Clinton spoke hours after an Israeli Cabinet minister declared that the Palestinians would not establish a state in territory Israel controls.

It underscored a chasm between the country's official support for creating an independent Palestinian state and the hard-line opponents who dominate Israel's ruling coalition.

Repeating arguments made for years by Israeli doves and centrists, Clinton warned that increasing numbers of Palestinians under Israeli rule will ultimately force the country to lose either its Jewish majority or its democratic nature if Palestinians are not given equal rights as citizens.

"Is it really okay with you if Israel has a majority of its people living within your territory who are not now, and never will be, allowed to vote?" Clinton asked at a conference in central Israel honoring President Shimon Peres, who is turning 90.

"If it is, can you say with a straight face that you'll be a democracy? If you let them vote, can you live with not being a Jewish state? And if you can't live with one of those things, then you are left with trying to cobble together some theory of a two-state solution," he said, with a Palestinian state next to Israel.

Clinton was referring to the 4.4 million Palestinians who live in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories that Israel conquered in the 1967 Mideast war. Another 1.4 million live inside Israel, alongside about 6.5 million Jews.

Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, but it retains significant control over movement of goods and people. Israel has built more than 100 settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, where some 500,000 of its citizens live. Israel annexed east Jerusalem and sees its settlements there as neighborhoods. The international community does not recognize the annexation.

Peace negotiations have repeatedly stalled in recent years. Palestinians say they will not negotiate while Israel builds in Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, which they claim for their future state, along with Gaza. Israel insists talks must resume without conditions.

Clinton criticized Palestinians for not negotiating with Israel in 2010, when there was a months-long settlement building slowdown.

The ex-President's comments came after Cabinet minister Naftali Bennett said the Palestinians' hopes of creating a state in territories controlled by Israel had reached a "dead end."

Bennett, leader of the Jewish Home Party, echoed ideas expressed by other officials in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government.

"The idea that a Palestinian state will arise inside the Land of Israel has reached a dead end," Bennett said Monday at a meeting of the Yesha settler group.

"Never in the history of Israel have so many people dealt with so much energy with something so pointless," he said.

The statements came as the U.S. is trying to build momentum for peace talks to resume.

Many Israelis don't want their country to withdraw from the West Bank or parts of east Jerusalem because they have deep religious significance for many devout Jews, who see it as their biblical heartland and heritage.

Other Israelis worry that violent groups will fill the vacuum if they withdraw from areas under its control. They cite the case of the Gaza Strip, where the Palestinian militant Hamas seized control after Israel pulled out.

Hamas has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings, shootings and rocket attacks.

Bennett said that the policy of Israeli land concessions and withdrawals has failed. "Terrorists entered everywhere that Israel withdrew from," he said.

Last week, Netanyahu's deputy defense minister and member of his own Likud party, Danny Danon, said "there is certainly no majority" in the Likud for establishing a Palestinian state based on Israel's borders before the 1967 Mideast war.

Last month, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry shuttled between Israel and the Palestinians to try to restart talks. His return to the region has been postponed.

The Palestinians' chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat, condemned Bennett's remarks. "These are not isolated events, but a reaffirmation of political platforms and radical beliefs," he said. "Israel has officially declared the death of the two-state solution."

"I would have to say, they have a valid point," said Bowe, after his debut in Thai kickboxing ended with a thud in the second round. "It's much harder than boxing."

The former world heavyweight boxing champion had hoped to prove his critics wrong and show that he could comeback from retirement into an entirely new sport and revive some of his past glory.

But Bowe is now 45 and weighs 300 pounds, and he looked it Friday in his first fight since 2008.

Slow and out of shape, the fighter known as "Big Daddy" took a big beating from his 30-year-old unheralded Russian opponent Levgen Golovin, who attacked with repeated kicks to the shins that knocked Bowe off his feet five times. The bout ended with a technical knockout after his last fall when Bowe sat on the ground clutching his legs, wincing in pain.

"You can recover from a head shot or a body shot, but when you get kicked in the leg it lasts a long time," Bowe said, as his trainer iced his left shin. "My leg is still hurting. I don't know how long it's been 15 minutes?"

Not once during the brief fight, which ended 2 minutes into the second round, did Bowe land a punch or a kick. But he was happy to trade barbs with reporters afterward showing the wit that made him one of boxing's charismatic personalities during his brief reign as champion two decades ago.

