The Lions, who lost the second test 16-15, have decamped to Noosa, the balmy, sun-bathed resort north of Brisbane for a three-day retreat and training camp before they face the Wallabies in Sydney on Saturday.

Pictures of the players frolicking in Noosa's sub-tropical waters on Sunday were posted on their official website and Woodward said he felt it was not the proper way to prepare.

"Players are hardly capable of walking up stairs properly on the morning after a game, so to sit on a coach, then in cramped economy seats, then back on a coach would only worsen the stiffness and swelling," Woodward huffed in his column in Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.

"These guys are battered and bruised but you do not need to fly to Noosa to get some rest and rehabilitation. It is the last place I would take the team.

"You have to lick your wounds and feel sorry for yourself for 24 hours and then get to Sydney to prepare for the biggest match of your lives."

Lions captain Sam Warburton was left behind in Melbourne to have scans on a hamstring injury and Woodward said the rest of the team should have done the same and made just one flight to Sydney on Monday.

"The Lions needed a lie-in and a full day in the team hotel with the world-class recovery facilities that were on their doorstep in Melbourne," he added.

The Lions had a scheduled day off on Monday, though it did not stop their head of communications welcoming the possibility of further sunshine.

"DAY OFF!!!! Lions sleeping Sun threatening to come out in Noosa," the tweet from Greg Thomas read.

Australia coach Robbie Deans, however, took his side directly to Sydney where the team were to have a recovery session in the markedly chillier waters off Coogee beach on Monday, some 1,100 kilometres (680 miles) to the south.

The Wallabies decision to head straight to Sydney would help them gel their combinations, Woodward added, and boost confidence after what he regarded an unimpressive performance at Melbourne's Docklands Stadium.

"If you take away the emotion it was a very poor match," the 2003 World Cup-winning coach added. "I have never seen an Australian team lose the ball so often in contact.

"The ambition was there but the execution was not and the reason for that was the defence and breakdown commitment from Sam Warburton and his pack.

"When Warburton limped off and the Wallabies strung more than three phases together they scored the winning try.

"This means that if the Lions are going to win the series then they have to return to their strength and that is power."

The Lions won the first game in Brisbane 23-21 and need to win the final match at Sydney's Olympic Stadium on Saturday to clinch their first series victory since they beat South Africa in 1997.

Mind reading

Reading people's minds doesn't always require technology. New York psychologist Marc Salem can decipher a person's thoughts using the tiny physical cues in a person's body language. "A scratch of the nose can mean you're lying, or it can mean that your nose itches," Salem told LiveScience. When he's trying to read someone's mind, he looks for what he calls a "packet of signals" that tells him what a gesture means. The show follows Salem as he guesses the cards of professional poker players a seemingly impossible feat. To do it, Salem relies on context. "I'm able to pick up their nonverbal inflections and cues," he said. "The more I have a context for them, the more I can pick them up."

Of course, technology can give scientists even more direct access to . Inventor and neurotechnologist Philip Low is developing a portable brain monitor calledthat can detect the brain's electrical activity from the surface of the scalp, Freeman explains. People with Lou Gehrig's disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or other forms of paralysis still have healthy brain activity. Using the iBrain, they could use thoughts to control a virtual hand on a computer screen.

The show later delves into even more sophisticated forms of mind reading. "Some neuroscientists are already translating the language of the brain to plain English," Freeman says. Neuroscientist Jack Gallant at the University of California, Berkeley is compiling a "brain dictionary" toand words. Gallant and his colleagues showed people different images while measuring their brain activity via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). From the brain activity, Gallant's team can reconstruct the approximate images people saw. The scientists are also developing a dictionary of concepts that allows them to guess what people are thinking about the images they're seeing.

Mental modification

But these technologies are already raising ethical issues. "We don't know how fast the technology's going to progress," Gallant says. Freeman goes on to explore an even more startling possibility: If thoughts can be decoded, could they also be altered?

For example, imagine if you could turn an amateur into an expert in a single day. This is the mission of neuroscientist and entrepreneur Chris Berka. Athletes, performers or other experts can tap into a state of extreme mental focus, called being "in the zone." The zone state (which amateurs can achieve too) has a particular signature in the brain activity. The neurotech company Berka runs is developing technology to monitor people's brain activity during a task, such as archery, and notify them when they have reached their "peak performance state," aka, the zone. Essentially, the technology gives people the ability to hack into their own brains in order to improve their performance. []

But what if other people couldand plant thoughts there? Computer programmers break into secure systems using "cracks," Freeman says. In humans, sense of smell could be a crack for the brain. Ilana Hairston, a psychologist at The Academic College of Tel-Aviv Yaffo in Israel, uses smell to plant information in . She trains snoozing people to associate certain pleasant or foul odors with particular sounds. The notion sounds like sci-fi, but it relies on a brain pathway that allows senses like smell to enter the brain without conscious awareness.

