Student organizes fashion show for animal rescue

Kaitlin Taft is one of the lucky ones.

While many of her peers struggle to make career choices, she’s had her career figured out for a long time – since she was 5-years-old.

Taft, now 17, of Indian Hill wants to be a veterinarian. She’s taken steps to make that happen. For years, she’s been volunteering at animal shelters and rescue organizations. This summer, she’s been shadowing a Mariemont veterinarian.

Now, for her Seven Hills Upper School community service project, she’s organizing a fundraising event for Clermont Pets Alive!, a nonprofit that finds homes for abandoned dogs and cats.

The event will combine her love of animals with her fondness for fashion. Seven of her cheerleader friends will dress in the latest styles for young women and parade down a runway with dogs who will be wearing pet outfits and accessories. The dogs are among those looking for homes with the help of CPA.

“I thought this fashion show would be a good idea because it’s so novel and it’ll be so much fun,” she said.

The event will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Cincinnati Masonic Center, 317 E. Fifth Street in Downtown Cincinnati. A buffet dinner will be served and there will be a cash bar. Tickets can be bought by going to cpafashionshow.org.

Everything worn by the human and canine models will be for sale. The dogs will be dressed in apparel from Moochie and Co., which sells pet clothing, toys, treats and accessories at stores in Kenwood and beyond. The people will be wearing clothes from Leeli and Lou and Pink Tulip Club, women’s clothing stores in Greater Cincinnati.

Admission tickets, raffle tickets and a portion of the vendor proceeds will go to CPA.

photo: school formal dresses online

Randy Breen, a professional event organizer who is helping with the show, called the Masonic Center a “beautiful and historic venue” and promised an atmosphere of elegance and fun.

“Kaitlin’s vision for the evening inspires us all to want to share this program with everyone. It promises to deliver a message of hope for saving dogs and cats.”

In addition to raising money for CPA, the event also will generate awareness about the need to find homes for pets. Many pets that are left at shelters are euthanized. When pets are taken to rescue organizations, homes usually are found for them.

The show also offers a way to support the youths involved in the show, including Taft. Growing up, she had cats, birds, bunnies and hamsters. She has two dogs now: a boxer and a pitbull mix.

She started volunteering at a shelter when her family lived in North Carolina by walking dogs and cleaning their cages. Since eighth grade, she’s been volunteering for CPA by bringing dogs to grocery stores, hoping that passing customers will adopt them.

“I volunteer because I love animals,” she said. “I’ll do anything to try to get close to them and help them.”

This summer, she’s been spending time at Mariemont Veterinary Clinic with Dr. James Westerfield.

“I’ve always wanted to be a vet and I get more passionate about it every day. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Taft, the daughter of Michelle and Dudley Taft Jr., is entering her senior year at Seven Hills.

After high school, her plan is to study animal science as an undergraduate and veterinary science as a graduate student.

Lori Wilson, the CPA event coordinator who has volunteered with Taft, said she has seen Taft’s compassion for animals.

“This compassion shows in her volunteer work with Clermont Pets Alive and by the choice of her career path – veterinary medicine,” Wilson said. “With so many options available to her for her senior project, we are thrilled that she chose to do something that is helping homeless animals who were once unwanted and discarded. Her ambition proves that one person can make a difference.”

see more: plus size formal dresses australia

The High Fashion Mars Suit We’ve Been Waiting

We are well on our way to exploring Mars and finding out if other forms of life will be there to greet us. But while everyone has been caught up in the hullabaloo of who will get to explore Mars and how, London-based textiles designer Alexandra Lucas has brought up an equally important question: what will these Mars explorers wear?

It’s an important idea to ponder, both logistically and aesthetically. The first Mars denizens need protection from outside forces, and it wouldn’t hurt if they looked fashionable, too. Lucas’ project, The Mars Odyssey, explores just what this suit could look like.

Using photos of Mars as inspiration—like the HIRISE images—Lucas experimented with different designs for the suit, sketching her own interpretations of aerial views and using these drawings as the basis for her designs. Because this is a spacesuit meant for Mars, the outfit celebrates the planet’s beauty in its textures, colors and patterns.

