Paolini, who rides for Katusha, broke away toward the end of the final descent to complete the 222-kilometre leg from Sorrento to Marina di Ascea in five hours 43 minutes 50 seconds.

Cadel Evans beat Canadian defending champion Ryder Hesjedal in a bunch sprint for second place, with both finishing 16 seconds behind. Overall favourite Bradley Wiggins finished eighth on the stage and is second in the general standings, 17 seconds behind Paolini. Main rival Vincenzo Nibali is fifth, 14 seconds further back.

Paolini timed his break to perfection on the descent of the Sella Di Catona, attacking 6.5 kilometres (four miles) from the finish.

Hesjedal attacked several times on the second and final classified climb but could not build up enough of an advantage and was caught each time. The Victoria native's third-place finish moved him into seventh in the overall classification, 34 seconds behind Paolini.

The third stage took the peleton along the picturesque Amalfi coast, and featured an early breakaway by seven riders who built up a lead of more than seven minutes at the midway point.

But the Sky riders, who won the team trial in the second stage on Sunday, was in control of the peleton and the gap slowly began to shrink as they approached the start of the first climb of the day, up the San Mauro Cilento. At the summit, the leaders had an advantage of just over four minutes.

Fabio Taborre made a solo break away from the leading group with 50 kilometres to go, but the peloton again picked up the pace and swallowed up the chasers before catching the Italian.

Hesjedal then attacked with 25 kilometres remaining, was caught and broke again together with Valerio Agnoli and Paolini.

The group was again back together 14 kilometres from the finish before Paolini's attack on the final part of the twisting descent to the finish.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA (Reuters) - Roberto Castro proved himself a sterling student as he followed up a tutorial with 2012 winner Matt Kuchar with a record-tying 63 on Thursday to take the lead at the Players Championship.

Unheralded 27-year-old Castro put his name alongside record holders Greg Norman and Fred Couples with a nine-under-par score on the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course following a practice round with fellow Georgia Tech alumnus Kuchar.

Seven birdies and an eagle propelled the red-haired nephew of former LPGA player Jenny Lidback of Peru, who held a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy and Zach Johnson with world number one Tiger Woods a further shot back.

"I played with Kuchar yesterday, which helped because obviously the guy has gone around the course and won," said Castro, a 2011 graduate of the Web.com Tour who has made just seven of 14 cuts on the PGA Tour this season.

Castro, ranked 267th, said there was no single revelation he drew from the practice session.

"Just little things here and there," he said. "It's always interesting to watch what he does around the greens, or any player that's had a lot of success.

"Where he practices his chipping from, putting from," Castro said. "And he's fun. He keeps it light out there. If my attitude would be like Kuchar's more often, it would probably be a little better."

Practicing with Kuchar and Australian Geoff Ogilvy, a former U.S. Open winner, put Castro in the right frame of mind.

"Kuchar and Geoff Ogilvy both are great players, veteran guys. Just kind of got the feel of going about their business and trying to figure out the golf course," he said.

Castro figured out a winning formula, hitting all but one fairway and using laser-like irons to set up six birdie putts within five feet, including four within two feet.

His 13-foot, downhill putt on his last hole for a record-setting 62 slid four feet past the cup.

Castro was so efficient with his irons that he did not have to attempt a single putt over 10 feet in his round.

It was not Castro's first 63 in a PGA tournament.

He posted an opening nine-under 63 at the 2013 Humana Challenge before finishing tied for 37th. A final-round seven-under 63 at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic gave him a tie for seventh for his only PGA Tour top 10.

But Thursday's record-tying round was something Castro could only imagine before putting his lessons into practice, leading a reporter to ask about the dream foursome he listed on the PGA Tour website - Bobby Jones, Tiger Woods and John Lennon.

"I was a big Beatles fan, specifically Lennon," he said. "I doubt he ever even picked up a golf club, but one of the most interesting historical figures, in my opinion."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - George Jones, a classic country singer with a voice full of raw honky-tonk emotion and a life full of honky-tonk turmoil, died on Friday at age 81, his spokesman said.

Jones, whose career spanned more than six decades and included hits such as "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and "Window Up Above," died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville.