On the show, Freeman explores all of these mind-probing efforts with his characteristic gravitas. Many of the methods described aim to restore or improve human abilities. But some imply a future that is spooky indeed.

China, which is increasingly looking to Africa for oil and other natural resources, is offering Nigeria loans to help fund airport terminals in four cities, roads, a light-rail line for its capital, a hydropower plant and oil and gas infrastructure.

Xi said both countries had been brought together by a common task of pursuing national development. "As a proverb of Nigeria reads, 'A man cannot sit down alone to plan for prosperity,'" he said.

Jonathan, on a four-day trip to China, has brought along about a dozen of his Cabinet ministers including those for petroleum resources, trade and transport, as well as several state governors, senior government officials and businesspeople.

Following a meeting between Xi and Jonathan, representatives from both countries signed five deals, including a lending agreement between China's Import-Export Bank and the Nigerian finance ministry for the expansion of the airport terminals and an economic and technical cooperation pact. Details of the agreements were not immediately available.

Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says the loans being finalized during this trip are part of $3 billion approved by China at interest rates of less than 3 percent.

Chinese companies are already building roads across Nigeria in contracts worth $1.7 billion.

China's demand for crude oil produced in Nigeria is expected to rise tenfold to 200,000 barrels a day by 2015, according to information provided by a team accompanying the Nigerian president.

Zhang Chun, an expert on Africa at the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Studies, said Nigeria is important to China because it has the largest economy in west Africa and because it has oil. "There is great potential for developing cooperation in this field," he said.

On Thursday, Jonathan will meet Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and representatives of companies including state oil company Sinopec and telecom equipment makers Huawei and ZTE.

It said there have been 13 confirmed cases of the H5N1 bird flu virus among humans in Cambodia this year, and 34 since 2005. Bird flu has killed 376 people worldwide since surfacing in 2003, according to the World Health Organization. This year, there have been 20 cases worldwide through June 4, 15 of them fatal, WHO said.

The ministry said the girl came from a village in southern Kampot province, where she was likely to have been exposed to infected poultry. She was treated but died last Friday. The H5N1 virus normally spreads among poultry, but can sometimes spread from poultry to humans.

Of Cambodia's 34 confirmed cases, 23 were children under 14, and 21 of the 34 were female, the ministry said.

"Avian influenza H5N1 remains a serious threat to the health of all Cambodians," Health Minister Mam Bunheng said in a statement. "Children also seem to be most vulnerable and are at high risk because they like to play where poultry are found."

Abandoning his suit jacket under a sweltering sun at Georgetown University, Obama issued a dire warning about the environment: Temperatures are rising, sea level is climbing, the Arctic ice is melting and the world is doing far too little to stop it. Obama said the price for inaction includes lost lives and homes and hundreds of billions of dollars.

"As a president, as a father and as an American, I'm here to say we need to act," Obama said. "I refuse to condemn your generation and future generations to a planet that's beyond fixing."

At the core of Obama's plan are new controls on new and existing power plants that emit carbon dioxide heat-trapping gases blamed for global warming. The program also will boost renewable energy production on federal lands, increase efficiency standards and prepare communities to deal with higher temperatures. Obama called for the U.S. to be a global leader in the search for solutions.

But Obama's campaign will face extensive obstacles, including a complicated, lengthy process of implementation and the likelihood that the limits on power plants will be challenged in court. Likewise, the instantaneous political opposition that met his plan made clear the difficulty the president will face in seeking broad support.

"There will be legal challenges. No question about that," former EPA Administrator Christie Whitman said in an interview. "It's a program that's largely executive. He doesn't need Congress. What that does, of course, is make them (Congress) madder."

Obama also offered a rare insight into his deliberations on whether to approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline, deeming it in America's interests only if it doesn't worsen carbon pollution. Obama has faced intense political pressure from supporters and opponents of the 1,200-mile pipeline from Canada to Texas.

Declaring the scientific debate over climate change and its causes obsolete, Obama mocked those who deny that humans are contributing to the warming of the planet.

"We don't have time for a meeting of the flat-earth society," Obama said.