"This ain't a setback it's a getback," Bowe said, referring to his comeback. "I had a lot of fun. I'm going to do it again. Next time it's going to be different."

Like so many boxers, Bowe lost the struggle to stay out of the ring. He had his reasons: He's bored with retirement; his millions are gone and he needs the money; he misses the adoration of fans; he loves to fight and knows little else.

Bowe said he was inspired by the comeback of George Foreman, who won a heavyweight title at age 45. But the comebacks of aging champions don't always go so well. Think of Muhammad Ali, at 38 and two years after retirement, taking punishment round after round from Larry Holmes. There was onetime heavyweight champion Greg Page coming back and nearly losing his life for a few thousand dollars. Heavyweight great Joe Louis paid dearly for his attempt to come back at an advanced age.

Bowe escaped without serious injury and made $150,000 for his Muay Thai debut, organized by Thai promoters trying to increase the international appeal of Thailand's national sport. The money is a far cry from the millions he earned by beating Evander Holyfield in 1992 to become the undisputed heavyweight champion.

In his heyday, Bowe fought on boxing's grandest stages in Las Vegas and New York.

His return to fighting took place at an outdoor ring set up beside the beach in Pattaya, a Thai town best known for its sprawling seaside red-light district.

Surveying the scene before the fight started, Bowe shook his head sadly.

"I should be moving up, but I'm moving backwards here," he said.

His fight was one of a dozen at the venue, which had the atmosphere of a village fairground with loud music and amusement park rides nearby. Promoters had said they hoped to draw about 20,000 people, but a crowd closer to 1,000 turned up even though admission was free.

On a sweltering night, Bowe sat and sweated for hours as he waited his turn to fight. The venue had no changing rooms, so Bowe and other fighters stripped down and changed in open air tents beside the stage.

"I've never seen anything like this," Bowe said, his spirits lifted by fans who came up to ask for autographs and wish him luck.

One American fan stared in awe at Bowe.

"He was such an underrated and great champion," said Jerry Mathison, a former fighter turned songwriter who lives in Thailand. "I can't believe he's here, in Pattaya."

In some ways, Friday's fight is the latest bizarre episode for Bowe, whose life in and out of the ring was marked by drama.

One of his three fights against Holyfield was interrupted by a parachutist who landed beside the ring. A fight against Andrew Golota in 1996 set off a riot in the ring at Madison Square Garden. Bowe left boxing later in 1996 at 29 for a career in the U.S. Marines, but that lasted only a few days. He then served 17 months in prison for interstate domestic violence after going to North Carolina to haul his now-former wife and their five children back home to Maryland.

Despite his loss, Bowe was optimistic before limping away into a car.

"Hey, we're going to do this again. I'll be back soon," he said. "I'm not a quitter. I want to do it until I get it right."

Bowe's opponent shook his head in disbelief when told the aging boxer plans to return to Muay Thai.

"It would be a big mistake. It's not for him," said Golovin, a trim and fit 220 pounds. "He's too slow and a bit too old."

"To clone aby finding intact cells and, more importantly, an intact genome is going to be exceptionally difficult, likely impossible," said Love Daln, a paleogeneticist at the Swedish Museum of Natural History. "Finding this mammoth makes it slightly less impossible."

Daln is referring to the amazinglyfound recently in the icy tundra on an island off the coast of Siberia. Some of the tissue was locked beneath the ice, and when researchers struck it with a pick, blood came flowing out, they said. []

Even tissue that looks as juicy and fresh as a steak, however, can be damaged on the cellular level. That would mean very little useful DNA (the molecules that carry the instructions for life), could be extracted, the researchers said.

Stunning find

Outside researchers haven't examined the tissue and blood that was reportedly preserved in this 10,000-year-old mammoth. but Daln's conversations with the research team suggest the fossilized beast is in incredibly good shape, he said.

"Every mammoth that has ever been found it's either its bones or dried tissue and skin or pieces of hair, so to find a piece of frozen mammoth that's so well preserved that there's blood inside is pretty amazing," Daln said. "From a DNA standpoint, it might be the most well-preserved specimen ever found."

Holy Grail

Because flash freezing could preserve the cells, and possibly their genetic information, everyone in the field is searching for the Holy Grail: a mammoth that fell into a frozen lake, which then immediately froze overnight and stayed perennially frozen for 10,000 years, said Hendrik Poinar, an evolutionary geneticist at McMaster University in Canada.