He had been hospitalized since April 18 with fever and irregular blood pressure, spokesman Kirt Webster said.

In November 2012, Jones embarked on a farewell tour after a career that produced his first top 10 record in 1955 with "Why Baby Why."

The "Grand Tour" was to conclude in Nashville in November this year, where Jones was to be joined by some of the many stars who influenced him.

News of his death brought tributes from a number of country music's top stars.

"Heaven better get ready for George Jones. He will always be the greatest singer of real country music - there'll never be another," Alan Jackson said on Twitter.

Dolly Parton said, "My heart is absolutely broken. George Jones was my all time favorite singer and one of my favorite people in the world."

"George Jones has passed. Damn. Thought he'd live forever. Let's break out his catalogue and play it all day," said Toby Keith.

Like his idol, Hank Williams, Jones battled addiction. Alcohol and cocaine frequently derailed his career and at one point his reputation for canceling performances earned him the nickname No-Show Jones.

But when Jones did show up and was in good form, listeners were treated to a powerful and evocative voice. Jones was at his best with cry-in-your-beer songs made extra mournful by his masterful phrasing.

As his late contemporary Waylon Jennings put it, "If we could all sound like we wanted to, then we'd all sound like George Jones."

Born in Saratoga, Texas, on September 12, 1931, Jones began performing for spare change as a boy on the streets of nearby Beaumont. Under the influence of Williams, Ernest Tubb and Lefty Frizzell, he graduated to the rough roadhouses of East Texas.

Jones had an early marriage, a divorce and a stint in the Marines before his first hit, "Why Baby Why" in 1955. His first No. 1 song, "White Lightning," came in 1959, followed by "Tender Years" in 1961.

'THE POSSUM'

The next two decades brought a string of top 10 songs - "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me (Her Memory Will)," "Window Up Above," "She Thinks I Still Care," "Good Year for the Roses," "The Race Is On" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today," which Jones said was his favorite. He also had a successful run of duets early in his career with Melba Montgomery.

Jones, who was known as "The Possum," divorced his second wife in 1968 and the next year married one of country music's most popular singers, Tammy Wynette. The pairing was an enormous professional success for both as they recorded and toured together and Jones began working with Billy Sherrill, Wynette's producer.

During his time with Sherrill, Jones refined his honky-tonk voice and sang more ballads, often with the lush string accompaniment that had become a trend in the country music capital of Nashville.

The marriage to Wynette went bad as Jones' addiction problem escalated and Wynette claimed he once came at her with a gun. They divorced in 1975 but later resumed recording together. Wynette died in 1998 at age 55.

Jones continued to put out hit songs in the early 1980s, even as cocaine compounded his personal tumult. Amid a string of hospitalizations and arrests, he disappeared for days at a time, missed shows and recording sessions and took police on a drunken chase through Nashville.

Jones credited fourth wife Nancy, whom he married in 1983, with helping him clean up. But in 1999 he was seriously injured after driving drunk and crashing into a bridge, leading to another stay in rehab.

At one point Jones was so incorrigible that one of his four wives cleared the liquor from their home and hid all the car keys so he could not go for more. Jones responded by cranking up his riding lawn mower and driving it to a bar - an escapade he chronicled in "Honky Tonk Song."

Although he was heard infrequently on mainstream country radio in the later years of his career, Jones was a sought-after duet partner and won a Grammy for the song "Choices" in 1999.

He also won a Grammy for best male country vocal performance in 1980 for "He Stopped Loving Her Today," and received a lifetime achievement Grammy last year.

In preparation for a new round of Senate hearings on bipartisan legislation to overhaul the nation's immigration system, bill co-author Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is urging skeptical conservatives who oppose it to instead work to toughen measures such as border security.

Rubio, a Republican with one of the most conservative voting records in the chamberand who rose to power with support from the tea partyhas faced intense scrutiny from some conservative groups for his willingness to work with Democrats on writing the bill. On Friday, Rubiothat called on them to work with him to rework the language in the bill. If they don't work with him on the legislation, Rubio warned, they will leave immigration reform to liberal Democrats, who he argued would legalize unlawful immigrants without balancing their approach with tougher border security.