Obama's announcement followed years of inaction by Congress to combat climate change. A first-term effort by Obama to use a market-based approach called cap-and-trade to lower emissions failed, and in February a newly re-elected Obama issued lawmakers an ultimatum in his State of the Union: "If Congress won't act soon to protect future generations, I will."

Four months later, impatient environmental activists reveled in the news that Obama was finally taking matters into his own hands, announcing a series of steps that don't require congressional approval.

"This is the change we have been waiting for," said Michael Brune, who runs the Sierra Club, an environmental group. "Today, President Obama has shown he is keeping his word to future generations."

Republicans on both sides of the Capitol dubbed Obama's plan a continuation of his "war on coal" and "war on jobs." The National Association of Manufacturers claimed Obama's proposals would drive up costs. Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito of the coal-heavy state of West Virginia slammed what she called Obama's "tyrannical efforts to bankrupt the coal industry."

"The federal government should leave us the hell alone," said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, whose agency handles Texas' environment and energy markets.

Even industry groups that have been friendly to Obama and supportive of his climate goals, such as the Edison Electric Institute, which represents power plants, signaled their apprehension by calling for "achievable compliance limits and deadlines."

Obama said the same arguments have been used in the past when the U.S. has taken other steps to protect the environment.

"That's what they said every time," Obama said. "And every time, they've been wrong."

Obama broke his relative silence on Keystone XL, explicitly linking the project to global warming for the first time in a clear overture to environmental activists who want the pipeline nixed. The pipeline would carry carbon-intensive oil from Canadian tar sands to the Texas Gulf Coast refineries and has sparked an intense partisan fight.

"Our national interest would be served only if this project does not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution," Obama said.

The White House indicated Obama was referring to overall, net emissions that take into account what would happen under alternative scenarios. A State Department report this year said other methods to transport the oil like shipping it on trains could yield even higher emissions.

"The standard the president set today should lead to speedy approval of the Keystone pipeline," said Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Announcing he will allow more renewable energy projects on public lands, Obama set a goal to power the equivalent of 6 million homes by 2020 from sources like wind and solar, effectively doubling the current capacity. The set of actions also includes a new set of fuel efficiency standards for heavy-duty trucks, more aggressive efficiency targets for buildings and appliances, and $8 billion in federal loan guarantees to spur innovation.

By far the most sweeping element and the one likely to cause the most consternation is new limits on carbon dioxide pollution from power plants.

The administration has already proposed rules for new coal-fired plants, but they have been delayed amid industry concerns about the cost. A presidential memorandum Obama issued Tuesday directs the EPA to revise and reissue the new plant rules by September, then finalize them "in a timely fashion."

The key prize for environmental groups comes in Obama's instruction that the EPA propose rules for the nation's existing plants by June 2014, then finalize them by June 2015 and implement them by June 2016 just as the presidential campaign to replace Obama will be in full swing.

Rather than issue a specific, uniform standard that plants must meet, the EPA will work with states, power sector leaders and other parties to develop plans that meet the needs of individual states and also achieve the objective of reducing emissions.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares tumbled on Monday as strong U.S. jobs growth increased the chances of the Federal Reserve rolling back its stimulus in coming months, sending the dollar to a three-year high against a basket of major currencies.

Chinese stocks and regional sentiment were hurt by Beijing's plan to choke off credit to force consolidation in industries plagued by overcapacity as it seeks to end the economy's reliance on investment funded by cheap debt.

European shares were expected to open higher, however, with Britain's FTSE 100 seen trading up as much as 1 percent and Germany's DAX up as much as 0.7 percent, according to spreadbetters.

U.S. employers added 195,000 new jobs to their payrolls last month, beating expectations of 165,000. Adding to the positive sentiment, the figures for April and May were revised up by a combined 70,000. The unemployment rate held steady at 7.6 percent as more people entered the workforce.

Friday's sharp selloff in U.S. Treasuries - with the 10-year yield suffering its biggest one-day rise in nearly two years, Reuters data showed - accelerated losses that started in May over the uncertainty of the Fed's $85 billion a month bond-buying programme.

Yields on 10-year U.S. Treasuries, which move opposite to price, were at 2.6924 percent, turning lower after climbing to a nearly two-year high of 2.755 percent in Asian trade. They jumped 23.3 basis points to 2.736 percent on Friday, driving up U.S. dollar borrowing costs.

"The money in the market is very short term right now. Most investors have given up hope for any stimulus from Beijing, but now it seems they could be rolling out stricter ground rules to aid the restructuring of the economy," said Jackson Wong, vice-president for equity sales at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong.