“I designed my project around the context of how humanity might make its first steps on an alien planet in a highly functional but also stylish space suit,” Lucas wrote in an email.

photo: vintage bridesmaid dresses

The suit is made up of different layers, each with a distinct purpose: a radiation layer, three pressure layers, a temperature and oxygen layer and a sensory membrane layer.

The current design is more of a “conceptual project” for a suit that would be functional and made with the right materials. But Lucas has done her research, basing parts of the spacesuit on temperature and pressure metrics—as well as the characteristics of Apollo mission suits. She also looked at other NASA spacesuit designs and spoke to scientists at the European Space Agency and UK Space Agency.

Each layer of the Mars suit has its own complex design. The three pressure layers include fabric vents, a neoprene coated layer and an elastic restrain layer.

“These would all protect the body against the low pressure, which is about 5-10 mb, about 100 times thinner than our atmosphere,” wrote Lucas.

Amidst all these layers is Lucas’ passion for textiles and her desire to pay homage to “the beauty of an alien planet.” Thanks to her project, we have at least one high-fashion option for when we meet life on another planet.

read more: plus size bridesmaid dresses

Buffy Sainte-Marie says headdresses are 'painful

Buffy Sainte-Marie has seen fashion-conscious fans show up to concerts wearing headdresses as a trendy statement -- and she's seen enough.

"When it comes to things like headdresses, there are some things that are actually, factually, personally, deeply cultural to our heritage," the 74-year-old musical innovator said in an interview in Toronto this week.

"To some guy who's got models in high heels, bikini bottoms, pasties and a big headdress, and everybody's drunk -- I want people to understand why that is painful or disgusting, why that is negative to us.

"It'd be like if you really loved your grandmother or your mom and all of a sudden you're watching wrestling on TV and you see your mom's picture on some wrestler's crotch.

"It's inappropriate. It's not funny. It doesn't help."

photo: formal dresses brisbane city

For the past few years, headdresses have become a popular -- and controversial -- fashion accessory. The trend seems to rear its ugly head with particular frequency at summer music festivals.

Jessica Simpson flaunted a headdress on Instagram, Pharrell Williams in the pages of Elle UK, Karlie Kloss on a Victoria's Secret runway, Gwen Stefani in a music video, and Vanessa Hudgens at Coachella.

Recently, festivals have fought back against the misguided trend. Osheaga, WayHome, Boots and Hearts, Heavy Montreal, Ile Soniq and the Edmonton Folk Festival have all issued bans in various forms on the fake indigenous headwear.

Still, Sainte-Marie says the trend endures.

"We see it a lot in Europe, especially in Germany," said Sainte-Marie, who was recently shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize for her fiery album "Power in the Blood."

"You see these people showing up and they have handmade, craftsy, fake headdress-like things, and they somehow think they're paying us a compliment.

"But we let them know."

Still, Sainte-Marie -- the decorated owner of an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Gemini and two Juno Awards -- stops short of calling for an outright ban.

She just wants anyone donning a headdress to understand how it will make an aboriginal person feel.

"I don't tell people what to do," she said.

"If you're still going to be a jerk, that's OK, but we want you to know that there are some things that are part of our cultural heritage that mean a lot to us.

"I think it's mostly ignorance," she added. "I think most people who are doing that probably haven't given it much thought."

see more: formal dresses adelaide

J.W. Anderson Talks Fashion Hangouts

Womenswear officiando, Loewe boss and now…Diet Coke bottle designer? J.W. Anderson has officially done it all.

Ahead of the star-studded launch party in the amazing Village Underground in Shoreditch for his new bottle, we spoke to Jonathan about Diet Coke, neon cycling shorts and Bargain Hunt…

Congratulations on the Diet Coke bottle! Was designing a bottle worlds away from working on a womenswear collection?

Yeah, it’s very different! I think knitwear is very key to what I do so I put the task to Diet Coke to ask if there was any way of doing a photo image onto the bottle. It’s never been done before in that way so it was a new challenge for both parties involved and they did very well with it!

What was your first thought when you got the phonecall?

As a designer you want to do everything, I think that’s the thing about being creative, you want to be able to apply yourself to anything. It’s such an iconic shape; it’s a pop culture reference! For me its very odd seeing it because I know the sweater that the print comes from and when you touch it its not what you think it’s going to be, which I think is very interesting. I was thinking about it on the train this morning, I was like, “I can’t believe this is happening!”