"Conservatism has always been about reforming government and solving problems, and that's why the conservative movement should lead on immigration reform," he wrote. "The immigration-reform bill in the Senate is a solid starting point for solving this problem, and I believe it can be made even better as Congress begins to actively work on it in committee next week. But defeating it without offering an alternative cannot be the conservative position on immigration reform. That would leave the issue entirely in the hands of President Obama and leave in place the disastrous status quo."

Rubio is part of a bipartisan group of eight Senate lawmakers who last month released the initial language for an immigration bill that supporters hope will pass as early as this summer.

In today's political climate, however, the conservative right seems to view deviation from a strident anti-environmental position as heresy.

In the spirit of celebrating , here are six political leaders who, despite their conservative bona-fides, were among the most influential supporters of the environment.

1. Margaret Thatcher

Trained as a chemist at Oxford University, the late British Prime Minister Thatcher may have understood the scientific underpinnings ofand other environmental issues better than most other politicians. []

"It is mankind and his activities that are changing the environment of our planet in damaging and dangerous ways," she once said, according to the . "The result is that change in future is likely to be more fundamental and more widespread than anything we have known hitherto. Change to the sea around us, change to the atmosphere above, leading in turn to change in the world's climate, which could alter the way we live in the most fundamental way of all."

She seemingly backpedaled on this position in later years, however, calling climate activism a "marvelous excuse for supra-national socialism."

2. Richard Nixon

Before he resigned in disgrace following the Watergate scandal, Nixon signed into law an almost unbelievable catalog of environmental legislation.

The National Environmental Policy Act, the , the Environmental Pesticide Control Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Endangered Species Act were all signed by or supported by Nixon, according to(MNN.com).

He also established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a cabinet-level federal department. Some question, however, whether Nixon acted out of real concern for the environment or mere political expedience: He once reportedly said that environmentalists wanted to live like "a bunch of damned animals."

3. Theodore Roosevelt

A renowned big-game hunter and lifelong Republican, Teddy Roosevelt might seem an unlikely environmentalist. But as the bully-pulpit president himself might say, actions speak louder than words.

During his presidency (1901-1909), he preserved more than 230 million acres (93 million hectares) of wilderness, created the U.S Forest Service, aggressively pursued soil and water conservation, and established more than 200 national forests, national monuments,and wildlife refuges.

As governor of New York, Roosevelt even outlawed the use of feathers in clothing like hats to prevent the slaughter of exotic birds. "The conservation of natural resources is the fundamental problem," he once said, according to the Theodore Roosevelt Association. "Unless we solve that problem, it will avail us little to solve all others."

4. Barry Goldwater

Though he was late to the eco-party, Goldwater a five-term Republican senator from Arizona and a presidential candidate in 1964 was an unabashed lover of the great outdoors, especially in Arizona with its .

"While I am a great believer in the free enterprise system and all that it entails," he once wrote, "I am an even stronger believer in the right of our people to live in a clean and pollution-free environment."

Though Goldwater initially supported the construction of Glen Canyon Dam, which destroyed the colorful gorges of Glen Canyon beneath the water of Lake Powell, he later regretted his position. Shortly before he died in 1998, Goldwater joined the Republicans for Environmental Protection (now known as ConservAmerica).

5. William Ruckelshaus

Born into a family of bedrock Indiana Republicans, Ruckelshaus served in the administrations of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. But from the beginning, he showed an abiding interest in environmental protection and was actively involved in Hoosier-state water- and air-pollution legislation.

After Nixon created the , he appointed Ruckelshaus as the organization's first administrator. Among his many achievements there, Ruckelshaus banned the use of the pesticide DDT.

Still involved in environmental causes in later life, he once reflected of his time in government, "At EPA, you work for a cause that is beyond self-interest and larger than the goals people normally pursue. You're not there for the money, you're there for something beyond yourself."

6. Sherwood Boehlert

Though his name is not a household word outside his native upstate New York, Republican Representative Boehlert was a resolute environmentalist during a time (1983-2007) when the cause simply wasn't cool, earning the moniker "Green Hornet" for his support of environmental causes.