The chances of finding such a perfect specimen are incredibly slim, Poinar said.

Even if a mammoth were buried in ice at the time of discovery, it wouldnt be clear how many times the fossil had thawed and refrozen over the millennia, he added.

Pasthave looked very good on the outside even shooting out what initially looked like blood only to later be found to have heavily damaged cells that contain unusable DNA.

"When you take [samples] back to the lab, you realize that they're pretty heavily degraded," Poinar told LiveScience.

For cloning, intact DNA is needed, as the process requires replacing the DNA in an elephant egg with a mammoth's genome, then gestating the egg inside an elephant.

But time and harsh weather conditions inexorably degrade DNA, splitting it up into millions of tiny snippets that are extremely difficult to piece together. For instance, a 2012 study found that in bone, half of the chemicalwithin 521 years after death, and the genetic material degrades completely by 6.8 million years.

Elephant in disguise?

If the white blood cells or more likely, tissues from the recently discovered mammoth are in fairly good condition, then there may be longer intact DNA snippets, which should be easier to piece together, Poinar said.

Either way, the mammoth genome would probably be reconstructed by using the elephant genome as the blueprint.

By comparing genomes, researchers would try to identify the key genes that create distinctive traits such as body size, the tusks and shaggy coats of the extinct creatures and tack those in to the elephant genome, Poinar said.

Cloning based on that blueprint may result in a rather odd creature: something that looked, on the outside, like a mammoth, but was basically an elephant in disguise.

Isa worthy endeavor for science? "I hope the science moves slow enough in this case that we can actually have that discussion," Poinar said.

ARDMORE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - Amateurs Pan Cheng-tsung of Taiwan and South Korea-born Michael Kim kept the flag flying high for Asia with stunning performances in difficult conditions at the U.S. Open on Friday.

Pan birdied two of his first nine holes to lie joint third at level par midway through the weather-delayed second round while Kim was a further stroke back, after covering his first 11 holes in two under.

Both players will aim to stay in contention for the year's second major championship when they return to Merion Golf Club's challenging East Course on Saturday to resume at 7:15 a.m. EDT.

"I'm really happy with my performance," Pan, 21, told reporters after covering the outward nine in two-under during a round where the average score in the 155-strong field was almost five over par.

"Two under, that's a good score for me and I'm very satisfied with my performance this afternoon. But it's still early in the tournament. Two more days, and I've got 45 holes to go."

Asked if he felt any pressure challenging for the major widely regarded as the most grueling to win, Pan replied: "Actually I'm very excited to see my name on the leaderboard.

"The reason I don't feel pressure is because the holes are hard and I am just trying every shot hard."

OLYMPIC OPEN DEBUT

Pan is making his second appearance in a U.S. Open, having missed the cut in last year's championship at the brutally difficult Olympic Club outside San Francisco, and he relishes the major environment.

"This atmosphere here is great," said the Taiwanese, who at the age of 15 in 2007 became the youngest player to reach the quarter-finals of the U.S. Amateur since Bobby Jones.

"I came to the U.S. Open 2011 and I just fell in love with this kind of atmosphere. I feel I belong to that kind of place.

"I'm not saying I'm good enough, but I love this kind of feeling and the competition is great. I just want to be here always."

Kim, who earned a U.S. Open spot for the first time after making two birdies in his last three holes in sectional qualifying, made a promising start to Friday's second round after teeing off at the par-four 11th.

He offset a bogey at the par-four 14th with a birdie on 16 to cover Merion's difficult closing stretch in level par, then edged up the leaderboard with further birdies at the first and second before play was suspended for the day in fading light.

"I got off to a pretty solid start, parred the first few holes and I definitely could have made birdie on all of them," the 19-year-old said.

"And then I hit a poor drive on 14 and made a bogey.

"But I made a really good birdie on 16, and kind of came back. I just tried to get through that 14-through-18 stretch in even par, because then you're making up shots on the field."

Asked what his expectations were heading into the weekend on a layout known for its thick rough and narrow fairways and now running faster and firmer, Kim replied: "I'm not sure.

"Trying not to think about it too much. Low expectations and whatever happens, happens tomorrow."