MANIC MONDAY

Shares in MSCI's Asia-Pacific ex-Japan index shed 1.8 percent to a two-week low, while Chinese equities lost 2.2 percent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped 2.1 percent.

China's resolve to overhaul its economy for long-term improvement will be tested this month if a slew of data shows growth is grinding towards a 23-year low, as expected.

The median forecast of 21 economists surveyed by Reuters show China's economy likely expanded 7.5 percent in April-June from a year ago, slowing from the previous three months as weak demand dented factory output and investment growth.

The CSI300 index has lost nearly 14 percent so far this year, while the MSCI Asian gauge is down 10 percent.

The weakness in Chinese markets dragged Tokyo's Nikkei average down 1.4 percent. Earlier, the Japanese benchmark climbed as much as 1.3 percent to a six-week high.

"I don't think it's negative for Japan," said a hedge fund manager, who declined to be identified, referring to higher dollar borrowing costs.

"For ASEAN countries, it is more of a concern if rates continue to go up. A lot of the funding for some of these countries is dollar-denominated."

The selloff in Treasuries also hurt Japanese government bonds on Monday, with the 10-year yield up 2.5 basis points to 0.880 percent.

DOLLAR HIGH

The dollar hit a six-week high of 101.54 yen after gaining 1.2 percent on Friday, its biggest one-day rise in a month.

"The dollar looks likely to gain further. But then again, if Chinese shares face more pressures, we could see a bigger dip in the dollar/yen," said Koichi Takamatsu, forex manager at Nomura Securities in Tokyo.

Against a basket of major currencies, the dollar advanced 1.6 percent to a three-year high.

The euro dipped 0.1 percent to $1.2820, not far off a seven-week low of $1.2806. It dropped 1.4 percent versus the dollar in the previous two sessions on the U.S. jobs data and the European Central Bank's dovish policy guidance.

Brent crude prices added 0.3 percent to $108 a barrel, extending Friday's 2.1 percent rise on the strong U.S. data and concerns over Egypt's unrest increasing instability in the Middle East.

Copper prices eased 0.2 percent to stay below $6,800 a tonne after shedding 2.3 percent in the previous session as the dollar firmed, while gold eased 0.2 percent, extending Friday's 2 percent decline.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Delays in approval of more natural gas export projects are costing U.S. companies millions of dollars a day and giving a leg up to rival countries also looking to boost exports, the chief of Exxon Mobil Corpsaid on Thursday.

The comments by Exxon's Rex Tillerson came hours after new U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz told lawmakers he hopes to "expeditiously" begin evaluating the more than a dozen applications awaiting approval to export liquefied natural gas (LNG).

"It's a very competitive marketplace. It's not like people are just going to stand at our door like panting dogs just waiting for us to give this (LNG) to them," Tillerson said while answering questions after an event at the Asia Society focused on Asian energy security.

Tillerson said he left a meeting with Moniz on Wednesday with no clear idea of when the company's Golden Pass LNG project - a $10 billion joint venture with Qatar Petroleum - would be approved.

"I don't want to start on this process if you tell me it's going to take five years for you to get around to my application," Tillerson said.

U.S. companies need authorization from the Department of Energy to export gas to all but a handful of countries with free trade agreements. Japan and India are among the countries keen to gain access to U.S. supplies.

The Energy Department ended a two-year freeze in reviewing liquefied natural gas (LNG) export applications in May, when it approved gas exports to all countries from Freeport LNG's terminal in Texas.

Shortly after that move Moniz, who was sworn in on May 21, said he would undertake a thorough review of the gas export review process, promising to ensure that current data was being used to make these decisions.

At his first appearance at a Congressional panel since his swearing-in, Moniz told lawmakers at a House Energy and Commerce committee hearing on Thursday the review should wrap up soon.

"We're getting ready to begin evaluating the dockets on a case-by-case basis," Moniz said. There would "absolutely" be additional decisions this year, he added, without giving a more specific time frame.

Companies have lined up to export excess gas produced from the nation's shale boom. The gas can fetch higher prices abroad.

Other backers of proposed export projects include Dominion Resources Inc , Sempra Energy , BG Group Plcand Veresen Inc .

Some lawmakers and a group of manufacturers led by Dow Chemical Co , have called on the department to be cautious, arguing that unfettered exports could harm the U.S. economy by raising the price of gas at home.