Throughout the Reagan years, he actively campaigned for legislation to fight , protectand support higher automotive fuel standards. As chairman of the House Science Committee, Boehlert spearheaded efforts to increase investment in the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Even in retirement, Boehlert continues to fight the good green fight, and serves on the board of Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection, "something that is inconceivable now for any current Republican member of Congress," reports .

It's a term Philip Glass never liked as a term for his musical style, and the rich complexity of "The Lost," his newest opera, proves those who insist on using it just plain wrong.

Written for the new Linz opera house, where it world-premiered Friday, "The Lost" "Spuren der Verirrten" in the original German is a strangely reassuring confirmation that although mankind has gone astray we are all in the same boat; that while all we do has no sense, that rule applies to all of us.

Life; death; fame; fortune; joy; tears. All human striving in vain. It's a story that has been told many times, in word, music, song and dance."The Lost" combines all those threads and then some with magnificent result in what in some ways combines Samuel Becket's"Waiting for Godot," and Fritz Lang's "Metropolis."

Don't look for named characters. That would be too personal. Instead we have singer "A'' interacting with "B'' and so on. The fact that "A'' and "B'' are lost is clear from the very start, even as they mark the way they came.

Hansel and Gretel did that too. In vain.

Two hours later, pause included, more than a hundred people crowd the cavernously deep stage and spill into the pit where they make a show of playing imaginary instruments. The orchestra has moved onto stage. They wear funny hats and conductor Dennis Russell Davies sports a paper crown.

The music soars to a crescendo. Drums pound. All of humanity is lost, and all around is chaos. "Where are we?" they sing on the sinister, red-lit stage, knowing there will be no answer.

But a lot happens before that sonorous end, as one tableau follows the other depicting vignettes of the banality of being.

An old couple sit, both soaking their feet. "Whatever happens I will never desert you," sings one. "We've come through tougher times than these," intones the other; "Even when you sweated in fear, it smelled good" exchanges that make clear in their triteness that it is the audience all of us who are on stage.

Another couple are fighting, "Die, die," screams one before changing tack in mid-breath to suddenly sing "Let's get along again, neighbor. Peace."

Bizarre shapes populate the action.An armless man moves wormlike across the stage as his partner berates him for failing life's tests. They both die.

Another character "The Third" takes on the role of the Greek chorus loudly proclaiming the futility of it all, while "The Spectator" wonders where all the exertion is leading.

Adding to the on-stage edginess is nervous ballet choreography. The dancers jerk and move rapidly but without a sense of the purpose that a life lived well should have. The motions are mechanical. Life is mechanical.

A visual feast, compliments of director David Pountney, choreographer Amir Hosseinpour, and Anne Marie Legenstein, who created the bewildering array of delightfully bizarre costumes. Fabrice Kebour's lighting cold and dreary blues, alternating with jarring brightness were also effective.

But none of it would work without Glass's music.

Menacingly buzzing strings, roaring brass instruments and a crashing synthesizer alternate with poignantly melodic lines. Glass is boldly symphonic in one moment, softly insistent the next, weaving a harmonic tapestry that becomes part of the visual fabric on stage.

One of the world's greatest living composers, Glass shows in "The Lost" that he truly is a man for all musical seasons and his wonderful sounds are brought alive by Davis, the conductor, who leads Bruckner Orchestra with the authority and vigor that this music demands.

The soloists from "A'' to "K'' also did well, in roles that were less challenging vocally and more dramatically.

Ahead of the performance, Austrian dramatist Peter Handke, on whose play the opera is based, praised Glass'swork as "faithful" to his own while Glass described his effort as an attempt at "Gesamtkunst" the term coined by Richard Wagner meaning "Total Art."

"I call it earth, air, fire and water," he said in comments to The Associated Press of the totality of art forms that went into "The Lost." ''Movement, text, image and music those are the elements we worked with."

While not speaking German, Glass said working to Rainer Mennicken's libretto in that language was no problem because "I knew the grammar and I just plugged in the words. Beyond that, he also is drawn to Austria "because the musicians are so good."

"I used to think that the American orchestras would be my true home," he said. "But I found out that there is another element, another layer of music that you get in a Central European orchestra a depth of sound" that most American ensembles do not have.

North Carolina Central University imposed a lockdown after an attempted armed robbery at a residence hall, according to a statement issued by the school.