Antonis Samaras' remarks Friday came just a week shy of his first anniversary in office. His fragile three-party coalition formed to save debt-stifled Greece from bankruptcy is now flirting with the political instability that has forced three changes of government in as many years.

Simmering disagreements came to a head with Samaras' surprise decision Tuesday to close Hellenic Broadcasting Corp., or ERT, with the loss of 2,656 jobs. Announced in the name of cost-cutting imposed by the country's bailout creditors, the closure has been condemned in Greece and abroad as a blow to media freedoms.

Early Friday, the head of Europe's public broadcasters arrived in Athens to show support for ERT staff and demand the government put it back on the air.

The European Broadcasting Union has helped sacked ERT workers maintain online and satellite broadcasts in defiance of the government.

Samaras wants to reopen a streamlined version of ERT from scratch in coming months, and insisted Friday his two center-left minority partners abandon efforts to keep the broadcaster alive.

In proposals to Socialist PASOK and the Democratic Left, Samaras urged support for a plan to replace ERT with a new company, while in the meantime "a small number" of workers are hired to restart news broadcasts "straight away."

"I expect a similar responsible position from the (other two) political leaders," he said in a written statement. "That will allow our cooperation to proceed unhindered and the positive course of the economy to continue, and will prevent adventures for our people."

But a Democratic Left spokesman said his party had rejected similar proposals hours earlier.

"Mr. Samaras is clearly exerting pressure, with the aim of shifting the blame onto his coalition partners," Gerassimos Georgatos told the Associated Press. "But he bears the exclusive responsibility, with his surprise move (to close ERT down)."

A PASOK statement also dismissed the prime minister's proposal. Both minority partners want Samaras to rescind the decree closing ERT, and fully reopen it pending a waste-cutting overhaul.

The three party leaders are due to meet Monday.

A poll published Friday indicated that 65 percent of Greeks are against ERT's closure, compared to 27 percent who back the move, and some 86 percent said they are dissatisfied with the government. The VPRC poll for Greece's TVXS news website gave a 3.1 percent margin of error.

It indicated that while the main opposition Radical Left, or Syriza party is slightly ahead of Samaras' conservatives in popularity, but both lack the necessary support to govern alone.

ERT's shutdown has drawn growing international criticism, including from Europe's top human rights official.

And EU parliament president Martin Schulz also urged Greece to allow ERT to broadcast with government permission, describing the closure as a threat to Europeans' right to "the freedom and pluralism in the media."

Jean-Paul Philippot, president of the Switzerland-based European Broadcasting Union, met Friday with Greece's Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras to hand him a petition signed by 51 European broadcast executives calling for the broadcaster's signal to be restored immediately.

Signatories include the directors of Britain's BBC, Germany's ZDF and French Television.

"We are here because it's never happened in Europe. Since the EBU was created (in 1950) no government has cut the signal of a broadcaster," Philippot told reporters at a recording studio in the occupied ERT building, about 10 kilometers (six miles) north of central Athens.

"This undemocratic and unprofessional action of the Greek government undermines the existence of public service media in Greece and its independence from the government," the EBU letter said.

"We strongly urge the Greek prime minister to immediately reverse this decision."

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved a genetic test from Roche to help doctors identify patients who can benefit from a lung cancer drug made by the company's Genentech unit.

The diagnostic test is the first approved to detect genetic mutations found in roughly 10 percent of patients with the most prevalent form of lung cancer, known as non-small cell lung cancer.

Patients who test positive for the mutation are more likely to respond to Genentech's drug Tarceva as a first-choice treatment, and the FDA said it expanded the drug's approval for that use in its announcement. The drug was originally approved in 2004 as a second-line option after patients failed to respond to chemotherapy.

Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer among men and women in the U.S. and is expected to kill nearly 160,000 people this year, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Company studies found that patients with the genetic mutation detected by Roche's test lived more than 10 months without their disease progressing, when treated with Tarceva. That compared to more than five months for patients taking a standard chemotherapy drug combination.

"The approval of the cobas EGFR Mutation Test will allow physicians to identify non-small cell lung cancer patients who are candidates for receiving Tarceva as first line therapy," said Alberto Gutierrez, director of the FDA's office for diagnostics, in a statement. "Companion diagnostics play an important role in determining which therapies are the safest and most effective for a particular patient.

The test approved by the FDA is one of a number of "cobas" diagnostics developed by Roche.
