy changes, said co-author Sarah Gehlert, professor of racial and ethnic diversity at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work and the School of Medicine.

"After working in public health for 25 years, I've learned that if we want to change health, we need to change policy," she said.

"Stricter tobacco policy is a good example. But we can't make policy change on our own. We can tell the story, but it requires a critical mass of people to talk more forcefully about the need for change."

A separate annual report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other major US cancer groups found that death rates from cancer in the United States continued to decline between 1.3 and 1.7 percent from 1998 to 2008.

New cancer diagnoses also decreased less than one percent per year from 1996 to 2006 and leveled off from 2006 to 2008.

However, the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer also highlighted the problem of obesity-related cancers, such as colorectal cancer, as well as cancer of the kidney, esophagus, pancreas, breast and endometrial lining.

"If you watch your diet, exercise, and manage your weight, you can not only prevent your risk of getting many lethal forms of cancer, you will also increase your chances of doing well if you should get almost any form of cancer," counseled Edward Benz, president of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Senator Charles Schumer said, however, the spending plan will include proposed new revenue despite Republican warnings that they will not go along with any more tax increases.

"We're going to do a budget this year and it is going to have revenue in it, and Republicans ought to get used to that," Schumer of New York, the Senate's No. 3 Democrat, told NBC's "Meet the Press."

President Barack Obama's Democrats control the Senate, but have not passed a budget since 2010 amid disagreements within the party over possible spending cuts, particularly in entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security.

This has drawn the ire of Republicans who accuse them of a dereliction of duty that has undermined efforts to reduce spending and the U.S. debt.

Washington is expected to reach the limit of its $16.4 trillion borrowing power by early March, and lifting the debt ceiling will allow the federal government to continue its work uninterrupted.

Republican leaders in the House of Representatives, in a major concession on Friday, said they would be willing to raise the debt limit for three months and, at the same time, drop their demand that any increase in the government's borrowing power be matched in spending cuts.

But Republicans said they would require the Senate to finally pass a budget that could include spending reductions as well as changes in the tax code.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, appearing on NBC with Schumer, called the House Republican plan "a step in the right direction" and accused the Democratic-led Senate of not doing its job.

Schumer called the House Republican offer "a major victory" for Obama, who has vowed to refuse to negotiate with Congress on the debt limit.

Besides, Schumer said, "We need a budget .... It's a great opportunity to get us some more revenues."

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said he is ready to focus on spending cuts in any budget negotiations, but considers tax increases a closed matter. The White House had said it would accept the three-month plan so long as it was not conditioned on spending cuts.

After the deadline for the debt ceiling increase, Congress faces a March 1 deadline to avert automatic spending cuts and a March 27 expiration of funding for government agencies and programs that could result in a partial federal shutdown.

A three-month debt limit extension would add a further deadline in April or May.

The recent separate deal between Congress and the White House to avert "the fiscal cliff" of automatic tax increases on most Americans and severe spending cuts imposed a tax hike on many of the wealthiest Americans.

It renewed most tax cuts enacted by Republican President George W. Bush, but allowed those tax cuts on families with incomes of more than $450,000 to expire.

In New Bataan township, which was ravaged by Typhoon Bopha last week, refugees, rescuers and aid workers took a break from a grueling search for bodies and survivors to watch the fight on a big TV screen only to be disappointed by their hero's sixth-round knockout.

The fight took place Saturday night in Las Vegas, or Sunday in the Philippines. Town spokesman Marlon Esperanza said hundreds of villagers, most of whom lost their homes to mud- and rock-laden flash floods, packed the local gymnasium used as a temporary shelter. Many had hoped Pacquiao would triumph and share his earnings with the typhoon victims.

"People were really dismayed," Esperanza told The Associated Press by telephone. "It was like they were hit by another typhoon."

Elementary math teacher Constancio Olivar said people were cheering for Pacquiao in the sixth round, then fell silent when Marquez landed a shot flush to the jaw ofPacquiao, who fell heavily to the canvas and remained motionless for some time.

"It was like a double blow for me this disaster and this defeat," said Olivar, whose house was destroyed in the storm. "We were all crestfallen. Everyone fell silent, stunned. It was like we saw a tsunami."

In Manila, President Benigno Aquino III's spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Pacquiao's defeat "cannot set aside the many honors Manny has given to the Filipino people."

"Nothing has changed, the Filipino people continue to admire and support Manny," he said.

Boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz said the defeat could demoralize Filipinos, particularly those in the typhoon-hit areas on the main southern island of Mindanao where Pacquiao is from.

"It's a double tragedy," he said. "People were looking at Pacquiao winning to give them some joy, some hope, some satisfaction. It didn't happen. On top of that, their anguish is further heightened as a result of his loss. ... This is like (Bopha) took a U-turn and came back to hit us with a Pacquiao knockout."

Nathanielsz said Pacquiao, who trained for two months, may not have spent enough time for physical conditioning unlike Marquez, who spent twice as many months preparing for the fight.

"The problem is when you get older, everything else must flow from the basic foundation of strength and conditioning. If you are not in condition, you have a problem," he said.

At the Baclaran Central Elementary School hall in the Manila suburb of Paranaque, where hundreds watched the fight, government employee Jacqueline Gabriel said she was dismayed by Pacquiao's performance.

"Pacman is weaker now," she said, using Pacquiao's nickname. "He is no longer like what he used to be. ... He should retire now."

But factory worker Charlie Cerillo, 37, said Pacquiao, who is also a congressman, should not retire yet.

"He should not have been a congressman. He should focus on sports and if he wants to be a congressman, he should focus on being a congressman," he said.

Pacquiao's mother, Dionisia, said that if it was up to her, she wanted her son to stop boxing.

"I want him to rest now, to relax," she told DZMM radio. "If he wants to be a politician, let him serve and pour everything into that. ... Only God will make him stop."

Corbat, who took over as chief executive in October after the board abruptly ousted Vikram Pandit, promised investors the third-largest U.S. bank will do a better job for shareholders during his tenure. But he warned that the environment remained challenging and it would take time.

Citigroup's fourth-quarter profit missed Wall Street's expectations by a wide margin, even though earnings were up from a year earlier as trading revenue rebounded. The bank's shares fell 2.9 percent for the day.

The bank took $2.32 billion of charges for layoffs and lawsuits in the fourth quarter. It also declined to release loan loss reserves just yet, a step which would have boosted profits.

Pandit was still in the job when the fourth quarter started, and some analysts said that by not releasing reserves Corbat may have understated financial results.

"It may be that the new CEO is holding back," said Gary Townsend, president of hedge fund Hill-Townsend Capital LLC. "There's no reason that the quarter when Pandit left and (Corbat) came in should be great."

Citigroup declined to comment on whether that was its strategy.

But analysts on the conference call repeatedly challenged Chief Financial Officer John Gerspach on why the company did not draw down more of its loan loss reserves, particularly those for mortgage assets, whose value is being lifted by the stronger housing market.

Gerspach said that while the housing and mortgage loss trends are good, the company had first wanted to make sure the U.S. government got past the so-called "fiscal cliff" threat to the economy and the damage that might have done to housing.

"What we would like to see now is how the U.S. deals with the ongoing debt ceiling debate," Gerspach said.

He eventually allowed that if the economy proves resilient to prolonged debates in Washington over government debt, "maybe that will give us the basis then to make some other decisions."

Such a cautious approach to the reserves may well set up Corbat to report higher earnings later in his tenure, according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy.

NOT SATISFIED

Corbat said Citi's various businesses were combating competitive and regulatory problems, as well as issues dating to the financial crisis that continue to plague the bank.

Citi shares rose in Corbat's first three months as CEO, outpacing peers, as some investors welcomed Pandit's replacement and anticipated changes in the bank's structure.

Corbat, however, seemed in no hurry to immediately deliver on those expectations. He said he was not yet ready to release new performance benchmarks for investors to judge the ability of his team to meet their goals.

"We've got to get to a point where we stop destroying our shareholders' capital," Corbat said. "We are not satisfied with these bottom-line earnings."

That left some disappointed. "It was a stay-tuned type of message," said Tom Lewandowski, an analyst at brokerage Edward Jones who recommends Citi stock.

"I expected to hear more than we got," particularly in the way of goals for company performance, Lewandowski said.

RBC Capital's Cassidy said most investors are still willing to wait for changes. "Traditionally, six months is a fair amount of time for new management to get their arms around the situation."

While Citigroup's stock is up more than 40 percent in the past 12 months, investors still see the company as an enterprise on a difficult mission to shrink its way to prosperity, Townsend said.