Officials said the suspect displayed a weapon but ran away without getting anything. There was a second report of a gunman in a classroom complex, but that sighting was determined to be false.

The lockdown at N.C. Central was lifted around 3 p.m.

Earlier Friday, North Carolina A&T State University was placed on lockdown after reports of a man with a rifle on campus.

Prior to the lockdown being lifted at A&T, spokeswoman Nettie Rowland said no shots had been fired and that police had a description of the suspect. School officials did not respond to phone calls seeking additional information on why the lockdown was lifted.

The lockdown on the Greensboro campus was lifted in the early afternoon.

The two campuses are approximately 50 miles apart.

Officials at Elizabeth City State University in northeastern North Carolina issued a lockdown late Thursday night after a report of shots fired on campus. Students were ordered to remain in their residence halls after the lockdown was lifted around 1 a.m. Friday.

While there were no reports of injuries, the school said a campus police officer received a scrape on his face, though it's not clear how.

The Dow Jones industrial average slipped two points to 14,694 shortly after the opening bell Friday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down three points at 1,581, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq composite was off eight at 3,281, or 0.3 percent.

The government reported that the U.S. economy expanded at an annual rate of 2.5 percent in the first three months of the year. That's better than the 0.4 percent growth rate in the final three months of last year, but not as strong as the market had been expecting.

LONDON (Reuters) - Japan's Astellas Pharma and Britain's GlaxoSmithKline are competing to develop a new kind of medicine that boosts production of red blood cells by making the body think it is at high altitude.

Their experimental drugs - both given as pills - could create a major new market in treating anemia and other serious conditions, including circulatory problems and wound damage.

They may also attract unscrupulous athletes seeking a handy oral alternative to injections of EPO, or erythropoietin, the blood enhancer that has become a byword for doping in cases involving cyclist Lance Armstrong and others.

So far, the rival pills are not generally on investors' radar, but they could become significant challengers in an anemia therapy market that is currently dominated by EPO products with combined sales of close to $8 billion a year.

GSK Chief Executive Andrew Witty recently highlighted his company's pill, dubbed GSK 1278863, as one of the two most exciting and innovative products in the development pipeline alongside a promising cancer vaccine called MAGE-A3.

"It is a tablet which makes the body think it is at 5,000 feet. When you go and exercise at altitude you produce a lot of red blood cells, so it has all sorts of potential applications in terms of helping people with blood disorders," he told a National Health Service meeting last month.

GSK is testing its drug in Phase II clinical trials. That puts it behind Astellas and its partner FibroGen, which launched final-stage Phase III tests in December of their drug, known as FG-4592 or ASP1517, as an anemia treatment in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Mike Allen, head of urology and nephrology at Astellas, said the new drug marked a major advance compared to EPO, since it did not raise blood pressure - a concern with EPO. And since it can be given orally at home, it should be particularly suitable for kidney patients who are not on hospital dialysis.

"We are very excited about this product and its potential. It is a priority in our portfolio and we do think that as a novel mechanism for this medical need it is very creative and shows great promise," Allen said in an interview.

Astellas placed a big bet on the new approach in 2006 when it licensed the European and Japanese rights to FG-4592 from private U.S. firm FibroGen in a deal potentially worth more than $2 billion. FibroGen retains rights to the drug in the United States and other markets, and for uses other than anemia.

Another private U.S. company, Akebia Therapeutics, also has a similar HIF-prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor in Phase II tests.

OXFORD RESEARCH

Peter Ratcliffe of the University of Oxford, whose team discovered the prolyl hydroxylase enzymes targeted by the new drugs in 2001, sees a role for them in multiple areas.

In addition to treating anemia, they might help with major circulatory problems such as angina or bad circulation in the legs, aid repair to the body after tissue is damaged, and reduce inflammatory problems such as colitis in the gut.

The new drugs mimic the body's response to hypoxia, or low oxygen levels, by increasing the natural production of EPO in the kidneys.

"The potential advantage over EPO is that these drugs are pills and they also do other things that support the action of EPO, including facilitating the absorption of iron," Ratcliffe said. "It could be an important new area of medicine, which is exciting to explore."