The new bottle is a part of Diet Coke’s Regret Nothing campaign – do you fully embrace that philosophy?

Yeah! I never regret anything I do, when I show a collection, that’s it; it’s done; I don’t regret it. I never go back. I always think that I you do something its for a reason, it could be a good reason, it could be a bad reason. I think it’s all part of defining who you are.

photo: long evening dresses

So have you got any embarrassing moments that you look back on and cringe about?

Maybe when I was younger…my brother and I used to wear neon cycling shorts. Daily. We’d wear them with a very oversized t-shirt and Air Jordan’s. The 90’s were not kind to me!

What are your tips for surviving a fashion party?

Always counter balance what you think with something non-alcoholic. Whatever you drink, make it up with water otherwise you end up doing something that you don’t want to.

What’s your trashy TV addiction?

I end up watching stupid things like Bargain Hunt, love a bit of bargain hunting! When you’re off during the week it’s always there to get trapped into watching.

What’s your studio soundtrack?

It’s not really a soundtrack, it’s more of a case of one song on repeat. So I’ll play a song to death for about three days and then I’m over it and I can’t listen to it ever again. It’s been Jammin’ by Bob Marley recently. I’m still not bored of that one yet.

How do you relax after a busy day like today?

I would love to say that I cook, but I don’t. I like to eat out at places like L’Entrepot, which is near to Dalston Kingsland overground. They do amazing French food and great wines. It takes me about 3 hours to decompress from a hectic day, so I’m probably only a bit chilled out by 10pm.

What’s on your Summer bucket list?

This Summer I’m going cultural. I really want to go to Eileen Gray’s house, which has just opened up for the first time. I also want to go and see Matisse’s chapel. More restaurants, more beaches, more food, nothing to do with fashion!

What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever bought?

God, there’s so many stupid things! I buy things and then get bored of them very quickly. I bought a microwave and that really bothers me because it’s so ugly. It’s just hiding in my cupboard. I just eat at restaurants instead.

And finally, fashion week is fast approaching, are you looking forward to it?

I’m looking forward to Christmas! No, I always look forward to it. I love doing shows; it’s an outlet for me.

see more: short formal dresses australia

His Walk Down the Aisle Leads to Theirs

Deborah Shana Lapidus and Adam Arne Margolin are to be married Sunday by Rabbi William G. Hamilton, a maternal uncle of the groom, at Mount Hood Organic Farms, an event space in Mount Hood, Ore.

Until June, the bride, 33, worked in Portland, Ore., as the outreach director for Climate Advisers, an environmental consultancy for which she designed and led Forest Heroes, a campaign to save rain forests. She graduated magna cum laude from Brown and is a daughter of Arlene R. Lapidus and Robert D. Lapidus of Great Falls, Va.

The groom, 34, is the director of computational biology and an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. He graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, from which he also received a master’s in computer information technology. He received a master’s degree in biomedical informatics from Columbia, from which he also earned a Ph.D. in bioinformatics. He is a son of Randi E. Margolin and Alan C. Margolin of Scarsdale, N.Y.

The couple met in June 2008 on a Lucky Star Chinatown bus heading home to Boston from New York.

“That guy is funky,” she recalled thinking as he boarded the bus in a bright green T-shirt with a purple monster.

photo: evening dresses online

He also noticed her as he walked down the aisle, but he could not bring himself to sit next to her.

“I thought she was stunning,” he said. After walking a few rows back, he said to himself: “You idiot. What are you doing?” and did an about-face and took the seat beside her.

She soon learned “he is one of these genius scientist guys,” she said.

The normally introspective Dr. Margolin opened a four-inch-thick book on the molecular biology of cancer, but he soon decided that the bumpy ride and Ms. Lapidus proved too much of a distraction for serious reading.

“All right, I’m not paying much attention to this book anyway,” he said to her a few minutes into the trip, and proceeded to tell her his whole life story, with a few diversions.

“I was happy to listen and to analyze things,” she said, and at one point impressed him by guessing his personality type according to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. “I could guess his combination: INTP,” which stands for introverted, intuitive, thinking and perceiving.