The skepticism shows in the company's stock price. Citigroup's shares trade for only 0.8 of its tangible book value, or its net worth. JPMorgan Chase & Co, which on Wednesday announced its third-consecutive year of record profits, trades for 1.2 times its tangible book value, while Wells Fargo & Co trades for about 1.6 times.

PROFIT MISSES

On Thursday there was relatively little in the way of 2013 outlook from the bank, though CFO Gerspach did tell analysts that Citi expects interest margins to be steady in 2013 relative to 2012. Bank investors have had a close eye on margins lately.

Fourth-quarter net income was $1.2 billion, or 38 cents a share, compared with $956 million, or 31 cents a share, in the same quarter of 2011.

Revenue from fixed income markets increased 58 percent, driving Citi's Securities and Banking segment back to profitability. Company-wide revenue, adjusted for certain items, increased 8 percent, while operating expenses were unchanged.

Results were reduced by new legal costs of $1.29 billion, or 27 cents a share, and a previously announced corporate restructuring charge of $1.03 billion, or 21 cents a share.

Gerspach said $500 million of the new legal costs came from what he called a variety of issues in the ongoing U.S. consumer banking business. He later said he expects legal costs to remain "somewhat elevated."

Expenses recorded for changes in the value of some of the bank's debt and obligations of derivatives counterparties were 10 cents a share, compared with 1 cent a year earlier.

Excluding the many one-time items, Citi said it earned 69 cents per share. On that basis, analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S on average expected 96 cents per share.

The operating earnings were 15 cents below the lowest of the 22 estimates that comprised the consensus forecast. It is the third year in a row that the bank's fourth-quarter results have missed Wall Street forecasts by at least 20 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

In a truly strange turn of events, nearlyover the weekend.

Its a shame, Stoughton, Mass. police Executive Officer Robert Devine told the Enterprise News.

About 200 attendees were at the baby shower, which was held at the Club Luis de Camoes. In surveillance video from the incident, a beer bottle reportedly can be seen flying past a someone's head. A large-scale brawl immediately erupted.

As the brawl unfolds, tables are overturned while chairs and punches are thrown.

We were outnumbered. It was a very, very dangerous scene, the police officer said in a separate interview with local NBC affiliate . We certainly feel that we were very lucky that no one got injured.

Police say that after the melee began, it was the same female bartender who avoided the flying beer bottle who ushered the several children in attendance to safety in a nearby closet. The bartender then called police, who quickly arrived on the scene.

Amongst the four males arrested was a 14-year-old boy.

And at one point, police say they were forced to use an electronic stun gun after being surrounded by an angry crowd of baby shower attendees.

Police say they still dont know what launched the incident and are reviewing tape of the incident as they consider making further arrests as part of their investigation.

The three adult men arrested all plead not guilty Monday morning at Stoughton District Court. Patrick Cardoso Lopes, 24, Paulo Pires Depina, 24, and Aderito Lopes Deandrade, 22, all of Brockton, were released on $1,000 bail, according to the Enterprise News.

The 14-year-old will be to be arraigned this week in juvenile court.

Ralph Lauren's sales have been hurt by its phasing out of stores and boutiques operated by local partners in China. It plans to replace the stores over time with company-run shops in what it has said will be better spots that elevate its image.

The company's sales have also been hit by the phase-out of its American Living brand, which was dropped by low-price department store J.C. Penney Co Incearlier this year.

Ralph Lauren Chief Operating Officer Roger Farah said in a statement that global economic conditions "lead us to be incrementally more cautious on near-term demand".

The company now expects revenue to be up 2 percent to 3 percent for the year ending in March, compared with a previous forecast for mid-single-digit percentage growth.

Ralph Lauren shares were down 2.5 percent at $155 in morning trading.

For the current quarter, which includes the holiday season, Ralph Lauren expects a low-single-digit percentage revenue gain, with sales at its own shops vastly outperforming business at department stores such as Macy's Incand other retailers that carry its various brands.

Revenue fell 2.2 percent to $1.86 billion. Excluding the impact of its Chinese store closings and the American Living brand, revenue rose 3 percent in the quarter.

But that decline was less steep than the company's forecast of a mid-single-digit percentage drop.

Wholesale sales fell 8 percent in part because Ralph Lauren shopped fewer goods to European stores. Sales at Ralph Lauren's own stores rose 5 percent, despite the impact of China.

Net income fell 8.5 percent to $213.7 million, or $2.29 per share, in the second quarter ended September 29, from $233.5 million, or $2.46 per share, a year earlier.