Ratcliffe, who is Nuffield Professor of Clinical Medicine at Oxford, also works as a consultant to GSK.

Current injectable EPO stimulating agents have been under a cloud for some years due to cardiovascular safety concerns. As a result, the global market has shrunk from a peak of $12 billion in 2006, although products like Amgen's Epogen and Aranesp remain multibillion-dollar sellers.

Doctors will be keeping a close watch on potential safety issues with the new pills, too, as they advance through large-scale clinical testing. So far, there are no signs of cardiovascular problems. But there is a potential for unwanted side effects given the generalized way in which the drugs work.

The challenge will be to balance the local and general effects of medicines that, depending on dose, mimic the effects of being at between 5,000 and 15,000 feet, Ratcliffe said.

Side effects may be less of a concern for sport cheats.

Allen said Astellas would do whatever was necessary to ensure its new drug was not abused, although it is has not yet held talks with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

GSK, meanwhile, told WADA last year that it had an unnamed experimental drug that could boost red blood cell production - the first such notification under a new agreement designed to clamp down on illicit drug use in sport.

A company spokesman said it was GSK's policy not to identify individual compounds under the deal with WADA.

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - If you're looking for a show where politicians occasionally do some good, you might want to check out Netflix's "House of Cards." At least Kevin Spacey's conniving congressman does the occasional favor as he tries to slash his way to the vice presidency.

On "Veep," Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Selina Meyer already has the job - and it sucks. As the show returns to HBO Sunday for its second season, she's still abusive to her underlings, ravenously ambitious, and desperate for the POTUS to call. But she's also sleep-deprived after traveling the highways and byways of a country she doesn't seem to like, stumping for candidates she hates, trying to help the party she's ambiguous about win midterm elections.

The premiere takes place as those self-serving dreams are dashed, on election night and the harsh morning after. The stench of death is in the air.

"Apparently POTUS' chief of staff is telling everyone to write their will," one character says. Another fantasizes about being cryogenically frozen. Then comes this pronouncement: "Put everything in the wagons and shoot the dogs, because we have lost the House."

Have I mentioned "Veep" is one of the funniest shows on television? It is, because of the deadpan frankness with which it stares into a pit of petty avarice. There's nothing to do but laugh at the prospect of someone like Meyer in a position of such power and responsibility. But you're laughing through your tears, because, well.

Louis-Dreyfus won and Emmy for the role last season, and would be a safe bet for this one, too. Selina was a knife of a character from the first episode because Louis-Dreyfus and creator Armando Iannucci have made no effort to soften her with likability - or even good intentions.

Like so many of our leaders, Selina cared about issues once, probably. But now it's all about power and access. She competes with similarly insecure narcissists.

Most pathetic of all are the supplicants who try to win her favor. These are the characters we relate to the most, because some of them seem to have some idealism, or at least a willingness to pretend Selina's self-centeredness is a means to and end.

In order from most to least ruthless, they are Dan Egan (Reid Scott), Mike McClintock (Matt Walsh), Sue (Sufe Bradshaw), Amy (Anna Chlumsky), and Gary (Tony Hale). Presidential aide Jonah (Timothy C. Simons) is arguably more powerful than any of them, despite looking like a giant kindergartner.

Every one of them is excellent, with similar but uniquely formulated concoctions of fear, jealousy, and resentment that make any interaction potentially disastrous. In the premiere, we're treated to the spectacle of "My Girl" star Chlumsky and the most arrested of the "Arrested Development" clan, Hale, becoming desperate allies. But everyone gets their moment to shine, or at least have a public meltdown. The premiere finds Mike lamenting a foolish purchase as the ever-efficient Sue gets to turn her cold, barely-hidden contempt on the press.

The show manages to add to and improve on the mix with the addition this season of Gary Cole as number-crunching strategist Kent Davidson and Kevin Dunn as breakdown-prone presidential chief of staff Ben Caffrey.

Cole, of "Office Space" and "Brady Bunch" fame, tends to steal whatever he does, and poses the usual threat here as he exhaustedly outwits Selina at every turn.

Caffrey, meanwhile, gets to hide in a closet - his de facto bunker - and wait for the horrors to pass. Fortunately for us, they never do.
