単語によって語尾にーer, estをつけるものとmore,mostを使うものがあり、

その区別がなかなか難しいと感じたので調べてみました。

【Ａ】現在分詞や過去分詞の類いは、すべて、more型。
　例）boring → more boring; pleased → more pleased

【Ｂ】それ以外は、音節の数が大まかな基準になる。

（１）１音節語は、原則として -er

（２）３音節以上の語は、すべて more
（３）２音節については様々だが、語尾がある程度の目安となる。

(a) -y ; -er ; -ow ; -le ; -some の語尾をもつ語は、-er

(b) -ly で終わる副詞は、early を除き、more をつけて比較級を作る
　例）quickly → more quickly; slowly → more slowly ★ただし、early → earlier

(c) -ful ; -less ; -ish ; -ous ; -iveは、more をつけて比較級を作る。
　例）useful; peaceful; useless; careless; selfish; famous; curious

(d)いくつかの２音節語が、er型とmore型の両方で使われている。

例えばpoliteは、現状では、politer と more polite の両方が使われている