This week, the league's newest players are taking a crash course in all that goes into being a professional athlete at the Rookie Symposium. The players are taking part in panel discussions on a variety of topics, including health and safety, non-discrimination, domestic and family life and drug awareness. The league invited several former and current players to share their stories of success and failure.

On Monday, Cincinnati cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones spoke to the players about his off-field struggles. Jones recently pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge and has had other issues that led to suspensions.

San Diego linebacker Manti Te'o said the lesson he learned from Jones' speech "was to never give up."

The players took a break on Tuesday and instructed some area kids in football drills.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Islamic-rooted government has been watching developments in Egypt with concern as the armed forces ousted Morsi, an Islamist and Egypt's first democratically elected president.

Turkey last month was hit by a wave of protests against Erdogan's perceived authoritarianism and his attempts to impose his conservative views in a society that is ruled by secular laws. Morsi's removal follows protests by Egyptians angry over what they see as his efforts to impose control through the Muslim Brotherhood and his failures to deal with the country's multiple problems.

Erdogan's government has an aversion to military intervention in politics and since coming to power a decade ago, has curtailed the powers of the pro-secular Turkish military, which has staged three coups between 1960 and 1980 and forced an Islamic-led government out of office in 1997.

Last year, some 300 military officers were convicted for an alleged plot to topple Erdogan's government. Their case is being appealed.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in a televised statement that Morsi was deposed illegally through a "military coup" and said democratically elected leaders should only be ousted through elections.

Underscoring the importance he attached to ties with Egypt, Davutoglu said he had cut short a visit to Asia to return to Turkey for consultations with Erdogan on developments.

"The toppling of a government that came into office through democratic elections, through methods that are not legal and what is worse, through a military coup is unacceptable, no matter what the reasons," Davutoglu said.

"It is important from the point of view of a national consensus that (leaders) who have been arrested are immediately released," he said.

Davutoglu also called for the start of the election process so that power in Egypt is immediately returned to "elected authorities."

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood group had long viewed Erdogan's government as an Islamist success story, mixing a strong economy with Western ties and Islamic piety and the two had been working toward strengthening ties. Last year, Turkey pledged $2 billion in aid to boost confidence in Egypt's economy that was battered by a tourism slump, strikes and protests since the fall of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak in an uprising in 2011.

Earlier, Turkey's all-party parliamentary human rights commission also denounced Morsi's ouster while small protests were held in Ankara and Istanbul.

A new analysis from the World Meteorological Organization says average land and ocean surface temperatures from 2001 to 2010 rose above the previous decade, and were almost a half-degree Celsius above the 1961-1990 global average.

The decade ending in 2010 was an unprecedented era of climate extremes, the agency said, evidenced by heat waves in Europe and Russia, droughts in the Amazon Basin, Australia and East Africa, and huge storms like Tropical Cyclone Nargis and Hurricane Katrina.

Data from 139 nations show that droughts like those in Australia, East Africa and the Amazon Basin affected the most people worldwide. But it was the hugely destructive and deadly floods such as those in Pakistan, Australia, Africa, India and Eastern Europe that were the most frequent extreme weather events.

Experts say a decade is about the minimum length of time to study when it comes to spotting climate change.

From 1971 to 2010, global temperatures rose by an average rate of 0.17 degrees Celsius per decade. But going back to 1880, the average increase was .062 percent degrees Celsius per decade.

The pace also picked up in recent decades. Average temperatures were 0.21 degrees Celsius warmer this past decade than from 1991 to 2000, which were in turn 0.14 degrees Celsius warmer than from 1981 to 1990.

Natural cycles between atmosphere and oceans make some years cooler than others, but during the past decade there was no major event associated with El Nino, the phenomenon characterized by unusually warm temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Much of the decade was affected by the cooling La Nina, which comes from unusually cool temperatures there, or neutral conditions.

Given those circumstances, WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud says the data doesn't support the notion among some in the scientific community of a slowdown, or lull, in the pace of planetary warming in recent years.

"The last decade was the warmest, by a significant margin," he said. "If anything we should not talk about the plateau, we should talk about the acceleration."

Jarraud says the data show warming accelerated between 1971 and 2010, with the past two decades increasing at rates never seen before amid rising concentrations of industrial gases that trap heat in the atmosphere like a greenhouse.

By the end of 2010, the report shows, atmospheric concentrations of some of the chief warming gases from fossil fuel burning and other human actions were far higher than at the start of the industrial era in 1750. Carbon dioxide concentrations measured in the air around the world rose 39 percent since then; methane rose 158 percent; and nitrous oxide was up 20 percent.