She also told him about being an environmental organizer, which intrigued him, and they debated whether mole rats were altruistic in giving up individual needs for the greater good.

Just before they arrived in Boston, Dr. Margolin was up to the part in his life when he had moved there. But before the long conversation ended, he mentioned that they should be friends and hang out. He asked for her number.

“Perhaps for the first and last time in our seven-year relationship, I did more of the talking,” he said. “I told her all she needed to know in that bus ride.”

Later that evening, Ms. Lapidus told her sister that “he seemed like he could be an all-purpose boyfriend.” They soon began dating.

“We’re very opposite in some ways, but we’re both working on global scale challenges,” she said. “I’m working on climate change, and he’s trying to find a cure for cancer. We’re in a race to see who succeeds first.”

In May 2013, when he incorporated his proposal into a show at a circus dinner theater in Seattle, she accepted on the condition that he promised to always do the dishes. And he does.

see more: cocktail dresses

Hitcase Armed and Ready to Take on Fashion Secto

After a few years of setting up satellite communications for the U.S. military and other agencies in Afghanistan, Brooks Bergreen returned home to Vancouver to regroup. Somewhat of a serial entrepreneur, he also designed and developed a health informatics system in post-war Kosovo, sold the pilot concept to the European Agency for Reconstruction, which then used $17.5 million to finance it, set up a staff and take over all assets.

Back in Canada, Bergreen decided in 2012 to fuse his documentary filmmaking and extreme sports pursuits to start Hitcase, an extra-durable, waterproof iPhone case with a wide-angle lens. There are various attachments that allow wearers to film with their iPhones hands-free. With a team of 24 brand ambassadors and counting, Hitcase is geared for adrenaline seekers like pro skateboarder Ryan Decenzo, snowboarder Geoff Brown and pro MX racer Colton Facciotti. Some Hitcase motorcyclists wear-tested the product at speeds up to 100 miles an hour. To give visitors to its Web site a sampling of the product and the company’s hired talent, there is a video of another one of its back-country skiers, Sean Pettit, taking on a near-vertical 1,000-foot drop at Whistler Mountain.

Adaptable for the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5 and iPhone 6, the lens options include a removable flat one, an underwater macro for iPhone, a 2x wide-angle TrueLUX lens and a 3x Super wide lens. A deal is pending with a major airline, which he declined to identify, to use Hitcase to film mechanical problems so that a team of engineers in different locations can work together without the added cost of flying them to where the plane actually is. Now Bergreen is counting on Hitcase’s multifunctional capacities to appeal to a range of industries.

photo: vintage formal dresses australia

Fashion is another prospect for Hitcase, according to Bergreen, who said, “Runways are like action sports for a fashion person. We designed the ChestR mount so that it’s very comfortable to wear and it doesn’t look like a technical piece.”

Beyond fashion shows, the industry’s increasing thirst for short films, online content and unexpected designer collaborations could be an open window for Hitcase, he said. “Here’s the thing, right now many people engage with brands online. And whether they are fashion brands or not, they need to be content brands,” Bergreen said.”Hitcase should allow customers to see different versions of a brand. Film shoots can inspire people to be excited about a brand.”

A few senior executives who joined the company earlier this year also have a link to fashion and action sports. Athlete and brand marketing manager Cody Swansborough is a former Red Bull marketing manager and independent action sports agent. Designer Raif Adelberg and Kenny Macintyre are co-lifestyle and culture marketing directors. Adelberg started his own signature label, owned the former Richard Kidd boutique in Malibu and as a gallerist produced shows for KAWS and Ryan McGinness, He has his own art installations, like The Dead Boys Clubhouse, which was inspired by the closing of CBGB, channeling Barbra Kruger, Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood. He is also creative director.

Kenny Macintyre, meanwhile, spent 10-years plus at Red Bull, working on its World Three Style Championships among other things. At Hitcase, he oversees all music and cultural initiatives. Bergreen’s wife, Sarah Galashan, a broadcast journalist whom he met while both were on assignment in Kandahar, offers public relations and marketing advice.”She knows the media space quite well. She doesn’t have formal work with the company but she’s always in my ear,” he said.

see more: low back formal dresses
