Today, I left my daughter with my husband and went to Minami for a massage, which I had been planning for the last few weeks.

But this time next year, a simple blood test that offers accurate result for Down Syndrome very early in pregnancy will be available.

The new test will enable women to know the result earlier in a pregnancy, so there is concern that it could encourage women to decide to abort the pregnancy.

In the latter part of the article, a woman who gave birth to a Down Syndrome baby, knowing the result of the test, was introduced.

As her doctor gave her the news, her baby kicked and "I could see my belly move," she recalled.

She gave birth to Grady in February 2010.

"When they first gave him to me, I saw tiny little hands and he had the most beautiful eyes. He didn't have'Down Syndrome' stamped on his forehead. He cried and he peed, and he pooped. He was a baby."

After reading her comment, I cried.

I'm also a mother who got through the labor and I can clealy remember the emotional moment when I first saw my baby.

I pledged myself to protect her, holding her in my arm for the first time.

It was the best moment I'd ever had.

I was really happy to see my baby in health.

I wonder, however, whether I had been able to continue the pregnancy if I had known I was having a baby with anything unusual.

I'm weak.

My priority would be my own life.

That's why I respect the woman. She must have worried for a long time before she made the dicision to give birth, devoting her own life to her baby.

その記事のひとつに、すごく考えさせられました。

それは、ダウン症の早期発見についてのもの。

母親が妊娠中に、お腹の子供がダウン症かどうかを判定することができるのですが、

従来の検査方法は、妊娠がかなり進んでからお腹に針を刺して調べるものだったので、

流産のリスクを伴っていました。

でも、来年には、妊娠の初期段階で母親の血液検査により、

判定ができるようになるのだそう。

早い段階で分かってしまう、ということが、中絶を助長するのではないか、

という懸念があるとのことでした。

その記事の最後の方に、

検査でお腹の子供がダウン症であるとわかって、出産した方の言葉がありました。

ダウン症であると医者が彼女に告げたとき、赤ちゃんは彼女のお腹を蹴り、そして彼女は、お腹の赤ちゃんが動いたのが分かったという。

彼女は、2010年の2月に、Grady君を出産した。

彼女は言う。「初めて彼を手渡されたとき、ちっちゃなおててに、とびっきりキレイな目をしているのがわかりました。彼のおでこに「ダウン症です」なんて印はなかった。彼は泣き、おしっこしてうんちをしました。彼は赤ちゃんだったのよ。」

私は弱い。

自分の人生も、大切。

だから、いっぱい悩んだに違いないのに、

わかっていながら産むという選択をした彼女が本当にすごいと思った。

今、二人目を考えている私だから、人事とは思えなかった。
